Stevie Wonder - 1974-01-31 - London, UK (SBD)

1970s - #4: On August 3, 1973, Stevie Wonder released the album Innervisions, which many critics and fans cite as perhaps his finest work. The album spawned two hit singles in Higher Ground, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts, and Higher Ground, which reached the #8 position. Innervisions received widespread critical praise, went to #4 on the Billboard charts and won three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. The album’s lasting impact is evidenced by it being ranked #23 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Just 3 days after release of the disc, Stevie was involved in a devastating car accident in North Carolina, while traveling north after a concert the day before. The accident left him in a coma for 4 days and had fans wondering if Innervisions would be the last work from this legend. Fortunately, he recovered, though he did lose his sense of smell as a result of the injuries he suffered. This soundboard recording captures Stevie at the Rainbow Theatre in London on January 31, 1974, 39 years ago today, just a few months after his near fatal accident. John Fogerty - 1985-01-31 - Los Angeles, CA (FM)

1980s - #4: While recording the album Centerfield for Warner Brothers in 1984, John Fogerty made a few friends at the label. About 200 to be exact. John invited them all to a private concert just a few weeks after disc was released.  For the gig, Fogerty put together an all star backing band,  including half of Booker T. & the MG's, the drummer for the Tubes, the wailing sax from Duane Eddy's classic early hits, and a gospel quartet to top it off.  Then he had Showtime film the whole show. That night, John and his "All Star" band performed some of his favorite old classic songs - many from his childhood, and none that he'd written  - as well as one tune from the new album, Rock N' Roll Girls. Of course, he was still feuding with his former record label at the time, so CCR classics were no where to be found in the set list. This FM broadcast captures that magical night, including several interview with John, from Los Angeles on January 31, 1985, 28 years ago today.

1960s - #3: In November 30 1967, Jefferson Airplane released the album After Bathing at Baxter's, the follow up to the breakthrough disc, Surrealistic Pillow. Unlike its predecessor, After Bathing did not have any radio friendly tunes such as Somebody To Love or White Rabbit.  Rather it was a psychedelic venture, featuring  longer. more experimental tunes. Many of those songs reflect the influence of LSD on the band's work. In addition, Jorma Kaukonen's guitar work is more prominent on the album, reflecting the band's move toward more improvisational work when performing live. This soundboard recording captures the band in our featured city of San Francisco on January 30, 1968, 45 years ago today, and exactly 2 months after the release of After Bathing At Baxter's. The Beatles - 1969-01-30 - Apple Headquarters (SBD)

The 1960s - #4: On January 2, 1969, The Beatles convened at Twickenham Studios to begin recording and filming their next project together, a back to basics album that would culminate in a live performance. While the idea of performing live did not thrill John and George, they went along with the idea in hope that less reliance on studio overdubs and technical wizardry might make recording fun again. Unfortunately, within days, all of the tensions that had surfaced during the recording of the White Album reappeared. George wound up in terrible arguments with both Paul and John, and even temporarily left the band. He returned, on the condition that recording of the album move back to the more familiar and friendly confines of  the studios at Apple Headquarters in London. That was a momentous decision, as it resulted in one of the most famous live performances in rock history. On January 30, 1969, 44 years ago today, the 4 Beatles, accompanied by Billy Preston, as well as family and friends, took to the rooftop for an impromptu concert. Before they were halted by the police for “disturbing the peace”, they ran through several takes of 5 new songs including Get Back, Don’t Let Down, I’ve Got A Feeling, One After 909 and Dig A Pony (for more detail, go here). For the Beatles, it was their first, and unfortunately, last, live performance since 1965. For a few moments, all the tensions between the Fab Four vanished, as they rocked out to an astonished lunch time crowd on the streets below. Those on-lookers straining to see what was transpiring on the roof could have never guessed that The Beatles would be history in less than a year. For 42 brief moments, Beatlemania still seemed alive and well. When the police finally shut down the show, John Lennon stepped to the microphone once last time, to say “thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we passed the audition.” If only it had been a try out and not the end. Fortunately, but sadly, this soundboard recording preserves that landmark moment.

Pink Floyd - 1977-01-29 - Berlin, Germany (SBD)

1970s - #3: On January 23, 1977, Pink Floyd released Animals their 10th studio album, entitled Animals, and launched the European leg of their In The Flesh tour in support of the new disc with a show in Dortmund. The tour featured the famous character inflatables puppets, a pyrotechnic "waterfall" and one of the biggest and most elaborate stages to date, including umbrella-like canopies that would raise from the stage to protect the band from the elements. The set list each night consisted of playing the entire Animals disc, then the complete Wish You Were Here album, and ending with encores from Dark Side of The Moon. Throughout the tour, Roger Waters demonstrated all sorts of aggressive behavior, from arguing with the lighting crew in NY, to yelling at the audiences for talking during quieter numbers, to even spitting in the face of a fan. Waters began to realize that fame had alienated him from his audience, which became part of the inspiration behind Pink Floyd's next project, The Wall. Despite the difficulties on this tour, the band's playing was, for the most part superb, as evident in this soundboard recording from Berlin from January 29, 1977, 43 years ago today.  Unfortunately, all we have is the first set.

1970s - #2: On March 12 and 13, 1971, The Allman Brothers Band played 2 shows at the Fillmore East in New York which would help make them legends. Selections from those 2 shows were released in July 1971 as the double album, At Fillmore East. That disc is frequently cited as one of the best live albums ever produced. In addition, the Allmans played so many shows at the Fillmore East that they were often called "Bill Graham's House Band. In fact, when Graham closed that venue on June 27, 1971, it was the Allmans who were the final act! That said, while the Allmans relationship with the Fillmore East gets most of the attention, their performances at its sister venue, The Fillmore West, in San Francisco, should never be overlooked! In fact, they played a series of shows at the Fillmore West in January 1971 that served as a warm up for the At Fillmore East concerts. This high quality audience recording captures the first night of that run on January 28, 1971, 42 years ago today, from the legendary bay area venue.

