Grateful Dead - 1969-10-31 - San Jose CA (SBD)

We couldn't have a month dedicated to the 1960s & 1970s without featuring some psychedelic 1969 Grateful Dead. As the decade of the 1960s came to an end, the Grateful Dead were beginning to take the improvisational style to new heights. Their concerts at The Fillmore West in late February/early March that year, from which the album Live Dead was culled (and more recently a 9 disc box set of the entire run) found the band exploring the depths of space on tunes such as Dark Star, St. Stephen and That's It For The Other One. At the same time, with Pigpen at the helm on vocals, they could produce powerful down and dirty blues numbers such as Alligator or Turn On Your Lovelight. When the Live Dead disc was released in late 1969, it marked the first time the band had released a live performance on disc. At the time, Robert Christgau wrote that side two of the album "contains the finest rock improvisation ever recorded."  This soundboard recording captures the Dead during that incredible year in San Jose on October 31, 1969, 49 years ago today.

Bob Marley - 1973-10-31 - Sausalito, CA (FM)

In 1973, Bob Marley and The Wailers, which included both Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, released Catch A Fire, their first album on a major record label. Catch a Fire was followed in October by Burnin', which included future classics, Get Up, Stand Up, and I Shot the Sheriff.  The latter tune captivated Eric Clapton, whose cover version in 1974 went to #1 on the Billboard charts and brought reggae to the attention of an entire new audience. The Wailers also captured the attention of Sly Stone, who asked them to open 17 of his shows on his 1973 tour. After 4 shows, Sly fired the Wailers because they were too popular! Fans wee chanting “Wailers” during Sly’s set, much to the headliner’s chagrin! Soon after that incident, KSAN-FM invited the band to perform on their Live From The Record Plant series.  This FM broadcast captures that concert on October 31, 1973, 45 years ago today.  Download this one to hear the original Wailers, before Tosh and Wailer left to pursue solo careers in 1974.

The Beatles - 1963-10-30 - Stockholm, Sweden (SBD)

After completing their concert tour of Sweden the night before, The Beatles returned to Stockholm on October 30, 1963, 55 years ago today, to record an appearance on the Sveriges Television music show Drop In. The recording took place in front of a studio audience at the Arenateatern, a small theater in Stockholm's Gröna Lund amusement park. The Beatles had intended to perform She Loves You and Twist And Shout on Drop In, but Klas Burling persuaded them to keep the audience happy and play one more song. They launched into I Saw Her Standing There, after which Kersti Adams-Ray attempted to start up the show's theme tune. The Beatles weren't finished, however. Burling managed to talk them into playing one more song to round off the show. They played Long Tall Sally, after which they joined in with hand claps for the Drop In closing theme.  This soundboard captures the entire show, and also includes an interview with Klaus Burling the following day.

Grateful Dead - 1971-10-29 - Cleveland, OH (SBD) 

When the Grateful Dead embarked on a late fall tour in 1971, they had a new addition to their live performances. Keyboardist Keith Godchaux played his first show with the band on October 19, filling in for Ron “Pigpen” McKernan who was ill, then quickly became a full time member. Keith’s wife Donna Jean would join the band the following year. The band also had some new material as they debuted future classics such as Brown-Eyed Women, Jack Straw, Tennessee Jed, “Comes A Time, Ramble On Rose, Mexicali Blues, and One More Saturday Night during this tour. In addition, the Dead used the tour as part a well planned strategy to publicize the band. They had just released their self titled double live album, better known as Skull & Roses, and had secured $100,000 (a hefty sum for the time) to promote the disc. As they often did, the Dead took an out of the box approach for their publicity campaign. Rather than spend the money on advertising, they instead used the dollars to broadcast 15 shows on their fall tour between October 19 and December 31. Rarely in rock history has such a concentrated series of live broadcast ever taken place to promote a band and a album. Often times the broadcasts lasted 5 or 6 hours, as in addition to the Dead's 2 set show, the opening act, the New Riders of The Purple Stage, also was aired live. Incredibly, Jerry Garcia usually sat in with the Riders before his show with the Dead. You can find more detail on these historic broadcasts here at the blog Lost Live Dead.  We're going to bring you 2 of those broadcasts over the next 2 days, starting with this soundboard recording from Cleveland from October 29, 1971, 47 years ago today.  By the way, this fall tour found the band playing extremely well, as evidenced by the fact that all the following shows have been officially released: October 21, 22, 26 and 31, November 14, 15 and 17, and December 14.

The Dilemma of Audience Recordings

Recently, I've gotten several comments asking why we are posting so many more audience recordings than in the past.  Some of those comments have been positive while others aren't thrilled about it.  The bottom line is that I do plan to include more audience shows as we go forward, and to explain why, I am re-posting below an entry from several months ago!

