On January 12, 1993, at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, Cream was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce took the stage that night, it marked the first time in 25 years that they had played together in front of a live audience. For a few moments, all the tensions and anger that had ripped the band apart were forgotten, as Cream demonstrated why they were part of rock royalty, playing 3 of their classic tunes -- Sunshine of Your Love, Born Under A Bad Sign, and Crossroads. The band had rehearsed for their induction the previous day at the Power Plant Studios in LA. They had been wary about performing, but once they began to rehearse, it was as if they had never been apart. Of course, despite how well the 2 days went, it would be another 12 years before Cream again played together on stage! By the way, for EC, it was the 2nd of his record 3 inductions, the other 2 coming in 1992 as a member of the Yardbirds and then in 2000 as a solo artist.

This excellent audience recording captures Cream during that reunion a dozen years after their induction, on the 2nd of 3 nights at Madison Square Garden, on October 25, 2005, 21 years ago today.  Earlier in the year, they had played 4 nights at the Royal Albert Hall in London on May 2, 3, 5 and 6.  Those 7 shows were the last time thr trio ever played together.

1960s - #1:  As 1967 began, Cream picked up where they left off at the end of 1966, playing a series of clubs and colleges across the United Kingdom. Amazingly, while the band had been together since July 1966, they had played only 1 show - on December 17, 1966 in Paris - outside their home country. All that would change in late February, when they launched their first European Tour, followed by their first U.S. shows in March. Cream would become a world wide phenomenon, which ironically, would become the source of their eventual breakup just over a year later. In early 1967, however, Clapton, Baker and Bruce were in peak form, enjoying their new partnership and creating a sound unlike anything heard prior. This soundboard recording captures them in Stockholm on March 7, 1967, 59 years ago today and just 3 weeks prior to their first American shows.

1960s - #5: In March of 1967, Cream made their first US appearance, playing 9 shows at the RKO Theater in NY as part of radio DJ Murray the K’s "Music in the 5th Dimension" concert series. They then went into the studio in NY to record their second album, Disraeli Gears, which, when released in November, would hit #4 on the US Billboard charts. Disraeli Gears featured Cream classics such as Sunshine Of Your Love, Strange Brew, SWLABR and Tales of Brave Ulysses. This soundboard recording finds them back home in London after that recording session, playing the Ricky Tick Club on April 22, 1967, 58 years ago today.  The band provides a preview of  Disraeli Gears, playing Sunshine of Your Love to open the show.

The 1993 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, the first one not held in New York at the Waldorf Astoria, could be described by borrowing from Charles Dickens - "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. "  On the bright side, all 3 members of Cream - Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce - showed up and played together for the first time since 1968. In addition, the suriving members of The Doors were all present, and played 3 songs with Eddie Vedder on vocals.  On the downside, Van Morrison skipped the ceremony, having Robbie Robertson accept the homor on his behalf, while the Counting Crows were recruited to play Caravan.  Far worse, while all 4 members of Creedence were in attendance for their induction, John Foegerty refused to play with them, continuing the 20 year old feud that effectively destroyed the band.  Instead, he was backed by Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Robertson on 3 CCR tunes.

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on January 12, 1993, 31 years ago today.  A complete list of inductees is provided below.

1960s - #3:  On January 10, 1967, 55 years ago this very day Cream recorded a session for the BBC radio program Saturday Club (which would air 4 days later) at the Playhouse Theater in London, the same location where The Beatles recorded their 1964 appearance on that shows that we featured earlier this month. Incredibly, while the band had been together since July 1966, they had played only 1 show - on December 17, 1966 in Paris - outside their home country. All that would change in late February, when they launched their first European Tour, followed by their first U.S. shows in March. Cream would become a world wide phenomenon, which ironically, would become the source of their eventual breakup just over a year later. In January 1967, however, Clapton, Baker and Bruce were in peak form, enjoying their new partnership and creating a sound unlike anything heard prior., as evidenced in this FM broadcast.

1966 - Eric Clapton - Guitar. Jack Bruce - Bass. Ginger Baker - Drums. The "cream" of the crop of jazz and blues musicians in the London music scene pooled their talents in 1966, to create rock's first classic power trio. While their time together would be short, Cream proved to be one of the most influential rock groups in history, and are often considered the first "super group". They would pave the way for improvisational, free form jams that would become the hallmark of psychedelic rock scene. This BBC FM Broadcast captures Cream on December 9, 1966 in London, 55 years ago today and just about 5 months after their live debut in July. The broadcast features shorter versions of their songs as compared to later live performances. but is an important historical document of the band at its birth.

