Marshall Crenshaw 1982 - Back To Back -  #1:  In April 1982, Marshall Crenshaw released his self-titled debut album. I bought it on the advice of a buddy, who had heard about Crenshaw on WBCN-FM, while attending college up in Massachusetts. The disc went on my turntable and rarely came off! Little wonder since esteemed rock critic Robert Christgau rated the album an A, while Rolling Stone gave it 4 stars.Why Marshall Crenshaw never took rock by storm is beyond me. The album has everything – catchy tunes, great hooks, excellent vocals, and Beatle and Buddy Holly influences (FYI - Crenshaw played John Lennon in an off-Broadway production of Beatlemania and portrayed Buddy Holly in the movie, La Bamba). Songs such as Cynical Girl, Someday Someway, and Rocking Around in NYC get in your head, grab you and never let go. Yet, while he received critical acclaim, super stardom never followed. Given that it will be 35 years ago this JuLy that Live Aid took place, our them for July 2020, our them will be The 1980s. Every show we post will have taken place between 1980 and 1989 a decade that saw:

• Several of the classic bands from the 1960s and 1970s disband or take significant time off, some permanently, such as Led Zeppelin due to the death of John Bonham, and others temporarily, such as The Who, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones. 
• The rise of new wave and punk acts to positions of prominence, though some like The Clash, would burn out, others such as Elvis Costello would radically change their sound, and still others, such as U2, would find themselves on top of the rock world. 
• Rock again would become associated with social causes, as evidenced by Live Aid, Farm Aid, The Amnesty Concerts, and The Bridge School Benefits. 
• The rise of MTV, a medium which originally served as a vehicle for new acts, but which by decade's end would help artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac and even the Grateful Dead find a vast nationwide audience.

Graham Parker - 1988-06-26 - Boston, MA (FM)

Graham Parker 1988 - Back to Back - #1: After splitting with The Rumour in 1980, Graham Parker’s solo career during the rest of that decade was a series of ups and downs. His 1982 disc Another Grey Area, charted well in both the US and UK. In 1985, he scored his only top 40 hit in the US with the tune Wake Up (Next to You). Yet, despite these commercial successes, Parker could not manage to stay with a record label. He moved from Arista to Electra to Atlantic between 1982 and 1987. He bottomed out during that stint with Atlantic, as the label dropped him without releasing a single album or song! In 1988, he signed with RCA and took control of producing his own records, with help from guitarist Brinsley Schwarz. He released the album The Mona Lisa's Sister in the spring of 1988, which was hailed as a comeback by several critics. The album spent 19 weeks on the Billboard charts and generated a college radio hit with Get Started (Start a Fire). The disc had a sparser, back to basics sound, similar to a trend that would emerge in rock in the 1990s. This FM broadcast captures Parker in Boston on June 26, 1988, 32 years ago today, on tour in support of The Mona Lisa's Sister. GD 1985 - Back to Back -  #1: In 1985, the Grateful Dead  celebrated their 20th anniversary. Deadheads tend to passionately debate the quality of the music that year. Some feel that the band, inspired by their milestone anniversary, played their best shows of the 80s. Others don't believe the music was much different from the prior years, and certainly not up to the standard of 1987 or 1989. I tend to lean in the direction that 1985 provided many inspired moments especially during the Spring run, though it’s clear that by year end, Jerry was mired deep in a cloud of drugs which would eventually contribute his near death coma in 1986.  This soundboard recording captures the band during that Spring tour, in Cincinnati, on June 24, 1985, 35 years ago today. Led Zep 1980 - Back to Back - #1:  Unlike the massive stadium tours that Led Zep had embarked on in the late 1970’s, their 1980 European run consisted of just 14 shows in smaller venues. The set list incorporated 3 songs from their 1979 album In Through The Out Door - Hot Dog, All Of My Love and In The Evening - as well as the first performance of Train Kept A-Rollin since 1969. This soundboard recording captures the opening night of the tour on June 17, 1980, 40 years ago today. The concert is notable because it concludes with Whole Lotta Love and Heartbreaker, 2 tunes which the band rarely played during this run. Download this one to hear Led Zep embark on their last ride together, as John Bonham would die from alcohol abuse just about 2 months after the end of the tour. The disc was comprised of 11 new tracks, all written by Van The Man, his first album of all original material since Back on Top in 1999. Keep It Simple debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at #10 which incredibly, made it the highest charting album of his long storied career. Morrison promoted the album with a short, 5 show, US tour that March, then returned home for a spring tour of Europe. Grateful Dead - 1980-06-19 - Anchorage, AL (SBD)

GD 1980- Back to Back - #1:  In 1980, the Grateful Dead celebrated the band's 15th anniversary. Most folks know that to commemorate that event, in September and October the band played a series of legendary shows in San Francisco, New Orleans and New York that featured each night an acoustic set followed by 2 electric sets.  What most people don't know, whoever, is that early in the year the band took another "long strange trip" - all the way up to Alaska!  The first and only set of shows played by the band in 49th state took place at the 2000 seat West High School Auditorium (yes - a real high school) during the summer solstice.  As a result, Alaska lived up to its nickname of the Land of The Midnight Sun - 3 plus hours after the 8 pm start time,  people walked out of the concert into broad daylight. This soundboard recording captures the Dead on the first night of the Alaska run on June 19, 1980, 4 decades ago today.  Stop back tomorrow and the next days for parts 2 and 3.

