10,000 Maniacs - 1988-07-31 - London, UK (SBD) 

In July 1987, 10,000 Maniacs released their 2nd album, In My Tribe, which was more pop oriented than than previous work. The disc proved to be their big breakthrough, staying on the Billboard charts for 77 weeks and peaking at No. 37. The album included tracks such as Like The Weather, What's The Matter Here, Hey Jack Kerouac, and a cover of Cat Steven's Peace Train, all of which received extensive play on FM radio and MTv. The album would be certified double platinum early the following year. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of In My Tribe on July 31, 1988, 3 decades ago today.

Jimi Hendrix - 1970-07-30 - Maui, Hawaii (SBD)

In April 1970, Jimi Hendrix launched his Cry of Love Tour, which would turn out, unfortunately, to be the last one he undertook. He was accompanied by Billy Cox on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums, and the trio was often billed as the Jimi Hendrix Experience, even though only 2 of the 3 original members, Hendrix and Mitchell, were present as Cox had replaced Noel Redding. Hendrix went on tour, in part, to earn money to repay Warner Bros for a loan they made to him to help build his Electric Lady Studios in New York. He was also anxious to test out new material he had been recording for a forthcoming album, tentatively entitled, First Rays Of The New Rising Sun. His set list would include, therefore, such new songs as Hey Baby, Lover Man, Freedom, Dolly Dagger and Ezy Ryder, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures Jimi in Hawaii on July 30, 1970, 4 dozen years ago today. Jimi played 2 shows that day, both at the Maui Halakeala Crater in Hawaii, an incredible setting for what turned out to be the next to last time he would play in the US (the last US show would be on August 1 in Honolulu). Download this one to hear Jimi less than 2 months before his tragic death on September 18, 1970.

Grateful Dead - 1974-07-29 - Landover, MD (SBD)

In 1974, the Dead rolled out the Wall of Sound, an enormous concert speaker system designed to be distortion-free while serving as its own monitoring system. The Wall of Sound was the largest sound system developed up to that point with over 600 speakers that could unleash a total of 26,400 watts of audio power. Four tractor trailers and 21 crew members were required to haul and set up the 75-ton Wall. With the Wall Of Sound at their back, the Dead played several shows in 1974 that rank among their best ever, including July 31 at Dillon Stadium and August 6 at Roosevelt Stadium (both officially released), as well as June 23 in Miami. In addition, the Grateful Dead played their 5 “retirement” shows at Winterland in October 1974, immortalized in the Grateful Dead movie, though the band eventually would return to touring in 1976.  This  soundboard from July 29, 1974, 44 years ago today, captures the Dead just 3 months before what fortunately turned out to be just a brief time away from the stage.

Marshall Crenshaw - 1991-07-27 - Santa Cruz, CA (VG Aud)

Marshall Crenshaw - Double Play 1991 - #2: As long time readers of So Many Roads Know, one of my favorite musicians is Marshall Crenshaw. Crenshaw is so under rated that he makes John Hiatt, whose lack of attention I have frequently mourned, look like Mr Popularity. Crenshaw was born in Detroit, MI but got his big break in New York, when he played John Lennon in the off Broadway production, Beatlemania. While in New York, he recorded Someday, Someway, a song that Robert Gordon covered and took to #76 on the Billboard charts in 1981. Crenshaw released his version the next year, which went to #36 in the charts, his only top 40 single. Crenshaw’s first 2 albums are must owns for every rock fan. Famed critic Robert Christgau summed those 2 discs up in one simple word - PERFECT. This very good audience recording captures Crensgaw on July 27, 1991, 27 years ago today. It’s not quite up to the quality standards we like to adhere to at So Many Roads, but there are so few Crenshaw recordings out there, I decided to make an exception. Just don’t want anyone to be surprised when they listen, so consider this full disclosure!

