SPAIN - As promised, here's night 4 of the Guitars Legend Concert from October 18, 1991, 28 years ago today,  Dubbed Folk Night, the show featured Roger McGuinn, Robbie Robertson, Roger Waters and Bruce Hornsby  The FM broadcast captures just part of the show. Interestingly, when I saw Bruce Hornsby in July 2018, he told a story about playing this show, and how it was the first time he had ever heard, let alone played on, Barren Ground by Robbie Robertson and Comfortably Numb by Roger Waters. He noted that he was so inspired by both songs that he not only added them to his concert set lists, but also wrote the tune Fortunate Son to try to mimic the sound and tone of  Comfortably Numb.  And then he played all 3 of those songs!

In 1984, Roger Waters, while in the midst of a power struggle with David Gilmour over the creative direction of Pink Floyd, launched his solo career. It did not get off to a good start to say the least. He released his first solo album, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking on April 30, 1984. The album dealt with the benefits and downsides of monogamy and family life vs. in Water’s words, pursuing the call of the wild. Despite guest appearances by Eric Clapton and David Sanborn, the album flopped. Rolling Stone's Kurt Loder described the disc as a "strangely static, faintly hideous record." Rogers launched a short European Tour in June 1984 in support of the album, then came to North America for about a dozen concerts. Eric Clapton joined Waters for all those 1984 shows. The set list was divided into 2 parts, with the first half consisting of Pink Floyd songs and the second half featuring the The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking album played in its entirety. Pink Floyd released their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, on August 4, 1967. At the time the band consisted of Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright. David Gilmour would not join the group until December 1967, after Barrett was diagnosed with severe mental health issues. Originally a psychedelic band, under Waters and Gilmour’s direction the band would become the leader of the progressive rock movement. Water’s would eventually leave the band in the early 1980s to start a solo career, but Pink Floyd soldiered on until 1995 with Gilmour at the helm. Water’s has continually revisited the Pink Floyd catalog during his solo concerts, especially his masterpiece, The Wall. This soundboard recording from May 2, 1990, 2 dozen years ago today captures Waters in a London studio, rehearsing for a performance of The Wall scheduled to take place in Berlin on July 21 of that year. That show was scheduled to commemorate the fall of The Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989.

On June 2, 2006, at the Rock in Rio Festival, Roger Waters launched the Dark Side of The Moon Live, tour, which would eventually run for 2 years and encompass 119 concerts. The tour was comprised of 7 legs, and visited 5 of the 7 continents, Europe, North America, South America, Australia and Asia, The tour featured elaborate stage design by Mark Fisher, who had been the architect of Pink Floyd's The Wall shows, and included giant puppets, giant video screen displays and a 360° quadraphonic sound system. Each concerted was divided into 2 sets, with the first consisting of a mixture of Pink Floyd classics and Water’s solo material, while the second featured Dark Side of The Moon album in its entirety. The encores featured 5 songs from The Wall. This soundboard captures Waters on Leg 4 of the tour, in Argentina on March 18, 2007, 7 years ago today. 2010 - On September 15, 2010, Roger Waters launched The Wall Live tour, a technological and theatrical marvel that has run for over 3 years and 200 plus shows as of today. At each show, Waters played The Wall album in its entirety, including 2 songs, What Shall We Do Now? and The Last Few Bricks, not included in the original release. The concert featured countless special effects, including building a wall across the stage, then later destroying it; to giant puppets and inflatable balloons, and crashing planes and explosions. Numerous videos are also incorporated throughout the show to further the storyline. While the original story of The Wall was one of isolation and psychological stress, Water’s Wall Live performances stressed anti-war, anti-capitalism and anti-poverty themes. The shows have received tremendous critical acclaim. The Setorian, for example, wrote that “Roger Waters' tour of his seminal album, "The Wall," lavishes in Broadway-esque pomp, but never compromises its music for theatrics. This is a rock concert, one that succeeds in transforming Pink Floyd's brilliant 1979 opus into a compelling aesthetic and auditory experience.” This HQ audience recording captures Waters on November 16, 2010, just 3 years ago today, in Tampa near the start of this ambitious tour. The set list was divided into 2 parts, with the first half consisting of Pink Floyd songs and the second half featuring the The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking album played in its entirety. The North American leg of the tour in early 1985 featured just 10 shows in 6 cities. His record label, CBS, refused to support the tour because they were still holding out hopes, in vain, for another Pink Floyd album. Despite that, the North American shows went far better than their European predecessors. This FM Broadcast from March 25, 1985, 27 years ago today, captures Waters one of those shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
