Bruce Hornsby - 1990-08-02 - Seattle WA (SBD)

Bruce Hornsby is one of those rare artists I've seen as a lead in performer, a solo headliner, and as part of a group. In May 1987, I saw him lead in for the Grateful Dead at Leguna Seca, the only Dead show I attended on the West Coast. Then, between 1993 and 2018, my wife and I saw Bruce as the headliner on 6 different occasions, some shows solo, some with the Range, and some with the Nosiemakers. Then after 5 years without seeing Mr. Hornsby, we went to 2 of his shows in 2023, a solo performance in March and a concert with the Noisemakers in June! That makes Hornsby just 1 of 7 artists - the others are the Grateful Dead, Paul McCartney, The Band, Los Lobos, Joe Jackson and Bruce Springsteen - that I have seen 2 or more times in the same year. On top of that, we saw him 9 times as a member of the Grateful Dead in 1990 and 1991 combined! By the way, if you like keeping track of those kind of statistics releated to the concerts you have attended, my book has a chapter filled with them that I'm sure you will enjoy.

This post goes back to Hornsby's final days with the Range. In July 1990, released his last album with them, entitled A Night On The Town. The disc went to #20 on the Billboard charts, and featured contributions from Jerry Garcia on Barren Ground and Across The River. Hornsby went on tour in support of the album, including this show, captured in a soundboard recording, in Seattle, on July 20, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today. A little over a  month later, on Septeber 15, 1990, Hornsby would join Garcia as part of the Grateful Dead in the wake of keyboardist Brent Mydland’s death due to a drug overdose. Hornsby, would stay with the Dead full time until March 24, 1992, when he left to restart his solo career.

Hiatt 1990 - Back To Back - #1:As mentioned in other posts on this blog, I think John Hiatt is one of rock’s most under rated and overlooked talents. His run of albums between 1987 and 1995 - Bring The Family, Slow Turning, Stolen Moments, Perfectly Good Guitar and Walk On - are filled with exceptional tunes. Many of those songs have been covered by artists such as Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffet and Joe Cocker. Unfortunately, Hiatt never achieved the commercial success he deserved.  This sounsboard recording captures him on tour in support of Stolent Moments, during the late show at the Bottom Line on July 26, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

Dave Edmunds Rock 'N' Roll Revue - 1990-03-13 - Springfield, MA (Ex Aud)

1990s - #4: In 1989, Ringo Starr launched his first All-Starr Band, gathering a group of fellow musicians for a series of concerts, which featured songs from the Beatles, Ringo's solo career, and each of the individual group members repertoire. The All-Starr tour received such a positive response that Dave Edmunds decided he would try something similar the following year. Edmunds joined forces with Dion, Graham Parker, Kim Wilson (of the Fabulous Thunderbirds) and Steve Cropper, to create the Rock 'N' Roll Revue. Ironically, Edmunds' old Rockpile band mate, Nick Lowe, wasn't part of the show. This excellent audience recording (from the Two of Us masters series) captures the Roll "N" Roll Revue in Springfield on March 13, 1990, 3 doazen years ago today.

1990s - #1: On March 4, 1990, David Bowie embarked on his Sound & Vision tour,  a run of shows built upon an unusual premise. The set list for the tour would feature a host of his greatest hits, which Bowie would then retire from all future concert performances. For fans, it would supposedly be their last opportunity to hear classics such as Suffragette City, Ziggy Stardust, Rebel Rebel and Changes, just to name a few, in concert. Fortunately, Bowie didn’t completely abandon his old material in future tours, but at the time no one was quite certain how serious he was about the claim. This soundboard recording captures Bowie on  the 2nd night of the tour, in Montreal, on March 6, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today.

Stones 1990 - Back To Back - #1: On August 29, 1989, the Rolling Stones released the album Steel Wheels, their first disc in 3 years. Two days later, they launched a US tour in support of the album, their first live concerts in the US since 1981, a stretch of 8 years. During that time, stories had abounded that the tensions between Jagger and Richards might lead to the end to the band. So, fans were relieved that the Glimmer Twins had resolved their issues and fired up that the Stones were returning to the stage. The album went to #3 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbed one spot higher than that in the UK. In addition, The tour was a massive financial success. After completing their North American run in late 1989, the Stones took the tour to Japan in early 1990. 1990s - #2: During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the Ratdog Revue. They played their first show as Ratdog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day, Weir continued with Ratdog after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 years, though recently he has spent time on other projects such as the Campfire Band and the Wolf Bros. This soundboard recording captures Weir and Wasserman, in Maui on January 10, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today.  NOTE:  Just hours after I posted this Bob passed away.  A sad, sad day. May he rest in peace.

