The 1970s - #6: Our last post for April  features Traffic, on April 30, 1970, 45 years ago today. This performance took place just a few months before the release of the album John Barleycorn Must Die, a disc which started as a Steve Winwood solo project but led to reuniting Traffic as a trio, including Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood. Traffic unveiled much of the material from that album at this intimate performance hosted by legendary BBC DJ, John Peel. Download this FM broadcast of that show one to hear just the 3rd performances by the re-united Traffic!

Download Hosts

I know that it can be frustrating to try and download a show, only to find the host doesn't work for you, or is extremely slow.

That said, I simply do not have the time to upload shows to multiple hosts, or split folders into smaller pieces to take advantage of some of the faster hosts. And I simply can't spend the money plan to pay for faster access or more storage space.

So, here's how we are handling all uploads:
  • Any show under 200 mb goes up on zippyshare.
  • Anything between 200 and 300 goes on sendspace.
  • Anything over 300 goes on filefactory
Is it a perfect system? No. But given the fact I have a life beyond this blog, it's the best I can do. Those 3 hosts work for me and are free. I apologize in advance if you have some issues with certain shows, but it's simply impossible to provide universal access to every show given technology and time constraints.

Thanks for understanding. Enjoy the tunz.

1980s - #6: In 1984, while working on their forthcoming album Unforgettable Fire, U2 penned not one, but two tunes in homage to Martin Luther King - Pride (In The Name Of Love) and MLK.  Bono was inspired by a recent book he had read about the civil right leader, Let The Trumpet Sound: The Life of Martin Luther King, Jr. by written by Stephen B. Oates. Pride with its reference to King's assassination (early morning, April 4, shots ring out in the Memphis sky) is an anthem of hope, and has become once of U2's best know and most respected tunes, MLK, is more of a reassuring lullaby, a reminder that's King's work and message will prevail in troubling times. Both songs are featured in the set list for this concert from April 29, 1987, 28 years ago today, as captured in this soundboard (or excellent audience) recording. A  final note - in January 2004, almost 2 decades after the release of the album Unforgettable Fire, Bono and U2 would be recognized by Coretta Scott King and the King Center in Atlana, Georgia for the MLK tribute songs on the album. Bono traveled to Atlanta to receive the honor at the annual “Salute to Greatness” Awards Dinner,  He also attended a number of related events to honor what would have been Martin Luther King Jr.’s 75th birthday.

May's Theme At So Many Roads

Well, the first Saturday of May brings us the Kentucky Derby, the first jewel in horse racing's Triple Crown.  So, with that for inspiration, our theme in May will be Daily Doubles and Trifectas.  We'll bring you 2 or 3 shows that are related by some common tread, such as the same venue, a common band member, the same tour, etc.  And don't be surprised if we get a little creative with the theme that links our double and triple plays!

Enjoy the tunz!

Neil Young - 1999-04-28 - Chicago IL (Ex Aud)

The 1990s - #6: On April 22, 1999, I saw Neil Young live at the Theater at Madison Square Garden,. The show was a solo acoustic performance, part of the An Evening with Neil Young Tour launched on March 2 of that year and ran until June 2. Over the course of the approximately 40 shows, Neil performed a total of 68 different songs. This excellent audience recording captures Neil a few nights after I saw him, in Chicago, on April 28, 1999, 16 years ago today.

The 1970s - #5: Some times when I'm doing research for these posts, I learn something new about the band, or one of their albums or songs.  Other times, I gain new insight into what was transpiring in the music world at the time of the concert covered in the post.  Every now and then, I learn something new about the venue where the show was held.  This is one of those posts where the concert location takes center stage.  I had mentioned in an earlier post (Jefferson Airplane from 1970-05-01), that SUNY Stony Brook in Long Island NY was a hot bed for rock and roll concerts in the early 1970s.  Yet despite having written those words, I don't think I fully understood what they meant until I started doing some research on this Allman Brothers show.  In addition to this concert on April 28, 1970, 41 years ago today, the Allman's played Stony Brook 3 more times that summer and fall, on July 10, July 26 and October 23.  Can you imagine 4 opportunities to see Duane, Greg and the entire Allman's contingent 4 times in 6 months at small college campus right outside New York City?  I'm betting prices were under $5 a ticket!  Oh well, if we can't bring back those intimate shows at bargain basement prices, at least we can still enjoy the incredible music, by downloading great bootlegs such as this soundboard recording!

