So, has any band had a stronger line up of lead guitarists than the Allman Brothers Band? From founder Duane Allman to Dickey Betts to Warren Haynes to Derek Trucks, the Allman's have fielded a hall of fame's worth of Guitar Gods, each and every one of which will feature at some point this month. This soundboard recording captures the band with Dickey Betts on lead guitar on July 12, 1986, 31 years ago today. By the way, all of our Allman Brother's Band posts are dedicated to the late great leader of the band, the one and only Greg Allman.

Speedy, i had to comment on the "Late, great leader" statement. I don't think he, hoimself would have considered himself as such. Duane was founder, Dickey tried later to be leader, and I donT think they needed or wanted to be anything but a co-operative. Have you read Gregg's book, by the way? I think his drugs, health and women 'issues' kept him pretty busy. He was the souliest, blackest 'white-boy' singer ever, and I loved him, but leader of the ABB? I really don't think so. Just my thoughts.
Thank you for this!
I'd say one band has: The Yardbirds.
Speedy, I do hope I didn't cause any offence when I disagreed with what you had written on this post. I certainly didn't mean anything, I only meant pursue the dialogue. This is your site, your labour of love, and I shouldn't contradict. Please accept my apology.
@howlingwilf - no offense taken. I think in some ways Greg was like Jerry Garcia. Those of us on the outside perceived him as the leaderbut neither would ever =think of themselves that way. Great point.
could you reup this show when you have time thank you jr
new link is up - enjoy!