The year 1980 was marked by one memorable moment after another for Jerry Garcia, both with the Grateful dead and while out on his own.  The Dead celebrated their 15th anniversary in 1980, and rose to the occasion by delivering countless memorable performances - a spring East Coast tour that spawned the official release of 4 shows, 3 shows in Alaska, September run that saw the release of the 9/2, 9/3 and 9/4 shows plus a concert on 9/6 in Maine that just might have been the concert of the year, and finally the run of shows at the Warfield Theatre, Saenger Center and Radio City Music Hall that featured an acoustic set and 2 electric sets each night.  The Jerry Garcia Band also had its share of highlights in 1980, especially the February/March tour that saw the release of the February 28 and March 1 shows. This soundboard recording captures the JGB a little later in the year, in Asbury Park, NJ on July 26, 1980, 38 years ago today. While it may not be quite as hot as the Winter shows, the performance still finds Jerry in fine form.

Steely Dan - 2007-07-25 - Bonn, Germany (SBD)

At one point in their career, Steely Dan, went almost two decades without touring, from 1974 to 1993, in order to focus on studio material.  Once they did return to the road, however, they seemed to want to make uo for liost time,  After tours in 1993 and 1996, Steely Dan lauched the 21st century by taking to the road in 2000, They then also toured in 2003, and then every year from 2006 to 2017. In fact, despite the death of  Walter Becker in 2017, Steely Dan, led only by Donald Fagan at this point, will be on the road again in 2018. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. In any event, soundboard recording captures Steely Dan during the Heavy Rollers tour fin Bonn on July 25, 2007, 11 years ago today.

The Paul McCartney World Tour, which launched on September 26, 1989, quickly lived up to its name. After a run of shows in Europe, Paul then flew to North America for a series of shows in November and December in Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal and New York. Then it was back to England for 17 shows in January in Birmingham and London. He returned to the US in February, only to fly to Tokyo in March for 6 shows. He was back in the US in late March, then made  to the US for a stops in Scotland, England and Brazil.  He returned to the US for a 4th time in July for another series of shows. This soundboard and HQ Audience recording captures Sir Paul in Foxboro, MA on July 24, 1990, 28 years ago today.

The Band - 1983-07-23 - San Jose, CA (Aud)

Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976. The Last Waltz. A concert, an album, a movie, an event, an ending. The last performance by The Band. For 7 years, it really did appear as if The Band truly had left the stage for good. Then in 1983, 4 of the 5 original members - Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Levon Helm - decided to again perform together. While Robbie Robertson remained apart from his former mates, The Band was back. According to the notes that accompanied this show, it was at this concert, on July 23, 1983, 35 years ago today, where The Band reunited for their first live performance since the Last Waltz. The site was a small bar that held less than 400 people called the Saddlerack in San Jose, CA. This is an audience recording, and while the quality is below what I usually like to post at So Many Roads, this show has such historic value, I had to share it with you. Listening to the tape, there's something about the sound quality that will make you almost feel as if you are at the show, having a beer, chatting with other patrons, and being amazed that one of rock's legendary acts had just reformed before your very eyes!

Fats Domino  - 1993-07-22 - Antibes, France (FM)

He was a a member of the inaugural class voted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986,  alongside such legends as Elvis Presley, Check Berry, Buddy Holly, James brown, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, The Verly Brothers, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis.  He had 11 top 10 singles in the 1950s/60s including Ain't That A Shame (#10), I'm In Love Again (#3), Blueberry Hill (#2), I'm Walkin (#4), Blue Monday (#5), Valley Of Tears (#8), It's You I Love (#6), Whole Lotta Loving (#6), I Want to Walk You Home (#8), Be My Guest (#8) and Walking to New Orleans (#6).  He was an influence on the biggest names in rock, including Elvis, John Lennon and Paul McCartney.  He is the one and only Antoine "Fats" Domino, whose melding of R&B, New Orleans sounds, boogie woogie and rock & roll made him one of the musical legends of the 20th century.  This FM broadcast, captures him late in his career, on one of his last tours outside the US, in France on July 22, 1993, 25 years ago today.

