Dire Straits - 1979-03-31 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

When Dire Straits released their self-titled debut album in February 1978, the music industry barely paid attention. Fortunately for the band, Karin Berg, working at Warner Brothers in New York did. With her backing, the band was booked to tour as the opening act for the Talking Heads. The success of that tour led to a US recording contract with Warner, followed by the release of their debut album worldwide. The disc would reach the top 10 in every country in Europe, while climbing to number 2 on the US charts. In early 1979, they launched their first headlining tour, playing 51 sold-out concerts over a 38-day period. Sultans of Swing, the single from their album which was released during that tour, scaled the charts to reach number four in the United States and number eight in the United Kingdom. This soundboard recording captures Dire Straits during that break though tour at the Old Waldorf in early in San Francisco on March 31, 1979, 34 years ago today. Download this one to capture the band as they took the world by storm, rising from obscurity to being nominated for 2 Grammy Awards (for Best New Artist and Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for Sultans Of Swing) in just 18 months!

The Police - 1979-03-29 - Rosyln, NY (FM)

As the decade of the 1970s came to a close, a host of punk and new wave bands rose to prominence. While many would reach the peak of their fame in the 1980s, they paid their dues in the 1970s. For example , in early 1979, The Police went on tour in North America in support of their debut album, Outlandos d’Amour. The tour kicked off on March 1 at the legendary Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles and ran until May 25, with the band criss-crossing the US and Canada. They often played 2 shows a night, and rarely took a day off. Given that the album had flopped when initially released, the band felt compelled to tour relentlessly in hopes of gaining exposure for themselves and airplay for their songs. The strategy seemed to work, as the album eventually climbed to the #23 position on the Billboard charts in the US, and rose all the way to the #2 position in the UK. In addition, 3 singles from the disc – Roxanne, Can’t Stand Losing You and So Lonely - charted in the top 20 in the UK in 1979. Roxanne also climbed to the #32 spot on the US Billboard charts. This FM broadcast captures the band on March 29 1979, 34 years ago today near the start of the tour that helped put them on the map.

McGuinn, Clark & HIllman - 1979-03-28 - Nashville, TN (FM)

Earlier this month we posted a 1978 show featuring the reunion of Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark, two former members of the Byrds. Later that year, a third former Byrd, Chris Hillman, joined McGuinn and Clark to record an album and tour. While the album was disappointing to critics because it lacked the signature sound of McGuinn’s 12 string, it did produce the top 40 hit, Don’t You Write Her Off. This FM broadcast captures the band in Nashville on March 28, 1979, 34 years ago today. Download this one to hear the closest thing we’ve seen to the original Byrds.

James Taylor - 1971-03-25 - Oakland, CA (SBD)

Much like the Van Morrison concert posted last year that my buddy Lakercrazy sent me, this James Taylor post also has a story behind. Laker’s original copy of this show came with notes indicating that it was July 5, 1972 from the Oakland Colosseum. The show been recorded for a live album that was never released. Those notes also indicated that the set list was incomplete. As Laker searched for the full show he uncovered that the date in the notes had to be wrong as the Oakland Coliseum hosted the Ice Follies on July 5, 1972. Further research resulted in 2 finds – a complete soundboard copy of the show and the correct date of March 25, 1971, 42 years ago today. As discussed last year in my January 25 post, the year 1971 was a prime one for JT.  He firmly established the soulful singer songwriter as a rising rock genre.  He released the album Sweet Baby James that years and was working on his next disc, Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon. Welcome to yet another KSAN-FM broadcast from the fabled Sunday night series “Live From The Plant” which made its debut in the 1970s. As I’ve mentioned in earlier posts, these broadcasts, from the Record Plant in Sausalito CA, featured the top names in rock, including the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, The Marshall Tucker Band, Steely Dan, Linda Ronstadt and Fleetwood Mac, just to name a few. This broadcast captures Peter Frampton on March 24, 1975, 38 years ago today, just prior to launching the tour that would make him a household name. As we all now know, portions of that 1975 tour would be released as the double album, Frampton Comes Alive, which would climb to the top of the Billboard Charts, sell over 6 million copies, and be voted album of the year by the readers of Rolling Stone. When Frampton played the Record Plant, however, he had no inkling of the phenomena that his double live disc would become. Rather, he was simply looking to promote his 1974 release, Something’s Happening in order to give his solo career a much needed boost. The set list features several of the tunes that would be come staples of rock radio after the release of the live album, including Baby, I Love Your Way, I Wanna Go To The Sun,(I'll Give You) Money and of course, Do You Feel Like We Do. The 1970s were a time of transformation for rock and roll, and now man was more of a chameleon than David Bowie.  Early in the decade he took the stage as Ziggy Stardust, turning his concerts into dramatic and  shocking theatrical performances.  Late in the decade he abandoned the pomp and circumstance of the Ziggy days for a minimalist approach on a series of albums with Brian Eno and Iggy Pop. Midway through the 1970s, he became the Thin White Duke, a character from the title track of the album Station To Station, released in 1976. Visually, the character was an extension of Thomas Jerome Newton, the extraterrestrial being he portrayed in the film The Man Who Fell to Earth that same year. Emotionally, the character was hollow, reflecting Bowie's addiction to cocaine that left him almost lifeless inside. Bowie's addiction, however, did not stymie his ability to make music, as the Station To Station went to #3 on the Billboard charts, and received strong critical reviews from Rolling Stone and Robert Christgau. Stephen Stills - 1972-03-22 - Amsterdam, Netherlands  (SBD)

