The Who headlined the 1990 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony, playing 3 songs - Substitute, Won't Get Fooled Again, and Pinball Wizard. Other members of that class included Simon & Garfunkel, the Four Seasons, The Kinks, The Four Tops, and Bobby Darin!

This soundboard recording captures The Who in East Rutherford on October 10, 1982, 44 years ago today. The band was on a 40 date tour of the US and Canada to support their latest album, It’s Hard. On December 14, during their 2nd show in Richfield, Ohio, Pete Townshend announced that it would be their last concert in the US. It clearly appeared that The Who was calling it a career. As a result, their performance on December 17, 1982 was broadcast on both FM radio and Pay Per View TV as the general perception at the time was that it would be the final concert ever. Of course, despite calling this their farewell tour, the Who eventually returned to touring in 1989 and conyinued right through last year, when they finally played their last shows (or so they say!).

As mentioned earlier this month, The Clash were part of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's Class of 2003, which also featured Elvis Costello and The Police.  The ceremeony was a celebration of Punk and New Wave.

This TV soundboard recording captures The Clash on Saturday Night Live on October 9, 1982, 44 years ago today. The band was riding the crest of a wave of popularity triggered by 2 huge radio and MTV hits, Should I Stay or Should I Go, and Rock the Casbah. Four days after SNL, they would open for The Who at Shea Stadium, with many saying that they stole the show from the classic rock veterans. Who knew then that it was the beginning of the end? Within a year, Mick Jones had left the band. But, for a few brief moments in 1982, the Clash were on top of the rock world.

1982: When Rockpile unexpectedly disbanded in 1981, Dave Edmunds made wholesale changes in his musical life. He switched record labels, moving from Swan Song to Arista. He put together a new band, which included guitarist Mickey Gee, bassist John David, pianist Geraint Watkins, and drummer Dave Charles. That group would record and tour with Edmunds throughout the rest of the 1980s. Amidst all that change, one thing stayed the same -- Edmunds' ability to play good old straight ahead rock and roll. This FM broadcast captures Edmunds and his new band in New York on September 21, 1982, 44 years ago today.

1982: In the early 1980’s, Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, had a vision. He would bring a large scale rock and roll festival to Southern California that would unite music, television, computer technology, and people, all while addressing logistical issues such as overcrowding, traffic control, and lack of facilities that had plagued earlier festivals. Thus, the US Festivals were born. Somehow, he pulled it off twice, in September 1982 and May 1983, hosting 2 events that were each attended by hundreds of thousands of fans with minimal issues, despite 115-degree heat at the first US show. The two festivals included large air-conditioned tents featuring the US Festival Technology Exposition, a dazzling display of then-cutting edge computers, software, and electronic music devices. Bill Graham handled booking and running the concerts, which clearly contributed to their operational success. Of course, Wozniak’s deep pockets didn’t hurt, as he could afford to lose almost $20 million on the 2 festivals. At the first festival, days 1 and 2 primarily featured new wave and punk bands such as The Clash, The Police, The B52’s, The Talking Heads, Pat Benatar ands Tom Petty. This soundboard recording capture's Petty and the Heartbreakers on September 4, 1982, 44 years ago today.  A thanks to the blog Albums That Should Exist for the original files.

In 1982, the Clash were riding the crest of a wave of popularity triggered by 2 huge radio and MTV hits, Should I Stay or Should I Go, and Rock the Casbah. Two of my buddies from college and I got tickets to see the Clash at the University of Pennsylvania on August 27, 1982, the first, last and only time I would see them live. The saga of that show - especially the trip there - is one of my favorite tales from my book! Less than 2 months later, the band would be opening for The Who at Shea Stadium, with many saying that they stole the show from the classic rock veterans. Who knew then that it was the beginning of the end? Within a year, Mick Jones had left the band. But, for a few brief moments in 1982, the Clash were on top of the rock world.

While there's no recording of the U Penn show, I do have a fantastic soundboard from 10 days earlier in Akron, on August 17, 1982, 44 years ago today.  Download this one to hear the group that once billed itself as "The Only Band That Matters".

Those of you have been long time visitors to So Many Roads know that Marshall Crenshaw is one of my favorite rockers, a musician whose talents, unfortunately, have simply never been appreciated by the masses. Famed critic Robert Christgau has heaped praise on Crenshaw’s first two albums, calling them PERFECT. Trust him - he’s knows of what he speaks! Unfortunately, I've only gotten to see Crenshaw once, at the famed Maxwell's in Hoboken back in October 1996. I was supposed to see him again in March 2020 at the Stanhope House in New Jersey, but COVID cancelled that and its never been rescheduled.

This FM broadcast captures Crenshaw in New Haven on June 27, 1982, 40 years ago today.  He was on tour in support of his debut album, which Christgau rated an A and Rolling Stone gave 4 stars.

In October 1981, U2 released their second album, October, to mixed reviews. The band had struggled with this disc, often feeling conflicted between the themes of religion and spirituality contained in the songs and the rock and roll life style they were living. Recording was further complicated by the fact that a briefcase containing lyrics was stolen by fans, through it was eventually returned. Perhaps the band reached a bit too far with October. Years later Bono himself said about the album, "Can you imagine your second album—the difficult second album—it's about God?" In any event, despite the less than stellar reviews and poor sales of October, the band toured extensively in support of the disc. This soundboard recording captures them in the Netherlands on May 14, 1982, 44 years ago today.

The Kinks entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, the first year they were eligible.  Other members of that class included The Who, Simon & Garfunkel, The Four Tops, The Four Seasons, and Bobbby Darin, just to name a few.

