After touring with CSN in 1982, Stephen Stills went back out on the road on his own in 1983. The tour found Stills previewing songs such as  from the album Right By You, which would be released in 1984, alongside classics from his days withe The Buffalo Springfield and CSNY.  This soundboard recording captures Stills In Oklahoma on September 30, 1983, 35 years ago today. In Memory Of Marty Balin

Marty Balin, vocalist for the Jefferson Airplane and Starship, passed away on Friday, 9/28. Another of a series of losses of major rock stars in the last few years. Very sad.

Marshall Crenshaw - 1991-09-29 - Charleston, WV (FM) 

As long time readers of So Many Roads Know, one of my favorite musicians is Marshall Crenshaw. Crenshaw is so under rated that he makes John Hiatt, whose lack of attention I have frequently mourned, look like Mr Popularity. Crenshaw was born in Detroit, MI but got his big break in New York, when he played John Lennon in the off Broadway production, Beatlemania. While in New York, he recorded Someday, Someway, a song that Robert Gordon covered and took to #76 on the Billboard charts in 1981. Crenshaw released his version the next year, which went to #36 in the charts, his only top 40 single. Crenshaw’s first 2 albums are must owns for every rock fan. Famed critic Robert Christgau summed those 2 discs up in one simple word - PERFECT. This soundboard recording captures Crenshaw, with some hlep from Mitch Easter,  on September 29, 1991, 27 years ago today in West Virginia.

Grateful Dead - 1977-09-28 - Seattle WA (SBD)

As long time readers of this blog know, I've made my case on numerous occasions for 1977 being the finest year in the Grateful Dead's epic history of live performances.  As such, I've already posted every Spring 1977 soundboard that's available and hasn't been officially released.  Well, today, we begin posting the Dead's Fall/Winter 1977 tour. While the 2nd half of 1977 doesn't get quite the attestation that the forst portion does,  the band continued to deliver exceptional ive shows from September to December.  In fact, the first show of the fall, September 3 at Englishtown (my 1st Dead show!) was officially released as part of the Dick's Picks series. Concerts from November 4, 5 and 6 and December 29 also were officially released, as were portions of shows from October 7, 11, 14 and !6, November 2 and December 30. We've done our best to bring you every soundboard from that year that hasn't been officially released. Here's another, from Seattle on September 28, 1977, 41 years ago today.

America - 1975-09-27 - Paris, France (FM)

In 1974-75, America, with George Martin of Beatles fame as their new producer, found themselves back at the top of the Billboard charts. In 1974, The singles Tin Man and Lonely People went to #4 and #5 respectively on the charts. Then in 1975, Sister Golden Hair became the band’s 2nd #1 single, (Horse with No M=Name had been the first in 1972). This FM broadcast captures America on tour in the wake on that chart success, in Paris on September 27, 1975, 43 years ago today.

On June 30, 2009, U2 launched 360 degrees tour, which encompassed 110 shows over a 2 year stretch. The tour was undertaken in support of the band's then new album, No Line On The Horizon. Why a name for the tour that was different from the album title? U2 decided to name the tour after their unique stage configuration allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. The tour became the highest grossing by any rock band in history, with $736 million in ticket sales  On September 26, 2009, 9 years ago today, the band took a night off from the tour to perform on the first episode of Saturday Night Live's 35th season. The band perfromed 4 songs, but but only the first three were broadcast, as captured in this TV soundboard recording.

Robert Plant - 1999-09-25 - Sheffield, UK (SBD)

In 1999 and 2000, Robert Plant toured with the Priory of Brion, a band that grew out of a reunion between Plant and his old friend, Kevyn Gammond, from the original Band of Joy back in 1966. Plant first reunited with Gammond for a performance for Bewdley tennis club at the end of 1997. Eventually, their collaboration became Priory of Brion, a band whose name the band's name was an amalgam of the Priory of Zion (a mysterious and ancient French secret society) and The Life of Brian (the Monty Python film). The Priory of Brion was dedicated to playing cover versions of songs which had influenced Plant and Gammond in their youth. As such, the set lists are filled with rock classics such as Season of the Witch, Morning Dew, Girl From the North Country, If I Were a Carpenter and Gloria. This soundboard recording captures Plant and the Priory of Brian on September 25, 1999, 19 years ago today, in Sheffield, UK. This is a unique moment in Plant’s post Led Zep history, and a must have for your collection.

