McGuinn, Clark, & Hillman - 1979-05-31 - Osaka, Japan (SBD) 

As the decade of the 1970s came to a close, the Byrds seemed to be on the verge of a reunion. Roger McGuiin, Gene Clark and Chris Hillman, along with David Crosby, played together on both December 8, 1977 February 9, 1978. While the Byrds never officially re-formed, those shows did lead to McGuinn, Clark and Hillman touring and recording together. In early 1979, they released their self titled debut album, which spawned the top 40 hit, Don’t You Write Her Off Like That. The album was a disappointment to both fans and critics, who were expecting the Byrds but instead of crisp harmonies and McGuinn’s trademark Rickenbacker guitar, got disco rhythms, slick production, strings and horns. McGuinn, Clark and Hillman went on tour in support of the album in the Spring of 1979, and fortunately their live shows featured plenty of material from their days with The Byrds. This soundboard recording captures the trio on May 31, 1979, 4 decades ago today, in Japan. Download this one to hear the closest thing to the Byrds since their break up.

During the Grateful Dead's hiatus from touring between October 1974 and June 1976, , Bob Weir joined his long time pal, Matthew Kelly in the band Kingfish. Weir's arrival had two major impacts on the band, which were both a blessing and a curse. First, Kingfish finally got a recording contract, thanks to the Grateful Dead's new label, Round Records. Second, from that point in they were often identified as Bob Weir's backing band. Yet, as can be seen from this show, an  soundboard recording from 44 years ago today, May 30, 1975, the band only included 2 Grateful Dead tunes (promised Land, Around & Around) in their set list. So, clearly they had their own unique sound. Download this one and take a listen for yourself. 

June's Theme At So Many Roads

For June, our theme is The Allman Brothers Band.  We'll bring you at least 10 posts from the Allmans, as well as posts from Greg Allman and Warren Haynes. In addition, we'll post shows from numerous bands connected to the Allman Brothers in one way or another.  For every band we post, we'll explain that connection, whatever it may be. While some of those connections are fairly obvious (think the Grateful Dead or The Marshall Tucker Band, for example), some I think you'll find quite surprising!  By the way - our list of connections isn't intended to be exhaustive - we're just trying to highlight some of the ways the bands that we post next month are linked to the Allmans.  I'm sure we'll miss a few connections so feel free to post any we missed in the comments.

Folks, I do my best to re-post all shows that are requested, providing that those who ask are polite about it.  I really do appreciate a "please" or a "thanks in advance" as part of your request. It may be a pet peeve of mine, but I do not consider comments like "Dead Link or "Link is Dead" as requests.  Those are simply statements of fact! If you'd like me to re-post something, then ask nicely! A liitle kindness goes a long way!

Just a reminder - here's our complete policy on re-posts:  

• If there's a show you would like me to re-post, and you ask using common courtesy, I'll do my best to get to it in 48 to 72 hours. 
• If you are asking me to re-post every dead link for a particular band, well, that's something I simply won't be able to do. Just not enough time in the day and I do have a wife, kids, job, etc.
• If you are rude in your request, you're getting no response.  
• If you go through a bunch of posts and simply comment "Dead Link", you are not getting a response
• Also, I will no longer take re-post requests from Anonymous users. Most of the time, the issues outlined above are caused by folks who are Anonymous, so unless you have some kind of identity (such as Speedy, or Wolfclan or AZ Jones, or PigStreet, etc), I won't be honoring the request. Grateful Dead - 1969-05-29 - Santa Barbara, CA (SBD)

As the decade of the 1960s came to an end, the Grateful Dead were beginning to take the improvisational style to new heights. Their concerts at The Fillmore West in late February/early March that year, from which the album Live Dead was culled (and more recently a 9 disc box set of the entire run) found the band exploring the depths of space on tunes such as Dark Star, St. Stephen and The Other One.. At the same time, with Pigpen at the helm on vocals, they could produce powerful down and dirty blues numbers such as Alligator or Turn On Your Lovelight. When the Live Dead disc was released in late 1969, it marked the first time the band had released a live performance on disc. At the time, Robert Christgau wrote that side two of the album "contains the finest rock improvisation ever recorded." This soundboard recording captures the band during that historic year, on May 30, 1969, a half century ago today, in Santa Barbara.

