1960s - #5: On March 17, 1967, the Grateful Dead released their self titled debut album, one of a host of incredible first albums from that legendary year. The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, Janis Joplin, and the Jefferson Airplane (with Grace Slick) also released their debut discs that year. Even then, however, the Dead were far more about what transpired on stage than in the studio. The day after their album hit record stores, March 18, 1967, 59 years ago this very day, the Dead found themselves at Winterland in their home town of San Francisco. Per the Day Of The Dead website, this soundboard recording, is a "quintessential, elemental piece of raw, primal Dead that just cannot be missed."  The show also features one of the only two available live recording of the tune Golden Road To Unlimited Devotion.  Download this one, then while you listen, read more about it here.

1960s - #2: Van Morrison's legendary career began in April 1964 as part of the band, Them. The band scored two UK hits in 1965 with Baby, Please Don't Go at #10 and Here Comes the Night at #2  The latter song and Mystic Eyes were both Top 40 hits in the US. Of course, the band's most well known tune, and one Van the Man stills plays in concert today, over a half century later, was Gloria.  Van left Them in late 1966, embarking on a solo career   This soundboard recording captures him backed by the The Blizzards, in the Netherlands, on March 9, 1967, just 59 years ago today and just about 3 weeks before he went into studio in New York, where he would record what still might be his most well know song, Brown Eyed Girl.

1960s - #1:  As 1967 began, Cream picked up where they left off at the end of 1966, playing a series of clubs and colleges across the United Kingdom. Amazingly, while the band had been together since July 1966, they had played only 1 show - on December 17, 1966 in Paris - outside their home country. All that would change in late February, when they launched their first European Tour, followed by their first U.S. shows in March. Cream would become a world wide phenomenon, which ironically, would become the source of their eventual breakup just over a year later. In early 1967, however, Clapton, Baker and Bruce were in peak form, enjoying their new partnership and creating a sound unlike anything heard prior. This soundboard recording captures them in Stockholm on March 7, 1967, 59 years ago today and just 3 weeks prior to their first American shows.

Airplane 1967 - Back to Back - #1: In late 1966, the Jefferson Airplane recruited Grace Slick, and the rest, as they say, is history. Over the course of the next 6 months, the Airplane took center stage as one of the leading bands of the new psychedelic rock movement that emerged from San Francisco. Their breakthrough album, Surrealistic Pillow, produced by the Dead's Jerry Garcia, and released in February 1967, spawned two huge hits, Somebody To Love and White Rabbit. The Airplane played at the Human Be-In in January and then at the Monterrey Pop Festival in June, helping inaugurate the Summer of Love, in which thousands of young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. The year 1967 was as one of those transcendent moments in rock history, with debut albums from Grateful Dead, The Doors and Jimi Hendrix, as well the release on June 1 of what many folks believe is the greatest album of all time, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles. The Airplane were an integral part of this musical revolution. This soundboard recording, from February 4, 1967, 59 years ago today, captures them during the early show at the Fillmore on their home turf in San Francisco just as they began their rise to national prominence. Download this one, then come back later today, twice tomorrow, and the next day for parts 2 to 5 of this Back To Back Set.

It was billed as the summer of love. In the wake of the Monterrey Pop Festival in June 1967, the flower power generation and psychedelic rock music, both of which had become synonymous with San Francisco, were firmly embedded in the public consciousness. On July 7, Time Magazine featured a cover story entitled, The Hippies: The Philosophy of a Subculture. It is estimated that around 100,000 people traveled to San Francisco in the summer of 1967. The media was right behind them, casting a spotlight on the Haight-Ashbury district. Albums such as Sgt. Pepper's by the Beatles and Surrealistic Pillow from San Francisco's own Jefferson Airplane, with their vivid imagery and allusions to drug use, climbed to the top of the Billboard charts. Ever the sharp eyed promoter, Bill Graham took the Airplane and Grateful Dead on tour across the US and into Canada, billing the shows as "Bill Graham Presents The San Francisco Scene" in order to capitalize on the attention that the city of the Golden Gate Bridge had been receiving. The 2 bands played Toronto from July 31 to August 5. This soundboard recording captures part of the Grateful Dead's set and the entire Jefferson airplane performance from August 4, 1967, 58 years ago today. Stop back tomorrow for a 2nd installment from this joint tour.