On September 23, 2017, just a year ago today, Stevie Wonder headlined the 6th annual Global Citizens Festival, held on the Great Lawn in Central Park in New York City. Over 60,00 people attended the event, whose overriding goal is to end extreme poverty by the year 2030. The festival steered clear for the most part of politics, though Wonder did open the show by taking a Knee for America” in support if Colin Kapernick, whose protests have sparked a flurry of controversy for the NFL. He quickly moved on to the music, however, playing a crowd-pleasing set filled with songs suited for the day’s purpose and messages, such as Higher Ground, Don’t You Worry About a Thing, Living for the City, and Superstition, as captured in this FM Broadcast.

As the 1980s progressed, U2 moved from their new wave/dance roots toward a more serious and complex musical style. The albums War in 1983 and The Unforgettable Fire in 1984 expanded the band’s audience beyond the UK. Their set at Live Aid in 1985 brought them worldwide acclaim and positioned them to headline the 1986 Amnesty International Tour. None of that could have prepared the band or the music world, however, for what transpired in 1987 when they released their 5th album, The Joshua Tree. The album was filled with lyrics and music that, in Rolling Stone’s words, turned “spiritual quests and political struggles into uplifting stadium sing-alongs.” In the US, the disc debuted at #7 on the Billboard charts, then quickly climbed to #1, where it stayed for 9 weeks. The album yielded the band’s first two #1 singles, With or Without You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, as well as its first 2 Grammy Awards. In April 1987, the band became just the 4th act to appear on the cover of Time Magazine, demonstrating that their influence had transcended the music world. This soundboard recording captures U2 on tour in support of their landmark album in Foxboro on September 22, 1987, 31 years ago today.

Bruce Springsteen - 2013-09-21 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (FM) 

On March 5, 2012, Bruce Springsteen released his 17th studio album, entitled Wrecking Ball. The disc would be named Album of The Year by Rolling Stone and go to #1 on the charts in the US UK, and over a dozen other nations around the world. Springsteen went on tour in support of the album just 2 weeks later on March 18, opening with a show in Atlanta. The tour would last 18 months, until September 2013, including 2 legs in North America, 2 in Europe, and 1 each in Australia and South America. This soundboard recording captures Springsteen and The E-Street Band in Rio on the last night of the tour on September 21, 2013, 5 years ago today. The entire tour is noteworthy for being the first without Clarence Clemons, who passed away on June 18, 2011. While no one could fill the Big Man’s shoes, Springsteen made sure his replacement had ties to his long time sax player, tapping Clarence’s nephew Jake for the role.

2000s - #5: In 1989, Jorma Kaukonen established the Fur Peace Ranch in Ohio as music school designed “to grow guitar players, a place where musicians could come together and surround themselves with music for several days and emerge with a new found inspiration.: The ranch also became a site for live concerts, often by Jorma or Hot Tuna, but sometimes featuring some very special guests. This FM broadcast captures one of these guests, the one and only Warren Haynes, on September 20, 2008, a decade ago today. Hot Tuna joins Warren for several songs, making this a collaboration you have to have in your collection.

The Doors - 1968-09-18 - Copenhagen, Denmark (FM)

On September 18, 1968, a half century ago today, The Doors were booked to perform a mini concert for Television-Byen in Copenhagen, Denmark. For a brief moment, whether The Doors would perform that show, or any other show for that matter, was in doubt as a few days earlier, on September 15, Jim Morrison had over dosed after spending a day in Amsterdam, ingesting every drug handed to him by passer-byes as he the rest of The Doors and Thh Jefferson Airplane, who were on tour with them, walked the streets. Later that day, Morrison collapsed on stage during the Airplane's set, and was rushed to a local hospital.  The rest of The Doors played their set, with Ray Manzarek filling in on vocals. Given Morrison's condition, no one was quite sure how the show in Copenhagen would go, but the band was braced for disaster.  Instead, they turned in a remarkable performance, as captured in this soundboard recording. While Jim was clearly tired from his ordeal, starting the concert sitting on a stool, by the end he was on his feet, fully engaged and giving every ounce of strength to the show.

