Bruce Springsteen - 1978-08-23 - Madison Square Garden, NY (Ex/ VG Aud)

On August 23, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today, as captured in this some times excellent, some times very good audience recording, I saw Bruce Springsteen for the first time, which was just the 11th concert I had ever attended up to that point. For Bruce, it was his first time headlining at Madison Square Garden. Springsteen had just recently released the album Darkness On The Edge Of Town, his first disc since 1975's Born to Run, the 3 year gap resulting from a long legal battle with his former manager. The songs on Darkness were leaner than his previous work, and began to reflect his growing social and political awareness. The tour was critical for Bruce, therefore, as he needed to gauge if his new material would resonate with fans and if his live shows would translate to 20,000 seat arenas. The August 23 show I attended was the last of his 3 nights at MSG, and to paraphrase the late, great, John Lennon, lets just say Bruce "passed the audition". Since that show, I've seen Springsteen  headline 8 more times - another concert in 1978, then in 1984, 1985, 1988, twice in 1992, and then twice more in 2003.  I also saw him as a guest of Sir Paul McCartney in both 2017 and 2022. That's 11 times I've seen him on stage across 6 decades!

Rockpile - 1978-08-08 - Stockholm, Sweden (TV SBD)

I saw Rockpile just once, on July 8, 1979 at Belmont Race Track. I was 20 years old in the summer of 1979, and basically my life consisted of what girl could I date, what beer could I drink, and what concert could I get tickets to. I think I may have been most successful at the 3rd of those 3 things. In July, for example, I saw concerts on 3 straight Saturday nights, Stephen Stills on July 7, Jorma Kaukonen on July 14 and the Allman Brothers on July 21. Having dedicated Saturdays in July to classic rock, I used a Sunday to take in 2 of the "new wave" bands that were then all the rage. On Sunday, July 8, my buddies and I drove to Belmont Race Track in Long Island to catch a double bill of Blondie and Rockpile! I'll be honest, I don't remember much about the day for a variety of reasons. First, having seen Stephen Stills the night before, there were some after effects that lingered into Sunday, if you know what I mean. Second, the car ride took over 2.5 hours due to summer beach traffic, which didn't help my condition. Finally, it was hot as hell that day, which also didn't help me in overcoming the the residual effects from Saturday night. I do remember, however, the contrast in styles between the folks at Belmont for the concert and those who were there for the horse racing. On one hand, you had the 20 year old new wavers with big hair, funky glasses, neon colored, leggings, skinny ties, etc. On the other hand, you had old men, with cigars, in button down short sleeve shirts, looking like Oscar Madison from the Odd Couple. In any event, I don't really recall how well either band played that July afternoon, a real shame since I was (and still am) a huge fan of Rockpile, thanks in large part to Nick Lowe's Pure Pop For Now People disc (Jesus of Cool in the UK) and Dave Edmund's Repeat When Necessary album. I also remember, that Rockpile opened with the highly appropriate The Race is On! By the way, if you like what you just read, then you'll definitely enjoy my book! 

This TV soundboard recoring captures Rockpile about a year before I saw them, on August 8, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today. Note that the sound is just a bit muffled, mayb edue to the age of the video.

I saw Eddie Money once, in the summer of 1979, in Central Park.  That said, I only stayed for a few songs, which I now regret.  You see, the only reason I went to the show was to see the opening act, Ms. Rachel Sweet. Her debut disc, Fool Around  became a staple on the turntable (yes - it's that old!) in my college dorm room. Part new wave, part early 60's girl group in sound, the album featured songs such a B-A-B-Y, Wildwood Saloon, I Go to Pieces and Sad Song. 

In any event, this FM Broadcast captures Eddie on tour iin support of his debut album in Lexington on June 29, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today. Unlike me, the Rolling Stones had taken notice of Mr. Money, brining his on board to open for them that night.

