On May 6, 2008, Neil Diamond released his 27th studio album, entitled Home Before Dark.  The disc went to #1 on both the US and UK album charts, making Diamond at the time, the oldest performer to have a #1 album (That record has since been surpassed by several artists, including Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney and Tony Bennett).  Just over a month after the album's release, on June 29, 2008, 17 years ago today, Diamond took the stage at Glastonbury, as captured in the FM broadcast.

1970s - #6: In October 1970, Neil Diamond released his t6th studio album, entitled Top Root Manuscipt.  The disc certified gold in less than 3 months, rising to #13 on the Billboard album charts, thanks in large part to the success of the sinlge Cracklin' Rosie, which became Diamond's first #1 hit. The album also featured a cover of the Hollie's He Ain't Heavy (He's My Brother), which went to #20 on the charts, and the tune, Soolaimon, which would eventually become a staple of his live perfromances. This FM broadcast captures Neil on tour in support of the album, in London, on May 29, 1971, 54 years ago today.

Neil Diamond - 2008-08-14 - MSG, New York, NY (TV SBD)

As 1969 dawned, Neil Diamond was still looking for his big breakthrough.  He was hardly the level of star who would find himself on the Woodstock invite list. While he had a hit in 1966 with Cherry Cherry, his biggest claim to fame to that point was his songwriting for other artists. For example, The Monkees took his tune I'm A Believer to the top of the charts in 1966, and another of his songs,  A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You to the #2 spot. By the middle of 1969, all that changed. Just as the counter cuture reached Woodstock on August 15, 1969, Neil's tune Sweet Caroline, went to #4 on the Billboard charts and certified gold.  The tune launched Daimond's incredible solo career, and of course, has become iconic, sung at ballgames, played at weddings, used in commercials, etc. By the way, if you haven't seen the Neil Diamond musicil, "A Beautiful Noise", you should. It's incredibly well done and the story of Sweet Caroline is truly one of the highlights of the show.

2011 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2011-03-14 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2011 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony was, as cleveland.com put it, "a night for toasting cult figures, fringe characters, and somewhat unsung heroes." Neil Diamond, Leon Russell, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Dr. John and Darlene Love made up a class that to call it eclectic would be an undertstatement. In fact, cleveland.com suggested it might be the worst hall of fame class in history in terms of star power.  That said, every inductee showed up and played a set, filling the Waldorf with some of rock's most iconic tunes, from Right Place, Wrong Time to A Song for You to School's Out to Da Doo Run Run to Sweet Caroline.

In early 1972, Neil Diamond scored his 2nd #1 single when Song Sung Blue climbed to the top of the charts (his first had been Crackin' Rosie in 1970).  In August that year, he played 10 sold out shows at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles.  The August 24 show from that run was released as the double live album, Hot August Night, which went double platinum and climbed to #5 on the Billboard charts. The album would become the stuff of legends, and cemented Diamond's legacy.  Four decades later, he returned to the Greek for 2 August concerts which due to ticket demand, quickly grew to 5 sold out shows.  Diamond clearly understood the importance of this run, as documented by Steve Baltin of The Hollywood Reporter: “Forty years ago it made my day, made my year, made my professional life, the Greek Theatre did,” Diamond said of the album that changed his career. Indeed, the impact of the venue was foremost on Diamond’s mind and he seemed visibly moved when, during the intro to “Cherry, Cherry,” he had the house lights turned all the way up to “take in” the crowd. “I love you,” he said to the screaming masses. “This is a beautiful sight for me”.  This excellent audience recording captures Diamond during "Hot August Night 2012", capturing the August 18, 2012 show, from 6 years ago today, in its entirety. Incredibly, in late 1972, soon after the 10 night stand at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles that yielded the legendary live disc Hot August Night, Neil Diamond took an almost 4 year sabbatical from live performances. When he finally returned to the stage, it was in early 1976 with a tour of New Zealand and Australia. Diamond set attendance records everywhere he played with shows often selling out even before the dates were officially announced. By the time the three-week tour wrapped up in Sydney, Diamond had played to more than 150,000 fans. The tour was so popular, in fact, his final Sydney concert was broadcast live, as a gesture of thanks to everyone who had supported him and for those who had been unable to attend the shows. This FM broadcast captures that final, triumphant concert in Sydney on on March 9, 1976, 39 years ago today.

Electric Proms #4: Our final show in our Electric Proms fourplay is an FM broadcast featuring Neil Diamond on October 30, 2010, 4 years ago today. Diamond closed the festival, which turned out to be the last set ever performed at the Electric Proms series. In January 2011, the BBC announced the cancellation of all future Electric proms shows due to financial cutbacks. For Diamond, it was his first concert in almost 2 years. As he took the stage, he remarked “I've not performed for two years and I was wondering before I came out here tonight, 'Are you going to make a fool out of yourself?' And the answer is absolutely, yes. I have every intention of doing that." In truth, what Diamond did was wow the crowd. He played a mix of tune from his soon to be released album Dreams, such as I’m A Believer, which Neil wrote but was made famous by The Monkees, Ain't No Sunshine and Midnight Train To Georgia as well as classics such as I Am… I Said, Sweet Caroline and Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show. If Electric Proms had to end, it couldn’t have left on a higher note.