In late 1985, Stevie Nicks released her third solo album, entitled Rock A little.  The disc went to #12 on the Billbaord charts and spawned 3 singles, though only the tune I Can't Wait had much chart success, reaching #16 on the Billboard charts.  In 1986, Nicks went on tour in support of the album, though her li ve performances were hampered by her growing addiction to cocaine. This FM broadcast captures the final night of her US tour, with Peter Frampton making a guest appearance,, on September 16, 1986, 32 years ago today, a show recorded for the Westwood One Superstar Concert Series.

Paul McCartney - 2005-09-15 - Miami, FL (SBD) 

In September 2005, Paul McCartney launched the “US” tour, his 2nd North American tour in 3 years. His 2002 Back in The US tour had been a triumphant return to the stage for Sir Paul, who had been absent from the concert scene for almost 10 years at that time. The US Tour not only continued the momentum from 2002, but also showcased his critically acclaimed album, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. On that album, McCartney played every instrument himself, much like on his debut album, McCartney back in 1970. In addition, at the suggestion of George Martin, Paul employed Nigel Goodrich as his producer. Goodrich was able to do something few would have dared – namely, challenge Sir Paul to be at his best. According to McCartney, "Nigel refused to allow me to sing songs that he didn't like, which was very cheeky of him”. Four tunes from the album – Jenny Wren, English Tea, Follow Me, and Fine Line – all were included in the set list. Of course, that still left plenty of room for a host of earlier solo material, several wonderful anecdotes, and 2 dozen Beatles classics. Grateful Dead - 1978-09-14 - Giza, Egypt (SBD)

On September 2, 1978, I saw the Grateful Dead at Giants Stadium, a good show but hardly the stuff of legends. Perhaps the Dead can be forgiven as no doubt they were looking ahead to their next gig - 3 nights of shows in Giza Egypt at the foot of the Great  Pyramid! The trip was spearheaded by Phil Lesh who said "I was one of the first people in the band who was on the trip of playing at places of power, You know, power that's been preserved from the ancient world. The pyramids are like the obvious number one choice because no matter what anyone thinks they might be, there is definitely some kind of mojo about the pyramids."  Accompanied by a plane load of Deadheads, including folks such as Bill Graham, Ken Kesey and Bill Walton, the leaders of he hippie counter culture tried to tap into the ancient mysticism of Egypt, to try to understand, as Kesey explained "Our relationship to ancient humans. To this place on the planet. To the planet's place in the universe.  All that cosmic stuff is what the Dead are based on."  Nights two and three on the run were officially released on the CD entitled Rockin' the Cradle. This soundboard recording captures night one of that historic and unprecedented long strange trip, on September 14, 1978, 4 decades ago this very day.

Elton John - 1980-09-13 - Central Park, NY (FM) 

As mentioned in earlier posts on this blog, Elton John ended his Louder As A Concorde Tour with 7 shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden in August 1976. He would play only 9 concerts in 1977 and would even announce his retirement at a November 3 show that year. The stress of writing, recording and touring had clearly caught up with Elton. The next time he played New York City would be in October 1979, but it would be a marked contrast to his 1976 shows. Instead of the 20,000 seat MSG, the venue would be the 3000 seat Palladium. Rather than being backed by a full band, Elton was accompanied only by percussionist Ray Cooper. The shows were a return to an earlier, simpler time in his career. When Elton finally did decide to come back to New York with a full band, he did it in a fashion befitting Captain Fantastic. On September 13, 1980, 38 years ago today, he played the Great Lawn in Central Park in front of almost 500,000 people. The show was broadcast on WNEW-FM and taped for a DVD, so plenty of video is available on You-Tube. During his 22 song set, Elton donned several costumes, including dressing up as Donald Duck for the encores. Near the end of the set, he played John Lennon’s Imagine, little knowing at the time that his long time friend would be tragically murdered less than 3 months later. Marshall Tucker Band - 1977-09-12 - Central Park, NY (FM)

