Lesh Quintet 2002 - Back To Back - #1: While Phil Lesh took an occasional vocal during Dead concerts, he hardly seemed like the type to front a band. Yet, once the Dead officially disbanded in 1995 after Jerry Garcia's death, he did exactly that. In 1998, he began playing under the moniker Phil Lesh and Friends. Over the years, the friends have included a virtual who’s who of rock & roll, including Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastasio, Joan Osborne, Stanley Jordan, Steve Kimock and Derek Trucks, just to name a few. Perhaps the most reknown, and certainly the most beloved, line up was the Phil Lesh Quintet, nicknamed the Q. That group, featured, in adddition to Lesh, Warren Haynes on guitar & vocals, Jimmy Herring on guitar, Rob Barraco on keyboards and vocals, and John Molo on drums. The Q's original run, from 2002 to 2003, produced some of the best shows ever played by any iteration of Phil & Friends.  This soundboard recording captures The Q at the first night of the Gathering Of The Vibes festival on July 5, 2002, 2 dozen years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Allman Brothers Band - 2002-06-10 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

I saw the Allman Brothers live twice - once in July 1979 right before their early 1980s break up and then again in October 1986 at the Crackdown on Crack concert with CSN and Santana. Both shows were at Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately, neither show found the band in peak form.

This soundboard recording captures the Allmans in San Francisco on June 6, 2002, 2 dozen years ago today. The band was riding a new wave of popularity in the early 21st century with Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks on guitar, providing a one two punch similar to How Duane Allman and Dickie Betts did for the band in the early 1970s.

I've only seen Sheryl Crow once, on July 28, 2019 at the Rooftop at Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport in New York. The good news - our Chase Card got us early admission so we found a spot right in front of Sheryl's microphone (it was standing room only!), not more than 5 feet from her! The bad news - its the last concert I attended before the pandemic hit and kept us away from live music for over 2 years. That's what led to finally writing my book - since I couldn't attend live shows, figured I might as well write about them. 

This soundboard recording captures Sheryl in Montreal on July 8, 2002, 2 dozen years ago today, on tour in support of her 4th album, entitled C’Mon, C’Mon. Released in April of that year, the disc became her 4th platinum album, and 4th to chart in the top 6 on the Billboard Top 200. In fact, it reached #2 on the charts, the best showing by any of her albums to date. The lead single from the disc, Soak Up the Sun, peaked at reached #17 on the Billboard Hot 100, while climbing all the way to #1 on the Billboard adult music charts.

One of my favorite rock trivia questions is the following: "Name the only 2 bands that have all 4 members inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice?" The answer: "The Beatles and CSNY".  But there's a catch to the question! You see, the Beatles were inducted as a group, and then every member was inducted individually.  But CSNY was never inducted as a group!  CSN got in as a group, and Neil Young as a solo artist. Neil and Stephen Stills got their second inductions as members of Buffalo Springfield! Graham Nash got his 2nd induction as a member of The Hollies and David Crosby garnered his second as a member of the Byrds! 

This ALD recording captures the foursome in San Jose on April 5, 2002, 2 dozen years ago today.  They were on the road for their Tour of America, a 40 concert run that started on February 6 in Detroit and ran until the final show on April 29 in Portland.

Paul McCartney - 2002-04-03 - San Jose, CA (Ex Aud)

Sir Paul McCartney was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the first time in 1988 as a member of The Beatles.  He did not show up for that induction as he was in legal disputes with George, Ringo, and John's widow, Yoko, at the time. Macca clearly made peace with everyone by 1994, as that year he inducted John into the Rock Hall as a solo artist. McCartney was then inducted for a 2nd time in 1999 as a solo artist. His daughter Stella wore a T-Shirt emblazoned with the words "About F**king Time" in reference to that fact her dad had to wait 4 years after John to be recognized for his solo work. Paul dedicated the night to his recently deceased wife, Linda. He kicked off the end of night jam with a rousing version of Blue Suede Shoes, paying homage to Carl Perkins in the process, then came back later for a surprise rendition of Let It Be to close the night. 

