1994 - In early 1993, Bruce Hornsby released the album. Harbor Lights, his first disc without his backing band, The Range. In their place, Hornsby brought in an all star cast of supporting musicians, including including Jerry Garcia, Pat Metheny, Branford Marsalis, Phil Collins, and Bonnie Raitt. The disc had more of a jazz feel to it than his previous work, allowing Hornsby and hi guests to play extended jams during many of the tunes. Many of those songs, such as the title track, Rainbow’s Cadillac, Fields Of Gray, and Talk Of The Town, would become staples of his live shows for the next 2 decades. This soundboard recording captures Bruce  about a year after the release of the album, Miami on March 31, 1994, 29 years ago today.

1980 - When I was in collge, I had a good friend who went to UMass, where thanks to WBCN, he was clued in to the energing punk and new wave scence. One of the band's he introduced all of us to was Boston's own Robin Lane & The Chartbusters.  Their debut disc, with songs like When Things Go Wrong, Without You, and It Will Only Hurt A Little While, just to name 3, were the perfect blend of punk and new wave, all powered by Robin's slightly gravelly, definitely powerful, vocals. On August 10, 1980, I got to see Robyn at the Royal Manor North, one of the countless NJ rock clubs that thrived in the early 1980s.  If you lived in the area at the time, you'll recognize that name, along with other like Creations, the Cuss From Hoe, the Meadowbrook, the Fast Lane, the Stone Pony, etc (go here for a whole blog dedicated to those clubs). In any event, my buddies and I manged to find a spot on the floor directly in front on where Robin was standing.  As the nught wore on, and the beer consumption increased, my friends swore that after each song, Robin was looking directly at me, smiling and trying to flirt.  Sure she was! Despite the beer, I was smart enough to know my friends were trying to get me to do or say something embarrassing.  In any event, the show was great and its a shame Robin and The Chartbusters never found mainstream success. This TV soundboard recording captures Robin back in Boston a few months prior to when I saw her, on March 3, 1980, 43 years ago today. Note - this is a single track, containing the 5 tunes,  If anyone can split it, it would be appreciated!

1990 - While MTv Unplugged had aired since 1989, it became “the show to do” in 1991 thanks to Paul McCartney’s appearance, which was later released as an album. Show producer Alex Coletti went on to say that had McCartney not released the disc, the concept would have never gained the cult status that it went on to enjoy. The show received another boost in 1992, when Eric Clapton’s taped his January 16 performance for the Unplugged album, featuring an acoustic reworking of Layla. The disc sold 10 million copies and earned 6 Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Rock Male Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song. Don Henley jumped on the Unplugged bandwagon before Macca and Slowhand made it fashionable, appearing on March 30, 1900, 33 years ago today, Henley played both Eagles and solo material on Unplugged, as captured in this FM broadcast.

Haynes and Woody, who were fans of power trios such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, recruited Matt Abts to handle the drums. The new band, affectionately known to its fans as The Mule, released their self titled debut album in October 1995. 1982 - According to the blog Lost Live Dead, The Keystone Berkeley was a sawdust covered dump in a sketchy area of town that sold overpriced, watered down beer to a crowd of doubtful lunatics who were never going to be employee of the month, if they even had jobs. Incredibly, Jerry Garcia, even after he and the Dead were selling millions of albums and selling out 80,000 seat stadiums, continued to play the Keystone. In fact, according to the blog Jerry Garcia’s Brokedown Palaces, he played the Keystone at least 206 times between 1971 and 1984. Garcia shows at the Keystone almost never sold tickets in advance. Rather, they were available day of show only, first come, first serve for in a venue that officially held about 500 people Usually, Jerry didn’t come on stage until after 11:00 pm and shows ran right up until 2:00 am - last call - making for very late weeknights for those in attendance. My guess is lots of folks called in sick to work or school the next day. In any event, this soundboard recording captures the Jerry Garcia Band at the Keystone on March 27, 1982, 41 years ago today. By the way, since we brought you some acoustic Garcia earlier this month, we figured it was only right to bring you some elcctric!

The show had its hey day between its debut and 2002, when 67 of its 98 episodes aired. This soundboard recording captures James Taylor on the shows's 10th episode, in New York on March 26, 1997, 26 years ago today!

I have uploaded a new source that includes 17 additional tracks - its probably a combination of both the March and May VH1 performances - some tracks may still be mislabled but now you have it all, I believe.

