In October 2006, The Who released the album Endless Wire, their first studo release in 2 dozen years, since It's Hard in 1982. The disc received generally positive reviews from music critics and debuted at #7 on the Billboard album charts in the US.  The band went on tour in support of the album, playing dates both in Europe and Noprth America.  This soundboard recording cpatures them during that run, in Phoeniz on February 28, 2007, 15 years ago today.

Southside Johnny - 2016-02-27 - Asbury Park, NJ (FM)

The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. While Southside never rose to the prominence that Springsteen achieved, the band remained a vibrant live force in the 1990s and beyond, touring almost non stop! This FM broadcast cpatures Southside returining to the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park, a venue where the band started out, on Fberuary 27,2016, 6 years ago today.

Plant & Page - 1998-02-26 - Katowice, Poland (SBD)

Robert Plant and Jimmy Page spent over a decade together as part of one of rock’s greatest bands, the mighty Led Zeppelin, before the band's demise in 1980 after the death of drummer John Bonham. In the mid 1990s, almost 15 years after Led Zep dissolved, Plant and Page reunited for an MTv Unplugged special, which received rave reviews. As a result, the duo not only released the Unplugged sessions as an album entitled No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, but also agreed to tour in 1995. After that tour, the two went back into the studio and recorded another album, entitled Walking Into Clarksdale. The title referred to a town in the Mississippi Delta, a home of Delta blues music that influenced the duo. Released in April 1998, the album went to #8 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbed all the way to #3 in the UK. Plant and Page went back on tour in support of Walking Into Clarksdale, touring North America and Europe in the summer and fall of 1998. This soundboard recording captures the duo durng that tour, in Poland on February 26, 1998, 2 dozen years ago today, At the tour’s end, however, Robert Plant decided he wanted to pursue some new musical directions. He and Page parted on good terms, each to return to his own solo career

John Hiatt - 1994-02-24 - Chicago, IL (FM)

If you've been a regular visitor to So Many Roads, you'll know that I'm a big fan of John Hiatt. While his 1987 and 1988 albums Bring The Family and Slow Turning are his best known, his 1993 disc, Perfectly Good Guitar, may just be my favorite. Almost every one of the album's 12 tracks is worth playing again and again, with the title tune, Cross My Fingers, Straight Outta Time, Loving A Hurricane, and Buffalo River Home being true standouts. In fact, that last tune, with its catchy tune playing counterpoint to its saddening lyrics, just may be Hiatt's best. This FM broadcast captures Hiatt about 5 months after the release of Perfectly Good Guitar, in Chicago, on February 24, 1994, 28 years ago today.

Grateful Dead - 1970-02-23 - Austin, TX (SBD)

After the psychedelic live trip that was the year 1969, the Grateful Dead used 1970 to hone their song writing, vocal harmonies, and studio recordings. Two of the band’s finest albums, Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty, were released in 1970. In fact, legend has it that Jerry Garcia had made an arrangement that in return for his playing pedal steel guitar on Teach Your Children, CSNY would teach the members of the Grateful Dead how to sing harmony for those albums. In any event, just because the Dead spent significant time in the studio in 1970 doesn't mean they didn’t go out on the road. In fact, the band played 142 live shows in 1970! This soundboard captures the Dead on February 23, 1970, 52 years ago today, in Austin, featuring a set list that clearly demonstrates the band's transiition - 2 electric sets that reflect back to 1969 and an acoustic one featuring tunes from the upcoming Workingman's Dead disc.

James Taylor  - 1970-02-22 - Worcester, MA (SBD)

In late summer 1969, James Taylor broke his hands and feet in a motorcycle accident on Martha's Vineyard. The injuries, however, did not stop him from writing songs. In fact, the tunes he penned that fall would comprise his breakthrough album, the landmark disc entitled Sweet Bay James. Released in February 1970, Sweet Baby James would rise to #3 on the Billboard charts. So would the single from the disc, Fire and Rain, a song about Taylor's experience in psychiatric institutions and the suicide of his friend, Suzanne Schnerr. Sweet Baby James received a Grammy nomination for Album of The Year, and has been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Rock Albums of All Time, clocking in at #103 on that list. This soundboard recording captures Taylor in concert in Worcester e on February 22 1970, 52  years ago today, just about the time when Sweet Baby James was released.