This excellent audience recording captures McCartney 3 years later in San Jose on April 3, 2002, 2 dozen years ago today, during his Driving The USA tour in April 2002, his first set of concerts in the states since 1993. It was also his first tour in the wake of the death of his wife Linda, his former band mate George Harrison, and the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Maybe those events caused Sir Paul to take a new perspective on his life. Maybe he began to realize that life truly was too short. Whatever the reason, it was clear that something had changed, because on this tour, more than on any previous solo venture, Paul seemed to truly embrace his past. Over 20 songs each night were Beatle classics. The set lists also included tributes to September 11 (Freedom), John (Here Today), George (Something) and Linda (My Love). My lovely bride and I saw Paul during that tour at Madison Square Garden on April 27, 2002, and the emotion that filled the building that night has stayed with me to this very day.

2000s - #7: As long time readers of So Many Roads Know, one of my favorite musicians is Marshall Crenshaw. Crenshaw is so under rated that he makes John Hiatt, whose lack of attention I have frequently mourned, look like Mr Popularity. Crenshaw was born in Detroit, MI but got his big break in New York, when he played John Lennon in the off Broadway production, Beatlemania. While in New York, he recorded Someday, Someway, a song that Robert Gordon covered and took to #76 on the Billboard charts in 1981. Crenshaw released his version the next year, which went to #36 in the charts, his only top 40 single. Crenshaw’s first 2 albums are must owns for every rock fan. Famed critic Robert Christgau summed those 2 discs up in one simple word - PERFECT. This soundboard recording captures Crenshaw, in Philadelphia on March 30, 2002, 2 dozen years ago today.

Elton John - 2002-12-01 - London, UK (TV SBD)

In early spring 1976, tickets went on sale for Elton John at Madison Square Garden, a then unheard of 7 show stand at the World's Greatest Arena which would conclude his world wide Louder Than The Concorde (But Not Quite As Pretty) Tour. Elton, while not yet a Sir, was easily the biggest rock star in the world at the time. So, it came as no surprise that my buddies and I decided our first concert experience had to be Elton at the Garden. Shut out from getting tickets through Ticketron, we opted for the local scalper, who sold us floor seats for $25. My dad gave me hell for paying three times the face value ($8.50!) to go see "some long haired rock and roller" (pretty ironic given the state of Elton's hair line). Parental disapproval aside, we made the trek from NJ to The Garden on August 15, 1976. That concert eventually inspired my self published book, Ten Rules Of The Road That I Learned At My First Concert. Since that 1976 show, I've seen Elton live 5 more times, all at MSG: 

• the One tour in October 1992
• a solo performance in October 1999
• the 30th anniversary of Captain Fantastic in September 2005
• his 60th birthday concert in March 2007
• the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in November 2018

2000s -#5: The tragic events of Sept 11, 2001 brought an outpouring of support for the city of New York from the rock and roll community..From the America: A Tribute to Heroes telethon about a week after the attack to the Concert for New York in October, rock’s biggest stars – Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Bill Joel, The Who, U2, and David Bowie, just to name a few – turned out to support the battered, but always resilient city. Few gave as much as did New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen. He opened the telethon with the song My City of Ruins, originally written for Asbury Park, but now transformed into “a prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters." From that tune emerged an entire album dedicated to the memory of 9-11, an album fittingly titled The Rising, because New York would not bow down to the terrorists who attempted to destroy her will. Springsteen’s work on The Rising was some of the best of his career. When the album debuted in early 2002, it went straight to #1 on the charts, with glowing reviews from the critics. Springsteen took his message of hope on the road, launching The Rising Tour on August 7, 2002, at the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey. Bruce Springsteen - 2002-08-12 - New York, NY (IEM Matrix)

Bruce Springsteen had really no connections to Jerry Garcia or the Grateful Dead. As he admits in his autobiography, he went to one show and didn't get it at the time. Only years later did he come to appreciate Garcia's playing style and what the Dead were all about. Bruce's right hand man, however, the one and only Big Man on the saxophone, Clarence Clemons, was well connected to Jerry and the Dead. Clemons sat in with the Grateful Dead for at least 5 shows in 1988 and 1989. As such, he joined a select list of horn players to sit in with the Dead, which included such legends as Branford Marsalis and David Murray. In addition, Clarence played 7 concerts with the Jerry Garcia Band in the fall of 1989. Those shows that were so good that 5 of them have now been officially released - September 1, 2, 5, 6 and 16.  Blair Jackson documents all of Clarence's appearances with the Dead and Jerry in this article. By the way, at one point, Garcia and Weir actually considered inviting Clarence to join the Grateful Dead as a full time member. According to Weir, it was in the early 1990s, right after Springsteen broke up the E-Street band (temporarily, it turned out). It might have worked according to Weir, except that a couple members of the Dead “hated saxophones”. Go here to read more about how close Clarence came to being a Dead Head!

