In the summer of 1992, Jerry Garcia once again fell extremely ill, with a relapse of many of the symptoms that caused him to go into a diabetic coma in 1986. While this episode was not quite as severe, Garcia was still confined to bed rest, and the Dead had to cancel their entire fall tour. Jerry was finally strong enough to resume touring in October. The night he selected for his return was appropriately, Halloween. This soundboard recording captures that triumphant performance from Oakland, CA on October 31, 1992, 21 years ago today. From the heartfelt, How Sweet it Is (To Be Loved by You) which opened the show, to the oh so perfect for Halloween, Werewolves of London, to close the night, this is a memorable concert that is a must have for your collection.

* Ken Kesey gives Eulogy to Bill Graham  

Grateful Dead - 1991-10-31 - Oakland, CA (SBD)

When the Grateful Dead took the stage in Oakland October 31, 1991, 2  decades ago this very day, the band was still reeling from the death of long time promoter and friend Bill Graham. Graham had died in a helicopter crash just 6 days earlier. The Dead would take part in the official celebration of Graham’s life just 3 days later on November. They used their Halloween night performance; however, to pay a personal tribute to the man they called Uncle Bobo. As the Dead began their segue from Dark Star into Drums, Ken Kesey emerged from the shadows in top hat and tails. Kesey, a long time Dead head and friend of Graham, a man who wrote One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, hosted the Acid parties and traveled with the Merry Pranksters in a bus called Further (as chronicled in the Dead tune The Other One), delivered a eulogy for Bill. Part psychedelic, part poetry, part pomp and circumstance, and entirely personal, Kesey’s speech (read it here http://gankmore.com/son.html), set against a jam that sounded like the collision of heaven and hell, sent shivers down the spines of all in attendance. Perhaps fittingly it would be the last time the band ever played on Halloween. Grateful Dead/Bob Dylan Connections

• The Dead, as well as Jerry Garcia in solo shows, made covers of Dylan tunes such as All Along The Watchtower, Stuck Inside of Mobile, Maggie’s Farm, The Mighty Quinn and When I Paint My Masterpiece, just to name a few, staples of their live sets. 
• Robert Hunter, the Dead’s long time lyricist, co-wrote 2 songs on Dylan’s 1988 album, Down in The Groove. 
•  In 1987, Dylan and The Dead played 6 shows together, where the Dead opened with their material, then served as Dylan’s backing band for a closing set. 
• In both 1986 and 1995, Dylan served as the lead in band for several Dead concerts. 
• He also made several guest appearances at their shows, most notable a February 12 1989 show in Los Angeles and a October 17, 1994 performance in New York. 
• Fittingly, when Bob Weir played a concert the same night his brother in music, Garcia, passed away, the song he chose to close the night was Dylan’s Knockin on Heaven’s Door.

Bruce Hornsby - 1993-10-31 - Tampa, FL (SBD)

On Sunday, September 5, 1993, I took my lovely bride to see Bruce Hornsby for the first time. She loves piano, and became a huge fan. I had long enjoyed Hornsby’s music, especially after his stint as keyboardist for the Grateful Dead. The show was everything you could hope for – outdoors at the beautiful Garden State (today PNC Bank) Arts center in Holmdel on a perfect fall evening with Hornsby playing a wonderful mix of solo tunes, Grateful Dead classics, and cover songs. Incredibly, this show seems to have been erased from all memory but mine! If I didn’t have the program from that night, I wouldn’t be able to prove it happened. The website Bruuuce.com, which has an extensive list of Hornsby’s shows and set lists, does not list the September 5, 1993 performance. I actually emailed Bruce himself (you can do that on his website, which just shows you the kind of guy he is) and he responded, saying he remembered the gig but didn’t have the set list or the tapes from it. He must have felt bad for me, because he offered to autograph the program for me so I could give it to my wife as I gift. I was amazed by the offer, and even more so, when 2 weeks after I mailed that precious program to Bruce, an autographed copy came back in the mail. My bride has it proudly framed! In any event, while I may never find a set list or bootleg of that show, I do have this soundboard recording from a few weeks later from Tampa on October 31, 1993, 2 decades ago today. I listen to this one often, along with the one posted a few years ago from Richmond on September 4,  as I’m sure the set list is very similar to the “phantom” show my bride and I attended and is probably the closest I'll get to reliving that night!

• As a member of the Grateful Dead for over 2/12 years, Hornsby played a host of Dylan tunes as part of the Dead’s live concerts.
• After leaving the Dead, many of those tunes, as well as other Dylan classics, found their way into Hornsby’s set lists, including Quinn The Eskimo, It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry, Tangled Up In Blue and Girl From North Country.
• Hornby played piano on Dylan’s 1990 album, Under the Red Sky.