The 2010s - #6: On April 4, 2013, Fleeword Mac took to the road for the first time in 3 years. The tour, entitled Fleetwood Mac Live would span 66 shows in 14 countries in North America and Europe. The April 18, 2013 stop in Boston, Massachusetts was one of the first major performances given in the city following the Boston Marathon bombings three days earlier. The tour, may be most notable, however, for the last two London O2 Arena shows, where Christine McVie played with the band for the first time since 1998. She would rejoin the band on a full time basis for their 2014/2015 tour. This soundboard recording captures Fleetwood Mac early on in their 2013 tour, on April 28, 2013, 2 years ago today, in St. Paul.

The 1980s - #5: When they released of their self titled debut album in July 1983, and served as the lead in for U2 that same summer, The Alarm were quickly heralded as perhaps the next "big thing". The similarities in their style to that io U2 brought on the inevitable comparisons, which may have been simply unfair to a band just starting out. In any event, The Alarm never quite reached the heights U2 did, but they most certainly produced some fine tunes, including The Stand, 68 Guns and Rain In The Summertime (my favorite), just to name a few. This FM broadcast captures The Alarm on tour 5 years after their debut, on April 27, 1988, 27 years ago today.

1960s - #6: On January 12, 1969, Led Zeppelin released their self-titled debut album, and rock and roll was never the same again. Over the next 10 years, Led Zep would become one of the immortal bands in rock history, as their fusion of rock and the blues launched what would eventually become known as heavy metal. Their first album featured songs that would become staples of their live performances for years to come, including Good Times Bad Times, Dazed and Confused, Black Mountain Side, and Communication Breakdown. While at the time, the album received largely negative reviews, today, critics are almost unanimous that the album was one of the finest debut discs ever recorded. The Times in London ranked it as the 41st greatest album of all time, while Rolling Stone magazine placed it in the #29 position on its list of the top 500 best albums. This soundboard recording, captures the band on tour in the US in support of it debut disc at the last of 4 night sin San Francisco, on April 27, 1969, 46 years ago today.

1960s - #5: The New Musical Express (better known as the NME) is a popular music magazine in the United Kingdom which has been published weekly since March 1952. On November 14, 1952, taking its cue from the U.S. magazine Billboard, NME created the first UK Singles Chart. During the 1960s, the paper championed the new British groups emerging at the time. From 1963 to 1966, NME produced an annual Poll Winners Concert, at which bands voted the best by the paper's readers would perform and accept their award. The shows were filmed, edited and then broadcast on British television. The 1964 Poll Winners Concert was held on April 26 of that year, 51 years ago today. In addition to such acts as The Hollies, Gerry and The Pacemakers, and Manfred Mann, both The Rolling Stones and The Beatles performed! The Beatles, the night's big winners, closed the show with a 5 song set.  Murray The K, the US disc jockey often called the 5th Beatle, introduced the Fab Four, and actor Roger Moore (yes - James Bond!) presented them with their awards! My thanks to my friend Andy (you can meet him at the chat box at D&P's Tunz World) for this incredible soundboard recording of an historic night!

The 1980s - #4: In 1988 and 1989, Elton was continually on the road performing, as his Reg Strikes Back tour rolled right into his World Tour. he even joined Eric Clapton for several shows in Japan in late 1988 (but that's the subject of another post). The tours were plagued by cancellations and rumors of ill health, which turned out to be true, as in 1990, Sir Elton checked himself into rehab. In later interviews, Elton often would describe 1989 as the worst year of his life. Yet, amidst the personal trials and tribulations, Elton still could play and perform with the best of them. This FM broadcast from April 26, 1989, 26 years ago today, captures Elton in Verona, Italy, playing songs from the Reg Strikes back disc, as well as classics dating back to his first album. Perhaps the final song of the night best sums up a difficult year for Sir Elton - I'm Still Standing!

