December's Theme At So Many Roads

For December, our theme will be the 1960s & 1970s. I bet 90%, maybe 95%, of all the music I listen to and all the concerts I attended feature bands who got their start in the 1960s and 1970s!  We'll have at least one post every day of the month, except December 25!

Enjoy the tunz!

CSN 1982 - Back To Back - #1: In 1980/81, Stephen Stills & Graham Nash began working together on a studio album using outside vocalists such as Art Garfunkel, and Timothy B. Schmitt, to sing in place of where David Crosby might have been. Executives at Atlantic Records, however, had little interest in anything but a CSN album.  The insisted that Stills and Nash bring in Crosby to finish the record, forcing the duo to start paying for the sessions out-of-pocket until they did.  Eventually, Stills and Nash decided to invite Crosby to participate at the eleventh hour. The resulting disc, Daylight Again, the first by the trio since 1977, climbed to #8 on the Billboard charts and spawned 2 top 20 singles, Wasted On The Way, which climbed to #9 on the charts and Southern Cross, which reached #18. This FM broadcast captures CSN on tour in support of Daylight Again in Los Angeles on November 26, 1982, 30 years ago today. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this set.

Rolling Stones Back To Back 1981 - #1: When the Rolling Stones went on tour of the US in 1981 in support of their soon to be number #1 album Tattoo You, Mick Jagger wasn’t completely in favor of hitting the concert trail once again. That didn’t stop Jagger or the band from finding ways to make plenty of money. Ticket sales for the 50 date itinerary grossed over $50 million, at an average ticket price of $16. The Stones garnered another $1 million from Jovan Musk, who in return were allowed to print their name on each and every ticket sold. It was quite ironic that the Stones, with their bad boy image, who had railed against advertising in the lyrics to Satisfaction, would be one of the first groups to engage a corporate sponsor. More cash rolled in on December 18, as the Stones’ show from Hampton VA, the next to last performance of the tour, became the first concert by any band to be broadcast on pay per view (the Grateful Dead had used closed circuit TV for their October 31, 1980 broadcast from Radio City). The end of the tour the next night didn’t mean the end of the financial windfall for the Stones. In June 1982, the band released the live album, Still Life, featuring highlights from the 1981 tour, which went to number 5 on the Billboard charts, selling over 1 million copies despite less than stellar reviews. In 1983, the Stones released the concert film, Let’s Spend The Night Together, showcasing songs from their 1981 shows on November 5th in New Jersey and December 13th in Tempe. The film grossed another $50 million for the band. All that money making did have one residual benefit for fans of the Stones. The band taped almost every show of the tour to amass material for the live album and movie. As such, over 30 soundboards from the 1981 tour are in circulation. This one captures the Stones on November 23, 1981, 40 years ago today, in Chicago. Download this one, the come back tomorrow and the next days for nights 2 and 3 in the Windy City.

Please Support Why Hunger

In 1975, the late Harry Chapin and Bill Ayres founded Why Hunger, an organization whose goal was to put an end to hunger suffered by 49 million Americans and nearly 1 billion people worldwide. That same year, they came up with an idea to reach out for donations and aid using the power of the music and the radio. In conjunction with WNEW-FM, the leading rock station in America at the time, they launched Hungerthon, a 24 hour radio broadcast designed to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in the United States. Live music from rock artists concerned with this serious problem became a staple of each Hungerthon broadcast. Hungerthon has been an annual even since 1985, held right around Thanksgiving.  I heard my first Hungerton Broadcast on WNEW in 1986 and have been donating ever since.

So, in this month when we feast to celebrate all that we have been blessed with in life, please think of those who go hungry and give to WhyHunger.  You can donate here. Or you can buy my book - I'm donating 25% of my sales to Whyhunger this month.

If you have enjoyed the music we have brought you here at So Many Roads over the last 12 years, nothing would make me happier than if you donate to this worthy cause.

Van Morrison 1987 - Back To Back - #1: In September 1987, Van Morrison released his 17th studio album, entitled Poetic Champion s Compose. The disc would climb to #90 on the Billboard charts, though critical reviews were mixed. None of that mattered to me. When I bought the CD soon after its release, the first time I listened I knew I had found something.  Song #7, Someone Like You, touched me in a way unlike any other love song I had heard. It is the tale of finally finding the one who completes you after spending years of "soul searching” and “traveling all around the world”. A perfect love song, but not once, however, does the word “love” appear in the lyrics! I knew that one day, if I ever found the right girl and got married, that would be the song we would walk down the aisle to.  Five years later, it came to pass, and now we are approaching wedding anniversary #30 in 2022. And to this day, when I look at her, I still know in my heart and soul, that "someone like you, makes it all worthwhile."  This audience recording captures Van on his home turf in Belfast soon after the release of Poetic Champion s Compose, playing a set that includes Someone Like You, on November 22, 1987, 34 years ago this very day. Download this one, then comeback tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

NOTE - this recording is a good, some would say fair audience tape.  It is no where near the quality we usually post at So Many Roads.  It's posted for sentimental reasons as tapes of Van playing Someone Like You are few and far between. Jerry Barcia 1976 - Back to Back - #1: If any of you grew up watching Bugs Bunny cartoons, as I did, you’ll know that whenever Bugs needed a vacation, he headed for Pismo Beach. Despite his best efforts, he never quite got there, always winding up at a different destination, the result of “taking a left at Albuquerque.” I always thought that Pismo Beach was simply a fictitious destination, the creation of the vivid imagination of the cartoon writers. So I was stunned when I came across this soundboard recording of Jerry Garcia from November 19, 1976, 45 years ago today, from the one and only Pismo Beach. Download this one then come back tomorrow the 2nd half of this Back To Back set  from Bugs' favorite destination!

Bob Dylan 1994 - Back To Back - #1: While MTv Unplugged had aired since 1989, it became “the show to do” in 1991 thanks to Paul McCartney’s appearance, which was later released as an album. Show producer Alex Coletti went on to say that had McCartney not released the disc, the concept would have never gained the cult status that it went on to enjoy. The show received another boost in 1992, when Eric Clapton’s taped his January 16 performance for the Unplugged album, featuring an acoustic reworking of Layla. The disc sold 10 million copies and earned 6 Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Rock Male Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song. In 1994, Bob Dylan joined the list of legends who appeared on Unplugged.  This soundboard recording captures the raw recordings from November 17, 1994, 27 years ago today, the first of 2 days of taping, which would eventually be edited and remastered for the broadcast and album.  Downlead this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Eric Clapton 1999 - Back To Back - #1: After spending most of 1998 on the road touring behind the the album Pilgrim, Eric Clapton took the first 10 months of 1999 off. He was spent from the tour, especially the emotional nature of songs from the album that dealt with the tragic, accidental death of his 4 year old son, Connor. When he finally went back out on the road in late 1990, he headed to Japan, where in played a 14 night rum visiting 5 different cities.
