Long time readers of this blog know that I have frequently sung the praises of Marshall Crensahw. urging folks to go out and buy his first 2 albums, which as famed critic Robert Christgau wrote are simply "perfect". I've only gotten to see Crenshaw once, in October 1996 at Maxwell's in Hoboken, a legendary rock club which unfortunately closed on July 31, 2013, though it did reopen as Maxwell's Taven in 2014.  The place only held abou 200 people, so my lovely bride and I weren't very far from Marshall when he sang one of our favorite tunes, Whenever You're On My Mind. This FM Broadcast captures Crenshaw during the height of his commercial popularity in the 1980s, at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park, on November 30, 1985, 34 years ago today.

I only saw the Marshall Tucker Band in concert just once, as the lead in to the Grateful Dead in September 1977 at Englishtown, NJ. That was my first Dead show and it was so good that it was officially released as part of the Dick's Picks series. Over 150,000 showed up to see the Dead, Marshall Tucker and the New Riders, the largest concert in terms of attendance in NJ history. The MTB played a great set, finishing with a smoking hot version of Can't You See which still ranks as one of the best songs I've ever heard live. This FM broadcast captures the MTB 2 years earlier, in Houston, on November 29, 1975, 44 years ago today.

Ok, I admit it, I'd never seen Lone Justice live.  But I have seem the voice that powered the band, Maria McKee, during her first solo tour, leading in for Neil Young at the Palladium on September 6, 1989.  The tune Shelter, from the album of the same name, has every quality of a number 1 single, yet it barely cracked the top 40.  In any event, her's Maria and Lone Justice about 3 years before I saw here solo, in Chicago on November 29, 1986, 33 years ago today.  And yes, they play Shleter!

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving! Hope everyone has a wonderful day and enjoys Family, Friends, Food and Football.

And please, on a day of being grateful for all that you have, don't forget those who are not so fortunate. Do what you can to help them as well - a great way to start is by making a donation to Hungerthon, a cause long supported by many of the rock artists we feature here at So Many Roads!

Support Why Hunger

If you are enjoying all the things we've done here at So Many Roads in our 10 years sharing tunz, then I ask you to do one thing - Please send a donation to Why Hunger.

As Thanksgiving approaches, we tend to think of feasts, food, family and friends. But for many in this country and across the world, food isn't a given. HUNGER remains one of the greatest problems across the globe.

WhyHunger was founded in 1975 by the late musician Harry Chapin and Radio DJ Bill Ayres on the fundamental belief that access to nutritious food is a human right and hunger is a solvable problem in a world of abundance. What began as a simple commitment between two friends to make a difference has grown into a global non-profit, celebrating over 40 years of steadfast support in building a broad-base social movement led by the grassroots to change the systems, policies and institutions that perpetuate hunger and poverty in our world.

I grew up listening to the Hungerthon campaigns on WNEW-FM as a kid. It made lasting impression on me, as artists such as CSNY, Bruce Springsteen, the Grateful Dead and so many more came together to raise money to fight hunger.  Rock and roll has played a vital role in supporting this endeavor to end hunger, so if you enjoy the music we post here, please take a moment and donate.
nks in advance for supporting such a worthwhile cause.

I saw Rockpile in July 1979, at Belmont Park Racetrack as part of a double bill with Blondie. Needless to say, the contrast between the regular track crowd, many cigar smoking, Oscar Madison types, and the new wavers in attendance for the concert was quite a site to behold,  Rockpile opened their set that day with the hoghly appropriate The Race Is On. I've also seen Nick Lowe solo, leading in for Tom Petty at the Byrne Arena in April 1983.  This FM Broadcast captures Rockpile just a about a year after I saw them live, at the Ritz in New York on November 26, 1980, 39 years ago today.

I've only seen EC twice, once in 1987, which was one of my all time favorite concerts and then again in 1990. I was actually behind the stage for the 1987 show, but EC kept coming back behind the drum kit (manned by Phl Collins) to play for those of us in the cheap seats, so I was probably no more than 20 feet way from him!  Unfortunately, cheap seats no longer exist for Clapton shows in the NY/NJ area, which is part if the reason I've been to so few EC shows, despite the fact he's one of my favorite artists  The lowest priced tickets at his recent shows at Madison Square Garden have been north of $200 each, and anything with a view was way over $300! In any event, much like Paul McCartney, EC has toured extensively in Japan in the last 20 years of so.  In 1999, for example, he played a 14 show tour in the Land of the Rising Sun. This excellent audience recording captures him at the legendary Budokan Hall on November 26, 1999,  2 decades ago today. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for another one from Slowhand in Japan in 1999.

I've been to 3 Joe Jackson concerts - in February 1980, in August 1980 and then in October 1982.  When I saw him that final time. he was in the midst of making the transition from angry punk rocker to a more mainstream artist. His album, Night and Day, released in June, was inspired by Cole Porter and featured, appropriately, more piano based tunes. The song Stepping Out became his only top 10 hit. This show from the World Music Festival on November 25, 1982, 37 years ago today, features that same transitional approach to his music.