The Grateful Dead’s September 3, 1977 show at Englishtown is the stuff of legends, and it has been preserved for all time on Dick’s Picks 15. I was among the 150,000 in attendance that day, making up part of the largest crowd to ever attend a concert in NJ. It was my first Dead show, and will always rank among my favorite concerts. That said, before the Dead even hit the stage, the crowd was treated to some wonderful musical moments courtesy of the Marshall Tucker Band. The MTB, along with the New Riders of The Purple Sage, were the lead-in bands that day, keeping us all entertained and energized as we awaited the main event. Among all the songs played by the 3 bands that day, one of the finest was the MTB’s rendition of Can’t You See. As that song built to a momentous finish, the entire crowd was on its feet cheering. How good was it? Well, the next day, I went album shopping, and in addition to several GD discs, I purchased a copy of MTB’s self titled debut album just to make sure I owned a copy of Can’t You See. While I’ve never come across a recording of the MTB set at Englishtown, I do have this FM broadcast from just 9 days later, on September 12, 1977, 41 years ago today. It’s a short set, but it includes the aforementioned Can’t You See, making it well worth the download.

Eric Clapton - 1998-09-11 - Edmonton, Canada (SBD)

For Eric Clapton, 1998 was the worst of times and the best of times. Early in the year, he released the album Pilgrim, his first disc of original material since 1989’s Journeyman. In producing Pilgrim, Clapton’s goal was to make the “saddest album possible”, in large part to mourn the loss of his son Conor, who had died 7 years before in a tragic accident. Two of the tunes dated back to that tragedy, My Father's Eyes and Circus, the latter of which was about the last time he saw his son, when he took him to the circus. The titles of several other songs on the disc reflected the themes of loss and sadness, such as Broken Hearted, Sick & Tired and River of Tears. Clapton went on tour in the US in support of Pilgrim in March 1998. During that tour, he met and fell in love with Mella McEnery. They were married on January 1, 2002, and now have 3 daughters. In the midst of heartbreak, EC found a new lease on life. The Pilgrim tour continued for the rest of the year,reaching Edmonton on September 11, 1998, 20 years ago today. This show is unique in several respects. First, Eric plays acoustic guitar on 4 numbers, a rarity in concert for him. Second, he’s supported not only by his regular band, but also by a 20 piece orchestra. Finally, the soundboard is so good, that the Geetarz website, which normally rates bootlegs on a scale of 1 (worst) to 6 (best), gave this recording a 7!

In 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp, inspired by some comments Bob Dylan made at Live Aid, founded Farm Aid, a foundation dedicated to supporting the American family farmer. Each year the organization hosts a concert to raise funds, featuring not just the 3 founders but more rock royalty than you could ever imagine - from Dylan to th Dead, from The Who to David Bowie, from Elton John to Billy Joel. from Tom petty to The Pretenders, the list goes on an on (go here for the line up for each year's show).  The Allman Brothers played Farm Aid, twice, on October 4, 1997, and, as captured in this soundboard recording, on September 9, 2007, 11 years ago today.

John Hiatt - 1991-09-08 - Baltimore MD (SBD)

I’m always perplexed how some performers with almost no talent become stars, while others who have incredible song writing and musical abilities never seem to get any recognition. John Hiatt, unfortunately falls in he latter group.  Hiatt is an incredible song writer, with his tunes having been covered by such greats as Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and BB King, just to name a few. Unfortunately for Hiatt, folks often don’t realize he’s the writer of the song, such as when Bonnie Rait released a version of Thing Called Love, which she took to the #11 spot on the Billboard charts in 1989. That song came from his 1987 album Bring The Family, which clearly was his finest work as a musician. Supported by Nick Lowe, Ry Cooder, and Jim Keltner,  Hiatt recorded that disc in a mere 4 days. In addition to Thing Called Love, the album included Memphis In The Meantime, Lipstick Sunset, Thank You Girl, Your Dad Did, Learning How To Love You, Tip Of My Tongue and, perhaps his most popular and touching tune, Have A Little Faith In Me. All of those became integral components of his live shows, as evidenced in this live acoustic set from September 8, 1991, 27 years ago today.
