The Jimi Hendrix Expereince (Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, and Noel Redding) was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1992. Also in that class were Bobby "Blue" Bland, Booker T. and the M.G.'s, Johnny and Sam & Dave, just to name a few. Neil Young, who inducted Hendrix, performeed All Along The Watchtower, with help from fellow guitar gods Jimmy Page, Robbie Robertson, The Edge, Santana, & Keith Richards, in honor of Jimi. 

This BBC-FM broadcast captures Hendrix in London on April 10, 1967, 59 years ago today, playing two live tracks for the Monday, Monday program. Just two months later, Jimi would make his legendary appearance at Monterrey Pop, which included lighting his guitar on fire!

1960s - #3:  In the winter of 1968, Jimi Hendrix returned to North America for the first time since his 1967 summer shows leading in for the Monkees! He was touring in support of his second album, Axis Bold As Love, which had been released on December 1, 1967 in the UK and in early January in the US. The album climbed to #3 on the US charts, and has stood the test of time, with Rolling Stone ranking #83 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. As most of the album’s tracks were composed using complex studio recording techniques, they did not lend themselves to being played live. Only Little Wing and Spanish Magic Castle became long term fixtures in Jimi’s set lists. This soundboard recording captures Jimi during that tour, in Worcester on March 15, 1968, 58 years ago today.

Jimi Hendrix - 1970-07-04 - Atlanta Pop Festival, GA (SBD)

Originally scheduled for July 3 to July 5, 1970, the second AtLanta International Pop Festival, held near Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron, Georgia, did not finish until near dawn on the 6th. Like the Woodstock festival the previous summer, the event was promoted as "three days of peace, love and music." Also like Woodstock, it became an "open event" when the promoters admitted hordes of folks without tickets once the crowds outside began to tear down the plywood fence that had been erected around the concert site. As a result, no accurate count is available for attendance at the festival, with estimates ranging from between 300,000 and 600,000. Jimi Hendrix headlined the festival, as captured in this soundboard recording from July 4, 1970, 55 years ago today, playing to the largest American audience of his career. He launched into his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner as a fireworks display began around midnight.

It was the first major rock festival that attracted national attention (the Magic Mountain festival took place a week earlier to far less fanfare - go here for more on that), hosting over 200,000 people over 3 days, with 90,000 fans in attendance at its peak on Sunday night. It was the place where Jimi Hendrix and The Who made their U.S. debuts. It marked the first major public appearances by Janis Joplin and Otis Redding. It embodied the counter culture spirit of San Francisco, with almost all the acts performing for free. It was the first multi-racial and multi-genre musical event. And it will ever be synonymous with the Summer of Love. It was officially, The Monterey International Pop Music Festival, better know simply as Monterey Pop. Today in a month dedicated to festivals, we bring you a soundboard recording of the closing night on June 18, 1967, 58 years ago today. The early highlight was the US debut of The Who, who followed a set by the Buffalo Springfield. For The Who, who had been recommended for the festival by advisory board member Paul McCartney, it was the moment in which they captured the attention of fans and critics in the states. For the Springfield, it was the usual chaos, as Neil Young missed the show due to bickering with Stephen Stills, forcing the band to have David Crosby sit in. Of course, that was only the start of the fireworks that transpired on that night. Though on their home turf, the Grateful Dead had the unenviable position of having to play right after The Who's and right before the man who would become a rock god at Monterey.  Jimi Hendrix was also at the festival on the recommendation of  McCartney, who had seen Hendrix play in London. On this night, the whole world got to see what McCartney already knew. The image of Hendrix pouring lighter fluid on his guitar and burning it, is one of the most memorable in rock history. And his playing was unlike anything anyone had ever seen or heard. It was quite unfair that The Mamas and The Papas, who had been leading lights in organizing Monterey Pop, had to follow Jimi on stage. No one could have. Note - numbering starts at 91 as this is taken from a set featuring all 3 days of the show!

One of the most iconic memories of Woodstock is that of Jimi Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner as part of his set to close the festival. Of course, Jimi wasn't playing for a crowd "half a million strong" but rather about 20,000 folks who remained at Bethel on Monday morning. The festival had run so long that most folks were gone before the legendary guitarist took the stage. One other note - this wasn't the first time Jimi played our national anthem in concert - it had actually become a regular part of his set list. For example, he played it at both shows at the Royal Albert Hall in February 1969. 