Long before he took on the Buster Poindexter guise, the late David Johansen was a member of the New York Dolls, then had a fairly successful solo career during the new wave/punk era of the late 1970s and early 1980s. I saw him during that period on 2 occasions, in May 1980 and on New Year's Eve 1983.

David Johansen - 1978-05-29 - Cleveland, OH (FM)

Long before he was doing a lounge act as Buster Poindexter, David Johansen was part of the punk/new wave scene. In the early 1970s, he was a member of the New York Dolls, along with Johnny Thunders and Sylvain Sylvain. The Dolls, along with The Velvet Underground and The Stooges, were pioneers of the punk movement. After the Dolls split up, Johansen struck out on his own, releasing his self-titled debut album in 1978 followed up by In Style in 1979. The 2 discs included tunes which would become staples of his live shows, including Funnky But Chic, Melody, Frenchette, You Touched Me To and Girls. This FM broadcast captures Johansen on his first solo tour, at The Agora in Cleveland on Ma9 27, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today.

Warren Zevon - 1978-04-24 - Los Angeles CA (FM)

Warren Zevon was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2025, alongside Joe Cocker, Bad Company, Chubby Checker, and Cyndi Lauper, just to name a few other members of the class. Zevon was inducted for "Musical Influence", a category the hall defines as including "artists whose music and performance style have directly influenced, inspired, and evolved rock & roll and music impacting culture". As if every artist inducted as a performers hasn't done all those things. I think it really should be defined as "we've screwed up for countless years in not inducting you, so we created this category to get you in the door."

In any event, this FM broadcast captures Zevon at the Roxy in Los Angeels on April 24, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today. His album Excitable Boy,  which had been produced by Jackson Browne and guitarist Waddy Wachtel, had been released just 4 months earlier. The disc met with both critical and commercial success. Rolling Stone called the album one of the most significant releases of the 1970s. The disc went to #8 on the Billboard charts, and spawned the classic single Werewolves of London, which reached #21 on the singles chart. Interestingly, on that same day, the Grateful Dead were playing a concert in Normal IL, which has been officially released as Dave’s Picks 37. They too had taken notice of Zevon, as their choice for an encore that night was none other than Werevolves of London.

Warren Zevon - 1978-03-23 - Chicago, IL (FM)

1970s - #5:  In 1978, Warren Zevon became an “overnight success”, when he released the album Excitable Boy, which in addition to the title track, featured Werewolves of London, Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner, Johnny Strikes Up The Band and Lawyers, Guns and Money. Of course, success hadn’t come overnight at all, as Zevon had toiled for years in Los Angeles as a song writer, contributing tunes to albums by artists such as Linda Ronstadt and The Everly Brothers, as well as to the soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy. In addition, he had released 2 albums prior to Excitable Boy, though neither garnered much attention. Excitable Boy helped the general public understand what the rock community had know for years, namely that Zevon was an incredibly gifted song writer, able to cast a cynical eye on events, politics, celebrities and even himself. This soundboard recording captures Zevon playing tunes from Excitable Boy at the Park West in Chicago, on March 23, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today.

1970s - #2: When Elvis Costello burst on the scene in the late 1970’s, he quickly took his place as one of the 3 Angry Men of rock, along with Graham Parker and Joe Jackson. His first 2 albums, My Aim Is True and This Year’s Model, may be one of the best 1, 2 punches ever thrown by a new artist. Both albums, which were produced by Nick Lowe of Rockpile fame, cracked the top 40 on the Billboard album charts, and received wisespread critical praise. In 2003, Rolling Stone included My Aim is True and This Year’s Model in their list of the Top 500 albums of all time, with the former ranked #168 and the latter at #98. Elvis toured relentlessly in early 1978 in support of both albums, for the most part playing small clubs and college campuses. JGB 1978 - Back To Back - #1: In the winter of 1978, Jerry Garcia went on tour in support of the album Cats Under The Stars, which he recorded in late 1977 and released in April 1978. Unlike Bob Weir, who made some unique choices in the session musicians that helped him record Heaven Help The Fool, Garcia stayed tried and true, working with long time bass player John Kahn, keyboardist Merl Saunders, and drummer Ron Tutt, as well as Grateful Dead members Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux. Garcia also recruited vocalist Maria Muldaur, know for her 1974 hit Midnight at The Oasis, to provide backing vocals for the disc. Kahn, The Godchaux's and Muldaur were all part of the tour band as well, with Buzz Buchanan on drums being the only member of the live ensemble not to have played on the album. Many folks consider this 1978 tour one of the finest by the Jerry Garcia Band, with both the March 18 and March 22 shows having been officially released. I also saw Garcia live for the first time on this tour, on March 17 at the Capitol Theater. Grateful Dead - 1978-04-21 - Lexington, KY (SBD)