U2 - 2011-06-17 - Anaheim CA (IEM)

U2 2011 - Back To Back - #1:  On June 30, 2009, U2 launched 360 degrees tour, which encompassed 110 shows over a 2 year stretch. The tour was undertaken in support of the band's then new album, No Line On The Horizon. Why a name for the tour that was different from the album title? U2 decided to name the tour after their unique stage configuration allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. The tour became the highest grossing by any rock band in history, with $736 million in ticket sales. The set list for the 2011 portion of the tour featured more songs from Actung Baby, to mark the 20th anniversary of that album. GD 1991 - Back To Back - #2: As promised yesterday, here's the 2nd half of our BAck to Back set featuring the Grateful Dead in 1991.  This one is a soundboard that captures the Dead on June 17, 1991, 19 years ago toda, at  Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. Deadbase ranked this as one of the ten best of 1991 (and I was there!). It's the only time the band ever opened a show with Eyes of The World!

GD 1991 - Back To Back - #1:  As mentioned in numerous posts on So Many Roads, between 1989 and 1991, the Grateful Dead played some of their finest performances not just since Jerry Garcia recovered from his diabetic coma in 1987, but also since the band’s peak in the 1970s.  The list of officially released show from that period is impressive to say the least:

• a show from Philadelphia from July 7, 1989
• the Giant Stadium Shows from July 9 and 10, 1989
• The 2 night stand at RFK Stadium from July 12 and 13, 1989
• the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989 
• the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989
• the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990 
• the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990; 
• 2 (yes 2) box sets from Spring 1990, featuring every show from that tour - the only other tour to be released in its entirety besides Europe 1972
• a show from from Mountain View CA from June 16, 1990
• a show from from Pittsburgh from July 8, 1990
• the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990. 
• a show from Paris from October 27, 1990 
• a show from Washington DC from June, 14, 199
• a show from Pine Knob from June 20, 1991 
• a show from Madison Square Garden from September 10, 1991, featuring Bradford Marsalis
• a show from Boston Garden on September 25, 1991

Bruce Hornbsy 1997 - Back to Back - #1:  Bruce Hornsby spent the summer of 1997 the same way he spent the summer the prior year - touring as part of the Furthur Festival.  Launched in 1996, a year after the death of Jerry Garcia and the official end of the Grateful Dead, the Furthur Festival featured a host of bands with ties to the Dead, such as Bob Weir & Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, Los Lobos, Jorma Kaukonern, and the Balck Crowes.  Hornsby, as a former Grateful Dead keyboard player, was a natural fit for the festival. He warmed up for the 1997 version of Furthur with 2 solo shows in California.  This FM broadcast captures the first of those 2 concerts, on June 14, 1997, 23 years ago today.  Stop back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back to Back set.

Grateful Dead - 1985-06-14 - Berkeley, CA (SBD) 

GD 1985 - Back to Back - #1: Today we begin a 3 part Back to Back entry featuring the Grateful Dead in the Spring of 1985, the year the band celebrated their 20th anniversary. Deadheads tend to passionately debate the quality of the music that year. Some feel that the band, inspired by their milestone anniversary, played their best shows of the 80s. Others don't believe the music was much different from the prior years, and certainly not up to the standard of 1987 or 1989. I tend to lean in the direction that 1985 provided many inspired moments especially during the Spring run, though it’s clear that by year end, Jerry was mired deep in a cloud of drugs which would eventually contribute his near death coma in 1986. This soundboard, from June 14, 1985, 35 years ago today, at one of the Dead’s favorite venue, The Greek Theater in Berkeley, is emblematic of the band’s new found creativity that year - inspired so choices such as Keep on Growin' from the Derek & The Dominoes, unique set list arrangements, such as Morning Dew to open the 2nd Set, and the return of old favorites that hadn’t been played in years, such as Comes A Time in set 2. As long time followers of So Many Roads know, our blog takes a "this day in history" approach to selecting shows. In other words, if it's June 13, than the concert we post took place on June 13, sometime between 1950 and the present day. 

Every now and then, a day rolls by and we don't have a new show associated with that date. Some times we've gotten around that by posting my monthly column on that day. Other times, we've used some other type of informational post. 

Well, in the spirit of trying something new, this time around, since I don't have a new show to post on June 13, I've re-posted download links for many of the prior shows we posted on that date. All you have to do is search for the show you want - just copy and paste it from the list below into the search box in the upper corner of the blog - and when you get there, you'll find a new link!