Jackson arrived in the US for his first tour at just about the same time the album hit record stores. This FM broadcast captures Joe in Washington DC fon April 26, 1979, 3 dozen years ago today.

The 2010s - #5: Folks forget, but in the 1960s and early 1970s, few artists had more chart success than Frankie Valli. First with the Four Seasons, and later as a solo artist, Frankie had 39 Top 40 hits. Of those, 7 songs reached number 1 on the Billboard Chart, including Sherry, Walk Like A Man, and My Eyes Adored You. He sold over 100 million records between 1962 and 1978. In 1990, Frankie and the Four Seasons were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, putting his in select company. Then in 2005, Frankie scored an even rarer honor. The saga of the Four Seasons was turned into a Broadway play. Jersey Boys took Broadway by storm, winning 4 Tony awards, including best musical. It remains the hottest ticket in town some 10 years later. And Frankie continues to tour, as eveidenced by this high quality audience recording from April 26, 2014, just a year ago today. The band played Happy Birthday as the show took place just a little over a week before Frankie celebrated #80!

The 2000s - #6: On October 10, 2006, Jimmy Buffett released Take The Weather With You, the 27th studio album of his long, storied career. Clearly the years had not impacted Buffett’s commercial viability, as the album went to #1 on Billboard's country charts, also reaching #4 on the Billboard 200. Interestingly, 10 of the 14 songs on the album were covers. Of the 4 tunes Jimmy wrote or co-wrote, Breathe In, Breathe out, Move On was written for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. This soundboard recording captures Jimmy on April 25, 2007, 8 years ago today, on tour in Atlanta in support of Take The Weather With You. The set list features 5 tunes from that album, a host of Buffett classics, and some interesting covers such as In My Room, Brown Eyed Girl, On The Road Again and Southern Cross. Download this one and get an early start on the summer.

The 2000s - #5: On April 1, 2002, Paul McCartney launched his Driving The USA tour, his first tour since his 1993 New World Tour. As I mentioned in a post a few years ago, Paul's return to the stage followed a very difficult period in his life, marked by the deaths of wife Linda, and former Beatle band mate George Harrison, as well as the tragedy of September 11. Maybe those events caused Sir Paul to take a new perspective on his life. Maybe he began to realize that life truly was too short. Whatever the reason, it was clear that something had changed, because on this tour, more than on any previous solo venture, Paul seemed to truly embrace his past. Over 20 songs each night were Beatle classics. The set lists also included tributes to September 11 (Freedom), John (Here Today), George (Something) and Linda (My Love). My lovely bride and I saw Paul at Madison Square Garden on April 27, 2002, and the emotion that filled the building that night has stayed with me to this very day. While I couldn't find a bootleg of the show I attended, here's an excellent ALD recording from 3 days earlier, on April 24, 2002, 13 years ago this very day. Download this one to hear a legend now secure in his legacy.

The 2000s - #4:  On March 18, 2004, a good friend of mine, who is quite the Neil Young fanatic, took me to see Neil at Radio City Music Hall for a presentation of Greendale. Greendale is a concept album that loosely tells the tale of the murder of a police officer and its effect on 3 generations of a family. For more details on Greendale, go here. The Radio City performance featured a full cast stage show, complete with scenary, backgrounds and special effects, enacting the saga of the Green Family, as Neil and Crazy Horse played the album in its entirety. At the conclusion of Greendale, Neil and Crazy Horse returned for a 5 song encore, including an incendiary version of Cinnamon Girl. While I have not been able to find a bootleg of the stage show version of Greendale, I do have this acoustic version, from April 22, 2003, a dozen years ago today, in Stockholm. Some sites say this is a soundboard, others say its an outstanding audience recording. Either way, the sound is great so download this one and check out Neil's tale of the town of Greendale.