The late, great Bill Graham (see our Grateful Dead post later today for more on him) was not only one of rock’s greatest promoters, but also a man always looking to use the power of rock and roll for social causes. For example, he promoted the SNACK concert on March 23, 1975 and the American portion of Live Aid in JFK Stadium, Philadelphia on July 13, 1985, as well as the 1986 Conspiracy of Hope and 1988 Human Rights Now tours for Amnesty International. In that vein, on October 3, 1986, 27 years ago today, he brought together Santana, Rueben Blades, Baba Olatunji & the Drums of Passion, Run DMC, CSN and The Allman Brothers for the Crack-Down concert. The purpose of the show was to raise money for programs to educate youngsters about the dangers of crack. For the Allmans, it was their first performance together since the band had dissolved in 1982. I was fortunate enough to be in the crowd that night for this amazing reunion, which also featured special guests Paul Butterfield, Mick Taylor, and Buddy Miles, as well as Santana, Stills and Olatunji. Allman Brothers/Bob Dylan Connections

• In recent years, the Allman Brothers have added covers of Dylan’s Blind Willie McTell and Don’t Think Twice Its Alright to their live set lists.
• Of course, one of the Allman’s signature tunes is their cover of Statesboro Blues, which was written by the one and only Blind Willie McTell who is the subject of the Dylan’s tune referenced above.
• The Allmans appeared at Watkins Glen with The Band, who of course, started their career as Dylan’s back up band. 
• Allman Brothers guitarist Derek Trucks was only 12 years old when Dylan invited him on stage to play guitar on Highway 61 Revisited. 
• Perhaps the strangest connection between Dylan and the Allman Brothers is this photo from a 1975 party thrown by Rod Stewart which features, Dylan, Greg Allman and Paul McCartney

We kick off our Halloween celebration - 6 concerts - with a show from this month's featured artist, Bob Dylan. For the former Robert Zimmerman, 1975 was one of the most incredible years in his long storied career. In January, he released Blood On The Tracks, one of his finest albums. Then in June, he released The Basement Tapes, the legendary recordings he and The Band made at Woodstock in 1967. In October, he finished the album Desire, which was released in January, 1976. As if that wasn’t enough, Dylan decided to go on the road in late 1975, launching the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. In addition to the core band he used to produce Desire, Dylan recruited a host of other musicians to join him on this tour. Among those featured in the Revue were Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Mick Ronson, Kinky Friedman, T Bone Burnett, and Bob Neuwirth. At times, other major performers would drop in, such as when Joni Mitchell joined the last 3 nights of the tour. Patti Smith was invited to be part of the Revue, but politely declined. According to Larry Sloman, who documented the tour, "onstage it was like a carnival. After intermission, the curtain rose to an incredible sight, Bob and Joan, together again after all these years. The finale, Woody Guthrie’s 'This Land Is Your Land,' featured everyone on stage from the poet Allen Ginsberg to Bob's mother Beattie one night.” The tour met with tremendous critical acclaim. For example, Clinton Heylin Wrote "The Rolling Thunder Revue shows remain some of the finest music Dylan ever made with a live band." This soundboard recording captures the Rolling Thunder Revue on October 31, 1975, 38 years ago today, in Plymouth. By the way, we have 2 different versions of this show for you to download. Version 1 is more complete, but version 2, despite being shorter, includes a few songs missing from Version 1. Download both and you'll easily see why this concert is another Bob’s Boots must have.

After playing concerts with the Grateful Dead in the summer of 1987, Dylan seemed inspired by their commitment to live performing. Starting the next year, on June 7, 1988, Dylan launched what his fns now call “The Never Ending Tour.” While Dylan isn’t fond of that moniker, he has most certainly been on the road almost every year since 1988, often playing the same cities year after year at just about the same time on the calendar (similar to how the Dead example, would always make their East Coast run after year in September and October. As of August 4, 2013, the Never Ending tour has stretched for 25 years and 2530 concerts! When Dylan played in Tulsa, Oklahoma on October 30, 1991, 22 years ago today, however, it was only concert #348! Download this soundboard recording to hear Dylan just 3 years into his quarter century long journey.

November's Theme At So Many Roads

While we still have 2 packed days of concerts for you left in October (3 tomorrow and 6 on Halloween), I thought I'd take a minute to announce our theme for November. In November, So Many Roads To Ease My Soul will celebrate its 4th Anniversary. To mark that special occasion, our theme for November will be 6 Decades Of Rock & Roll. We'll bring you a concert from every year from 1961 to 2012, celebrating the 1960s, 1970s, 1980's, 1990s, 2000s, & 2010s. All in all, we'll 52 shows representing 45 rock legends.