Cream 1968 - Back to Back - #1: In August 1968, Cream released the double album, Wheels of Fire, which went to the top of the charts in the US and reached the #3 position in the UK. The album included soon to be classics such as White Room and Born Under A Bad Sign, as well as an incredible live version of Crossroads. Despite the album’s commercial and critical success, Cream was on its last legs as a band. Lead guitarist Eric Clapton had grown tired of the psychedelic jamming that become Cream’s trademark and wanted to go in a new direction. He was heavily influenced at the time by The Band’s debut album, Music From Big Pink, with its simpler approach to songs that drew from such genres as folk, country and blues. Clapton was also tired of playing peace maker between bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker. With all 3 members in agreement that the end had come, Cream launched a farewell tour, which consisted of 22 shows at 19 venues in the US between in October and November 1968, as well two concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London on November 26. This  soundboard recording from Los Angeles captures them during that Farewell Tour on October 19, 1968, 53 years ago today! More importantly, the show is electrifying.  Eric is on fire, and plays with total abandon, living up to the "Clapton Is God" graffiti scrawled throughout London's subway stations.   Download this one to capture Cream at their birth!

When Cream toured the US in spring of 1968, they made a fateful decision - they would end the band! The tensions between Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, Clapton's need to pursue different musical directions, and the rigors of touring, all combined to bring Cream's 2 year rock and roll ride to end. But what a ride it was, as the trio combined rock, blues and psychedelia to take the rock world by storm. Songs such as Sunshine of Your Love, Tales of Brave Ulysses, and White Room became rock anthems. Their live shows were legendary for extended jams, showcasing each member's incredible skills. Despite the decision to disband, Cream stayed together for the rest of 1968, releasing the albums Wheels of Fire and Goodbye, and playing a farewell tour in the fall. After that, they would not play together again until their introduction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993! This high quality audience recording from 51 years ago today, May 25, 1968, captures the band during the tour where they decided to call it quits. Cream may be long gone, but download this one to preserve the memories!

Disraeli Gears featured Cream classics such as Sunshine of Your Love, Strange Brew, SWLABR and Tales of Brave Ulysses. Cream returned to the states in August 1967 to launch their first US tour, playing multiple nights at some of the classic venues in rock history, including the Fillmore West, the Café Au Go Go and The Whiskey A Go Go (go here for complete tour details). Despite the upcoming release of Disraeli Gears, Cream generally only played Tales of Brave Ulysses and Sunshine of Your Love from that album during these shows. Performing to the counter culture right after the Summer of Love, Cream started to stretch out on stage, with some songs reaching 20 minutes. Extended jams in numbers like Spoonful, NSU, Toad and Sweet Wine became live favorites for both the band and their audience. This soundboard recording from Detroit from October 15, 1967, 51 years ago today, captures the last night of that historic tour. By the way, the more I read about this bootleg, the more I’m led to believe that this might be the absolute best sounding recording of Cream you will find. Moreover, it also appears that this may capture the band at their absolute peak, jamming perfectly, taking chances, exploring the boundaries of rock and roll as no one had up to that point. For more on this amazing show, check out this link.  Then, after your done reading, download this one and experience Clapton, Baker and Bruce in all their glory!

Cream was part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 1993 induction class that included Sly and The Family Stone (see our September 1 post), Dick Clark, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. Etta James, and Van Morrison. As we also mentioned in the Sly Stone posts, that induction ceremony had more memorable moments, both good and bad, than almost any other. One of the good moments was when Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton performed together as Cream for the first time since the band’s break up in 1968. You can find that performance, and the prior day’s rehearsal here.

Today's post takes us back to the early days of Cream.  In March of 1967, Cream made their first US appearance, playing 9 shows at the RKO Theater in NY as part of radio DJ Murray the K’s "Music in the 5th Dimension" concert series. They then went into the studio in NY to record their second album, Disraeli Gears, which when released in November would hit number 4 on the US Billboard charts. When Cream toured the US in the Spring of 1968, they established a record at the time for the longest tour by a British band in North America. Yet even as they were filling venues from California to New York, the band was coming apart. When the tour ended, basically so did Cream The band members announced that they would dissolve the group by year, after a final farewell tour in the US and 2 dates at the Royal Albert Hall in London, The tensions between Clapton, Baker and Bruce simply had become too much for the trio to endure. This soundboard recording captures Cream on March 7, 1968, 47 years ago today, at The Fillmore in San Francisco.
