Los Lobos 2001 - Back To Back - #1: Incredibly in 1998, less than a dozen years after their commercial breakthrough with the album By The Light Of The Moon and their cover of La Bamba, Los Lobos were dropped by Warner records. The band, by the way, had not been resting on their laurels. In 1995, they released the critically acclaimed children's album, Papa's Dream. That same year, Los Lobos won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for the tune Mariachi Suite. Unfortunately, mixed reviews for the album Colossal Head, released in 1996, led to their dismissal by Warner. In 1999, the band signed with Hollywood Records and released the album, This Time, This soundboard recording captures them on tour in support of that disc, in Austin on October 27, 2001, 2 dozen years ago today. Los Lobos - 1997-08-24 - Chicago, IL (SBD)

Jerry Garcia was a huge fan of Los Lobos - in fact, a tape circulates of Jerry and Bob Weir playing with them in the parking lot before a show on July 2, 1989 in Foxboro. You can find video of  that that impromptu performance here. Los Lobos served as the lead in band for the Grateful Dead for several shows in both 1988 and 1989, including the July 9 and 10, 1989 shows at Giants stadium that I attended. They appeared on the 1991 album Deadicated, performing a cover of the Garcia/Hunter tune, Bertha. That tune, as well as West LA Fade Away became staples of Los Lobo’s concert set lists. Los Lobos also frequently played La Bamba > Good Lovin' > La Bamba, with the middle of that sandwich  being a tune the Dead frequently covered. At the legendary September 18, 1987 concert, I saw the Dead play the inverse of the combo, Good Lovin' > La Bamba > Good Lovin, with Garcia on vocals on the Ritchie Valens classic.  I've always suspected that song choice was influenced by Jerry's admiration for Los Lobos!

This soundboard recording captures Los Lobos on August 24, 1997, 28 years ago today, in Chicago. Given our theme this month, its only fitting they end the concert with Bertha!

On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp, inspired by Bob Dylan's pleas at Live Aid to help the family farmer in America, launched Farm Aid intending to do just that! That first festival, which was held at the University of Illinois, attracted 80,000 fans and raised over $9 million. Over the past 4 decades, the effort has raised well over $75 million to help America's family farms while also serving a a key organization to raise awareness of the importance and plight of those farmers. This TV SBD recording captures highlights from Fam Aid 1986, held in Manor, Texas on July 4, 1986, 39 years ago today.  In addition to all the artists who performed live in Texas, the organizers simulcast portions of a concert in Buffalo featuring Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead!

Founded in 1977, the St Gallen Open Air festival is now a 4 day event that drwas a crowd of over 100,000.  Los Lobos took the stage at St. Gallen during its 10th anniversary, on June 27, 1987, 38 years ago today, as captured in this FM broadcast.  Just a few days after that appearance, everything changed for Los Lobos, starting with the release of the movie La Bamba. The movie told the tale of Ritchie Valens rise to stardom and tragic death, along with Buddy Holly, in a plane crash on February 3, 1959. Don McLean. Of course, immortalized that event as “the day the music died” in his classic tune, American Pie. During the movie’s closing credits, Lou Diamond Phillips, who played Valens in the movie, performed La Bamba, along with a then little known band Los Lobos. They would not be unknown for long. On June 30, 1987, their cover of La Bamba was released as a single and went to #1 on the Billboard charts. Then, just a week later, on July 7, Los Lobos released By Light of The Moon, an album of original material, whose theme focused on how and why the American dream eluded so many of the country’s working class. The disc received rave critical reviews, with Rolling Stone, All Music, and Robert Christgau, just to name 3, all singing its praises. Songs such as The Hardest Time, One Time One Night, River of Fools, Tears Of God, and The Mess We’re In, mixed rock, blues, country and tex-mex influences, with rhythms that could get you up dancing and lyrics that reached into your soul. When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange 3 decade trip came to an unexpected end. The members of the band decided, at least temporarily, not to continue to play together out of respect for Jerry. They would change their minds in 1998 and reform as The Other Ones, and later play as the Dead and now as Further. In 1996 and 1997, however, they took a different approach to touring. The Further Festival made the rounds in the summer of those 2 years, a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, kindred spirits Hot Tuna and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures Weir & Ratdog during the first year of the Furthur Festival tour, in Atlanta on June 20, 1996, 29 years ago today.  Weir gets some help from his Furthur Festival touring partners - Bruce Hornsby, Mickey Hart, Jack Casady, Jorma Kaukonen and Los Lobos - on several songs!

Los Lobos 2024 - Back To Back - #1:  In 1973, original members David Hidalgo, Louie Pérez, Cesar Rosas and Conrad Lozano began their career playing revved-up versions of Mexican folk music in restaurants and at parties. In 1984, the group added saxophonist Steve Berlin, released its full-length, major-label debut, How Will the Wolf Survive?, and was named Artist Of The Year by Rolling Stone magazine. Then in 1987, their cover went to #1 on the Billboard charts whil etheir album By Light of The Moon received rave critical reviews, with Rolling Stone, All Music, and Robert Christgau, just to name 3, all singing its praises. While Los Lobos never agian achieved that level of commercial and crtical acclaim, they have remained a constant on the music scene, releasin over a dozen albums and developing a reputation for their outastanding live performances.  The 50th anniverary tour took them to Hawaii for two shows in early 2024.  This soundboard matrix recording capturs night 1, on Janaury 26, 20204, just a year ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Los Lobos 2000 - Back To Back - #1: Incredibly in 1998, less than a dozen years after their commercial breakthrough with the album By The Light Of The Moon and their cover of La Bamba, Los Lobos were dropped by Warner records. The band, by the way, had not been resting on their laurels. In 1995, they released the critically acclaimed children's album, Papa's Dream. That same year, Los Lobos won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for the tune Mariachi Suite. Unfortunately, mixed reviews for the album Colossal Head, released in 1996, led to their dismissal by Warner. In 1999, the band signed with Hollywood Records and released the album, This Time,  This soundboard recording captures them on tour in support of that disc, in Santa Ynez Valley on June 16, 2000, 2 dozen years ago today. 1980s - #2: In the summer of 1987, the movie La Bamba was released, telling the tale of Ritchie Valens rise to stardom and tragic death, along with Buddy Holly, in a plane crash on February 3, 1959. Don McLean. Of course, immortalized that event as “the day the music died” in his classic tune, American Pie. During the movie’s closing credits, Lou Diamond Phillips, who played Valens in the movie, performed La Bamba, along with a then little known band Los Lobos. They would not be unknown for long. On June 30, 1987, their cover of La Bamba was released as a single and went to #1 on the Billboard charts. Then, just a week later, on July 7, Los Lobos released By Light of The Moon, an album of original material, whose theme focused on how and why the American dream eluded so many of the country’s working class. The disc received rave critical reviews, with Rolling Stone, All Music, and Robert Christgau, just to name 3, all singing its praises. Songs such as The Hardest Time; One Time, One Night, River of Fools, Tears Of God, and The Mess We’re In, mixed rock, blues, country and tex-mex influences, with rhythms that could get you up dancing and lyrics that reached into your soul. If you don’t own it, you should. This FM Broadcast captures them about 10 months after their commercial and critical breakthrough, in Tokyo on April 17, 1988, 3 dozen years ago today.