Led Zeppelin - 1973-05-28 - San Diego, CA (SBD)

Led Zeppelin launched their 1973 North American on May 4, about a month after the release of the band’s 5th album, Houses of The Holy, which had gone to the top of the charts in both the US and UK. Led Zep would play outdoor stadiums for the first time on this run, including a show in Tampa on the 2nd night of the tour that drew 56,800 fans, breaking the attendance record set by The Beatles at Shea Stadium in 1965. The shows also incorporated more theatrics and special effects, including dry ice, lasers, backdrop mirrors, hanging mirror balls and pyrotechnics. The last 3 shows of the tour at Madison Square Garden, were filmed and taped for use in compiling the band’s first concert movie and its accompanying live album soundtrack, both entitled The Song Remains The Same, which would be released in 1976. This soundboard recording captures the band early on in that tour, in San Diego on May 28, 1973, 46 years ago today. After David Johansen closed his set at The Paradise on May 27, 1978, 41 years ago today, another new wave/punk icon took the stage. In early 1978, Blondie, led by Deborah Harry, released their second album, Plastic Letters, which slipped into the bottom quarter of the Billboard top 100 albums at #78. The disc enjoyed far more success in the UK. What no one at the Paradise could imagine, however, is that by the end of the year, Blondie would become an enormous success in the US. The album Parallel Lines, released in September, would hit #6 on the US charts, propelled by the single Heart Of Glass, which climbed all the way to the top spot.

David Johansen - 1978-05-27 - Boston, MA (FM) 

Long before he was doing a lounge act as Buster Poindexter, David Johansen was part of the punk/new wave scene. In the early 1970s, he was a member of the New York Dolls, along with Johnny Thunders and Sylvain Sylvain. The Dolls, along with The Velvet Underground and The Stooges, were pioneers of the punk movement. After the Dolls split up, Johansen struck out on his own, releasing his self-titled debut album in 1978 followed up by In Style in 1979. The 2 discs included tunes which would become staples of his live shows, including Funnky But Chic, Melody, Frenchette, You Touched Me To and Girls. This FM broadcast captures Johansen on his first solo tour, at The Paradise in Boston on May 27, 1978, 41 years ago today. In May 1973, Van Morrison launched a 3 month tour of the US and Europe, accompanied by with his legendary backing band, the Caledonia Soul Orchestra. Music historians often label these shows as among the finest of his long storied career. Even the fickle Morrison seems to agree, having said at the time that “I am getting more into performing. It's incredible. When I played Carnegie Hall in the fall something just happened. All of a sudden I felt like 'you're back into performing' and it just happened like that...A lot of times in the past I've done gigs and it was rough to get through them. But now the combination seems to be right and it's been clicking a lot.” The concert performances were described by writer Erik Hage as "sequences of a young soul lion whipping the crowd into a frenzy and then stopping on a dime—teasing out anticipation, rushing, receding, and coaxing every drop out of his band." The tour produced the album Its Too Late To Stop Now, which critics have hailed as one of the finest live discs ever recorded. Of course, on the heels of that success, in typical Van fashion, he abruptly went in a different direction, disbanding the Caledonia Soul Orchestra just 3 months after the tour ended. This soundboard recording captures Van The Man during that legendary tour on May 26, 1973, 46 years ago today.

In May 1973, Paul McCartney launched a tour of the United Kingdom to promote the album Red Rose Speedway and the singe Live and Let Die, from the James Bond film of the same name.  The album would climb to #1 on the US Billboard charts, powered by the single My Love, which also claimed the top spot.  Live and Let Die, would reach #2 on the Billboard charts.  For Macca, whose earlier solo releases had mixed commercial success, this was the start of a 5 year run that would feature 3 more #1 albuns (Band on The Run, Wings Over America and Wings At The Speed of Sound) and a #2 (London Town), as well as 4 more #1 singles (Band On The Run, Listen To What The Man Said, Silly Love Songs and With A Little Luck). The UK tour ended with 3 concerts at the Hammersmith Odeon. This high quality audience recording captures Macca and Wings on the middle night on mAy 26, 1973, 46 years ago today. By the way, the opening act for Paul & Wings those 3 nights - the one and only Brinsley Schwarz who we posted earlier this month.  Note - while the sound quality on this may be a bit below our normal standards, we wanted to share it given that live tapes of shows prior to the Wings Over The Word/America tour of 1975-1976 are hard to find.

