Johnny Cash, along with wife June Carter Cash, appeared at the first Farm Aid in 1985, one of the many country legends such as Glen Campbell, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and of course, founder Willie Nelson, to perform at the inaugural event.  Cash returned in 1993, performing as part of The Highwaymen.

This soundbaord recording captures The Man In Black 13 years before the first Farm Aid, perfroming in Tulsa on October 27, 1972, 55 years ago today.  That year, Cash released the album A Thing Called Love, which climbed to #2 on the country charts as did the the title track. Cash is joined by his wife Jiune, who has mentioned appeared with him at the first Farm Aid and Carl Perkins, who performed at the 1990 edition of the festival.

1997: In 1979, George Martin, the legendary producer of The Beatles, financed the building of a recording studio on the Island on Montserrat in the Caribbean From 1979 to 1989, about 70 albums were recorded there, including Synchronicity by the Police and Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits.  Unfortunately, in 1989, Category Four hurricane Hugo hit Montserrat, destroying almost 90 percent of all buildings on the island, including Martin's recording studio. Then, in 1995, the main volcano on the island, Soufriere Hills erupted, and once again the island was devasted. Martin then led an effort to stage a benefit concert to help rebuild the island. He assembled an all star cast of perfromers, all who had recorded on the island, including Carl Perkins, Phil Collins, Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Buffett, Sting, Elton John, Eric clapton, and Sir Paul McCartney.  For Perkons, it would be his last live performance prior to his death just a few months later in January 1998.  For McCartney, it was his first live performance in the wake of the death of hios wife Linda.  This TV soundboard recording captures the entire show, from the Royal Albert Hall in London, on September 15, 1997, 29 years ago today. 1990s - #1: On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp, inspired by Bob Dylan's pleas at Live Aid to help the family farmer in America, launched Farm Aid intending to do just that! That firs concert, which was held at the University of Illinois, attracted 80,000 fans and raised over $9 million. Over the past 4 decades, the effort has raised well over $75 million to help America's family farms while also serving a a key organization to raise awareness of the importance and plight of those farmers. This FM and TV SBD recording captures highlights from Farm Aid 1990, held in Indianapolis on April 7, 1990, 35 years ago today. The line up is filled with rock and roll hall of famers, imcluding the 3 founders!

The 2nd Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony in 1987 featured a gigantic list of inductees who spanned the gamut from 1950's rock to blues to soul and more. Aretha Franklin became the first women inducted, though sadly the Queen Of Soul did not attend. BB King, Bo Diddley, and Muddy Waters, 3 blues legends, took their rightful place in the hall as did soulful legends Smokey Robinson and Jackie Wilson. Early legends such as Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins, Ricky Nelson and Bill Haley, also were part of the class of 1987. Musical moments included Orbison dueting with Bruce Springsteen on Pretty Woman, Carl Perkins backed by Keith Richards and BB King on Blue Suede Shoes, and Smokey Robinson leading an all star jam on Going To A Go Go.

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on January 21, 1987, 375 yesrs ago today.  A complete list of inductees is provided below:

ENGLAND -  On October 21, 1984, 35 years ago today and a night after he sat in with Eric Clapton, Carl Perkins was back on stage, this time with EC's good friend, George Harrison.  Clapton also made an appearance, as did Ringo Star and Dave Edmunds.  The concert, billed as Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session was an emotional tribute to Perkin's legendary career.  While this soundboard  recording doesn't contain the entire evening - a few songs are missing - its a still a must have for your collection.

ENGLAND - Eric Clapton's set list on October 20, 1985, 35 years ago today, at a concert in Surrey, his first show in back in the UK since March after completing a world tour, looked much like the one for every other show that year.  On the road in support of the album Behind The Sun, EC played several tunes from the new disc, such as Tangled In Love, She's Waiting and Same Old Blues, mixed in with earlier classics. Then the encore happened. As captured in this soundboard recording, Slowhand was joined on stage by Carl Perkins and Phil Collins, for a rollicking run of tunes featuring Matchbox and Blue Suede Shoes, 2 songs Perkins had helped make famous. By the way, this guest appearance sets the stage for one of tomorrow's posts, but you'll have to wait 24 hours for that one!

The Highwaymen - Together & Solo #4: In addition to being part of the Highwaymen, Johnny Cash was also a member of the Million Dollar Quartet, along with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. Those 4 came together for a recording session  on December 4, 1956 at Sun record Studios in Memphis.  Incredibly, the recording remained lost in the Sun archives until 1981 when17 tracks were discovered and released. Additional tracks have been leased since. Moreover, the nistoric session spawned a entire Broadway musical, which ran for two years and included almost 500 performances. This soundboard recording captures 3/4 of the Million Dollar Quartet on tour together in Europe on April 23, 1981, 3 dozen years ago this very day!

Taping for show.  Actually aired on January 6, 1971

1970 - On November 5, 1970, 44 years ago today, Derek and The Dominos went into the studio at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville to tape a television broadcast. The band, led by Eric Clapton, was in the middle of its only US tour, but took a break to film a segment for the Johnny Cash show. Ironically, the show wouldn’t air on TV until January 1971, when the band was falling apart from drug abuse which caused tension and paranoia among the band members. During the tapings, the band played 3 of its classics, It’s Too Late, Got To Get Better In A Little While and Blues Power. The highlights of the session, however, are the 3 takes on Matchbox, during which Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins joined the Dominos. The last of the 3 takes made the TV broadcast (as did It’s Too Late) and the site of 3 rock legends, Clapton, Cash and Perkins, on stage together, side by side playing guitar, was one for the ages. Download this soundboard recording to hear that historic moment , then check out you-tube where you can find the video!