In the early 1970's, in the advent of the first CSNY breakup, Stephen Stills formed the band, Manassas, along with an all star supporting cast, including  Chris Hillman, Al Perkins, Calvin "Fuzzy" Samuels, Paul Harris, Dallas Taylor, and Joe Lala.  The band released a double album in April 1972, which reached number 4 on the Billboard charts and included some of Stephen's best known tunes, such as Jet Set (Sigh), Colorado, Johnny's Garden and It Doesn't Matter. The band did did not last long, however, ironically breaking up soon after CSNY were reunited on stage at a Manassas concert in October 1973 at Winterland in San Francisco. Their short tenure means bootlegs are scarce, but fortunately we have this soundboard recording from March 22, 1972, 41 years ago today, from the legendary Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.  Download this one to hear Stills and Manassas perform tunes from their debut album, as well as a host of CSNY and Buffalo Springfield classics.

Eric Clapton - 1978-03-21 - Savannah, GA (SBD)

For Eric Clapton, the 1970s were the tale of two era's. Early in the decade, while leading Derek and The Dominos, and struggling with heroin addiction, he released his masterpiece, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Later in the decade, he released a series of successful solo albums while battling addiction to alcohol. In between, he spent 3 years in isolation in his home in the UK,  battling drugs and pining for Patty Harrison, wife of best friend, George Harrison, and the subject of the Layla album. This soundboard from March 21, 1978, 35 years ago today, finds EC on tour in support of his solo album Slowhand, the title taken from his well known nickname. The album was both a critical and commercial success, reaching #2 on the Billboard charts and drawing comparisons to his masterful 461 Ocean Boulevard disc, which had launched his comeback from the years in isolation. Tunes from the disc such as The Core, Lay Down Sally, Cocaine and Wonderful Tonight became standards in his live shows for decades to come.  Download this one to hear EC on the comeback trail in the late 1970s!

Allman Brothers Band - 1971-03-20 - New Orleans (SBD)

Four years ago in March 2009, the Allman Brothers were in the midst of an historic 15 show run at the Beacon Theatre in NY celebrating the band's 40th anniversary. Each night was filled with great music and amazing guests, such as Bruce Hornsby, Levon Helm, Sheryl Crow, Buddy Guy, Los Lobos, Kid Rock, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir, just to name a few. Most notable of all, however, was the man who sat in with the Allmans on March 19 and March 20, namely the one and only Slowhand, Eric Clapton. Almost 40 years earlier, Eric's collaboration with Duane Allman helped produce the masterpiece known as Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs. Now Eric stood on stage with Greg and the rest of the Allman Brothers Band, lighting up the Beacon with inspired versions of Allman classics and songs off the Layla album. McGuinn & Clark - 1978-03-19 - Bottom Line, NY (FM)