1990s - #4: This show, from The Berkeley Community Theatre on January 25, 1992, 21 years ago today, features 2 San Francisco legends, Hot Tuna, and their special guest Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. In addition to Hot Tuna and Weir, the concert, entitled Blues Against Blindness, featured Lisa Kindred, Joe Louis Walker with Big Bones, Dr. John with special guest Maria Muldaur, and John Lee Hooker with Roy Rogers. The show was one in a long line of rock concerts held to raise fund for SEVA, an international health organization best known for its work in Africa and Asia. Artists such as the Grateful Dead, The Band, Bruce Hornsby, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Graham Nash and Paul Simon, just to name a few, have participated in dozens of shows over the last 34 years (go here for more on SEVA benefit concerts). Eric Clapton – 1990-01-24 – London, UK (SBD)

1990s - #3: In 1987, Eric Clapton opened the year with a series of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London. That tradition would last for another 9 years, until 1996. Over that decade, EC played countless memorable shows at the RAH, including shows with a full orchestra behind him. Highlights from the 1990 and 1991 runs were captured on the live album 24 Nights. While 24 Nights is a wonderful album, I’ve never been a big fan of live discs that pick and choose songs from different nights on the tour. Every concert has its own unique feel and rhythm and live compilation albums can never capture that energy or emotion. That’s why we all love bootlegs, because we get to hear the show exactly as it happened, spectacular moments, unexpected surprises and even outright flubs. In that vein, this soundboard recording captured Slowhand at the RAH on January 24, 1990, 23 years ago today, the 6th of 18 shows he played at that venue that year. This one features EC with his traditional 4-piece band, including Nathan East on bass, Greg Philingannes on keyboards and Steve Feronne on drums. I find this one show to be far more energetic than the tunes presented on 24 Nights but download it and see/hear for yourself.

1960s - #2: On January 20, 1967, the Stones released the album Between The Buttons in the UK. This TV soundboard broadcast from 2 days later, January 22, 1967, 46 years ago today, captures the Stones at the London Palladium promoting the new disc. Interestingly, the only song in the set that appeared on the British version of the album was Connections. Let’s Spend The Night Together and Ruby Tuesday, however, appeared on the US version of the disc, which was released on February 11. The latter tune would go to #1 on the Billboard charts in the US and help propel the album to the #2 position!

1980s - #3: In 1980, The Police were riding a wave of success both in the UK and the US. Their 2nd album, Regatta de Blanc, reached number 1 in the UK, as did the singles Message In A Bottle and Walking On The Moon. In the US, the title track won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental. Despite those accomplishments, the band was still at the stage where they were playing small clubs in the US, not major arenas. That would come later, with the release of Ghost in The Machine in 1981. This FM broadcast, from the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio on January 21, 1980, 33 years ago today, therefore, captures the band just as they were beginning to receive worldwide recognition. The set list features songs from their first 2 albums, played with the energy and ferocity of a young band starting on its journey to stardom. 1980s - #2: In the early 1970's, Palo Alto was home to Sophie's, a rock club which the Jerry Garcia Band frequently played.  later that decade, the venue became The Keystone Palo Alto, sister to the famous Keystone Berkeley. The Keystone Palo Alto had three levels, with a stainless steel dance floor in front of the stage and two raised levels of seating. Often times, bands would play both Keystones, to ensure they covered both the San Francisco and San Jose crowds. The name change from Sophie's to the Keystone did nothing to change the frequency with which the Jerry Garcia Band played the club. It still served as a home away from home for Garcia's solo gigs. This soundboard recording captures the JGB at the keystone Palo Alto on January 20, 1980, 33 years ago today. 1960s - #1: As 1967 began, Cream picked up where they left off at the end of 1966, playing a series of clubs and colleges across the United Kingdom. Amazingly, while the band had been together since July 1966, they had played only 1 show - on December 17, 1966 in Paris - outside their home country. All that would change in late February, when they launched their first European Tour, followed by their first U.S. shows in March. Cream would become a wold wide phenomenon, which ironically, would become the source of their eventual breakup just over a year later. In January 1967, however, Clapton, Baker and Bruce were in peak form, enjoying their new partnership and creating a sound unlike anything heard prior. This soundboard recording captures them on January 15, 1967, 46 years ago today at the Ricky Tick Club in London, one of our featured cities this month at So Many Roads.

Bruce Springsteen - 1985-01-15 - Charlotte NC (SBD)

1980s - #1: On June 4, 1984, Bruce Springsteen released Born In The USA, an album which took him far beyond his traditional fan base in terms of tone, sound and commercial appeal. Filled songs about every day Americans doing their best in the face of hardship, acknowledging that the American Dream was far from perfect, Born In The USA saw Springsteen take a political tone for the first time in his music. The album also was his first deliberate attempt to write a popular hit song, and he succeeded beyond even his wildest expectations. The first single from the disc, Dancing In The Dark (notable for Courtney Cox’s appearance in the video dancing with Bruce), went to #2 on the Billboard charts. Six other tunes from Born In The USA would also crack the top 10. The album itself went to #1, and garnered Springsteen 3 Grammy Award nominations. The disc also featured Springsteen’s first use of a synthesizer in his music, another bow to the current trends in pop music. Critics loved the disc, with Robert Christgau giving it a grade of A+ and the Village Voice awarding it album of the year. Bruce launched a massive 15 month tour in support of the album, playing 156 show on 4 continents. This soundboard recording captures Bruce near the middle of the tour, in Charlotte on January 15, 1985, 28 years ago today.