Eric Clapton - 1974-07-21 - San Francisco CA (SBD)

The year 1974 marked EC's triumphant return to the top of the rock world. After playing at the Rainbow Concert in January 1973, Clapton worked to kick his heroin addiction and finally was united with long time love Patti Boyd, who had been the inspiration for Layla. He recorded the album 461 Ocean Blvd in the spring of 1974. The disc would go to #1 on the Billboard charts after its release, as would the single from the disc, I Shot The Sheriff. EC went on the road in support of the album in June 1974, his first tour since 1970. Throughout this tour, Clapton would often sound a bit sloshed, as a new demon had replaced his addiction to heroin, namely a growing dependency on alcohol. This soundboard recording captures EC during that comeback tour, in San Francisco on July 21, 1974, 44 years ago today.

The Ramones - 1982-07-20 - Roslyn, NY (FM)

They were the pioneers of punk rock, the resident house band at the legendary New York club CBGB, with long hair and leather jackets, counting off 1 2,3,4 then launching into 2 minute songs that were a wall of noise, rebelling against the excesses that plagued rock and roll in the mid 1970s. They were the Ramones, and, in the words of Trouser Press magazine,“With just four chords and one manic tempo”, they “blasted open the clogged arteries of mid-'70s rock, reanimating the music.” Interestingly, the punk rock sound of the Ramones had its roots in the pop music of the 1960s. The band cited the music of The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Kinks and Rolling Stones, as well as girl groups such as The Ronettes and The Shangri-Las, as key influences. Perhaps then, it’s not surprising that the band agreed to let Phil Spector, who, of course, had worked with both The Beatles and The Ronettes, produce their 1980’s album, End Of The Century. The disc clearly had more of a pop than a punk sound, which sparked controversy with both the band and its fans. That said, it became the Ramone’s highest charting album reaching #44 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbing to # 14 in the UK. Moreover, the band quickly incorporated tunes from the disc into their live shows, as captured in this FM broadcast from My Father's Place on from July 20, 1982, 38 years ago today. In 1994, The Stones released the album Voodoo Lounge, their first album since Steel Wheels, 5 years earlier. It was also their first album on Virgin Records, and the first without Bill Wyman. Voodoo Lounge met with critical acclaim, as many writers called it a return to the glory days of Exile on Main Street and Some Girls. The disc rose to #2 on the charts in the US and won the Grammy for best rock album. This soundboard recording captures the band near the end of their year long tour in support of Voodoo Lounge in London on July 19, 1995, 23 years ago today.

In 1997, 10 years after he released his breakthrough disc Bring The Family, John Hatt released the album, Little Head.  Unfortunately, Little Head was the complete opposite of Bring The Family - both a commercial and a critical flop.  That didn't stop Hiatt from going on the road in support of the album. As legend goes, Steve Winwood reformed Traffic in 1994 after a Dead Head left a message for Bob Weir suggesting that if would be “cool” if The Dead and Traffic toured together! I’m not quite sure how true that is, but Traffic did come back together in 1994, and they were the lead-in band for the Grateful Dead’s summer tour! This soundboard recording cpatures Traffic during that summer tour in Washington Dc on July 17, 1994, 20 years ago today.

Lou Reed - 1986-07-16 - New York, NY (FM)

In  June 1986, Lou Reed released Mistrial on RCA Records, his fourteenth solo album. The album went to #47 on the Billboard chart in the US, and reached #69 on the UK charts. The disc featured the single No Money Down, which, as was typical at the time, was accompanied by a music video. That video featured an animatronic Lou Reed, which you can see for yourself here. No sure that makes you want your MTv.  In any event, this FM broadcast captures Lou on tour in support of Mistrial at The Ritz in New York City on July 16, 1986, 32 years ago today,

Led Zeppelin - 1973-07-15 - Buffalo, NY (SBD)

Led Zeppelin launched a North American tour on May 4, 1973, about a month after the release of the band’s 5th album, Houses of The Holy, which had gone to the top of the charts in both the US and UK. Led Zep would play outdoor stadiums for the first time on this run, including a show in Tampa on the 2nd night of the tour that drew 56,800 fans, breaking the attendance record set by The Beatles at Shea Stadium in 1965. The shows also incorporated more theatrics and special effects, including dry ice, lasers, backdrop mirrors, hanging mirror balls and pyrotechnics. The last 3 shows of the tour at Madison Square Garden, were filmed and taped for use in compiling the band’s first concert movie and its accompanying live album soundtrack, both entitled The Song Remains The Same, which would be released in 1976. This soundboard recording captures the band during that historic tour,  in Buffalo on July 15, 1973, 45 years ago today.