The 1990s - #5: On March 30, 1994, Pink Floyd launched their Division Bell Tour, in support of the album of the same name. This marked the 2nd tour and album since Roger Waters left the band in 1985 and David Gilmour took on the leadership role in the group. The album went to number 1 on the Billboard charts as soon as it was released, but the impressive sales were not matched by glowing reviews. In fact, most critics panned the album. Rolling Stone, for example, wrote that Gilmour's guitar solos "were once the band's centrepieces, as articulate, melodic and well-defined as any in rock, but he now has settled into rambling, indistinct asides that are as forgettable as they used to be indelible."   The critics had little impact on the fans, who not only bought 3 million copies of the disc in the US alone, but turned out in droves for the live shows. The band played to 5.5 million people in 68 cities; with over $250 million in ticket sales, making it, at the time, the largest grossing tour in history.  This HQ audience recording (its so good people often mistake it for a soundboard), captures Pink Floyd on April 21, 1994, 21 years ago today, in Oakland, CA, the 10th show of the tour.  What no one knew at the time was that it would also be the last Pink Floyd tour.  Download this one, therefore, to hear one of the band's last live performances.

Van Morrison - 1992-04-20 - San Francisco, CA (HQ Aud)

The 1990s - #4: Believe it or not, 3 of the best concerts I've ever attended took place on April 27 and all at the same concert complex:
  • Eric Clapton in 1987 at Madison Square Garden
  • Van Morrison in 1992 at the Paramount, a 5,600 seat venue built underneath Madison Square Garden (later called The Theater at MSG)
  • Paul McCartney in 2002 at Madison Square Garden
Unfortunately, I’ve never found a copy of Van The Man’s show,  That concert holds special memories for both my bride and I as we saw it just 2 weeks before our wedding. We both love his music, so much so that our wedding song is Someone Like You, an incredibly beautiful song by Van that far too few people know about. We've seen Van at least a half dozen times in concert, and know that, on occasions, he can be enigmatic, petulant and uninvolved. None of that was the case on April 27, 1992. Van was in tremendous spirits, even joking with the band and the audience. He played incredible versions of Tore Down A La Rimbaud, All Saints Day and Did Ye Get Healed during the main set, and had the entire audience on its feet with killer versions of Whenever God Shines His Light and In The Garden during the encore. While he didn't play our wedding song, the show was a perfect pre-wedding gift. So, in the absence of having a tape of that that concert, we bring you this high quality audience recording from just a week prior, on April 20, 1992, 23 years ago today. The set list is very similar to the April 27 show, and Van The Man seems to be in almost as good spirit!

The 1980s - #3: Between September 1977 and March 1981, I saw the Grateful Dead 10 times. Over the next 6 years, from April 1981 to March 1987, I would only see them twice as business school, starting a career, moving out on my own, etc., limited the number of concerts I attended (from April 1987 to June 1995, I'd make up for lost time by seeing another 40 or so Dead shows). One of those 2 shows was 32 years ago today, April 16, 1983 at the Brenden Byrne Arena (later the Continental Arena and now the Izod Center) in the Meadowlands complex in East Rutherford, NJ. And what a show it turned out to be. The Dead were hitting on all cylinders from the opening notes of New Minglewood Blues. Set 1 closed with an amazingly up-tempo version of Touch Of Grey. Set 2 opened with the traditional pairing of China Cat into I know You Rider, followed by a great combination of Uncle John's Band into Truckin'. All that would have been enough to give the show 5 stars, but the best was still to come. After the drums segment, Stephen Stills appeared on stage unannounced, launching into Black Queen. Stills played on Iko Iko as well, then took a break for a few songs, rejoining the Dead for One More Saturday Night and Johnny B. Goode. Watching Stills and Garcia trade solos was a rare treat! And as the back cover artwork shows, they seemed to enjoy it as well -- check out the smiles! Download this one for an historic pairing of 2 guitar legends!

The Dilemma of Audience Recordings

Recently, I've gotten several comments asking why we are posting so many more audience recordings than in the past.  Some of those comments have been positive while others aren't thrilled about it.  The bottom line is that I do plan to include more audience shows as we go forward, and to explain why, I reposting below an entry from several months ago!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was 6 or 7 years ago when I first found sites on the web where I could download unreleased live shows.  I quickly learned that not all downloads were created equally. Some sounded incredibly good, often better than official live releases, while others sounded like they had been recorded under water using a tin can and a string.  By trial and error, I learned that for the most past FM broadcasts and soundboard recordings could be counted on to sound great, while audience recordings, well, they were a whole different story.