The Vienne Jazz Festival, held near Lyon, France, originated in July 1981, and continues through today.  The festival lasts 2 weeks, and over the years has not only featured jazz legends such as Stan Getz and Herbie Hancock but also rock artists like Chuck Berry and Ike Turner.  This FM Broadcast captures Van Morrison at the festival on July 1, 2022, 23 years ago today.  Morrison was on tour in support of the album Down The Road, which he had released in May 2002.  The disc went to #26 on the Billboard charts, his highest charting album since Saint Dominic's Preview in 1972, 3 decades earlier! Down The Road featured blues and R&B music, reflecting some of Van’s earliest influences.

As mentioned in our Springsteen post 2 days ago, countless rock legends played the Super Bowl half time show in the last 1990s and early 2000s.  Perhaps the most memorable of all those performances, was the one by U2 in New Orleans at Super Bowl XXXVI, on February 3, 2002, 23 years ago today. Less than 5 months after the tragedy of September 11, U2 demonstrated why music matters and can make a difference. As Bono launched into MLK, the stadium’s lights went off. Two giant sheets rose from the field toward the giant dome’s ceiling, like the now-gone, side-by-side Twin Towers. The names of all who died on the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, categorized by headings such as “United Airlines Flight 93,” scrolled up the sheets all the way up onto the Superdome’s ceiling. Then U2 segued into  Where the Streets Have No Name as the names – 2,973 of them   –  continued to scroll up behind the band.  When Bono capped it all off by opening his jacket to reveal an American flag sewn into the lining, we all knew we were going to survive that day and emerge even stronger.  This TV soundboard recording captures that legendary day.  Go here and you can see it the video - and if you shed some tears, that's a-ok. The tragic events of Sept 11, 2001 brought an outpouring of support for the city of New York from the rock and roll community..From the America: A Tribute to Heroes telethon about a week after the attack to the Concert for New York in October, rock’s biggest stars – Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Bill Joel, The Who, U2, and David Bowie, just to name a few – turned out to support the battered, but always resilient city. Few gave as much as did New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen. He opened the telethon with the song My City of Ruins, originally written for Asbury Park, but now transformed into “a prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters." From that tune emerged an entire album dedicated to the memory of 9-11, an album fittingly titled The Rising, because New York would not bow down to the terrorists who attempted to destroy her will. Springsteen’s work on The Rising was some of the best of his career. When the album debuted in early 2002, it went straight to #1 on the charts, with glowing reviews from the critics. Springsteen took his message of hope on the road, launching The Rising Tour on August 7, 2002, at the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey. This soundboard recording captures Bruce & The E-Street Band during that historic tour, in Atlanta, on December 2, 2002, 22 years ago today.  Never forget!

2000s - #4: On June 11, 2002, David Bowie released the album, Heathen, which would reach # 14 on the Billboard charts, his highest charting album in the US since Tonight in 1984. The disc also earned some of his strongest reviews since Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) in 1980. Worldwide, Heathen sold over two million copies and ranked in the top 5 on the charts in England, France, Germany, Norway and Denmark. Most significantly, the album dealt with Bowie’s impressions of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the US. Bowie was living in NY at the time of the attacks, and opened the Concert For New York City at Madison Square Garden in October 2001 that raised money for victims of the tragedy. Heathen, with songs such as Slow Burn, that described a world coming apart and gripped by fear, and Sunday, with lyrics such as "Nothing remains...everything has changed”, reflected the devastating impact of that day. Bowie went on a short summer tour in support of the disc, and then scheduled 7 extra shows on the East Coast in October. The first 5 of those shows were christened the New York Marathon Tour, as Bowie played 1 show in each of NYC’s five boroughs. He quipped that “I could get home from all the gigs on roller skates”. This Soundboard/IEM recording captures Bowie on the 2nd of his 5 nights in NY, at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn, on October 12, 2002, 22 years ago today.