The 1970s was a time of transformation in rock music. Not only did new genres of music emerge and flourish, but also long time bands reinvented themselves. The Jefferson Airplane, for example, became The Jefferson Starship. Fleetwood Mac transformed from a blues band to one of the founders of the album oriented rock sound.  The Bee Gees abandoned pop music to become leaders of the disco nation.  While their change may not have been as dramatic as the 3 just mentioned, the Byrds also evolved during the late 1970s. After the band broke up in 1973, former members worked on and off with each other throughout the rest of the decade. In 1979, 3 of them, McGuinn, Clark and Hillman formally reunited to record an album and tour. The seeds of that partnership were sown in early 1978, when McGuinn and Clark played a series of acoustic shows together at small venues such as this concert at The Bottom Line on March 19, 1978, 35 years ago today.  Download this FM broadcast to hear the duo play tunes from their days with the Byrds, as well as preview, Don't You Write Her Off, a song with which MCH would score a top 40 hit in 1979!

Dave Mason - 1978-03-18 - Ontario, CA (SBD)

While the rock festival may have originated in the decade of the 1960s with the Monterrey Pop festival in June 1967, many of the most famous festivals actually took place in the 1970s. For example, the largest attended festival in US history, with over 600,000 concert goers on hand to hear the Allman Brothers, The Band and The Grateful Dead,, took place in August 1973 at Watkins Glen. Beginning in 1974, Knebworth in the UK became the site an almost annual outdoor festival, hosting such acts as Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. Ontario Motor Speedway in California actually hosted 2 festivals in the 1970s, Cal Jam 1 in April 1974 and then its successor, Cal Jam 2 on March 18, 1978, 35 years ago today. Cal Jam 2 reflected the rise of a host of new hard rocking musical acts, with performances from Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Heart, and Mahogany Rush. Dave Mason also appeared on the bill, with his set focusing more on his 1970s solo material than on his music with Traffic. Led Zeppelin - 1975-03-17 - Seattle, WA (SBD)

During the decade of the 1970s. one band towered above all others - the mighty Led Zeppelin. Their 1975 tour found the band at the peak of their powers, both in the studio and on stage.  As the tour launched, Led Zep released the double album Physical Graffiti, which went to number 1 on the charts in both the US and UK. The disc also received strong critical reviews. Billboard magazine gave the disc 5 stars while Rolling stone wrote that Physical Graffiti was "the band's Tommy, Beggar's Banquet and Sgt. Pepper rolled into one." On stage, after some early issues due to Page having suffered a broken finger and Plant contacting the flu, the band rounded into form, playing one memorable show after another. In fact, by the end of the run, Plant proclaimed "this has been our most successful tour on every level and I had a great time all the way through." The biggest band of the decade requires more than just 1 post to showcase their talents.  So, we'll bring you 3 shows from right near the end of this incredible tour. Bob Dylan - 1978-03-15 - Brisbane, Australia (SBD)

On February 20, 1978, Bob Dylan launched his first world tour since the 1960s, with a series of shows in Japan. Dylan has not performed live since spring 1976 when the 2nd leg of The Rolling Thunder Revue Tour ended. During the year long run, Dylan would perform 114 shows in Japan, the Far East, Europe and the US, for a total audience of over two million people. He was accompanied by an eight piece band, as well as 3 back up singers. Unfortunately, reviews for Dylan's concerts were less than stellar. For example, when he brought the the tour to the United States in September 1978, he press described the look and sound of the shows as a "Las Vegas style lounge act".  The tour also became infamous for the associated live release, Bob Dylan at Budokan, which became the first in seemingly endless series of often mocked and parodied "live at Budokan" concert albums that seemed to emerge from the the late 1970s. Perhaps the less than stellar reviews had their impact on Dylan, as soon after this tour he became a born again Christian. In any event, this soundboard recording captures Dylan early on during the tour on March 15, 1978, 35 years ago today, in Australia.  Download this one and decide for yourself whether this tour was Dylan reinventing himself, or simply a chance to collect a paycheck to cover the costs of his recent divorce.