In June 1976, Jefferson Starship released their 3rd album Spitfire, the follow up disc to their chart toping 1975 album Red octopus. Spitfire would eventually spend 6 weeks at #3 on the Billboard charts, but would not produce a hit single comparable to Miracles from Red Octopus. This FM broadcast captures the band on tour in support of Spitfire in Hartford on July 14, 1976, 42 years ago today.

Bob Dylan - 1986-07-13 - Saratoga Springs (SBD)

Believe it or not, the 1986 Dylan/Petty tour was an outgrowth of two major concert events – Live Aid and Farm Aid. At the end of his set at Live Aid, Dylan said "I hope that some of the money…maybe they can just take a little bit of it, maybe…one or two million, maybe…and use it, say, to pay the mortgages on some of the farms and, the farmers here, owe to the banks…". While that comment angered Live Aid organizer Bob Geldorf, it did help spark the effort to organize Farm Aid. The first Farm Aid show was held just 2 months after Live Aid, on September 22, 1985. Both Dylan and Petty played at that show and struck up a mutual friendship. That led to Dylan inviting Petty and the Heartbreakers to serve as his back up band for his 1986/1987 True Confessions tour. The Dylan/Petty collaboration would later continue in the Traveling Wilburys. This soundboard, from July 13, 1986, 32 years ago today, captures Dylan and Petty at Saratoga Springs in NY. Dylan plays an eclectic selection of tunes, and Petty and The Heartbreakers get to step out front for 8 songs.

Similar to Back on Top, Down The Road features blues and R&B music, reflecting some of Van’s earliest influences. Early in 2010, Neil Young flew to Los Angeles, CA to begin work on his 33rd studio album. Neil brought in Daniel Lanois to produce the disc, which resulted in calling the album Le Noise, a pun on the producer’s last name. The disc featured Neil solo, on both acoustic and electric guitar. Le Noise was released in September 2010, climbing to number 14 on the Billboard charts while receiving positive reviews from Rolling Stone, Blare Magazine, and The Guardian, just to name 3. On May 18, 2010, even before the album hit stores, Neil went on tour playing tunes from Le Noise, such as Walk With Me and Sign Of Love, alongside classics like My My, Hey Hey and Cinnamon Girl. This soundboard recording captures Neil on July 11, 2010, 8 years ago today, at the first of 3 nights at the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA.

In the late 1970’s, Santana’s music began to move away from the traditional fusion of Latin, jazz, rock and blues toward a more album oriented rock (AOR) sound. That transition began with the album Inner Secrets in 1978, and continued on with Marathon in 1979 and Zeebop in 1981. While those albums produced some outstanding tracks, including, Stormy, Open Invitation, All I Ever Wanted and Winning, Santana’s core fan base questioned the band’s direction. One thing which did not change during this period, however, was the band’s ability to play dynamic live concerts. As this soundboard from Tokyo from July 11, 1983, 35 years ago today, demonstrates, Carlos could still play guitar with the best of them and the band could electrify any concert venue

On June 30, 2009, U2 launched 360 Degrees tour, which encompassed 110 shows over a 2 year stretch. The tour was undertaken in support of the band's then new album, No Line On The Horizon. Why a name for the tour that was different from the album title? U2 decided to name the tour after their unique stage configuration allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. The tour became the highest grossing by any rock band in history, with $736 million in ticket sales. The set list for the 2011 portion of the tour featured more songs from Actung Baby, to mark the 20th anniversary of that album. In October 1999, Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes teamed up for 6 shows, 3 in New York City. 1 in Worcester, MA and 2 in Los Angeles. Each night's set list featured a mix of Led Zep and Black Crowes tunes. The LA shows yield a live album entitled, Live At The Greek. Unfortunately, due to contractual issues, the album could not include any Black Crowes material. The October shows were so successful that Page and the Crowes went on tour together from June to October 2000. This soundboard recording captures them on July 8, 2000, 18 years ago today, in Camden, NY.