1988 - In September 1987, Van Morrison released his 17th studio album, entitled Poetic Champion s Compose. The disc would climb to #90 on the Billboard charts, though critical reviews were mixed. None of that mattered to me. When I bought the CD soon after its release, the first time I listened I knew I had found something. Song #7, Someone Like You, touched me in a way unlike any other love song I had heard. It is the tale of finally finding the one who completes you after spending years of "soul searching” and “traveling all around the world”. A perfect love song, but not once, however, does the word “love” appear in the lyrics! I knew that one day, if I ever found the right girl and got married, that would be the song we would walk down the aisle to. Five years later, it came to pass, and we are ce\elebrated wedding anniversary #30 in 2022. And to this day, when I look at her, I still know in my heart and soul, that "someone like you, makes it all worthwhile." This sounboard recording captures Van in Norway about 6 months after the release of Poetic Champions Compose, playing a set that includes Someone Like You, on March  25, 1988, 35 years ago this very day

1985 - In 1985, the Grateful Dead celebrated their 20th anniversary. Deadheads tend to passionately debate the quality of the music that year. Some feel that the band, inspired by their milestone anniversary, played their best shows of the 1980s. Others don't believe the music was much different from the prior years, and certainly not up to the standard of 1987 or 1989. I tend to lean in the direction that 1985 provided many inspired moments, especially during the Spring run, though it’s clear that by year's end, Jerry was mired deep in a cloud of drugs which would eventually contribute his near death coma in 1986. This soundboard recording, from Hampton, VA, on May 21, 1985, 38 years ago today, showcases some of that inspiration, as the band weaves in and out of Playing In The Band in the 2nd set and plays a host of rarities, including Down In The Bottom, Ain't Superstitious, Dupree's Diamond Blues, and Might As Well.

1983 - When MTV launched on August 1, 1981, many of the earliest music videos the station aired were from emerging new wave artists such as Blondie, Elvis Costello, and The Pretenders, just to name a few. That said, at some point, it seemed that almost any MTV video from a new band became classified as new wave, whether or not the artist truly fit that genre. Such was the case with Greg Kihn, whose video for the Breakup Song - simply a clip of the tune being played live - was among the first aired by MTV. As a result of that video being played alongside ones by the artists mentioned earlier, Kihn sometimes was referred to as a new wave act, even though he was really a straight ahead rock and roller. Kihn later received even more attention on MTV for his video for the song Jeopardy. It was one of the first “concept” videos aired on MTV, and was later spoofed by Weird Al Yankovic in the video I Lost on Jeopardy. New Wave or not, Kihn’s video singles did well on the charts, with The Breakup Song reaching #15 and Jeopardy climbing all the way to the #2 position. This FM broadcast catches Kihn on March 20, 1983, 4 decades ago today, in Santa Barbara. Download this one, and while you listen, you just might want your MTV!

Being in New York and playing the Beacon clearly inspired the band, so much so that they couldn't get enough of playing live. On March 20, 1992, 31 years ago today, they played an afternoon acoustic set at the Lone Star Roadhouse in NYC, as captued by this WNEW FM Broadcast, as a warm up for their sold at show at the Beacon that night!

1995 - When Sheryl Crow released the album Tuesday Night Music Club in August 1993, it garnered some critical accolades but very little public attention. Crow was featured in Rolling Stone’s “New Faces In Rock” section that year, but neither the album or its initial 2 singles charted. Finally, over a year later, the 3rd single from the disc, All I Wanna Do became a surprise smash hit, climbing to #2 on the Billboard charts and carrying the album to the #3 spot. By 1995, therefore, Sheryl was atop the rock world, the latest female artist to ascend to the throne of Queen of Rock. This soundboard recording captures Sheryl at the Tower Theater on March 19, 1995, 28 years ago today.

1983 - The first 3 times I saw Jerry Garcia, all in the late 1970s & early 1980s, his long time song writing partner Robert Hunter served as his lead in band. Hearing Hunter live is always a unique experience, as his take on the countless tunes he wrote with Jerry is often so different than how they sound when played by the Grateful Dead, This soundboard recording capture's Hunter at a benefit for Wavy Gravy's Camp Winnarainbow, in Berkeley  on March 18, 1983, 40 years ago today. Hunter’s set includes Grateful Dead classic such as FCandyman, Terrapin Station, and Ripple.