I saw Robert Cray twice, both times in 1987. The first time, in April, he led-in for Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden. Then UI saw Cray again in August 1987 at Pier 84 in New York. He was the headline act with John Hiatt as his lead in.  It was a fitting pairing since just as Hiatt had his commercial breakthrough that year, so did Cray. His album Strong Persuader, released in late 1986, climbed into the top 15 on the Billboard charts in 1987. This Tv Audio broadcast captures Cary on the David Letterman show right about the time Strong Persuader was released, on November 25, 1986, 33 years ago today.

Of all of Billy Joel's albums, my two favorites are two of his earliest, Piano Man and Turnstiles. His breakthrough album, The Stranger, didn't do much for me, and his first #1 disc, 52nd Street, is on my list of albums I never want to hear again. That disc came out when I was in college and so many people were playing it constantly that I just couldn't take it any more. So, given those facts, why have I seen Billy Joel in concert on 6 occasions? Well, back in 1990 I met a girl. And we went out on a few dates. And she had tickets to see Billy, her favorite artist, at Yankee Stadium. And she invited me to go. And two years later we were married! And marrying her has been the best thing I've ever done in my life.! So, whenever she wants to see Billy Joel, I gladly get the tickets. This soundboard recording captures Billy long before I ever saw hi live, in Houston on November 25, 1979, 4 decades ago today  The set list includes several songs from his then upcoming album Glass Houses, which was the follow up to 52nd Street, including All for Leyna, Sometimes A Fantasy and You May be Right.

Petty was on tour at the time in support of Long After Dark, his 5th studio disc with the Heartbreakers. The album went to #9 on the Billboard charts and featured the huge MTv hit, You Got Lucky. This soundboard recording captures Petty about 8 years later, on November 22, 1991, 28 years ago today, on tour in support of another  highly successful album, In To The Great Wide Open, which went to #13 on the Billboard charts. Jorma Kaukonen  - 1987-11-23 - Troy, NY (SBD)

I've only seen Jorma once, on July 14, 1979 in Asbury Park NJ. While my buddies and I we really enjoyed the acoustic set, we actually left halfway through the electric set, as the band seemed to be jamming endlessly, with little direction or purpose. That may have reflected the fact that Jorma was a bit directionless at the time, even experimenting with some punk music, which was far removed from his musical roots. In any event, this soundboard recording captures Jorma at his acoustic best, with a little help from Rick Danko, in Troy on on November 23, 1987, 32 years ago today.

For those not familiar with the late great Solomon Burke, he's considered to be one of the founding fathers of soul music in the 1960s. He had a string of hits including Cry to Me, If You Need Me, Got to Get You Off My Mind, Down in the Valley" and Everybody Needs Somebody to Love, the last of which was featured prominently in the Blue Brothers movie. Burke  had a host of nicknames including as King Solomon, the King of Rock 'n' Soul, the Bishop of Soul and even the Muhammad Ali of Soul.  I saw him in June 2003, serving as the lead-in to Van Morrison.  This FM broadcast captures King Solomon 5 years later, and 2 years prior to his death, in Berlin on November 22, 2008. 11 years ago today.

I saw Hall & Oates twice in the late 1970s, both times at the Garden State Art Center - my second concert ever in June 1977 and then again in September 1978. While my buddies and I were big fans of the songs Sara Smile and She's Gone. with the exception of Rich Girl, I don't really care for any of the 6 tunes that the duo took to #1 on the Billboard charts. In any event, soon after seeing them for the 2nd time, my musical tastes moved in new directions. This FM broadcast captures the duo right after the last time I saw them, on November 22, 1978, 41 years ago today.

Neil Young - 1986-11-21 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

Over the years I've seen Neil 6 times - 3 acoustic shows, 2 electric shows and once with CSNY. I've seen him play quiet, heartfelt. spare renditions of his tunes, and I've seen him stomp around, backed by Crazy Horse. like a man possessed, living up to his nickname as the Godfather of Grunge. I've seen him perform the rock opera Greendale and I've seen him help turbo charge on again, off again band mates Crosby, Stills and Nash. No matter what, one thing remained constant in all these performances - Neil stays true to himself and plays what moves him at the moment. This FM broadcast captures Neil and The Horse at their raucous best, in San Francisco, on November 21, 1986, 33 years ago today.

Jerry Garcia Band - 1977-11-20 - Binghamton, NY (SBD)

Besides the countless times I saw the Dead live, I attended 4 Jerry Garcia Band concerts in 3 different decades - in March 1978 at the Capitol Theater, in March 1980, also at the Capitol (a show that has been officially released), in August 1984 at Caldwell College and finally in November 1991 at Madison Square Garden. Garcia solo shows were like Dead concerts in some ways as some songs overlapped, the set lists were unpredictable and the jamming intense, but unlike them in others. Garcia on his own played an amazing variety of covers not found in the Dead's set lists, broke out some of his rarer solo tunes, and took far more solos than he would when jamming with the Dead. To sum it up, seeing Garcia solo was not seeing the Dead, and vice versa.

