1991: As the decade of the 1980s became the 1990s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg's tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Greg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. This TV soundboard recording captures the band in Mansfield on September 6, 1991, 35 years ago today.

Bob Weir - 1991-08-31 - Pasadena, CA (SBD)

While I went to 50 Grateful Dead concerts, I only saw Bob Weir solo once, in July 1992, as mentioned in our Bruce Cockburn post earlier this month.  That show was at the Meadowlands Summer Fest, which turned out to be a stage and seats set up in the parking lot at Giants Stadium. Oh the things promoter John Scher did to run a concert and make a bucks - you'll find even more in my book.

This soundboard recording captures Weir about a year earlier, in Pasadena on August 31, 1991, 35 years ago today.  Weir was accompanied by Rob Wasserman.  The two started working together in the late 1980s as a duo, and then formed the core of Ratdog, which in 1995, played their first show on August 8, 1995, the night before Jerry Garcia passed away.

Grateful Dead - 1991-08-16 - Mountain View, CA (SBD)

On September 3, 1977, me and my buddies, along with 150,000 others, made the pilgrimage to Englishtown NJ, to see the Grateful Dead play the largest concert in the state's history. The day was hot - over 100 degrees - and the band was even hotter., as evidenced by the fact the show was officailly released as Dick's Picks #15.  I would see 49 more after that, at least 1 show every year except 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1992, with the last show being June 18, 1995, just 2 month's before we lost Jerry Garcia. My long strange trip with the Dead was short compared to folks who saw hundreds of concerts, but it was memorable, as over a dozen shows that I attended were good enough to be officially released. It's been 31 years since we lost Jerry, and I still miss the magic. 

As mentioned in several posts here at So Many Roads, the period from 1989 to 1991 featured the band’s finest playing in the wake of Jerry’s recovery from a diabetic coma in late 1986. To underscore that point, here’s a list of just some of the shows from that period that the Dead have officially released:

• a show from Philadelphia from July 7, 1989
• the Giant Stadium Shows from July 9 and 10, 1989
• The 2 night stand at RFK Stadium from July 12 and 13, 1989
• the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989

Neil Young - 1991-02-16 - Buffalo, NY (SBD) 

Neil 1991 - Back To Back - #1:  In late 1990, Neil Young released his 20th studio album, and 6th back by Crazy Horse, entitled Ragged Glory. The album's garage rock sound earned Neil the honorary title of "Godfather of Grunge".  The disc went to #31 on the Billboard Charts and earned outstanding critcal reviews. Kurt Loder, for example, called the album a "great one", which was a "a monument to the spirit of the garage - to the pursuit of passion over precision".  In addition, the Village Voice ranked it as the album of the year in its annual poll.  In early 1991, Neil and the Horse went on tour in support of Ragged Glory.  This soundboard recording captures them in Buffalo on February 16, 1991, 35 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set

1990s - #2: In July 1991, Crowded House released their 3rd studio album entitled Woodface. The disc became the band's first top 10 album in the UK, climbing to #6 on the British charts, however, it only reached #83 on the Billboard charts in the US. The disc featured the tune Weather With You, which was a big hit throughout the world except in the US, where it failed to chart. That said, Jimmy Buffett liked it so much he often covered it in concert. In any event, this soundboard recording FM Broadcast captures Crowded House on tour in support of Woodface in London on November 9, 1991, 34 years ago today.

As discussed yesterday, Bob Weir played twice at Farm Aid as a member of the Grateful Dead, with both appearances being simulcasts.  Weir actually showed up live for Farm Aid in 2023, playing a set backed by the Wolf Brothers.

This soundboard recording captures Weir backed by Rob Wasserman at The Ritz in New York City on September 28, 1991, 34 years ago today. Weir and Wasserman started working together in the late 1980s as a duo, and then formed the core of Ratdog, which in 1995, played their first show on August 8, 1995, the night before Jerry Garcia passed away.

