1990s - #5: On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp, inspired by Bob Dylan's pleas at Live Aid to help the family farmer in America, launched Farm Aid intending to do just that! That first concert, which was held at the University of Illinois, attracted 80,000 fans and raised over $9 million. Over the past 4 decades, the effort has raised well over $75 million to help America's family farms while also serving a a key organization to raise awareness of the importance and plight of those farmers. This TV SBD recording captures highlights from Farm Aid 1992, held in Texas, on March 14, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today. The line up is filled with rock and roll hall of famers, including the 3 founders!

On October 3, 2000, Paul Simon released his 10th solo studio album, The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2001, making Simon the first artist to be nominated in that category in five consecutive decades (1960s-2000s). In 2006, Paul McCartney became the only other artist to match that feat when his disc Chaos and Creation in the Backyard was nominated. The album went to #19 on the US Billboard charts and to #20 on the UK charts. This soundboard recording captures Simon on tour in support of You're The One, at the Beacon Theater on December 2, 2000, 2 dozen years go today.

2000s - #6: On May 9, 2006, Paul Simon released Surprise, his 11th studio album and first since in 6 years, since You’re The One in 2000. The album went to #14 on the Billboard charts, the best any of his discs had performed since Rhythm of The Saints climbed to #4 back in 1990. Simon promoted the album extensively, including TV appearances on Sunday Morning, Good Morning America and Saturday Night Live. In June, he launched the Surprise tour in support of the album, which ran until November and consisted of 27 dates in the US and UK. This FM broadcast finds him near the end of the tour, on October 24, 2006, 18 years ago today, at the Tower Theater.

Dylan 1999 - Back To Back - #2:  As promised yesterday, here's the 2nd half of our Back To Back set featuring Bob Dylan in 1999.  On july 27, 1999, 25 years ago today, Dylan moved from the confines of Tramps to the World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden. The concert was part of his his 38 show run wanother rock legend, who like him was born in 1941, started as a folk rocker and evolved his sound in a variety of directions over time.  Each night, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon would perform a solo set of music, bridged by a 4 or 5 song set where the iconic duo shared the stage together. Their duet usually produced the highlight of the evening, as the two teamed on Sounds of Silence, with Dylan filling the role once played by Art Garfunkel. This soundboard recording captures Dylan set at the Garden, with Simon on the closing 4 songs.

2001 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2010-03-19 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2001 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony was defined by two bigger than life stars who didn't perform.  Michael Jackson accepted the honor live, but then exited. Queen performed several tunes, but of course, without Freddie Mecury who passed away a decade earlier. Paul Simon became a 2 time inductee, having been honored pereviously for his time with Simon & Garfunkel. Steely Dan, Aerosmith and Solomon Burke all took the stage after their inductions, while Ricky  Martin played a trio of songs in honor of Ritchie Valens.

Simon and Garfunkel's first album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., was released on October 19, 1964. It consisted of 12 songs, five of which were written by Simon. The album initially flopped.  The dou was at odds with each other, which unfortunately, would become all too common place during their on agian, off again career.  And so, Simon left Garfunkel behind and moved to England.  In London, he played small clubs and found a music scene where he felt valued.  He would eventually return to the US and reunite with Garfunkel after the release of a remixed, electrified version of Sounds of Silence, which originally appeared as an acoustic track on the aforementioned Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M,, soared up the charts reaching #1 in January, 1966.  This FM broadcast captures Simon solo during his time in London, on January 1, 1965, 58 years ago today.  Note - this is a rebroadcast of the show from 201 so the DJ commentary s from the re-broadcast, not the opirinal 1965 show.

1975 - After the break up on Simon & Garfunkel in 1970, Paul Simon embarked on a solo career and found instant success. His self titled album, released in 1972, went to#4 on the billboard charts and spawned the hits singles Mother & Child Reunion and Me &Julio Down By The School Yard. The next year, he released the album There Goes Rhymin' Simon which went to #2 on the Billboard charts, as did the singles Kodachrome and Loves Me Like A Rock. Then in October 1975, he released the disc Still Crazy After All These Years which would become his only solo #1 album, and yield his only solo #1 single, 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover.  During a brief tour of Europe in December 1975, in support of his latest album, Simon's solo success took a back seat to a one night only reunion.  As captured in this FM broadcast, on December 11, 1975, 46 years ago today, Art Garfunkel joined Simon on stage in London for 4 songs.  rekindling hopes for a reunion.  The two had reconciled to some degree earlier that year, with Garfunkel collaborating with Simon on the tune My Little Town.  Despite that, it would take 7 years, until 1982, before the duo would reunite for a tour, only to have  the old wounds re-emerge and drive them apart again,

The disc would climb to #4 on the Billboard charts, and received 2 Grammy nominations, for Album of Te Year and Producer Of The Year. Critical review for the album were also strong with Rolling Stone and Blender giving the album 4 stars while Entertainment Weekly graded it an A plus.  In early 1991, Simon launched the Born In Th Right Time Tour (taken from the name of the one oif the songs on Rhythm Of The Saints) in support of teh disc,  The tour would run in 1992 and take Simon to all 6 inhabited continents -  North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa.  This soundboard recording captures him in Japan during that tour, on October 12, 1991, 29 years ago today.