For the longest time, I pretty much avoided posting any audience recordings on this blog because most, to be honest, sounded awful,  I wanted folks who came to So Many Roads to find great sounding concerts, a lesson I learned from the legendary Tunz Master Dino. That said, in the last year or so, I've softened my stance on audience recordings somewhat, for several reasons. First, I've found more and more audience tapes that actually sound good.  Even a couple, such as the Neil Young Greendale show from Europe, that you could swear were soundboards. Second, some historically important concerts are only available as audience tapes, and given that the historical bent of this blog, I felt it was important to post them.  Finally, I've had numerous requests from readers of this blog for certain shows which can only be found as audience tapes.  I like to be responsive to the folks who support this blog, so I've taken to posting more audience recordings. That said, the blog will still be well over 90% soundboard and FM recordings.

For the 10% or so audience tapes,  I do my best to post only excellent/high quality recordings.  I listen to every one of then before I post them, trying to make sure the sound quality, while maybe not as pristine as a soundboard, is clear, with no distortion, static or excessive audience noise.  I try to avoid anything that sounds like it was recorded in cave, where vocals are distant or tinny, or where you can't tell the guitars from the drums.

Of course, its hardly an exact science.  What I think sounds great someone else may find unacceptable or vice versa.  And I'd be lying if I didn't say that an audience tape of a band I love, or of a show I attended, always seems to sound better to me. Guess that's just human nature at work.

In any event, knowing all the issues around audience tapes, I make sure every one is clearly marked as such.  That way no one is surprised.   If you don't want to take any chances, just avoid the ones that say audience tapes.  If your ears are a bit more forgiving, you can take a chance on them.

Audience tapes, even the best quality ones, will always pose a dilemma for both poster and the down loader, but here at So Many Roads we think we've taken an approach that's honest and open, and hopefully works for everyone involved.

2000s - #3: On April 4, 1968, a great man of peace, the Reverend Martin Luther King, met with a violent death when he was assassinated in Memphis. King, the leader of the Civil Rights Movement, the man renowned for his I Have A Dream Speech in 1963, had made a prophetic speech just a night before his death  proclaiming to a crowd at the Mason Temple that "Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!"  His death triggered riots across the country, with Washington DC, Baltimore and Chicago seeing some of the most violent protests.  The peace and love of 1967 had vanished, as 1968 became one of the most turbulent year's in US history. Two months later, Robert F. Kennedy would be assassinated after winning the Democratic primary in California.  College campuses erupted in protests over the war in Vietnam, especially in the wake of The Test Offensive which made i more and more apparent that the war could not be won. Riots broke out at the Democratic Convention in Chicago, as police brutality beat anti war protesters. Dr. King's death was emblematic of a tragic year in the United States. But he did not die in vain. The efforts he began to ensure equality for all people continue today.  And, his cause has inspired numerous artists to write and sing songs both about him and his work. Paul McCartney, for example, has explained that Blackbird, written in 1968 around the time of King's assassination was inspired by "the black people's struggle in the southern states, and I was using the symbolism of a blackbird. It's not really about a blackbird whose wings are broken, you know, it's a bit more symbolic."  This FM broadcast captures Sir Paul in Birmingham on April 14, 2003, a dozen years ago today, playing a set list that includes Blackbird.

U2 - 2011-04-13 - Sao Paulo, Brazil (SBD)

The 2010’s - #3: On June 30, 2009, U2 launched 360 degrees tour, which encompassed 110 shows over a 2 year stretch. The tour was undertaken in support of the band's then new album, No Line On The Horizon. Why a name for the tour that was different from the album title? U2 decided to name the tour after their unique stage configuration allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. The tour became the highest grossing by any rock band in history, with $736 million in ticket sales. The set list for the 2011 portion of the tour featured more songs from Actung Baby, to mark the 20th anniversary of that album. This soundboard recording captures the band on April 13, 2011, just 4 years ago today, in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