I've tried my best, given the limitations that shows have to be from November and have great sound quality, to feature the a virtual hall of fame of rock.  Posts will include The Beatles, the Stones, the Who, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Beach Boys, Plant & Page and the list goes on.

In June 1983, some 6 ½ years after the Last Waltz, The Band reunited. Well, at least 4/5 of the original group did, as Robbie Robertson choose to follow his own path. Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Richard Manuel played a series of small clubs in the summer of 1983, then played 6 dates in Japan in late August/early September. When they returned to the US, the reformed group launched a tour of the East Coast, including this how in Buffalo NY on October 28, 1983, 3 decades ago this very day. The Band /Bob Dylan Connections

• Before they were The Band, they were The Hawks, and they served as Dylan’s back up band for his 1966 world tour, his first since he went electric at the 1965 Newport Jazz Festival.
• The famed 1975 Basement Tapes album captures Dylan and The Band recording together in Woodstock (yes - that Woodstock) NY while Dylan was recovering from a motorcycle accident.
• When Dylan returned to touring in 1974, he was backed by The Band for what was, at the time, the most sought after concert ticket in rock history. The live album Before The Flood captures highlights of that tour.
• Dylan was the final performer introduced at The Band’s Last Waltz in November 1976.
• The re-united Band, sans Robbie Robertson who choose not to rejoin his former band mates, and Richard Manuel, who died in 1986, played a cover of When I Paint My Masterpiece at the Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert.
• Both Dylan and The Band each played sets  at Woodstock 1994.

Lou Reed - 1974-10-27 - Dayton, OH (SBD)

RIP Lou Reed - when I decided a week or so ago to post this Lou Reed concert as part of our Bob Dylan connections month, I had no idea that 10/27 would find us mourning the passage of this legend. Just saw moments ago that Lou passed away today, due to complications from a liver transplant. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

In August 1974, Lou Reed released his 4th solo album, entitled Sally Can’t Ride. RCA records launched a massive publicity campaign in support of the album, which despite mediocre critical reviews, rose to #10 on the Billboard charts. It would be the highest charting album of Reed’s career. Reed seemed completely uninterested, however, in the material. He was later quoted as saying “I slept through that LP - whatever they suggested I said yes.... It seems like the less I'm involved with a record, the bigger a hit it becomes. If I weren't on the record at all next time around, it might go to Number One." That indifference did not carry over to his live performances. Those concerts have been described as amphetamine and alcohol fueled assault on the unsuspecting youth of North America. Bob Dylan - 1981-10-27 - Byrne Arena, NJ (HQ Aud)

After touring Europe in the summer of 1981, Bob Dylan returned to the US in the fall for 27 concerts between October 16 and November 21. These shows marked another turning point in Dylan’s career. After 3 years of making and performing evangelical music that reflected his conversion to Christianity, Dylan brought back his older material for this run. The shows were a retrospective of his long career, and an acknowledgement that he couldn’t completely abandon his past. Rolling Stones - 1981-10-26 - Atlanta, GA (SBD)

As mentioned in other posts, soundboards from the Stone’s 1981 tour abound as the band taped every show in anticipation of releasing a live album and a concert film. In fact, perhaps more than any previous tour in rock history to that point, the Stones’ 1981 venture was about maximizing profits. The Stone’s became the first band to have a corporate sponsor for a tour. Jovan paid the band $1 million to advertise on every ticket printed. In addition, the December 18 show in Hampton, Virginia was the first concert ever broadcast on pay per view. Rolling Stones/Bob Dylan Connections

• In October 1969, Greil Marcus wrote a review of an album by a band called the Masked Marauders, which supposedly featured a super group composed of Dylan, the Stones and The Beatles. No such album existed - the article was simply a hoax. Most folks who read the article, however, believed, it and demand for the non-existent album was so strong that an album actually was recorded, using unknown musicians who impersonated the real artists. Inside each album was an article which clued buyers into the joke. 
• Dylan was a huge fan of the Stones at the start of their career, and shared many of the same musical influences as they did, including Chuck berry and Muddy Waters. 
• In 1984, Dylan toured Europe with former Stone Mick Taylor on guitar. 
• At Live Aid in 1985, Dylan was backed by Keith Richards and Ron Wood of the Stones. 
• Dylan, Richards, and Wood appeared in Little Stephen’s video for the song Sun City which was produced to protest apartheid. 
• In 2002, Dylan added Brown Sugar to his concert set lists.