Rolling Stones - 1971-03-13 - Leeds, UK (SBD)

In March 1971, the Rolling Stones launched a 14 day, 17 show tour of the united Kingdom, their first live shows in their homeland since 1966, excluding the Hyde Park show on July 5, 1969 in the wake of Brian Jones' death.   Ironically, it would become known as the Goodbye Britain tour, as on the opening night the band announced they were becoming tax exiles, moving to the South of France to avoid the UK's onerous taxes on the wealthy (as George Harrison had written about in the Beatles tune, Taxman).  The set list, about 15 songs each night, included several tunes from the soon to be released masterpiece, Stick Fingers, including Dead Flowers, Wild Horses, Bitch and Brown Sugar.  This soundboard recording (which was also broadcast on BBC radio) captures the band on the next to last night of the tour, March 13, 1971, 40 years ago today, at the University of Leeds. While its missing the first 2 songs of the night, -- Jumping Jack Flash and Live With Me -- this tape finds the Stones in peak form, with Mick Taylor's guitar prominently featured and Nicky Hopkins adding support on keyboards. This is a show definitely worth adding to your collection!

Bruce Springsteen - 1974-03-09 - Houston, TX (FM)

Bruce Springsteen became more than a rock and roll artist in October 1975, when he made the covers of Newsweek and Time in the same week (go here to see those covers). They proclaimed him the future of rock and roll, and they just may have been right. He had just released Born To Run in August 1975, an album that consistently appears in the top ten whenever anyone goes to rank the greatest rock discs of all time. You all know the story since then -- an almost 40 year legacy of incredible songs, endless concert performances, and dedicated fans. This post, though, goes back before the hype, before the legend, capturing Bruce in a radio broadcast from Houston, Texas on March 9, 1974, 39 years ago today. Download this one and get a glimpse of the man before he became not the 2nd coming of Bob Dylan, but the 1st and only incarnation of Bruuuuce!

The Clash - 1980-03-08 - Capitol Theatre, Passaic NJ (SBD)

Another one, like the Eagles post a few days ago,  where we're going to cheat just a bit on our 1970's theme as we drift three months into 1980. That said, we again have a very good reason as The Clash's performance at the Capitol Theatre on March 8, 1980, 33 years ago today, features tunes from one of the most iconic albums of the 1970s. Recorded in the summer of 1979, and released on December 14 of that year, London Calling is often hailed as the greatest album of the punk/new wave era. Rolling Stone ranked it 8th of its list of the 500 best albums of all time. Robert Christgau described London Calling as "warm, angry, and thoughtful, confident, melodic, and hard-rocking" and called it "the best double-LP since Exile on Main Street."  The cover photo, which  features Paul Simonon smashing his bass, a perfect punk rock moment, was shot at The Palladium in New York on September 21, 1979, a concert we posted here.  Download this one to hear The Clash start 1980, as they ended the prior decade, living up to their claim to be  "The Only Band That Matters".

Santana - 1973-03-07 - Charlotte, NC (SBD)

When Santana went on tour in early 1973, the band and their leader were both going through periods of change. The band's most recent album, Caravanserai, released in late 1973, was departure from Santana's earlier work. The album featured more of a jazz sound, as opposed to the mix of rock and salsa which highlighted prior albums. When the band finished recording the album, Gregg Rolie and Neil Schon both left the group, going off to launch Journey. In the wake of their departures, Carlos formed a new version of the band, with Armando Peraza and Chepito Areas on percussion, Doug Rauch on bass, Michael Shrieve on drums, and Tom Coster and Richard Kermode on keyboards. Santana's personal life also was in transition at this time. He married Deborah King, he daughter of the late blues singer and guitarist, Saunders King.  He and Deborah became disciples of Sri Chinmoy, an Indian philosopher and spiritualist. Carlos was given the spiritual name Devadip, meaning the lamp, light and eye of God. Further changes would come later in the decade, as Santana's music would evo;ve to having a more AOR sound. Through all the change, however, one thing remained constant, Santana's ability to light up a concert arena. That fact is evident in this soundboard recording from Charlotte on March 7, 1973, 40 years ago today. This show is just 4 months prior to the Japanese concerts that were recorded for the legendary live album, Lotus, and features a similar set list. Pink Floyd - 1972-03-06 - Tokyo, Japan (FM)