When Cream toured the US in spring of 1968, they made a fateful decision - they would end the band! The tensions between Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, Clapton's need to pursue different musical directions, and the rigors of touring, all combined to bring Cream's 2 year rock and roll ride to end. But what a ride it was, as the trio combined rock, blues and psychedelia to take the rock world by storm. Songs such as Sunshine of Your Love, Tales of Brave Ulysses, and White Room became rock anthems. Their live shows were legendary for extended jams, showcasing each member's incredible skills. Despite the decision to disband, Cream stayed together for the rest of 1968, releasing the albums Wheels of Fire and Goodbye, and playing a farewell tour in the fall. After that, they would not play together again until their introduction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993! This high quality audience recording from 51 years ago today, May 25, 1968, captures the band during the tour where they decided to call it quits. When Jimi Hendrix arrived in San Diego for a show on May 24, 1969, a half century ago today. change was in the air. The Coronado Bay Bridge, designed to replace the ferry that shuttled folks across the  was in the final phase of construction before its scheduled August 3rd opening. Also nearing completion was the Fashion Valley Mall, a fifty million dollar shopping center covering seventy-eight acres of land that had previously been home to The Padres' Westgate Park . Other changes brewed on college campuses in the area, Students at San Diego State University responded to headlines about the war in Vietnam by making headlines of their own with campus anti-war rallies, while academic strikes were held in symbolic protest of U.S. bombing raids. Bob Dylan, whose tune The Time's They Are A Changing could have been the theme song of 1960's, turned 28 that day, Also on May 24, The Beatles, who had revolutionized rock and roll, saw their single Get Back hit #1 on Billboard charts, knocking Aquarius/Let The Sunshine, from the landmark musical Hair, from the top slot. The Jimi Hendrix Experience, whose music and style was symbolic of the times, also was in the midst of change.  Hendrix had grown tired of constant conflicts with bassist Noel Redding, so much so that he even let slip to a local reporter that personnel changes in tn the band might be on the horizon. In fact, just about a month later, on June 20, 1969 in Denver, the original Experience played its lats show. Redding would be replaced by Billy Cox. Yet, despite swirling uncertainty, one thing remained constant - the virtuoso abilities of Hendrix on stage.  This soundboard recording of that May 24 show catures Jimi at his peak, and descriptions of the show place it in the pantheon of his finest performances.  Download and listen for yourself.

Well, we brought you shows from Joe Jackson and Grham Parker this month, so its only fitting we have one from the Third Angry Young Man of Punk and New Wave, Mr Elvis Costello. In January 1979, Costello released his 3rd album, Armed Forces, although during production the working title for the disc was Emotional Fascism. The disc continued Costello’s run of commercial and critical success. Armed Forces climbed to # 10 on the Billboard charts in the US, and did even better in the UK, reaching the #2 position. Famed critic Robert Christgau gave the album a grade of A-, while Rolling Stone wrote that it’s “an album that's a killer in several senses of the word.” In 2000, Q magazine placed Armed Forces at number 45 on its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. Then, in 2003, the album was ranked number 482 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.  The soundboard recording captures Costello on Top Of The Pops, playing Oliver's Army, the first single from Armed Forces, on May 23, 1979, 4 decades ago this very day.

The Doors - 1969-05-23 - New York, NY (SBD)

In late April 1969, PBS spent 2 days filming The Doors for a television special entitled “A Profile of Jim Morrison and The Doors - On and Off Stage”. On April 28, the band was filmed performing 6 songs, including the only known complete live recording of the Soft Parade. The next day, an interview between Richard Goldstein and the Doors was recorded, during which in which Jim attempted to read poetry from his collection entitled from The Lords and The New Creatures. Later, on May 13, PBS filmed a panel discussion about the band that included Goldstein, Patricia Kennealy, William 'Rosko' Mercer from WNEW-FM, and Alfred G. Aronowitz. In between all that filming, a “little” incident occurred in Miami on March 1. During a concert that night, a very drunk and antagonistic Jim Morrison, who spent a good deal of the show taunting the audience and security, was arrested for allegedly exposing his private parts. Whether he did or didn’t is subject to debate until this very day. Despite the incident, PBS did not pull the show, broadcasting it on WNET in NY on May 23, 1969, a half century ago today. In late 1970, Santana had an enormous commercial and critical success with the band's second album, Abraxas, which featured such soon to be classics as Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen and Oye Como Va.  The album went to #1, and drew widespread acclaim for its mix of Latin influences with traditional rock arrangements. This soundboard captures Santana shortly after they finished recording Abraxas, on May 22, 1970, 49 years ago today, in Hawaii.  The set list features numerous tunes from the soon to be released disc including the aforementioned Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen, and Oye Como Va as well as  Se A Cabo and Hope You're Feeling Better.

