The Pretenders - 2024-08-14 - Wheatland, CA (IEM) 

I've seen the Pretenders live 3 times - early on in their career in October 1981 at the Palladium, in April 1987 at Radio City Music Hall after the commercial success of the albums Learning To Crawl & Get Close, and then just a few years ago, in April 2018, at the Morristown PAC. That gap of 31 years between 1987 and 2018 is the 4th longest I ever went between seeing a concert by the same band. (FYI - the 3 longest gaps were: 40 years between seeing Pat Benatar in 1981 and 2021, 38 years between my first America concert in 1978 and the 2nd one in 2016, and 34 years between seeing John Hiatt in 1987 and then again in 2021).  If you like keeping track of statisics releated to the concerts you attended, similar to what I've just discussed, my book has a whole section filled with charts I'm sure you'll enjoy!

In any event, this IEM recording captures The Pretenders in in Wheatland on August 14, 2024, just 2 years ago today. The band was on tour in support of their 12th studio album which had been released in late 2023, entitled Relentless.

2020s - #7: In January 27, 2014, Billy Joel launched his residency at Madison Square Garden, an ongoing tour in which he would play the "World's Most Famous Arena" once a month until folks stopped buying ticktes. At his thirteenth consecutive monthly performance (January 9, 2015), Joel broke his 2006 record for the most consecutive sold-out shows at the venue. On July 1, 2015, Joel set the record for most shows at the Garden by a single artist; his 65th all-time show broke the record previously held by Elton John. While the resdiency had to be interupted on occaision for illness, scheduling conflicts, and most seriously, the COVID pandemic, it continued on for over a decade.  This TV SBD recoding captures highlights of the 100th show of the residency (and 146th overall at the Garden), on March 28, 2024, 2 years ago today.  The run would continue for 4 more shows, coming to an end on July 25, 2024, the 104th show of the residency and 150th in total at the World's Most Famous Arena.  Note - in typical TV fashion, all the advertising talked about this performance as Billy's 100th at the Garden, failing to point out it was the 100th since he began playing once a month, not his 100th overall at the venue. He had passed that mark at show 54 of the residency.

2020s - #1: In 2023 U2 became the first band to play at Sphere, an innovative 18,000 seat arena located at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. Other bands to follow in U2's footsteps included Dead & Company and The Eagles. Sphere, per Wikipedia "is being marketed for its immersive video and audio capabilities, which include a 16K resolution wraparound interior LED screen, speakers with beamforming and wave field synthesis technologies, and 4D physical effects. The venue's exterior also features 580,000 sq ft of LED displays. Sphere measures 366 feet  high and 516 feet. The arena cost $2.3 billion, making it the most expensive entertainment venue built in the Las Vegas Valley."  U2 returned to Sphere in early 2024, playing a series of shows from Jnaury to March.  This IEM recording captures the final night in Las Vegas, on March 2, 2024, 2 years ago today.

Paul McCartney - 2024-12-19 -  London, UK (IEM)

I've seen Sir Paul 9 times, and the last 4, in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2022, I went with both my wife and my twin boys. We started that run back in June 2015, a Father's Day show in Philadelphia, which was also the first concert my boys ever went to! The set list that night included the tune Macca wrote for Destiny, one of my boy's favorite video games. We followed that up with an August 7, 2016 show at Giants Stadium on what what would have been my Dad's 83rd birthday had he not passed away in 2012. Sir Paul broke out Birthday that night, the first time I had ever heard him play that song live. Then on September 15, 2017, at Madison Square Garden on my Mom's 85th birthday, Paul entertained us as almost no other performer can, telling stories, paying tribute to lost friends and lovers, playing over 40 songs scanning almost 60 years of musical history. He played Jet, my boy's favorite McCartney tune, a song that had been missing from the 2 previous shows they attended.  And then, as I mentioned in my Springsteen post earlier this month, he brought Bruce and Miami Steve on stage for what turned out to be back to back renditions of I Saw her Standing There.  Most recently, just a few weeks ago on July 16, 2022, the 4 of us Saw Sir Paul at Met Life stadium, just 2 days before his 80th birthday!  Another 3 hour masterpiece, and another guest appearance by Springsteen, for 2 songs, his Glory days and The Beatles I Wanna Be Your Man, plus he sat in during the closing Abbey Road medley to add some blistering guitar work. The encore included a 2nd guest appearance, by a virtual John Lennon.  using footage from the Rooftop Concert, Paul and John did a virtual duet on I've Got A Feeling, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Given Sir Paul's age, I may never get to see him live again, but the memories, especially from the last 4 shows, will last forever. 