In February 1972, Pink Floyd played 4 shows at the Rainbow Theater in London that gave the British press their opportunity to hear 45 minutes of new music that the band had been developing. This suite of tunes, originally entitled Eclipse, would eventually comprise the legendary album Dark Side of The Moon.  The Rainbow concerts took place over a year before the album wad released, but the reviews provided a preview of what was to come. Michael Wale of The Times described the piece as "...bringing tears to the eyes. It was so completely understanding and musically questioning." Derek Jewell of The Sunday Times wrote "The ambition of the Floyd's artistic intention is now vast." So too would be the success of Dark Side of The Moon, as the album would sell over 50 million copies worldwide and remain on the Billboard Charts in the US for an almost incomprehensible 741 weeks spanning 15 years from 1973 to 1988.  A few weeks after the Rainbow shows, Pink Floyd played a series of concerts in Japan, where they continued to showcase the new Dark Side of The Moon material. This FM broadcast captures them in Tokyo on March 6, 1972, 41 years ago today,.

Stevie Wonder - 1973-03-04 - Berkeley, CA (SBD)

It would be hard to argue that any black artist had more influence on rock music in the mid 1970s than Stevie Wonder.  In fact, Wonder may have been the most influential musician period, regardless of race, color or gender. In late 1972, he released the album Talking Book, which went to #3 on the Billboard charts and in 1973, yielded two #1 singles, Superstition and You Are The Sunshine Of My Life. Over the next 4 years, Wonder would release the albums Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale, and Songs In The Key of Life.  The first of that trio would hit #4 on the Billboard charts, while the last 2 would both climb to #1.  All 3 would win the Grammy for Album of The Year! Those discs produced 7 top 20 singles, including 3 more #1's, You Haven't Done Nothing, I Wish and Sir Duke. This soundboard recording captures Wonder just as You Are The Sunshine Of My Life was being released,  on March 4, 1973, 4 decades go today. Elvis Costello - 1978-03-03 - Brookville, NY (FM)

At about the same time Elvis Presley left this earth for Rock & Roll heaven, another Elvis began his rise to prominence. One of the angry young men of the punk rock movement, Elvis Costello released his first album, My Aim Is True in July 1977 in the UK, however, due to distribution issues, the disc would not be released in the US until March 1978. That didn't stop Cosello from developing a following in the US.  In December 1977, he was asked to appear on Saturday Night Live as a replacement for the Sex Pistols. Scheduled to perform Less Than Zero, Elvis stopped after just a few bars, then launched into Radio Radio, a song he had been specifically asked not to play. He cemented his reputation as a rebellious punk rocker with the incident, but also also earned  a 10 year ban from the show! Elvis returned to the US in early 1978 to play a tour of small clubs and college campuses. This WLIR-FM broadcast captures Costello on March, 3, 1978, a quarter century ago today, on the campus of CW Post in Brookville, NY.  Download this one to hear Elvis play tunes from his debut album, as well as preview songs such as Pump It Up amd No Action from his soon to be released second disc, This Year's Model. By the way, I believe Elvis dedicates the encore, Miracle Man, to his tour bus driver, who somehow got the band to the gig despite a terrible snowstorm.

Elvis Presley - 1974-03-03 – Houston, TX (SBD)

The 1970s would see the return of Elvis to the top of the charts, followed by a self indulgent drug filled fall from grace that would end in his tragic death in 1977.  In the early part of the decade, Elvis was still in peak form when he took the stage. On March 1, 1974, The King launched a tour of the South, in which he would play 24 shows in 20 days, without a single day off. His 2nd stop on the tour was the Houston Astrodome, then known as the 8th wonder of the world, for 2 shows on March 3, 1974, 38 years ago today. The King was the featured entertainer for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the largest show of its kind in the world. Well, those rodeo fans must have loved their Elvis, for over 44.000 fans attended each of the 2 shows that day, setting a 1 day Astrodome attendance record of 88,149. Speaking of large crowds, Elvis was accompanied by one even when offstage, as his entourage took up 32 rooms at the Shamrock Hilton and another 25 at the Astroworld Hotel! This soundboard recording captures the afternoon show from at the Astrodome on March 3. As you listen, think about the way the show ended - Elvis climbed into back of a pickup and drove him around the perimeter of the stadium so fans could reach out and slap hands with him. Then the truck pulled in to a tunnel and Elvis was gone, just as the voice came on the PA and intoned those legendary words “Ladies and gentlemen … Elvis has left the building.”