Frank Sinatra - 1968-05-22 - Oakland, CA (SBD)

The 1968 Democratic Presidential primaries featured a tight 3 way race between Eugene McCarthy, Hubert Humphrey and Robert Kennedy. Each of the candidates had strong support from celebrities and musicians. For example, Paul Newman and Simon & Garfunkel went on the campaign trail in support of McCarthy. Bill Cosby, Bobby Darin and the Jefferson Airplane were in Kennedy’s corner. Of the 3 candidates, Humphrey probably had the least celebrity support, but one man on his side was a giant. The Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra, lent his clout and voice to the Humphrey campaign. Sinatra would perform several benefit concerts for Humphrey, including this fundraiser from May 22, 1968, 51 years ago today. This soundboard recording captures every note of that historic performance. Humphrey would go on to win the nomination, but the that victory was overshadowed by the assassination of Robert Kennedy on June 5, just hours after his victory in the California primary. If 1967 had produced the Summer of Love, then 1968 brought the Spring of Sorrow, with the loss of not only Kennedy, but also Martin Luther King just 2 months earlier on April 4 1968. When you download and listen to this one, please take a moment to remember 2 men of peace who were tragic victims of violence and taken from us well before their time.

Jerry Garcia (Legion Of Mary) - 1975-05-21 - Berkeley, CA (SBD)

During the Grateful Dead’s 18 month hiatus from October 1974 to June 1976, Jerry Garcia engaged in a host of side projects. Those ranged from editing the Grateful Dead movie to recording new material to forming a new band known as Legion of Mary. In addition to Garcia, Legion of Mary (LOM) included Merl Saunders on keyboard, Martin Fierro on sax, and Ron Tutt on drums. While the band’s tenure was short, Garcia used it to continue to explore and experiment with a host of musical styles. In their live shows, the band melded together an eclectic mix blues, funk, reggae, rock, psychedalia, and especially jazz. This soundboard recording from Berkeley on May 21, 1975, 44 years ago today, is a perfect example of the breath and range of music covered by LOM. The band played R&B songs such as I Feel Like Dynamite, Motown/Soul/Stax tunes such as Creepin' and That's What Love Will Make You Do, as well as reggae classics such as The Harder They Come. The Rascals - 1971-05-20 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

In the early 1960s, three quarters of this band originally played with Joey Dee and the Starlighters. When Felix Cavaliere, Eddie Brigati and Gene Cornish went out on their own, adding drummer Dino Danelli from Garfield, NJ, the same town Brigati was from, they became the Young Rascals. Eventually shortened to just The Rascals, the band ran off a string of top 10 hits in the late 1960s, including 3 number 1 tunes in Good Lovin, Groovin' and People Got To Be Free. It ended all too quickly, with the band coming apart as the decade came to an end. By the time The Band took the stage at the Fillmore West on May 20, 1971, 4 dozen years ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording, both Brigati and Cornish has left the band.  Less than a year later, The Rascals would disband, though in 2012, they would come back together for the Broadway production, Once Upon A Dream,.  Produced by Miami Steve and his wife Maureen, the show featured the band performing their tunes set against a backdrop of the history of the group and the 1960s. The show included interviews with the four Rascals, filmed scenes of actors enacting out key moments in the band's history, news footage, and archival footage of the band.