This soundboard recording captures The Kinks at the Rockpalast on April 4, 1982, 44 years ago today, during their 2nd wave of popularity. The band's 1977 album Sleepwalker climbed to #21 on the Billboard chart in the US, with the title track and the tune Juke Box Music becoming staples on FM radio. Around the same time, new wave acts such as The Pretenders and The Jam recorded covers of Stop Your Sobbing and David Watts, bringing the Kink's music to a whole new audience. A cover by Van Halen of You Really Got Me also sparked renewed interest in the Kink's music. Then in 1979, The Kink's released the album Low Budget, which climbed to #11 on the Billboard charts. Their next album Give The People What They want, released in late 1981, went to #15 on the Billboard charts, continuing the band's string of chart success. By the way, The Kinks were on the same bill as Van Morrison, who's Rockpalast appearance we posted earlier today.

Van "The Man" Morrison was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993, along with Cream, The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Sly & The Family Stone, just to name a few.  The ever reclusive and unpredictable Mr, Morrison skipped the ceremony, having Robbie Robertson accept the honor on his behalf, while the Counting Crows were recruited to play Caravan.

This soundboard recording features Van Morrison from The Rockpalast on April 4, 1982, 44 years ago this very day. An interesting note is that the concert actually started a 11 pm on April 3 with a set from Rick James. Van came on second, starting his performance at 1:00 am in the morning on April 4 and he would be followed by the Kinks, whose set we'll bring you a little later today! This show took place about 2 months after Van released the album Beautiful Vision, a disc which has met which mixed critical reviews over the years. For example, while Robert Christgau gave the disc a grade of A-, reviewer John Milward called it “emphatically half-great.” Opinions about the disc are so divided that Rolling Stone magazine has flipped flopped its opinion of Beautiful Vision over the years. When it first debuted, they gave the disc a 4 out of 5 rating. However, years later, they ranked it as one of the “15 worst albums by great bands.” Personally, I’m huge fan of the album and of songs such as Dweller On The Threshold, Cleaning Windows, Northern Muse, She Gives Me Religion and the title track.

1980s - #1: The year 1982 was one of the few between 1977 and 1995 when I didn't see either the Grateful Dead or Jerry Garcia in concert. I was busy getting my MBA and unfortunately, music took a back seat to my studies. As a result, I really didn't have a good sense as to how well the band was playing that year until a few good friends got me hooked on several shows from 1982. The more I dug into the 1982 shows, the more I realized that the Dead and Jerry were at the top of their game that year. This soundboard recording from March 7, 1982, 44 years ago today, from San Jose, is the perfect introduction to a very under rated year in the long strange trip of the Jerry Garcia Band.

1980s - #4: In late 1981, the Allman Brothers were a band in deep trouble. Their record label, Capricorn, had collapsed about a year earlier due to financial issues,. In addition, Southern Rock was losing popularity amidst the punk and new wave revolution. Moreover, in fighting, especially between Greg Allman and Dickie Betts, often fueled by alcohol and drugs, was tearing the band apart. By 1982, kt was over. As Dickie Betts explained, "we broke up in '82 because we decided we better just back out or we would ruin what was left of the band’s image."  Fortunately for rock fans, the band would get back together in 1986 and continue its long, illustrious career well into the 21st century.  This soundboard recording captures the allman Brothers in one of theor last concerts before their 1982 break up, in Gainesville, on January 16, 1982, 44 years ago today.

I've seen Joe Jackson on 3 occasions - in February 1981, in August 1980 and then in October 1982. When I saw him that final time he was in the midst of making the transition from angry punk rocker to an artist playing tunes influenced by Cole Porter, jazz and big band music. I've always preferred Angry Joe!

This FM Broadcast captures Jackson during this Cole Porter moment, in Boston, on December 9, 1982, 43 years ago today, right after the release of  the album, Night and Day. The disc went to #4 on the Billboard charts, Jackson’s only top ten album. The singles Steppin' Out" and Breaking Us In Two both were top 20 hits. Gentle Joe was clearly more chart friendly than his angry predecessor.

I saw Tom Petty live once, on April 1, 1983 at the Brendan Byrne (later the Continental Airlines, and finally, the Izod) Arena. Nick Lowe was the lead-in band, making for quite a new wave night of music. Petty played all the big hits, plus surprised us all with a rendition of Hang on Sloopy!

This FM broadcast recording captures Tom Petty in London on December 12, 1982, 43 years ago today, and just a few months before I saw him.  Petty had released his his 5th album, Long After Dark, in November 1982. The disc was the first to feature Howie Epstein on bass and backing vocals.  Long After Dark climbed to #9 on the US Billboard charts, and spawned the MTV hit single, You Got Lucky.

Fleetwood Mac 1982 - Back To Back - #2: As the 1980s began, Fleetwood Mac sought to return to the glory days of Rumours. Their last album of the 1970, Tusk, was perceived as a failure, despite selling 4 million copies as a double album, primarily because it didn’t reach the same heights as Rumours. In contrast, their 1982 disc, Mirage, was a huge success for the band spending 5 weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts and certifying Double Platinum. The disc yielded 3 hit singles - Hold Me which went to at #4 on the Billboard charts, Love in Store went to #22, and Gypsy, which reached #12. Videos for Hold Me and Mirage received extensive airplay on MTv. The band launched a short tour in support of the album playing dates in 29 cities in the US. This soundboard matrix recording captures Fleetwood Mac on October 20, 1982, 43 years ago today, in Oakland. Download this one, then stop back tomorrow for the 2nd show in this Back to Back set.