It was 9 or 10 years ago when I first found sites on the web where I could download unreleased live shows.  I quickly learned that not all downloads were created equally. Some sounded incredibly good, often better than official live releases, while others sounded like they had been recorded under water using a tin can and a string.  By trial and error, I learned that for the most past FM broadcasts and soundboard recordings could be counted on to sound great, while audience recordings, well, they were a whole different story.

For the longest time, I pretty much avoided posting any audience recordings on this blog because most, to be honest, sounded awful,  I wanted folks who came to So Many Roads to find great sounding concerts, a lesson I learned from the legendary Tunz Master Dino. That said, in the last year or so, I've softened my stance on audience recordings somewhat, for several reasons. First, I've found more and more audience tapes that actually sound good, really good..  Even a couple, such as the Neil Young Greendale show from Europe, that you could swear were soundboards. Second, some historically important concerts are only available as audience tapes, and given that the historical bent of this blog, I felt it was important to post them.  Finally, I've had numerous requests from readers of this blog for certain shows which can only be found as audience tapes.  I like to be responsive to the folks who support this blog, so I've taken to posting more audience recordings. That said, the blog will still be well over 90% soundboard and FM recordings.

For the 10% or so audience tapes,  I do my best to post only excellent & high quality recordings.  I listen to every one of then before I post them, trying to make sure the sound quality, while maybe not as pristine as a soundboard, is clear, with no distortion, static or excessive audience noise.  I try to avoid anything that sounds like it was recorded in cave, where vocals are distant or tinny, or where you can't tell the guitars from the drums.

Of course, its hardly an exact science.  What I think sounds great someone else may find unacceptable or vice versa.  And I'd be lying if I didn't say that an audience tape of a band I love, or of a show I attended, always seems to sound better to me. Guess that's just human nature at work.

In any event, knowing all the issues around audience tapes, I make sure every one is clearly marked as such.  That way no one is surprised.   If you don't want to take any chances, just avoid the ones that say audience tapes.  If your ears are a bit more forgiving, you can take a chance on them.

Audience tapes, even the best quality ones, will always pose a dilemma for both poster and the down loader, but here at So Many Roads we think we've taken an approach that's honest and open, and hopefully works for everyone involved.

Sam & Dave - 1979-10-27 - Trax, New York, NY (FM)

According to their rock & roll hall of fame bio, Sam & Dave (Sam Moore & Dave Prater) were the most successful soul duo in music history and brought the sounds of the black gospel church to pop music with their call-and-response records. In the 1960s, primarily recording at Stax Records in Memphis, they produced a string of soul classics including Hold On, I'm Comin', You Don't Know Like I Know, I Thank You, When Something is Wrong with My Baby, Wrap It Up, and of course, Soul Man, a tune that climbed all the way to #2 on the Billboard charts.  While the duo has their ups an downs in the early 1970s, including splitting up at one point, they saw a resurgence in interest in their music in 1979, after John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, in their Blues Brother's personas released a cover version of Soul Man.  This FM broadcast captures Sam and Dave that very year, performing at Trax in New York City, on October 27, 1979, 39 years ago today.  By the way, as part of their 1979 comeback tour, they even led in for The Clash at several shows!

ABC television's In Concert was a late-night television series created by Don Kirshner that debuted on November 24, 1972. (Kirsnher would leave the show in 1973 to start his own competing program, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert). The first episode of In Concert featured a show taped at Hofstra University on September 21, 1972 with Alice Cooper, Bo Diddley and Seals & Crofts. The second episode, on December 8, 1972 featured the Allman Brothers Band and Chuck Berry. The series would then run approximately every other Friday night for three years until it was cancelled in 1975. This TV soundboard recording captures Dion on the September 26, 1973 episode of In Concert entitled Oldies But Goodies. (The episode also featured Chubby Checker, The Coasters, Bobby Rydel, The Chrystals and Jackie Wilson)  While Dion has not charted since 1968's Abraham, Martin & John, he had performed at 2 reunion concerts with the Belmonts  in the early 1970s, one on June 2, 1972 at Madison Square Garden and one on May 11, 1973, at  the Nassau Coliseum.  I have been unable to determine if this recording is from either of those shows - if anyone has any further insight I'd greatly appreciate it.