Today's post features Jimi a year after Woodtsock at yet another massive festival.  For 3 straight years, from 1968 to 1970, The Isle of Wight, a small island just off the south east coast of England, was the site of major rock festivals attracting some of the biggest names in rock music.  The 1968 festival was headlined by The Jefferson Airplane while the 1969 concert featured Bob Dylan and The Who.  The 1970 festival, however, has garnered the most attention, however, for two reasons.  First, Jimi Hendrix headlined the show, which in turn attracted additional acts such as Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, Chicago, The Doors, The Who, ELP, The Moody Blues, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and Miles Davis.  Second, the event attracted over 600,000 people, making the largest concert ever held until that point.  The massive nature of the event also meant it would be the last such show on the Isle of Wight for over 32 years. In 1971 the British Parliament passed the "Isle of Wight Act" preventing gatherings of more than 5,000 people on the island without a special license. This soundboard recording captures Hendrix’s set at the Isle of Wight on August 30, 1970, 54 years ago today.  Jimi would play only 8 more shows after this one prior to his tragic death on September 18, 1970.

The Jimi Hendrix Expereince (Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, and Noel Redding) was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1992. In this case, the Hall decided to induct the whole group, as they did with Elvis Costello & The Attractions. And yet, with Bruce Springsteen and Steve Miller, only the band leaders were inducted (though the hall eventually made it up to the E Street Band). Hard to fathom what the Hall is thinking when it comes to these inductions. By the way, we'll have highlights from the 1992 induction ceremony later this month.

This soundboard recording captures the late, great Jimi Hendrix and the Expereience in Sweden on January 9, 1969, 55 years ago today. In early 1969, Jimi Hendrix, after spending a year based in the US, temporarily returned to London, where he moved in with girlfriend Kathy Etchingham, living in her rented Brook Street flat. Hendrix and the Experience immediately launched a tour of Scandinavia, Germany, and France. Then in February, they played 2 sold-out concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall on February 18 and February 24, 1969.  No one knew at the time, however, that these would be the last ever European shows for the line-up of Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell on drums and Noel Redding on bass. By June, tensions between Hendrix and Redding would result in the bassist being replaced in the band by Billy Cox.

1960s - #2:  In September 1966, Jimi Hendrix, who had been struggling to find any musical success in the US, moved to London hoping new manager Chas Chandler could help him breakthrough. Chandler recruited Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience was born. Hendrix played his way through the club scene in Europe, dazzling audiences and fellow musicians, such as Clapton, McCartney and Lennon, alike. By December 29, Jimi's version of Hey Joe had entered the UK charts, and would eventually peak at #6. Success in the US would have to wait until after his incendiary (in more ways than one since he lit his guitar on fire) in June at Monterrey Pop, but Hendrix had arrived. This FM broadcast captures him right as about the time Hey Joe was climbing the UK charts, on February 12, 1967, 56 years ago today.

1960s - #2: After his historic performance at Monterey Pop in June 1967, Jimi spent the early summer on a brief US Tour, including several dates opening for the Monkees (for the full story of that unlikely pairing, go here). He then returned to Europe, where his music still was far more appreciated at that point than in the US. After playing a handful of shows in England in late August, he headed to Sweden in September to play over a dozen shows. This soundboard captures Jimi and The Experience in Stockholm on September 15, 1967, 55 years ago today. This outstanding set starts with a cover of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and includes 4 cuts from his historic album Are You Experienced, including Foxy Lady, Fire, The Wind Cries Mary, and Purple Haze. In November 1966, the Jimi Hendrix Expereince performed at the Bag O'Nails nightclub in London, with Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Brian Jones, and Mick Jagger in attendance. The reaction was stunned disbelief - they had never seen or heard anyone like Jimi. McCartney was so impressed that when asked for recommendation for acts to play at Monterey Pop, he insisted on Hendrix. Jimi did not disappoint, delivering a performance for the ages, including lighting his guitar on fire! Just a few weeks later, his debut album, Are You Experienced was released in the US, climbing to #5 on the Billboard charts, The disc stayed on the charts for 106 weeks, 27 of those in the Top 40. Critics also raved about the album with author Chris Smith, calling the release "a landmark in a summer of landmark albums", Robert Christgau wrote that the disc was "a roiling sea of guitar that would change how a generation of fans heard music and conceived their on blown minds." Of course, as could only happen in the music industry, as a result of Jimi's success at Monterey Pop, he was asked to tour that summer with THE MONKEES as their opening act! Fans of The Monkees hated Jimi, who left the tour after just 6 shows. Years later, it was revealed that the whole tour had been engineered to gain more publicity for Jimi and The Experience! This TV soundboard recording captures Jimi a year after the Summer Of Love, as a guest on Durty Springfied's UK televsion series on June 5, 1968, 54 years ago today. Dusty, by the way, also has ties to 1967, as that year she released the single The Look Of Love, which climbed to #22 on the Billboard charts in the US.  She also hosted her own TV series that year, the 2nd year of her 4 year run of variety shows on BBC televison. This set features Jimi playing 2 of his own tunes - Stone Free and Voodoo Chile - as well as dueting with Dusty on Mockingbird! Note - the sound isn't perfect but this has too much historical value not to post!

