Released in 1993, the Counting Crows debut album, August & Everything After, went to #4 on the Billboard charts on the strength of such songs as Mr. Jones, Round Here and Rain King. The disc propelled the band to stardom and they spent the next 2 years on the road, touring relentlessly. They didn't go back into the studio to work on their second album until early 1996.  That new disc, entitled Recovering The Satellites, released in October 1996, went to #1 on the Billboard charts, but received mixed reviews from the critics. Rolling Stone found the tunes, which dealt with the challenges of the band's new found fame, to be "deeply satisfying", and felt the band "largely achieved their serious ambitions." The Independent gave the album a far more negative review, calling the songs "self-pitying", and criticizing lead singer and song writer Adam Duritz for his inability "to shut up about himself". This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of the album, in Devore, on September 19, 1997, 27 years ago today.

The 1993 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, the first one not held in New York at the Waldorf Astoria, could be described by borrowing from Charles Dickens - "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. "  On the bright side, all 3 members of Cream - Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce - showed up and played together for the first time since 1968. In addition, the suriving members of The Doors were all present, and played 3 songs with Eddie Vedder on vocals.  On the downside, Van Morrison skipped the ceremony, having Robbie Robertson accept the homor on his behalf, while the Counting Crows were recruited to play Caravan.  Far worse, while all 4 members of Creedence were in attendance for their induction, John Foegerty refused to play with them, continuing the 20 year old feud that effectively destroyed the band.  Instead, he was backed by Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Robertson on 3 CCR tunes.

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on January 12, 1993, 31 years ago today.  A complete list of inductees is provided below.

1999 - Everything about Woodstock 1999 was wrong. Perhaps it should have been a sign of trouble when the event was in July not August, at a site 200 miles away from the original Woodstock, without a single performer from 1969 among the scheduled acts. Instead of 3 days of peace, love and music, the effort to honor the 30th anniversary of the most famous rock festival of them all turned into a horrifying mixture of corporate greed, poor environmental conditions and terrifying violence. Whereas the original Woodstock was famous for the announcement that the the concert had become a free event, the 1999 version featured $150 ticket prices. Personal pizzas were priced at $12 and bottles of water cost $5. The venue lacked sufficient toilets and water, and the grounds became a muddy mess mixed with human waste when fans broke open several pipelines. Violence broke out on the 2nd night during the Limp Bizkit set, and fires erupted on the final night during the Red Hot Chili Peppers performance. Looking to fuel the fires, members of the crowd tore panels of plywood off the perimeter fence. More violence erupted, as many in the crowd broke into ATMs, merchandise trailers, and vendor booths, stealing what they could and setting fire to what remained. Conditions were so bad that MTV pulled out the crew they had covering the event. The National Guard had to be called in and the concert was brought to an end. One of the few positive moments from the show occurred on Saturday, July 24, 1999, 22 years ago today. The Counting Crows performed that day, as captured in this soundboard recording and their set received positive reviews from the crowd and critics alike.