In March 1997, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody left the Allman Brothers Band to focus full time on Gov't Mule. They went into the studio to record the Mule's 2nd album entitled Dose, which would be released in February 1998. The album was much darker in tone than the band's initial effort. Dose included the songs Thelonius Beck and Birth Of The Mule, which ere tributes to jazz musicians Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis, respectively. This soundboard recording captures Govt Mule right before Haynes and Woody departed from the Allmans,on February 20, 1997, a quarter century ago today.

In February 1999, Elton John launched a solo acoustic your which would encompass 51 shows in North America and Europe. My wife and I were fortunate to catch Elton mear the end of that tour, on October 15, 1999 at Madison Square Garden on New York. Elton played over 2 dozen songs in a show that lasted over 3 hours, with no breaks, making the 20,000 seat arena feel like an intimate piano bar. Truly one of the most memorable shows of the over 160 concerts I have seen ovver the last 46 years. This excellen t audience recording captures Sir Elton early on in that tour, in Roanoke on February 19, 1999, 23 years ago today.

Any time I post Chicago from the mid 1970s, it reminds me of high school. You see, my high school class debated between calling our Senior Prom either Harmony (after the Elton John song) or Colour My World (inspired by Chicago's tune). I believe Harmony won out, but as the Wikipedia entry on Colour My World states, the tune "became a popular "slow-dance" song at high school proms and university dances during the 1970s." My prom was no exception. In any event, this soundboard recording from Munich from February 18, 1977, 45 yeasts ago today, captures Chicago in the band's prime, prior to the tragic death of guitarist and vocalist Terry Kath. Chicago's reputation as a rock band was sullied in the 80's and 90's as the group veered more and more into soft rock ballads. Download this show and you'll be reminded that at one point in their career, Chicago was a damn fine rock and roll band.

In November 1995, Bruce Springsteen released the album The Ghost of Tom Joad, his 11th studio album but just his 2nd acoustic one.  The disc took its titlr from a character in Steinback's Grapes of Wrath, Tom Joad, who faced the economic hardships of the Great Depression. In that vein, the disc is filled with tunes that reflect upon the struggles of the poor and the eroding middle class in the 1990s. Springsteen launched a solo acoustic tour in support of the disc, a dramtic change from his "full tilt boogie" concerts with the E-Street Band. This tour was darker, quiter and more introspective. This soundboard or excellent audience recording captures Bruce during the European leg of that run, in Germany of February 17, 1996, 36 years ao today.

Robert Hunter - 1980-02-16 - St. Louis, MO (SBD)

Robert Hunter, who wrote or co-wrote many of the Grateful Dead's best known tunes (Uncle John's Band, Truckin, Friend Of The Devil and Dark Star, just to name a few), started his association with Jerry Garcia in the early 1960's, when the two played together in a folk/blue grass bands. In addition to writing with Garcia, Hunter also penned numerous tunes for his own albums. In the 70's and 80's, Jerry Garcia Band shows often featured Hunter as the lead-in act. In fact, the first 2 times I saw Jerry, March 17, 1978 and March 1, 1980, his song writing partner opened for him. This soundboard recording is from just 2 weeks prior to that 1980 show, on February 7, 1980, 42 years ago today.

In early 1980, The Police were riding a wave of success both in the UK and the US. Their 2nd album, Regatta de Blanc, reached number 1 in the UK, as did the singles Message In A Bottle and Walking On The Moon. In the US, the title track won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental. This FM broadcast captures the band on tour in support of Regatta de Blanc in Tokyo on February 15, 1980, 42 years ago today.

In February 1973, NBC television launched The Midnight Special, which ran until 1981.  The show was one of a trio of late night shows during that time, the others being In Concert and Don Kirschner's Rock Concert, that featured rock artists performing live. Legendary DJ Wolfman Jack was the announcer fo The Midnight Special, and occaionally also served as the  host.  This episode of the show, recorded on February 14, 1974, 4 dozen years ago tioday, features The Kinks.

Believe it or not, the 2nd concert I ever attended was Hall & Oates on June 23, 1977 at the Garden State (now the PNC Bank) Arts Center in Holmdel NJ. I was a big fan of the tune She's Gone, which when re-released in 1976, went to #7 on the Billboard charts. I also really enjoyed the songs Sara Smile, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts, and Rich Girl, which became the duo's first #1 hit. I saw the band for a 2nd time on September 14, 1978, also at the Arts Center. At that point, the duo's sound started to take on more of a pop music feel, and I lost interest in them. Despite my lack of enthusiasm for the new direction, the band soared to new heights, scoring five #1 hits in the early 1980s. This FM broadcast captures the band a few months before the forst time I saw them live, in Amsterdam on February 13, 1977, 45 years ago today.