Jimi Hendrix - 1969-12-31 - Fillmore East, NY (SBD)

1969 - Soon after his performance at Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix formed The Band of Gypsies, a new group featuring Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on drums. Some thought that the creation of the all black group was an effort by Hendrix to appease the Black Power movement, which was pressuring him to become more militant in using his fame to speak up for civil rights. Others simply felt it was a necessary business move, as Hendrix was contractually bound to produce an album for producer Ed Chalpin in order to resolve a legal dispute. Still others felt it was another musical experiment for Jimi, as working with Miles created a fusion of jazz and rock which had never before been seen. Whatever the reasons behind Hendrix's decision, he, Cox and Miles rehearsed new material that they debuted at a series of 4 concerts at the Fillmore East. This soundboard recording captures the 2nd of those 4 shows, the late show from December 31, 1969, 52 years ago today. Less than a month later, the experiment known as The Band of Gypsies came to an abrupt end when Hendrix walked off stage at a concert at Madison Square Garden. Their set had been delayed until 3 am, and Hendrix clearly was in no shape to play.  The Band of Gypsies was no more, but Jimi would reform the Experience (with Billy Cox replacing Noel Redding) to play a series of concerts in spring and summer of 1970, his last tour before his death on September 18, 1970,  Download this soundboard to hear one of only 5 concerts ever played by The Band Of Gypsies. By the way - sorry the last 5 tracks are missing but some Jimi is better than none.

ENGLAND - Despite his groundbreaking performance at Monterrey Pop in June 1967, Jimi Hendrix still remained more poplar in England at the time than in his home country. After all, during a US summer tour in 1967, Jimi led in for the Monkees, and not the other way around! He was back in Europe in the fall, playing a series of radio shows in France and England, including this BBC FM broadcast for the program Top Gear from the Playhouse Theater in London on October 6, 1967, 52 years ago today.

One of the most iconic memories of Woodstock is that of Jimi Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner as [art of his set to close the festival.  Of course, Jimi wasn't playing for a crowd "half a million strong" but rather about 20,000 folks who remained at Bethel on Monday morning.  The festival had run so long that most folks were gone before the legendary guitarist took the stage.  One other note - this wasn't the fist time Jami played our national anthem in concert - it had actually become a regular part of his set list.  For example, he played it at this show, as well as at both shows at the Royal Albert Hall in February 1969.

This very good audience recording captures Jim about a year before Woodstock, in Flushing, Queens in New York City, 51 years ago today.  While the sound quality isn't up to our usual standards here at So Many Roads, I'm posting this show for 2 reasons. First, how can you have a month dedicated to Woodstock without a show from Jimi. Second, in 1968, I was living in Flushing, just a subway stop away from where this show was held, in Flushing Meadows Park, site of the 1964 Worlds' Fair and now home of the US Tennis Open.  Of course, I was all of 9 at the time and had no idea about Woodstock or Jimi, though I most certainly did know who the Beatles were!

Woodstock - 1969-08-18 - Bethel, NY (SBD + AUD)

It’s our 4th and final day of music from Woodstock. On Monday morning, August 18, 1969, Jimi Hendrix played his first live gig since the breakup of The Experience in July of that year. He also turned in one the most well known performances in rock history when he played the Star Spangled Banner near the close of his set. Incredibly,less than 30,000 saw this performance, as it carried into Monday morning, by which point most of the half a million string had headed home.  Those of you following this blog know it was not the first time Jimi had played our national anthem, as it was included in several other concerts that year (see our Jimi post later this month for more details). This version of the Star Spangled Banner, however, played near the very end of a rock festival which symbolized the changes our country was going through in the late 60’s, became a lightning rod for controversy and debate. Exactly what message was Jimi trying to deliver? No one will ever know, but one thing is for certain, Jimi’s rendition is truly an iconic moment. When Jimi Hendrix arrived in San Diego for a show on May 24, 1969, a half century ago today. change was in the air. The Coronado Bay Bridge, designed to replace the ferry that shuttled folks across the  was in the final phase of construction before its scheduled August 3rd opening. Also nearing completion was the Fashion Valley Mall, a fifty million dollar shopping center covering seventy-eight acres of land that had previously been home to The Padres' Westgate Park . Other changes brewed on college campuses in the area, Students at San Diego State University responded to headlines about the war in Vietnam by making headlines of their own with campus anti-war rallies, while academic strikes were held in symbolic protest of U.S. bombing raids. Bob Dylan, whose tune The Time's They Are A Changing could have been the theme song of 1960's, turned 28 that day, Also on May 24, The Beatles, who had revolutionized rock and roll, saw their single Get Back hit #1 on Billboard charts, knocking Aquarius/Let The Sunshine, from the landmark musical Hair, from the top slot. The Jimi Hendrix Experience, whose music and style was symbolic of the times, also was in the midst of change.  Hendrix had grown tired of constant conflicts with bassist Noel Redding, so much so that he even let slip to a local reporter that personnel changes in tn the band might be on the horizon. In fact, just about a month later, on June 20, 1969 in Denver, the original Experience played its lats show. Redding would be replaced by Billy Cox. Yet, despite swirling uncertainty, one thing remained constant - the virtuoso abilities of Hendrix on stage.  This soundboard recording of that May 24 show catures Jimi at his peak, and descriptions of the show place it in the pantheon of his finest performances.  Download and listen for yourself.