The Beatles - 1963-10-24 - Stockholm, Sweden (FM)

In fall of 1963, Beatlemania was in full swing, as the band's first 2 UK albums, Please Please Me and With The Beatles, had gone to number 1 and stayed there for what seemed like an eternity, 30 weeks and 21 weeks respectively! Their initial single, the title track from their first album, only went to number 2 on the UK charts, but the 2 follow up releases, From Me To You and She Loves You, would both reach the top spot. So would I Want To Hold Your Hand, which would be released in late November 1963. On the heels of that success, the Beatles went on tour in October 1963, and while most of their dates were in their English homeland, they also ventured to Ireland, Scotland and Sweden. This FM broadcast captures their first show in Sweden, on October 24, 1963, 5 decades ago today, from Karlaplans Studios.  Download this one to hear the Beatles just a few short months before their historic performance on the Ed Sullivan show, when they would take America, and the world, by storm.

The Beatles/Bob Dylan Connection

• Bob Dylan introduced The Beatles to smoking marijuana when they met for the first time on August 28, 1964. Dylan was surprised the Fab Four has never smoked. He had misunderstood the lyrics of I Want To Hold your hand, thinking that the line “I can’t hide, I can’t hide” was “I get high, I get high.”
• In the wake of meeting Dylan, John Lennon made a conscious effort to write more introspective songs, with Norwegian Wood being the peak of his efforts to mimic Dylan’s style. 
• The Beatles, Stones and Dylan were all linked as part of the Masked Marauders hoax. 
• George Harrison and Dylan struck up a lifelong friendship, with the two of them playing together in the Traveling Wilburys. 
• Dylan played at Harrison’s Concert For Bangladesh on August 1, 1971 at Madison Square Garden. 
• Harrison played a cover of Absolutely Sweet Marie at the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary concert in 1992. He also backed Dylan on My Back Pages and Knockin on Heaven’s Door. The show was his last ever live performance. 
• Dylan once said of Sir Paul, "I’m in awe of McCartney. He’s about the only one that I am in awe of. He can do it all. And he’s never let up... He’s just so damn effortless."

Neil Young - 1978-10-23 - Inglewood, CA (EX AUD)

July 1979 - I was home from college for the summer between my sophomore and junior years. I was hanging out in the air conditioning at home, trying to stay cool, listening to WNEW-FM. As the clock struck 2 pm, Scott Muni, one of WNEW's legendary DJs, started his customary afternoon shift that day with the following words: "This is the new one from Neil Young". With that, the house shook as the opening notes of Hey Hey, My My (that's the electric version) thundered and snarled from my stereo speakers. Neil's voice filled the room with the anthemic chorus of "rock and roll can never die". Five minutes later it was over, and I was in the car, on the way to Tower Records to purchase the album, Rust Never Sleeps. The disc was an instant classic, its acoustic and electric sides serving as counterpoints to one another, as did the opening My My, Hey Hey and its electric companion sited above. In addition to those 2 tracks, the album featured now legendary tunes such as Thrasher, Pocahontas, Powderfinger, Welfare Mothers and Sedan Delivery. Of course, in typical Neil fashion, he had been playing those songs in concert before he released them. In fact, many of the tunes were recorded live at a 1978 show from the Cow Palace in San Francisco. This high quality audience recording from October 23, 1978, 35 years ago today, is from the day after the official release was recorded. Download this and you'll know why Rust Never Sleeps!

Neil Young/Bob Dylan Connections

• On March 23, 1975, Neil Young and Bob Dylan played a set together, backed by The Band, at the SNACK Benefit Concert organized by Bill Graham. 
• Neil was a guest at The Band’s Last Waltz, as was Dylan. 
• At the Dylan 30th Anniversary concert, Neil played covers of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues and All Along the Watchtower. In between songs, Neil welcomed everyone to “Bobfest”. 
• At the Bob Graham Memorial Concert, Neil sat in with The Grateful Dead to play a cover of Dylan’s Forever Young. 
• In the authorized biography Shakey, when asked by author Jimmy McDonough about Dylan's musical influence, Neil refers to himself as "a 'B student' of Bob Dylan.

Another “must have” performance as recommended by Bob’s Boots, this soundboard recording captures Dylan on October 23, 1998, 15 years ago today, in Minneapolis. Dylan was on tour in support of his 30th studio album, Time Out Of Mind, which had been released in September 1997. The disc was a comeback for Dylan, who had not released any original material in over 7 years. Time Out Of Mind reached #10 on the Billboard charts in the US and won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, Best Contemporary Folk Album and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Download this one to hear Dylan return to prominence on the eve of the 21st century.

