The Kinks entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, the first year they were eligible.  Other members of that class included The Who, Simon & Garfunkel, The Four Tops, The Four Seasons, and Bobbby Darin, just to name a few.

This soundboard recording captures The Kinks at the Rockpalast on April 4, 1982, 44 years ago today, during their 2nd wave of popularity. The band's 1977 album Sleepwalker climbed to #21 on the Billboard chart in the US, with the title track and the tune Juke Box Music becoming staples on FM radio. Around the same time, new wave acts such as The Pretenders and The Jam recorded covers of Stop Your Sobbing and David Watts, bringing the Kink's music to a whole new audience. A cover by Van Halen of You Really Got Me also sparked renewed interest in the Kink's music. Then in 1979, The Kink's released the album Low Budget, which climbed to #11 on the Billboard charts. Their next album Give The People What They want, released in late 1981, went to #15 on the Billboard charts, continuing the band's string of chart success. By the way, The Kinks were on the same bill as Van Morrison, who's Rockpalast appearance we posted earlier today.

The Kinks - 1977-12-24 - London, UK (FM)

In 1976, The Kinks left RCA records to join Arista. With some encouragement from their new label, the band changed artistic direction, relinquishing the theatrics of their previous albums to return to their roots. They eliminated the brass section and back up singers, returning the group to a 5 piece rock band. The new stripped down line up released its first album, Sleepwalker, on February 12, 1977. The disc, which in addition to the title track featured such soon to be Kink's classics as Jukebox Music, Life Goes On, and Life On The Road, went to #21 on the Billboard charts, the band's first commercial success in almost 7 years. This FM broadcast captures the band went on tour in support of the album, in London on December 24, 1977, 47 years ago today.

The album features a change in Ray Davies' songwriting style toward more theatrical, campy and vaudevillian work, as evidenced by the rock-opera concept albums that followed it. The band released Celluloid Heroes as a single, and while it failed to chart, it became a favorite of FM radio stations across the US. The album also marks Davies' first explorations of the trials of rock-star life and the monotony of touring. Given that theme, its ironic that the 2nd disc featured a live show, and maybe even more ironic that the band went on tour in the fall in support of the disc. This soundboard recording captures The Kinks in Binghamton on November 9, 1972, a half century ago today. In February 1973, NBC television launched The Midnight Special, which ran until 1981.  The show was one of a trio of late night shows during that time, the others being In Concert and Don Kirschner's Rock Concert, that featured rock artists performing live. Legendary DJ Wolfman Jack was the announcer fo The Midnight Special, and occaionally also served as the  host.  This episode of the show, recorded on February 14, 1974, 4 dozen years ago tioday, features The Kinks.

AUSTRIA - In May 1978, the Kinks released their sixteenth studio album, entitled Misfits.  The disc  featured a more rock-oriented style than many other Kinks records of the 1970s.  The album reached #40 on the Billboard charts in America, and spawned the hit single, Rock "n" Roll Fantasy, which went to #30 on the charts.  This soundboard and audience recording captures the Kinks on tour in Austria in support of Misfits, on October 22, 1978, 41 years ago today. NOTE: per the info file that came with this show, this is a really unique recording. This is a mixture of Soundboard and Audience. The majority of the songs appear to be soundboard, but then there are sections between the songs and during songs that are clearly audience sourced.