Jerry Garcia - 1991-08-25 - Squaw Valley CA (SBD)

Today we bring you another Jerry Garcia show that highlights one of the numerous partnerships that highlighted his carrer outside of the Grateful Dead.  This soundboard recording from Squaw Valley on  August 25, 1991, 34 years ago this very day, finds him playing acoustic with long time friend and musical collaborator, David Grisman. Their relationship went all the way back to 1964, when they met in San Francisco. Grisman would play on the Grateful Dead album, American Beauty, and in the 1970s, be part of Garcia's Old and In The Way and Great American String Band projects. In the 1990s, the 2 collaborated in earnest, playing live on around 20 occasions, and recording 7 albums together. Garcia nicknamed Grisman, Dawg, after a dog that was following him while they were driving around in California.

Its ironic, to say the least, the the notoriously grumpy, private, and unpredicatble Van Morrison seems to love to play outdoor festivals in front of thousands of happy concert goers. This FM broadcast captures him at Blues Peer on July 21, 1991, 34 years ago today.  Van was on tour in support of his 20th studio album, entitled Enlightenment, which had been rleased in October 1990.  The disc went to #62 on the Billboard Album Charts in the US, and climbed all the way to #5 on the British charts. Reviews were strong with Rolling Stone rating the album 4 stars and Robert Christgau giving it a B+.

The Telluride Mid Summer Music Festival (not to be confused with Telluride Blue Grass Festival) was a one time event promted by Bill Graham that ran from July 19-21, 1991, on of the last major event she ran prior to his death in Octiber that year. The  festival was headlined by Jackson Browne on Friday, Joe Cocker on Saturday and the Allman Brothers on Sunday. Roger McGuinn - 1991-04-08 - Philadelphia PA (SBD)

1990s - #2: In January 1991, Roger McGuinn released his 6th solo studio album, Back from Rio. Over a decade had passed since McGuinn's previous solo album Thunderbyrd. Back to Rio was issued following the release of the Byrds box set and musically it leans on the sound of McGuinn's former band, thanks to his 12-string electric guitar and vocal contributions from ex-Byrds David Crosby and Chris Hillman. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers also made significant contributions to the disc. Petty co-authored and sang with McGuinn on the album's lead single King Of The Hill, while members of the Heartbreakers provided musical backing on a number of tracks. Other prominent songwriters on the album are Elvis Costello, Jules Shear, and Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. The album was generally well received by music critics and it peaked at #44 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The superstar quartet recorded 3 albums together between 1985 and 1995: Highwaymen in 1985, Highwaymen 2 in 1990 and The Road Goes On Forever in 1995. This soundboard recording captures them in Las Vegas, taping a televison special in support of their 2nd disc, on December 10, 1991, 33 years ago today.

1991: During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the Ratdog Revue. They played their first show as Ratdog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day, Weir continued with Ratdog after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 years, though recently he has spent time on other projects such as the Dead & Company, Campfire Band and the Wolf Bros. This soundboard recording captures Weir & Wassermann in their early days, on November 16, 1991, 33 years ago today, in Santa Cruz.  By the way, they get a little help from Hot Tuna on the encore of Satisfaction!

1991: In 1986, Neil Young launched the Bridge School benefit concerts, which raise funds to “ensure that individuals with severe speech and physical impairments achieve full participation in their communities through the use of augmentative & alternative means of communication (AAC) and assistive technology (AT) applications and through the development, implementation and dissemination of innovative life-long educational strategies.” The benefit concert was held every year except 1987, until the final shows in 2016, with many of the largest names in rock & roll participating, such as PAul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, CSN, Jerry Garcia, Tom Petty, Buffalo Springfield, Elton John, Don Henley, Willie Nelson, The Who, Tom Jones, David Bowie, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. and so forth. This FM broadcast captures Neil at the 5th Annual Bridge School Benefit, on November 2, 1991, 33 years ago today.

1990s - #5: In July 1991, Crowded House released their 3rd studio album entitled Woodface,  The disc became the band's first top 10 album in the UK, climbing to #6 on the British charts, but only reached #83 on the Billboard charts in the US.  The disc featured the tune Weather With You, which was a big hit throughout the world except in the US, where it failed to chart.