The connections between Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead and the Jefferson Airplane go far beyond their 1967 visit to Canada. As mentioned above, both the Dead and the Airplne emerged from the San Francisco scene in 1965 and would be leading lights of psychedelic rock. The 2 bands would headline the Human Be-in on January 14, 1967 in Golden Gate Park, a concert which put San Francisco’s counter culture on the map and served as a prelude to the Summer Of Love.  The Airplane and Dead also performed at Monterrey Pop in June 1967, and at Woodstock in August 1969. In fact, the 2 bands shared the same bill quite frequently, with Deadbase listing 50 such concerts from 1965 to 1970. Who knows how many more undocumented pairings also took place?   In 1967, as the Grateful Dead were working on their debut album, Jerry Garcia also spent time helping the Airplane produce their landmark 2nd album, Surrealistic Pillow. Garcia in fact, was the source of the album’s title, when he mentioned that, as a whole, the album sounded "as surrealistic as a pillow is soft." Although RCA, the Airplane’s record company would not acknowledge Garcia's considerable contributions to the album with a "Producer" credit, he is listed as "spiritual advisor."

1960s - #2:  For The Doors, the year 1967 began with the release in January of their self-titled debut album. The album would steadily rise up the charts, eventually reaching the #2 position, thanks to the single Light My Fire, released in April, which would make it all the way to the top spot! In September, the band released their 2nd album, Strange Days, which went to #3 on the billboard charts. While the album didn’t yield a single as successful as Light My Fire, both People Are Strange and Love Me Two Times made it into the Billboard Top 25. Also that month, The Doors gave a memorable performance of Light My Fire on The Ed Sullivan Show. Before the September 17 show, network executives asked that the word “higher” be removed in favor of "better." While the group initially agreed, once the band hit the stage, Jim Morrison left the original lyric in place. A furious Ed Sullivan canceled another six appearances that had been planned, banning The Doors from the show forever.  Two top 5 albums, a number 1 single, a legnedary if notorious appearance of Ed Sullivan - what more could you expect from a band's debut year.  How about  a concert at a high school?  The band was supposed to play at Western Connecticut State University, but due to construction at the college's auditorium, the show was moved to Danbury High.  Some 2,000 people packed into the 1,200 seat high school auditorium to hear The Doors, with the school principle having to remind folks not to smoke!  You can read more about that noght here.  Ths soundboard recording  - please note, its not perfect - captures that hard to believe night in Danbury on October 11, 1967, 57 years ago today.

Buffalo Springfield had broken up well before Woodstock, but its members are tied to the festival in countless ways. Both Neil Young and Stephen Stills, of course, played at Woodstock as part of CSNY. David Crosby, who sat in for Neil during the Springfield's set at Monterrey Pop, also hit the stage at Woodstock as part of CSNY.  Richie Furay and Jim Messina, who left the Springfield to form Poco, missed Woodstock when their new band turned down an invitation to play at the festival!  Instead, Poco played at a Long Beach high school because the pay was higher!

In any event, this soundboard recording captures Buffalo Springfield 2 years before Woodstock, on in Huntington Beach on August 11, 1967, 57 years ago today. In keeping with the Springfield tradition of constant fights between band members, while Stephen Stills, Richie Furay, Dewey Martin and Bruce Palmer were all present and accounted for, Doug Hastings sat in for Neil Young at this show.  Neil had left the band in early spring after a dispute with Stephen. Ironically, the next day, Buffalo Springfield had a 2nd show in Huntington, and Neil was back on stage, with the band unceremoniously dumping Hastings.

Six historic rock names who came together for all too brief a period to produce some of rock's finest music, only to break apart to spawn a dozen more rock legends. For a group that barely lasted 3 years, Buffalo Springfield has one of the most impressive legacies of any rock and roll band. Their 3 albums included such classics as Mr. Soul, Burned, Sit Down I Think I Love You, Bluebird, Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing, Special Care, Kind Woman and, of course, For What Its Worth. From the ashes of their break up arose such groups as CSN/CSNY, Poco, Loggins & Messina and Souther-Hillman-Furay band, not to mention the historic solo careers of Neil Young and Stephen Stills. This soundboard recording captures, Buffalo Springfield on April 29, 1967, 57 years ago today, at the Hollywood Bowl, on a bill headlined by The Supremes! NOTE AS OF MAY 6 - for those seeking the rest of the concert, it was just posted here

1960s - #2: On January 20, 1967, the Stones released the album Between The Buttons in the UK. The US edition would not be released until February with a different list of tracks.  Ironically, the US edition contained the 2 songs that would become the most well known from the album - Ruby Tuesday which topped the US charts, and Lets Spend The Night Together, which would the Stones would play on the Ed Sullivan show with the lyrics changed to "lets spend some time togegther" to appease the host's concerns about the approproayeness of the song for fsmily TV audiences. This soundboard recording captures the Stones on tour in Europe in support of the album, in Paris on April 11, 1967, 57 years ago today.