Jimmy Cliff - 1975-10-25 - Boston, MA (SBD)

I gained my first exposure to the legendary reggae artist, Jimmy Cliff thanks to Jerry Garcia, who played stellar live versions of The Harder They Come and Sitting In Limbo. If you don’t have the album, The Harder They Come, which is the soundtrack to the movie of the same name, then you are missing out on one of the landmark recordings in rock history. The disc introduced reggae to mainstream audiences, and has been ranked by Rolling Stone, Time, and Blender as one of the best albums of all time. The music has influenced and been covered by acts as diverse as Garcia, Linda Ronstadt, Joe Jackson, Willie Nelson, The Clash and Bruce Springsteen! Grateful Dead - 1970-10-24 - St Louis, MO (SBD)

For the Grateful Dead, 1970 was a year of transition.  After the psychedelic intensity of 1969's live shows, captured in the album Live Dead, the band stunned fans and critics alike when they released Workingman's Dead in June 1970, followed by American Beauty in November. These were laid back, Americana-styled albums, featuring carefully crafted tunes, tight harmonies, and folk and country rhythms. In fact, legend has it that Jerry Garcia had made an arrangement that in return for his playing pedal steel guitar on Teach Your Children, CSNY would teach the members of the Grateful Dead how to sing harmony for those albums. The 2 discs would feature what would become some of the and's best known tunes - Sugar Magnolia, Uncle John's Band, Casey Jones, and Truckin, just to name a few. The band's live concerts also evolved during this period. Songs such Dark Star, St. Stephen, The Eleven, Caution (Do Not On The Tracks) and Cryptical Envelopment which had been at the center of 1969s psychedelic jams played a less prominent role in the band's set lists.  In their place, the band built jams around tunes such as Truckin, Not Fade Away and Going Down The Road. This soundboard from St Louis captures the band during this transition phase on October 24, 1970, 4 dozen years ago today.

On March 7, 1979, an overflow crowd of 400 watched as a man in dark glasses and a purple suit approach the grand piano wedged between the desks and podium of the Georgia House of Representatives. Seconds later, Ray Charles launched into Georgia on My Mind, one of the most celebrated songs of his career. The song that Ray had taken to the top of the pop charts now had a new honor – the state song of the state of Georgia. That designation became official just a few weeks later on April 24, 1979. This FM broadcast catches him a few months later in 1979, on October 23, 39 years ago today, in Austin Texas. Southside Johnny - 1978-10-23 - Amherst, MA (SBD)

The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. This FM broadcast captures them taking the Jersey sound to Massachusetts on October 23, 1978, 4 decades ago today.

Elvis Costello - 1977-10-22 – Leicester, UK (SBD)

By the fall of 1977, the punk/new wave movement had gained serious momentum in England. Stiff Records, one of the bastions of promoting these 2 new genres, had launched the 1977 Live Stiffs Tour, featuring Ian Dury and Rockpile, 2 of the leading lights of this new rock sound. Also on the bill was a short, scrawny, bespectacled lad who hardly looked the part of punk rocker. As we know, looks can be deceiving and such was the case here. Elvis Costello and the Attractions took the tour by storm. Playing tunes from his debut album My Aim Is True and the soon to be released This Year’s Model (quite a one two punch for an artist’s first 2 discs), Costello demonstrated that he was the new leader of the latest British musical invasion. This soundboard from October 22, 1977, 41 years ago today, from Leicester, England, captures Costello at a high point during the Live Stiffs tour. Within weeks, he would be on Saturday Night Live, changing songs mid stream, surprising the producers, and getting himself banned from that show for a dozen years. The Ramones - 1977-10-21 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD)

To paraphrase, Mr. Dylan, in the mid 1970s, the times they were a changing, as rock began to move in a variety of directions as many of the mainstays of the 1960's stepped out of the limelight. A musician from NJ, named Bruce Springsteen, made the covers of Time and Newsweek in the same week in 1975, gaining nationwide recognition for his unique songs and lyrics focusing on the plight of the common man. Singer-song writers, such as Elton John, Billy Joel, and James Taylor, were emerging, with a less hard edge to their music. Elton would eventually establish another rock trend of the 70's (and beyond) - the rock star as the over the top, flamboyant cultural icon. Glossy, highly polished album oriented rock emerged, with bands like Fleetwood Mac, Boston and the Eagles creating and riding that wave to produce multi-platinum selling albums. Bands such as Yes, ELP and Genesis, leaders of the progressive rock movement, added layers of instrumentation and technology to their music, moving it away from traditional rock and roll. Amidst all of this change, The Ramones emerged, adding, their own spin to the all the other transformations in the rock world in the mid 70’s. In 1974, The Ramones played at CBGB’s, the now legendary and defunct rock club in the Bowery District in NY, 74 times! They signed their first recording contract in 1975, and released their first album in 1976. Their hard driving, straight ahead, stripped down, anti-establishment, incessant form of rock, with no song longer than 2 ½ minutes, coupled with the black leather jackets, t-shirt and jean wardrobe, combined to usher in a new era of rock music, called Punk. The Ramones were the clear leaders of the punk movement in NY, taking a stand against the mid 70’s trends toward overblown and/or overly sentimental rock songs and albums. This soundboard recording captures the band in Los Angeles on October 21, 1977, 41 years ago today, just a few weeks prior to the release of their 3rd album, Rocket To Russia, which featured tacks such as Sheena Is A Punk Rocker, Rockaway Beach and their cover of Surfin Bird!