Santana - 1969-10-21 - Cincinnati (SBD)

Just about a month after Woodstock, on September 19, 1969, the counter-culture came to Cincinnati with the opening of a new club called the Ludlow Garage. The venue even incorporated pieces of the original Woodstock sound system. The Ludlow actually had been a garage, and patrons who entered the building walked down huge ramps that had once been used to bring cars up from the basement. The club was owned by Jim Tarbell, a former youth counselor who felt the best way to keep kids off the street was to put on a concert! He started in 1967 by holding shows in an abandoned church, but was so successful, that he needed more space. The 10,000 square foot Ludlow Garage, which could hold 1200 people, fit the bill. Though open for less than 2 years, the Ludlow hosted some of the biggest acts of the day, including the Allman Brothers, Elvin Bishop, The Kinks, Humble Pie, Boz Skaggs, Alice Cooper, Grand Funk Railroad and Fairport Convention. As a result, the club earned the reputation as the “Fillmore of the Midwest”. For more on the Ludlow, go here. One of the first acts to play the venue was Santana, on October 21, 1969, 47 years ago today. This soundboard recording captures both the early and late shows -- any of you old enough like me to remember when 2 shows a night was the norm?

• In 1993, Santana and Dylan toured together, each playing about a 90 minute set each night. They alternated each night as to which of them opened and closed the show. 
• Santana was on the bill supporting Dylan at a January 25, 1976 concert to raise money for Ruben “Hurricane” Carter.

Paul Simon - 2006-10-21 - Radio City, NY (SBD) 

On May 9, 2006, Paul Simon released Surprise, his 11th studio album and first since in 6 years, since You’re The One in 2000. The album went to #14 on the Billboard charts, the best any of his discs had performed since Rhythm of The Saints climbed to #4 back in 1990. Simon promoted the album extensively, including TV appearances on Sunday Morning, Good Morning America and Saturday Night Live. In June, he launched the Surprise tour in support of the album, which ran until November and consisted of 27 dates in the US and UK. This concert finds him near the end of the tour, on October 21, 2006, 7 years ago today, at Radio City in New York. When The King took the stage at Notre Dame on October 20, 1976, 37 years ago today, the sold our crowd of 12,000 was treated a much slimmer Elvis, generating hope that the legendary singer was trying to regain his past form. Behind the scenes, however, Presley was dealing with a host of personal drama. He had hired a private investigator to try to prevent his former body guards, Red and Sonny West, from publishing a tell-all book about him. They declined a large cash offer, and just days after this show, The Star published an article entitled “Elvis’ Dramatic Plea To His Ex-Body Guards: Don’t Write This Book About Me.” Elvis was mortified that the issue went public, and fell deeper into a spiral of drug abuse and erratic behavior. Less than a year later, The King would be gone at the age of 42. Download this soundboard recording to hear The King at the time when his private demons became public knowledge.

• Elvis' covered all of the following of Dylan tunes: Don't Think Twice, It's All Right, Blowin' In The Wind, I Shall Be Released and Tomorrow Is A Long Time. 
• According to Rolling Stone, Dylan said that Elvis’ version of Tomorrow Is A Long Time was his favorite cover of any of his songs. 
• Dylan once said of The King: “When I first heard Elvis' voice I just knew that I wasn't going to work for anybody; and nobody was going to be my boss. Hearing him for the first time was like busting out of jail” 
• Dylan mentions The King in 'TV Talkin Song” in the line “Sometimes you gotta do like Elvis did and shoot the damn thing out”, a reference to a real incident when the King fired shots into a TV at his Graceland mansion. 
• According to some sources, Dylan was devastated when Elvis died in 1977. Some say that as a result, Dylan’s 1978 tour had a Las Vegas feel to it as a tribute to the King.

Bob Dylan - 1988-10-19 - Radio City, New York, NY (SBD)

The late 1980s found Bob Dylan collaborating with a host of other rock legends. In 1986, he went on tour with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as his backing band. Then in 1987, he played 6 concerts with the Grateful Dead. In 1998, he found himself in the studio with Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne, working on what was supposed to be a “B side” for a new Harrison song. The song the 5 recorded, Handle With Care, was so good, and the group so enjoyed working together, that the Traveling Wilburys were born. The group recorded an album over 10 days in May, which received rave reviews. Rolling Stone gave it 4 stars while Robert Christgau gave it an A- grade. The disc rose to #3 on the Billboard charts and sold over 2 million copies in 6 months. Bob Dylan was on stage at Radio City Music Hall the when the disc was released on October 18, 1988, a quarter century ago today. Some say that the excitement of the Traveling Wilburys’ release inspired Dylan that night, resulting in one of his best concerts of the year.