The Band - 1990-12-05 - Lone Star Roadhouse, New York, NY (late) (SBD) 

I saw The Band live just twice, both times in 1985. The first concert, in August at Pier 84 in New York, they were the lead in for CSN. The 2nd show, in October, they headlined at one of their favorite venues, the Lone Star Cafe.  By the way, The Band is in a select group of just 8 artists that I saw twice in the same year, with the other 7 being the Grateful Dead, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Bruce Hornsby, Joe Jackson, Robert Cray, and Los Lobos.  If you like statisrtics like that, you'll find a whole chapter of them in my book.

This soundboard recording captures The Band on Deecember 5, 1990, 35 years ago today, at the Lone Star Roadhouse in New York. After the Lone Star Cafe closed, the owners opened a new venue, called the Lone Star Roadhouse, and The Band followed!

The links between Santana and Jerry Garcia/the Grateful Dead go back to the 1960s, when both bands emerged from the San Francisco music scene. In fact, Carlo has said that seeing the Dead pull up in a limousine to the restaurant where he was washing dishers inspired him to pursue his musical dreams.  Moreover, some sources claim that once Santana macde that decison, Garcia helped mentor him.  In addition, the 2 bands would often share the bill together, such as at a New Year’s Eve 1968 show at Winterland or a jam session along with the Jefferson Airplane in February 1970 at the Family Dog. Both bands, of course, appeared at Woodstock in 1969. In the late 1980s and early 1990s. Santana served as the Dead’s lead in band for numerous shows. On several occasions, Carlos joined the Dead on stage for a few numbers. Bill Graham would play a major role in promoting shows by both Santana and The Grateful Dead throughout both bands’ long storied careers. It's no surprise then that both Santana and The Dead played at the concert in Graham’s honor in November 1991 after the fabled promoters tragic death.

The Silver Clef Award Winners Concert  - 1990-06-30 - Knebworth, UK (SBD)

Knebworth House in England, an estate from the 15th century, has been the site of major rock festivals since 1974 (go here for more info) when the Allman Brothers drew a crowd of 60,000.  In 1979, Led Zeppelin made their return two live performing with 2 concerts at Knebworth. The Rolling Stones, Queen, Genesis and Van Morrison, as well as dozens of other rock acts, also have graced the stage at Knebworth. On June 30, 1990, 35 years ago today, Knebworth hosted the Silver Clef Awards for outstanding contributions to music in the UK, resulting in an incredible star studded line up, including Eric Clapton, Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, Jimmie Page and Sir Paul McCartney. The concert was so big that it was broadcast on the radio world wide. WNEW-FM in NY carried the broadcast, and I filled several Maxell tapes with the historic performances from that show. Of course, then CD's happened, and the tapes sat in a box, as did my 2 Nakamichi tape players! Fortunately, thanks to the digital age, we now have the full FM broadcast of that historic show.

Edmunds 1990 - Back To Back - #1: In 1989, Ringo Starr launched his first All-Starr Band, gathering a group of fellow musicians for a series of concerts, which featured songs from the Beatles, Ringo's solo career, and each of the individual group members repertoire. The All-Starr tour received such a positive response that Dave Edmunds decided he would try something similar the following year. Edmunds joined forces with Dion, Graham Parker, Kim Wilson (of the Fabulous Thunderbirds) and Steve Cropper, to create the Rock 'N' Roll Revue. Ironically, Edmunds' old Rockpile band mate, Nick Lowe, wasn't part of the show. This excellent audience recording (from the Two of Us masters series) night one of the Roll "N" Roll Revue concert at the Ritz in New York, on March 15, 1990, 35 years ago today. On August 29, 1989, the Rolling Stones released the album Steel Wheels, their first disc in 3 years. Two days later, they launched a US tour in support of the album, their first live concerts in the US since 1981, a stretch of 8 years. During that time, stories had abounded that the tensions between Jagger and Richards might lead to the end to the band. So, fans were relieved that the Glimmer Twins had resolved their issues and fired up that the Stones were returning to the stage. The album went to #3 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbed one spot higher than that in the UK. In addition, The tour was a massive financial success. After completing their North American run in late 1989, the Stones took the tour to Japan in early 1990.  This soundboard recording captures them in Tokyo, on February 24, 1990, 35 years ago today.
