Bobby Darin was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990, alongside the Four Seasons, The Four Tops, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Who, just to name a few members of that class. S his bio in the Rock Hall states, Darin had no limits as a performer: "Teen idol. Adult crooner. Vegas lounge singer. Rock and roll star. Bobby Darin flirted with many musical personae and rocked them all." Nine years later he would be inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. One of the great voices of our times, and one of my personal favorite singers.  

This TV soundboard recording captures Darin on April 20, 1973, 53 years ago today, on the next to last episode of his variety show. What no one knew at the time, however, was that the show would be Darin's swan song. The incomparable singer would die on December 20, 1973, after 5 hours of open heart surgery failed to repair his already damaged heart, which had suffered a fatal infection when Darin failed to take medications designed to protect his heart prior to a dentist visit earlier that month. He was only 37 years old.  Note: we posted this show several years ago but since then, have found 5 more songs - we're still missing a few but its more of Bobby than we had before!

1970s - #5: In the summer of 1972, Bobby Darin hosted a variety show on NBC that turned out to be a surprise hit for the network, The show was brought back in January 1973 as a mid-season replacement and ran until April. What no one knew at the time, however, was that the show would be Darin's swan song. The incomparable singer would die on December 20, 1973, after 5 hours of open heart surgery failed to repair his already damaged heart, which had suffered a fatal infection when Darin failed to take medications designed to protect his heart prior to a dentist visit earlier that month. He was only 37 years old. In 1990, Darin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Nine years later, he was voted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. This TV soundboard recording captures him on January 26, 1973, 53 years ago today, during the second episode of the winter run of his variety show. As promised, here's the 2nd and final post in our Bobby Darin Same Tour, Different Show entry. This one is a TV soundboard recording of the final episode of the Bobby Darin show from April 27, 1973, 43 tears ago today.  Unlike the other episodes of the show, which featured comedy sketches along with some songs by Darin and his musical guests, this final episode was done as full concert, showcasing what Darin did best - perform live on stage.

One of the best parts of running this blog getting to introduce folks to music you love, regardless of the genre or how poular it is. For example, we've brought you shows from folks such as Marshall Crenshaw, John Hiatt, Rachel Sweet and the Holmes Brothers, who while not exactly The Beatles or The Stones, have made some incredibly fine music that just doesn't get enough attention. Well, here in 2016, we're going to bring you plenty of music from another of my favorites, a legendary singer and performer who left us was too soon, the one and only Bobby Darin.  This TV soundboard recording captures Darin on the Tonight Show, hosted by Johnny Carson, on February 6, 1973, 43 years ago today.
