1981: In the summer of 1981, Rick Derringer was on the road touring with his band, when the truck containing all their equipment was stolen. Unable to replace the truck and gear himself, Derringer's carrer was in serious trouble.  Fortunately, his friend singer Lorna Luft, came up with the idea to do a benefit concert to raise money to replace the stolen gear. Luft stated calling other artists, many of whom had benefited from Rick's work as a guitarist and producer over the years. In less than a week, she had assembled an all-star lineup including Ian Hunter, Dr. John, Edgar Winter. Hall & Oates, Southside Johnny, Ellen Foley and Todd Rundgren.  They all came together at the the Palladium in New York City on September 13, 1981, 45 years ago today as captured in this FM broadcast for a performance on behalf of Rick and his band.

1983: In 1983, Rick Derringer released his 5th studio album, entitled Good Dirty Fun. He toured in support of he disc, including this show from November 29, 1983, 41 years ago today, in Cincinnati, as captured in this FM broadcast. But Derringer's album isn't the reason for this post. No, we selected this show because first, we needed something from 1983 to keep with this month's theme and second, it features Hang On Sloopy. The tune, recorded by Derringer when he was just 17 in 1965 while with the McCoys, is one of my guilty pleasures. The song actually went to #1 on the Billboard charts, but was knocked out of the top spot after just once week by a little known tune from a relatively obscure band - Yesterday by The Beatles! I actually heard the late, great Tom Petty play Hang On Sloopy live just a few months prior to this Derringer show, on April 1 1983 during at a concert at the Byrne Arena. By the way, Rick also breaks out a mean version of Rock n Roll Hoochie Koo!

While Ringo headlined these tours, singing his Beatles and solo material, his supporting band consisted of major players in the rock world, who would perform their own tunes, often with Ringo on drums. The 2010 edition of the All Starr's included Edgar Winter, Gary Wright, Richard Page, Wally Palmar, Rick Derringer and Gregg Bissonette. This sounboard recording captures Ringo and his friends in Rancho Mirage onAugsut 5, 2010, a dozen years ago today.

No, we choose this show for the following 3 reasons: first, we needed something from 1983! Second, we neeeded something for November 16 is keeping with our this day in history theme,  And third and most importanly, becuase it features Hang On Sloopy.