1987 - When the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band made it debut at the Artists Right Today benefit in San Francisco, as captured in this soundboard recording, from March 18, 1987, 3 dozen years ago today, it was a harbinger of things to come. Later that year, Jerry took up residence at the historic Lunt-Fontanne Theater in New York’s Broadway district from October 15 to October 31. Garcia played 18 concerts in 13 days, with 5 days featuring both the traditional Broadway matinee and a late show. Each show consisted of an acoustic set followed by an electric set. The 1500 seat theater that once housed the Sound Of Music and Hello Dolly had never quite seen anything like the crowd that attended a Garcia show. We've posted several shows from that Broadway run on this site, so you can grab those along with this wonderful set and get a full dose of The Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band.

1994 - Someone must have had a premonition when they asked a then relatively unknown band to fill in for Van Morrison, who skipped his own induction, at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony on January 16, 1993. Later that year, that band released the album August & Everything, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts in the strength of such songs as Mr. Jones, Round here and Rain King. The Counting Crows had arrived. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of their stunning debut disc, in Los Angeles on March 16, 1994, 29 yeras ago today.

NOTE - the original upload had several tracks with digitla noise.  I found a better copy with no noise and just uploaded it as of 2 pm Eastern time.  So, you may want to grab this new and improved copy!

1999 - On September 29, 1997, the Rolling Stones released Bridges to Babylon, their last studio album of the 20th century. While the album met with mixed reviews, it still climbed to #3 of the Billboard charts in the US and certified platinum by November. The Stones launched a year long world wide tour in support of the album, announcing their plans at a press conference underneath the Brooklyn Bridge! The Bridges to Babylon Tour would become the largest Rolling Stones tour to date, exceeding the sales of their record-breaking 1994-1995 Voodoo Lounge Tour. Estimates are that over 4.5 million people attended the 108 shows played during the tour. Along the way, the Stones visited 25 countries on 4 continents. The band followed that up in 1999 with the No Security tour, in support of the album of the same name, a live disc featuring songs from the Bridges to Babylon run. The No Security tour launched on January 26, 1999 and would feature 43 shows, all is arenas seating 20,000 or less, This soundboard recording captures the Stones during that run, in Philadelphia, on March 15, 1999, 2 dozevn years ago today.

1993 - For the Grateful Dead, 1993 was a difficult year, after Jerry Graci recoverd from yet another health scare suffered in mid 1992.  Garcia really wsn't in the best oof shape to go back out on tour in 1993, but he felt the weight of being the source of income for the for the band's loyal staff and the need to fulfill the fan;'s expectations. The Dead's concerts grew shorter in 1993, and the moments of magical jamming were few and far between. Emblemtaic of that fact, only 2 shows frrom 1993 have been offically released.  yet, despite those issues, the band debuted 5 original songs in 1993 -   Easy Answers, Liberty, Lazy River Road, Eternity, and Days Between - while also including 4 songsfrom 1992 - So Many Roads, Wave To The Wind, Way To Go Home, and Corrina - in their set lits. The band alo=so broke out a host of new cover tunes in their 1993 shows, includig Lucy In The Sky With diamonds, I Fought The Law and Broken Arrow.  This sounboard recording from Richfield from MArch 14, 1993, 3 decades ago today, is a solid representation of the band's year - some magic during Terrapin and Stella Blue, a host of new tunes, and a cover of I Fought The Law to end the night.

1984 - When David Crosby, played in Syracuse on March 14, 1984, 39 years ago today as captured in this soundboard recording, his life was a mess, to put it bluntly. A few years earlier, in 1982, Crosby was arrested and would later spend nine months in prison in Texas on a variety of drug and weapons charges. Then about a year after this concert, in 1985, he was arrested for a hit-and-run incident, as well as possession of a concealed pistol and drug paraphernalia. Crosby had driven into a fence in a Marin County suburb and responding officers found a .45-caliber pistol and cocaine in his car. Seemingly the only place Crosby could function was on stage, as his performance,  does not seem impacted in any way by his troubled personal life.  All his troubles are now past him, as he left this earth earlier this year.  May he rest in peace.

1999 - In February 1999, Elton John launched a solo acoustic your which would encompass 51 shows in North America and Europe. My wife and I were fortunate to catch Elton mear the end of that tour, on October 15, 1999 at Madison Square Garden on New York. Elton played over 2 dozen songs in a show that lasted over 3 hours, with no breaks, making the 20,000 seat arena feel like an intimate piano bar. Truly one of the most memorable shows of the over 165 concerts I have seen over the last 47 years. This excellent audience recording captures Sir Elton early on in that tour, in Pensacola, on March 13, 1999, 2 dozen years ago today.