Jefferson Airplane - 1967-05-19 - San Luis Obispo, CA (SBD) 

 In late 1966, the Jefferson Airplane recruited Grace Slick, and the rest, as they say, was history. Over the course of the next 6 months, the Airplane took center stage as one of the leading bands of the new psychedelic rock movement that emerged from San Francisco. Their breakthrough album, Surrealistic Pillow, produced by the Dead's Jerry Garcia, and released in February 1967, spawned two huge hits, Somebody To Love and White Rabbit. The Airplane played at the Human Be-In in January and then at the Monterrey Pop Festival in June, helping inaugurate the Summer of Love, in which thousands of young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. The year 1967 was as one of those transcendent moments in rock history, with debut albums from Grateful Dead, The Doors and Jimi Hendrix, as well the release on June 1 of what many folks believe is the greatest album of all time, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles. The Airplane were an integral part of this musical revolution and this soundboard, from May 19, 1967, 52 years ago today, captures them just as they begin their rise to national prominence.

Pink Floyd - 1972-05-18 - Berlin, Germany (Ex Aud)

In February 1972, Pink Floyd did something very few rocks bands ever have - they played 4 concerts to give the press a sneak peak at 45 minutes of new music they were developing. Those 4 shows were at the Rainbow Theater in London. That suite of tunes, originally entitled Eclipse, would eventually comprise the legendary album Dark Side of The Moon. The Rainbow concerts took place over a year before the album was released, but the reviews provided a preview of what was to come.. Michael Wale of The Times described the piece as "... bringing tears to the eyes. It was so completely understanding and musically questioning." Derek Jewell of The Sunday Times wrote "The ambition of the Floyd's artistic intention is now vast." So too would be the success of Dark Side of The Moon, as the album would sell over 50 million copies worldwide and remain on the Billboard Charts in the US for an almost incomprehensible 741 weeks spanning 15 years from 1973 to 1988.  Pink Floyd would eventually play over 90 shows that year, each one previewing the soon to be released masterpiece. This excellent audience recording captures them in Berlin, on May 18, 1972, 47 years ago today.

Following Keith Moon's death in September 1978, The Who decided to continue as band, recruiting former Small Faces drummer Kenney Jones; keyboardist John "Rabbit" Bundrick was also added to the line-up for live performances, adding another element to the band's sound. The Who played 7 shows in Europe in May and June 1979, the first series of concerts of the post Moon era. This FM broadcast captures The abdn in PAris on May 17, 1979, 4 decades ago this very day.

Grateful Dead - 1978-05-17 - Chicago IL (SBD)

As we've discussed in several posts on this blog, 1978 was a year of highs and lows for the Grateful Dead. For example, their 3 shows at the Pyramids in Egypt, while historic in terms of the setting, did not feature the band's finest musical moments. Their performance at Winterland on New Year’s Eve, however, is the stuff of legends. The spring tour that year was also a high point, as shows from April 22, April 24, May 10, May 11 and May 14 have all been officially released. This soundboard recording captures the Dead at the end of that wonderful Spring run, on May 17, 1978, 41 years ago today, in Chicago.

On May 16, 1974, 45 years ago today, folks who payed their $3.50 admission (it was $4 on Friday and Saturday!) to see Ry Cooder at the Bottom Line in NY, got a special treat. Neil Young was in the audience, and he was so inspired by the Mr. Cooder's performance, that he took to the stage to play an acoustic set! I can't even imagine something like that happening today! Neil played 11 tunes, all of which, with the exception of Helpless, were unreleased at the time. Many were from the upcoming On The Beach album, which Neil would release in July of that year. Neil is friendly and talkative throughout the set. He doesn't even get upset when a few members of the small crowd yell for Southern Man. Instead, he tells a funny story about the same thing happening in LA. Here's an excellent audience tape of Neil's entire set from 36 years - this one is definitely a collector's item.

As the decade of the 1970s came to a close, a host of punk and new wave bands rose to prominence. While many would reach the peak of their fame in the 1980s, they paid their dues in the 1970s. For example, in early 1979, The Police went on tour in North America in support of their debut album, Outlandos d’Amour. The tour kicked off on March 1 at the legendary Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles and ran until May 25, with the band criss-crossing the US and Canada. They often played 2 shows a night, and rarely took a day off. Given that the album had flopped when initially released, the band felt compelled to tour relentlessly in hopes of gaining exposure for themselves and airplay for their songs. The strategy seemed to work, as the album eventually climbed to the #23 position on the Billboard charts in the US, and rose all the way to the #2 position in the UK. In addition, 3 singles from the disc – Roxanne, Can’t Stand Losing You and So Lonely - charted in the top 20 in the UK in 1979. Roxanne also climbed to the #32 spot on the US Billboard charts. Stephen Stills - 1972-05-15 - Atlanta, GA (SBD)