Today's post goes back just a few months prior to the first time I saw Jerry solo. As Deadheads and long time follower of this blog know, 1977 was one of the most magic years in the grateful Deads's and Jerry Garcia's long strange trip. Garcia was playing so well in 1977 that he just didn’t want to get off the stage. When the Dead ended their 1977 fall tour on November 6, it took just 9 days for Garcia to go back on the road as a solo act. That run would last until December 23, then just 4 days later he would be back with the Dead to close the year with 4 shows at Winterland. This soundboard recording captures Jerry early on in his solo run, on November 20, 1977, 42 years ago today, on Vestal NY.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for another one from Jerry from 1977.

The only time I saw Willie Nelson live was in September 1978 at Giants Stadium, as the lead in to the Grateful Dead's last show prior to heading off to Egypt to play the Pyramids. This post finds Willie "on the road again" 4 decades later, on November 19, 2018, just a year ago today, performing on the legendary television show Austin City Limits. Willie had been the very first artist to ever appear on that program, in 1974. By the way, Austin City Limits is the longest-running music program in television history. It’s the only television show to have been awarded the Presidential Medal of the Arts, and was recently recognized by Time magazine as one of the 10 most influential music programs of all time. Go here to see a list of all every broadcast of Austin City Limits, which has featured a virtual who’s who of legendary music artists in its almost 40 year history.

Allman Brothers Band - 1990-11-19 - New York, NY (SBD)

I've seen the Allman Brothers twice, but unfortunately the band was hardly at their peak for either show. The first time, At Madison Square Garden in July 1979, was just a few years prior to when the band disintegrated, amidst their record label failing, Southern rock falling out of favor, and conflicts between band members. The second time was at the Crackdown Concerts in 1986 which was their first live appearance together in over 4 years. It wouldn't be until later in the decade that the band truly reformed for good. When they did, with the infusion of new talent such as Warren Haynes, and later Derek Trucks, the Brothers soared to new heights.  As part of their comeback, the Allmans appeared on a new show on MTV, entitled Unplugged. This soundboard recording captures that appearance on November 19, 1990, 29 years ago today,  The Allmans were ahead of the curve with Unplugged - it wouldn't become "THE SHOW" that every artist was dying to appear on until Paul McCartney's appearance in 1991, followed by Eric Clapton's in 1992.  By the way, download this one from the Allmans then come back on November 28, for a 2nd one from their 1990 tour.

I've only had the chance to see John Hiatt live on one occasion, in the summer of 1987, at Pier 84 in New York.  Hiatt was the lead in act for Robert Cray.  O course, it was perfect timing as Hiatt had just released his breakthrough disc, Bring The Family. That disc made me a fan for life and is one of the reasons that I constantly mention that Hiatt is vastly under rated,  In any event, it was hard to find a November concert from Mr, Hiatt, but I did find this short, 3 song, in studio performance from November 18, 2011, 8 years ago today. that was broadcast on WTTS-FM in Indiana.

Folks sometimes forget forget, but in the late 70's and early 80's , Linda Ronstadt was the first lady of rock and roll. In fact, on Feb 28, 1977, she was featured on the cover of Time magazine (see that cover here). I was fortunate enough to see her when she played Radio City Music Hall in NY on November 6, 1982. Unfortunately, I have never been able to find a bootleg of that show.

In September 1973, Linda Ronstadt released Don’t Cry Now, her 4th solo studio album. The album marked the start of a new era in Ronstadt’s career. It was her first disc on Asylum Records, after 6 albums produced and released by Capitol. In addition, Don’t Cry Now included a cover of The Eagle’s tune Desperado, which would go on to become one of signature songs and the traditional closing number at her live shows. Finally, and most significantly, the album would herald the start of 2 significant relationships in Ronstadt’s life. Several of the tunes on Don’t Cry Now were produced by JD Souther. Ronstadt and Southern would become romantically involved, and he would write numerous songs for her, including, Faithless Love from the album Heart Like a Wheel and White Rhythm and Blues from the Living In The USA disc. Ronstadt and Souther would also perform several duets, including Hasten Down the Wind, Prisoner in Disguise, and Sometimes You Can't Win. Souther wasn’t the only producer, however, on Don’t Cry Now. Peter Asher, brother to one time Paul McCartney love interest Jane Asher, former member of the '60s rock duo Peter & Gordon, and one time head of of A&R for Apple Records, also worked with Ronstadt on the album. It was the start of a professional relationship that would last well into the 1980’s. Asher turned out to be more collaborative, and more on the same page with her musically, than any producer she had worked with previously. Don’t Cry Now became Ronstadt’s most successful album to that point in her career, reaching #45 on the Billboard Charts. This soundboard recording from The Record Plant in Sausalito, CA from November 18, 1973, 46 years ago today, captures Linda shortly after the release of Don’t Cry Now.