The disc was comprised of 11 new tracks, all written by Van The Man, his first album of all original material since Back on Top in 1999. Keep It Simple debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at #10 which incredibly, made it the highest charting album of his long storied career. This FM broadcast captures him in London on February12, 2008, 14 years ago today, playing a set hat previews tunes from his soom to be re;eased disc.

On September 29, 1997, the Rolling Stones released Bridges to Babylon, their last studio album of the 20th century. While the album met with mixed reviews, it still climbed to #3 of the Billboard charts in the US and certified platinum by November. The Stones launched a year long world wide tour in support of the album, announcing their plans at a press conference underneath the Brooklyn Bridge! The Bridges to Babylon Tour would become the largest Rolling Stones tour to date, exceeding the sales of their record-breaking 1994-1995 Voodoo Lounge Tour. Estimates are that over 4.5 million people attended the 108 shows played during the tour. Along the way, the Stones visited 25 countries on 4 continents. The band followed that up in 1999 with the No Security tour, in support of the album of the same name, a live disc featuring songs from the Bridges to Babylon run. The No Security tour launched on January 26, 1999 and would feature 43 shows, all is arenas seating 20,000 or less, This soundboard recording captures the Stones on night 2 of the tour, in Sacramento, on January 27, 1999, 18 years ago today.

When your debut album goes to #3 on the Billboard charts, and wins 3 Grammys, as Tuesday Night Music Club did, you've established quite a standard for future releases. For Sheryl Crow, however, that hardly seemed to be an issue. In 1996, her self-titled second disc went to # 6 on the charts, earned her 2 more Grammys, and included such hits as Everyday Is A Winding Road, If It Makes You Happy and Hard To Make A Stand. The album also received significant critical acclaim. For example, the Village Voice ranked it at #26 in its list of the best albums of 1996. Rolling Stone selected it as one of the essential albums of the 1990s while also naming it the 44th greatest album of all time by a female artist. This soundboard recording captures Sheryl on February 9, 1997, a quarter century ago today, on  tour in support of her 2nd album. While the tape only captures part of the concert, it includes guest appearances by Emmylou Harris, as well as Jakob Dylan of the Wallflowers, who were leading in for Sheryl on this tour.

Spin Doctors - 1990-02-08 - New York, NY (FM)

In August 1991, the Spin Doctors released their debut album Pocket Full Of Kryptonite, but it barely received any commercial or critical notice. It took almost a year before folks picked up on the album, bolstered by MTv playing videos of Two Princes and Little Miss Can't be Wrong. Sales suddenly took off, with the album certifying gold by September 1992, and reaching triple platinum status by June 1993. The disc peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts, and the two singles mentioned previously both cracked the top 20. By the way, the album got its title from a line from its opening track, Jimmy Olsen's Blues, which didn't chart when originally released, but eventually cracked the Billboard Top 100 after the band's big commercial breakthrough. This FM Broadcast captures the band  about 2 years prior to their commercial breakthrough,, in New York, on February 8, 1990, 32 years ago today.

While MTv Unplugged had aired since 1989, it became “the show to do” in 1991 thanks to Paul McCartney’s appearance, which was later released as an album. Show producer Alex Coletti went on to say that had McCartney not released the disc, the concept would have never gained the cult status that it went on to enjoy. The show received another boost in 1992, when Eric Clapton’s taped his January 16 performance for the Unplugged album, featuring an acoustic reworking of Layla. The disc sold 10 million copies and earned 6 Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Rock Male Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song. In 1993, Neil Young added his name to the list of legends playin Unplugged, recording a session on February 7, 1993, 39 years ago today, featuring tunes from his 1992 album, Harvest Moon,  Nei's Unplugged session was also officially released, but this soundboard recording captures the 4 songs not inlcluded on that disc!

Of all the band's to play Woodstock, few got as significant a career boost as Santana did. Their incendiary performance was featured in the movie and helped propel sales of their debut album, which would be released on August 30, 1969, to #4 on the Billboard charts. A little over a year after Woodstock, Sanatan would their 2nd album, entitled Abraxas. The disc would climb to #1 on the billboard charts and spawn two of Santana’s best know singles, Black Magic Woman and Oye Como Va, which went to #4 and #13 respectively on the charts.  This FM broadcast captures them between those 2 milestones, in Berkeley, On February 6, 1970, 52 years ago today.