This high quality audience tape captures Billy playing the final concert at the Nassau Coliseum, on August 4, 20156, just 2 years ago today.  He gets some help midway through the show from another native New Yorker, Paul Simon. As the Coliseum had the worst acoustics and sight lines of arena in the NY/NJ area, and was found to be filled with asbestos, they couldn't tear it down soon enough from my perspective.  They've since built a new arena on the site, and fittingly, Joel played the first concert in their new venue!

Paul Simon - 1987-12-13 - Madison Square Garden, NY (SBD) 

As mentioned in an earlier post, Paul Simon and Irwin Redlener, MD co-founded the Children’s Health Fund (CHF) in 1987 to provide health care to homeless children. Their efforts began in New York City, and Simon pulled out all the stops to raise money for his new foundation. He headlined a benefit concert at Madison Square Garden on December 13, 1987, 28 years ago today, with some help from a few friends, including Paul Shaffer, Deborah Harry, Lou Reed, Dion, James Taylor, Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen. In late 199o0, Paul Simon released the album Rhythm of The Saints, the follow up to his Grammy Award winning disc, Graceland. Whereas Graceland drew on African music for inspiration, Rhythm of The Saints featured Latin American influences. Rhythm of The Saints would be nominated for 2 Grammys, and rose to #4 on the Billboard charts, just one spot lower than Graceland’s peak position. In January 1991, Simon launched a world tour in support of the album, which included a concert on the Great Lawn in Central Park on August 15 of that year for an audience of several hundred thousand. That show was officially released on both CD and VHS tape (though it never been re-released as DVD). This soundboard captures Simon at the last show of that tour, almost 2 years after it began, in Uruguay on December 5, 1992, 23 years ago today.

Paul Simon - 1980-10-07 - Philadelphia, PA (SBD) 

On August 12, 1980, Paul Simon released One Trick Pony, his 5th studio solo album, which equaled his output with former partner Art Garfunkel. The album is best known for the Grammy-nominated track "Late In The Evening" which was a hit for Simon in 1980, peaking at #6 in the U.S. The disc would go to #12 on the Bill board charts, but a bit disappointing compared to his previous solo releases which al cracked the top 5. Simon would have another commercial disappointment with Hearts & Bones in 1983, but would bounce back with Graceland in 1986, a disc that would go to #3 on the US charts, be nominated for 4 Grammy’s winning album of the year, and receive rave critical reviews. All that was in the future, however, when Simon played Philadelphia on October 7, 1980, 35 years ago today. Paul Simon is a 2 time inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, entering in 1990 for his work with Art Garfunkel and then again in 2001 as a solo artist. James Taylor inducted Simon & Garfunkel while Marc Anthony handled that task for Simon’s solo career. Both Simon & Garfunkel also made induction speeches on behalf of other winners, Paul on behalf of Neil Diamond and Stevie Wonder while Art handled that task for Cat Stevens.

2011 - On April 8, 2011, Paul Simon released his 12th solo studi album, entitled So Beautiful or So What. The disc debuted at #4 on the billboard charts, selling almost 70,000 copies in its first week. The disc also received critical acclaim, with Allmusic giving it 4 ½ star review, while Robert Christgau gave it a grade of A. In addition, Rolling Stone ranked it #3 on its list of the 50 best albums of 2011. Simon went n tour from April to July in support of the album, then after a 2 month break, went back out on the road from October to December. This FM broadcast captures him in Bloomington, Indiana on November 20, 2011, just 2 years ago today. On May 9, 2006, Paul Simon released Surprise, his 11th studio album and first since in 6 years, since You’re The One in 2000. The album went to #14 on the Billboard charts, the best any of his discs had performed since Rhythm of The Saints climbed to #4 back in 1990. Simon promoted the album extensively, including TV appearances on Sunday Morning, Good Morning America and Saturday Night Live. In June, he launched the Surprise tour in support of the album, which ran until November and consisted of 27 dates in the US and UK. This concert finds him near the end of the tour, on October 21, 2006, 7 years ago today, at Radio City in New York.