In 1971, in the wake of one of CSNY’s earliest break ups, Stephen Stills formed Manassas, recruiting an all star cast including Chris Hillman, Al Perkins, Calvin "Fuzzy" Samuels, Paul Harris, Dallas Taylor, and Joe Lala. The band released their self titled debut, a double album, on April 12, 1972. This soundboard recording captures Stills and Manassas on tour in support of that disc on May 15, 1972, 47 decades ago today. The album would climb to #4 on the Billboard charts in June. Ironically, Manassas would share space in the top 10 that week with Harvest from Neil Young and the self-titled debut record from Crosby & Nash. Maybe that chart success was a harbinger of the future. CSNY would reform in October 1973, soon after the 4 members appeared on stage together at, of all places, a Manassas concert!

Lou Reed - 1974-05-14 - Sweden (SBD) 

In July 1973, Lou Reed released the concept album Berlin, which tells the tale of a couple, Jim and Caroline, and their struggle with drug addiction and abuse. The album was initially a commercial and critical disaster, though over the years opinions have changed, with Rolling Stone even ranking it at #334 on its list of the greatest albums of all time. A year later, Reed released his 4th solo album, entitled Sally Can’t Ride. RCA records launched a massive publicity campaign in support of the album, which despite mediocre critical reviews, rose to #10 on the Billboard charts. It would be the highest charting album of reed’s career. Reed seemed completely uninterested, however, in the material. He was later quoted as saying “I slept through that LP - whatever they suggested I said yes.... It seems like the less I'm involved with a record, the bigger a hit it becomes. If I weren't on the record at all next time around, it might go to Number One."  This soundboard recording captures Lou on tour in between the release of those 2 very different albums, in Stockholm on May 14, 1974. 45 years ago today.

Steppenwolf - 1968-05-13 - Dallas, TX (SBD)

While 1967 was the Summer of Love, 1968 may have been America's darkest hour. Violence appeared to be the order of the day - riots in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention, the My Lai massacre in Viet Nam, and of course, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert kennedy. Perhaps its not a surprise that music that year also had a darker tone. In 1967, a band called the Sparrows changed their name to Steppenwolf, inspired by the Hermann Hesse novel of the same name. That novel portrays man's struggle between spirituality and aggression, similar to what was transpiring in America in 1968. About a year later, in June 1968, the band skyrocketed to fame when they released the single Born To Be Wild. The song contains the lyric "heavy metal thunder", which of course became the name for the more aggressive, thunderous genre of music that emerged as the 1960;s evolved into the 1970's. The song climbed to #2 on the Billboard singles charts, and over the years it has become one of rock’s legendary tunes. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Born To Be Wild at No. 129 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. Since being included in the soundtrack for the movie Easy Rider in 1969, Born to Be Wild has been featured in dozens of other films, such as Coming Home, Borat, Dr. Dolittle 2, and Mr. Bean's Holiday, as well as countless TV shows, such as Married With Children and Miami Vice. This soundboard recording captures Steppenwolf in Dallas on May 13, 1968, 51 years ago today, and just a month before the release of Born To Be Wild.

David Bowie - 1976-05-13 - Rotterdam, Netherlands (SBD)

The 1970s were a time of transformation for rock and roll, and no man was more of a chameleon than David Bowie. Early in the decade he took the stage as Ziggy Stardust, turning his concerts into dramatic and shocking theatrical performances. Late in the decade he abandoned the pomp and circumstance of the Ziggy days for a minimalist approach on a series of albums with Brian Eno and Iggy Pop. Midway through the 1970s, he became the Thin White Duke, a character from the title track of the album Station To Station, released in 1976. Visually, the character was an extension of Thomas Jerome Newton, the extraterrestrial being he portrayed in the film The Man Who Fell to Earth that same year. Emotionally, the character was hollow, reflecting Bowie's addiction to cocaine that left him almost lifeless inside. Bowie's addiction, however, did not stymie his ability to make music, as the Station To Station went to #3 on the Billboard charts, and received strong critical reviews from Rolling Stone and Robert Christgau.