This soundboard recording captures Sir Paul in London on December 19, 2024, just 1 year ago today.  Macca had gone back out of the road in late 2024, bringing the Got Back tour to South America, where he had also played in 2023, and to Europe, his first shows on that continent since before the pandemic. This show brought the tour to end in grand fashion, with a performance of Wonderful Christmastime accompanied by The Capital Choir, a guest appearance by Ronnie Wood on Get Back, the reappearnce of his bass guitar that had been missing for 50 years, and finally, a reunion with his fellow surviving Beatle, Ringo Starr on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) and Helter Skelter! By the way, I included an audience recording of the show as well as it contains the soundcheck for the show, which was not part of the IEM recording.

Tedeschi Trucks Band - 2024-10-08 - Capitol Theatre, Portchester, NY (Webcast)

TTB 2024 - Back To Back - #1: For a brief 18 month period from February 1970 to July 1971, the Capitol Theatre in Portchester NY (not to be confused with the Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ) was one of the premier concert venues on the East coast. Name a major rock act and they most likely played the venue. The Allman Brothers, Hot Tuna, Yes, Leon Russell, Grand Funk Railroad, Mountain, James Taylor, Traffic, Van Morrison, Jefferson Airplane and Derek & The Dominos, just to name a few, took the stage at the Capitol. The Grateful Dead were one of the most frequent visitors to the venue, including a 6 night run in February 1971. The Capitol eventually closed as a rock venue, then spent 40 years as a Broadway style theater and a catering hall. In 2012, however, the Capitol once again becam a rock and roll venue. In doing so, it never forgot its jam band roots. The bar in the newly renovated Capitol is named Garcia's, in honor of the late, great spiritual leader and lead guitarist of the Grateful Dead. And a new generation of jam bands have made the Capitol home, including Govt Mule, Phil & Friends and the Tedeschi Trucks Band. So, how many of you knew that every year on July 4, Washington DC hosts a music festival that draws hundreds of thousands of people?  If you don't, its probably because its not billed as a festival, but rather as a celebration of America's Independence. Since 1980, (with the exception of 2020 & 2021 due to the COVID pandemic) A Capitol Fourth, a concert featuring dozens of musical guests that culminates in an extraordinay fireworks show,  has taken place from presented from the west lawn of the United States Capitol Building. The concert is broadcast on PBS, NPR and the American Forces Network. While the concert features such traditions as opening with te National Anthem, and closing with the National Symphony Orchestra playing Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture with accompaniment from an Army artillery squad as a prelude to the fireworks, in between some of rock's finest have taken the stage over the years. Past performers have included John Fogerty, Smokey Robinson, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Little Richard, Huey Lewis and the News, Jerry Lee Lewis, Neil Diamond, The Beach Boys, The Four Tops, and Belinda Carlisle, just to name a few.  This TV soundboard recording captures the one and only Frankie Valli at the 2014 concert, on July 4, 2014, 11 years ago today. Los Lobos 2024 - Back To Back - #1:  In 1973, original members David Hidalgo, Louie Pérez, Cesar Rosas and Conrad Lozano began their career playing revved-up versions of Mexican folk music in restaurants and at parties. In 1984, the group added saxophonist Steve Berlin, released its full-length, major-label debut, How Will the Wolf Survive?, and was named Artist Of The Year by Rolling Stone magazine. Then in 1987, their cover went to #1 on the Billboard charts whil etheir album By Light of The Moon received rave critical reviews, with Rolling Stone, All Music, and Robert Christgau, just to name 3, all singing its praises. While Los Lobos never agian achieved that level of commercial and crtical acclaim, they have remained a constant on the music scene, releasin over a dozen albums and developing a reputation for their outastanding live performances.  The 50th anniverary tour took them to Hawaii for two shows in early 2024.  This soundboard matrix recording capturs night 1, on Janaury 26, 20204, just a year ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.