1970s - #6: As we've discussed in numerous posts on this blog, 1978 was a year of highs and lows for the Grateful Dead. Some moments the band channeled the magic of 1977, while at others they clearly sounded like a group that needed to shake things up, which they finally did in February 1979 when Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux departed. That said, the spring tour that year was obviously a high point, as shows from April 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 14, 15, 16, 22, and 24, and May 10, 11 and 14 have all been officially released (I was at May 10 & 11, my 2nd and 3rd Dead shows - my first, Englistown on September 3, 1977 was also offically released - quite a start to my long strange trip!).  This soundboard recording captures the Dead during that excellnt Spring 1978 run, in Lexington on April  21, 1978, 47 years ago today. By the way, this was just the 2nd time that the band played Werewolves of London!

M&C 1978 - Back To Back - #1: The 1970s was a time of transformation in rock music. Not only did new genres of music, such as Punk and New Wave, emerge and flourish, but also long time bands reinvented themselves. The Jefferson Airplane, for example, became The Jefferson Starship. Fleetwood Mac transformed from a blues band to becoming one of the founders of the album oriented rock sound. The Bee Gees abandoned pop music to become leaders of the disco nation. While their change may not have been as dramatic as the 3 just mentioned, the Byrds also evolved during the late 1970s. After the band broke up in 1973, former members worked on and off with each other throughout the rest of the decade. In 1979, 3 of them, McGuinn, Clark and Hillman formally reunited to record an album and tour. The seeds of that partnership were sown in early 1978, when McGuinn and Clark played a series of acoustic shows together at small venues. Billy Joel - 1978-02-18 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

In 1973, Billy Joel released his 2nd album, Piano Man, which climbed into the Top 30 on the Billboard charts. The title track had similar success on the singles charts, while the tune, Captain Jack, became a staple on FM radio. Over the next 3 years, however, Joel bounced back and forth between New York and Los Angeles, struggling to match the success of Piano Man. His 1976 album Turnstiles, despite containing tunes that today are considered classics, such as Miami 2017, New York State of Mind, Summer Highland Falls, Say Goodbye to Hollywood and Prelude > Angry Young Man, failed to crack the top 100 on the Billboard charts. No one could have expected, therefore, what transpired when Joel released the album The Stranger, in September 1977. The disc went to #2 on the US charts, and sold over 10 million copies, becoming Columbia Records largest selling album up to that time. The album yielded 4 top 25 singles, Just the Way You Are at #3, Movin' Out (Anthony's Song) at #17, Only the Good Die Young" at #24, and "She's Always a Woman at #17. The album also featured the tune Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, which received major airplay on FM stations. This TV soundboard recording captures Joel promoting the album on Saturday Night Live, on February 18, 1978, 47 years ago today.

Steve Winwood - 1978-08-19 - Gloucestershire, UK (SBD)

As mentioned in earlier post featuring Eric Clapton, Blind Faith skipped Woodstock, instead playing a show in Santa Barbara. EC wanted to play at Bethel, but Steve Winwood and Ginger Baker out voted him. Dissension rained in Blind Faith, and by the end of the summer, the band would be no more. 

In any event, this soundboard recording captures Steve Winwood out solo 9 years after Woodstock, in Gloucestershire, on August 19, 1978, 46 years ago today.