In late 1966 and early 1967, the Jimi Hendrix Experience toured extensively in England, electrifying crowds with their musical virtuosity and charismatic performances. Fellow musicians such as Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton became huge proponents of Hendrix.  In March 1967, he ventured from England to Germany, playing 3 nights, March 17, 18 and 19, at the Star Club in Hamburg.  The Star Club had become legendary for hosting the Beatles in the spring and winter of 1962, right before Beatlemania took the world by storm!  While no tapes are available of any of the 3 shows at the Star Club, we do have this soundboard recording of a radio broadcast that Jimi did from Hamburg on March 18, 1967, 52 years ago today. The set includes 5 Hendrix classics, songs which would finally become legendary in the US just a few months later, when Jimi played Monterrey!

Jimi 1969 - #2: As promised, here's the second half our our Same Tour, Different Show entry featuring Jimi Hendrix at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969.This one is a soundboard recording from February 24, 1969, a half century ago today., at the Royal Albert Hall, the 2nd of two sold out shows. This show was far superior to the first one on February 18, with Redding and Mitchell recapturing some of the fire and brilliance from the early days of the Experience. Despite that, the end was near for the Experience.  At a June 29 show in Denver, Jimi announced it was the band's last time playing together.  Redding was replaced by Billy Cox, and the original Experience was no more.

Jimi 1969 - #1: In early 1969, tickets went on sale for a February 18 concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London headlined by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The 4500 seats sold out in under 3 hours, prompting Jimi's manager, Mike Jeffrey, to add a 2nd show on February 24, which also sold out almost instantly.  But Jeffrey had motives beyond ticket sales in adding the 2nd show. Looking to release a live album in the spring, and concerned that the band's performances had been uneven in recent months, the 2nd show provided an additional opportunity to record tracks for the potential live disc.  It also provided another opportunity to film the Experience for an upcoming TV special.  Jimi, however, was not all that keen on the TV idea, especially since he had not been asked for any input on the project.  He was also concerned about the soundnand production, insisting that he be able to use his own engineer for the 2 concerts.  To make matters worse, Hendrix was at odds with his 2 band mates, Mitch Mitchell and, especially Noel Redding. over their less than stellar performance on the recent European tour.  On top of that, during rehearsals for the 2 Royal Albert Hall show, Hendrix became so frustrated with sound system issues, that he called his former manager, Chas Chandler to help out with getting the production set up properly.  Somehow, when Jimi hit the stage for the first RAH show on February 18, 1969, 5 decades ago today as captured in this soundboard recording, all the technical issues had been resolved. Jimi turned in a brilliant performance, but his band mates were lifeless, infuriating Hendrix, Jeffrey, and Chandler.  The trio would play just one more Europen show as a unit, and we'll bring you that on February 24 as the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different Show entry.

1960s - #5: In September 1966, Jimi Hendrix, who had been struggling to find any musical success in the US, moved to London hoping new manager Chas Chandler could help him breakthrough. Chandler recruited Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience was born. Hendrix played his way through the club scene in Europe, dazzling audiences and  felow musicians, such as Clapton, McCartney and Lennon, alike. By December 29, Jimi's version of Hey Joe had entered the UK charts, and would eventually peak at #6.  Success in the US would have to wait until after his incendiary (in more ways than one since he lit his guitar on fire) in June at Monterrey Pop, but Hendrix had arrived.  This FM broadcast captures him right as about the time Hey Joe was climbing the UK charts, on the January 30, 1967, 52 years ago today.