After playing their historic 3 night run at the Pyramids in Egypt in September 1978 (we brought you one of those shows last month), the Grateful Dead returned home to San Francisco to play a 5 night stand at Winterland on October 17, 18, 20, 21 and 22. The last 2 nights of that run were officially released on Road Trips Volume 4, entitled From Egypt With Love. Today we bring you night 3 of the run, from O tober 20, 1978, 4 decades ago this very day.  The show is notable for a rare two song encore, Johnny B Goode followed by Shakedown Street, the title track from the Dead's then current album release.

Joe Cocker - 1969-10-19 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

For Joe Cocker, 1969 was a whirlwind year that put his career on the map. In April, he released his first album, With A Little Help From My Friends. The title track, of course, was a classic Beatles tune, and Cocker’s unique version met with the approval of the Fab Four. The album went gold and climbed to #35 on the Billboard charts. Then in August, he appeared at Woodstock, playing a 13 song set on Sunday afternoon, August 17. In November, he released his 2nd album, which included 2 more Beatles covers, Something and She Came In through The Bathroom Window, as well as the classic tune, Delta Lady. This soundboard recording captures Cocker right before the release of his 2nd disc, on October 19, 1969, 49 years ago today, at the Fillmore West in San Francisco.

The Byrds - 1970-10-18 - Storrs, CT (SBD)

On September 14, 1970, The Byrds released the album Untitled, a double disc featuring both live and studio material. The disc was a critical and commercial success, being heralded as a return to form for the band. The line-up for the album, original member Roger McGuinn alongside Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Skip Battin, would turn out to have the longest tenure of any configuration of The Byrds  They had also begun to build a reputation for stellar live performances, and the shows during the fall of 1970 would be no exception. This soundboard recordings captures The Byrds on October 18, 1970, 48 years ago today, in Storrs, CT.

Bruce Springsteen - 1975-10-17 - Los Angeles, CA (FM)

On August 13, 1975, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band began a five-night, 10-show stand at New York's Bottom Line. The engagement, broadcast live on WNEW-FM, attracted major media attention and convinced many skeptics that Springsteen was for real. Decades later, Rolling Stone magazine would name the stand as one of the 50 Moments That Changed Rock and Roll. As the Bottom Line run ended, the album Born To Run was released. The album reached number 3 on the Billboard charts, and while there were no hit singles, the title track, Thunder Road, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out and Jungleland became staples of album oriented rock radio stations. Born to Run is now considered by many critics and fans to be among the best rock and roll albums of all time and Springsteen's finest work (Rolling Stone had it at 18 on its list o fthe 500 greatest albums of all time). Amidst all this publicity and attention. Bruce continued his small club tour, taking up residence at the Roxy in LA in mid October. This FM broadcast captures the early show from the Roxy on October 17, 1975, 43 years ago today. Ten days later, Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek. Santana – 1978-10-16 – Bottom Line, NY (FM)

In October 1978, Santana released the album Inner Secrets, a move way from his Latin infused roots toward more album oriented rock. While some fans were upset by the change, others embraced the album, especially the powerful rockers such as Open Invitation, One Chain, and Well Alright. Just go to Amazon, read the reviews and you’ll see the schism among fans of the band in regards to this album. Clearly, Santana was at a crossroads in his career at this point, trying to find a way to gain more commercial success while not completely abandoning the style for which he had gained critical acclaim. Perhaps that explains why when he released the album in October 1978, he chose to play a show at the Bottom Line in NY, a small intimate venue in which audience and artist can easily connect. This WNEW-FM broadcast captures that show, from October 16, 1978, 4 decades ago  today. On October 16, 1970, 4 dozen years ago today, the Amchitka Concert, took place in Vancouver, British Columbia.  The story behind the concert typifies the "we can change the world - let’s put on a show" attitude of the late 1960s and early 1970s.  he organizer, Irving Stowe, a lawyer and founding member of the environmental organization Greenpeace, wanted to raise money to send a protest boat to Amchitka Island in the Aleutians, where the U.S. government was conducting nuclear tests. Stowe knew nothing about concert promotion, but his previous fundraising strategy, selling buttons on the streets of Vancouver, had earned predictably meager returns. “It seemed an insane, outlandish idea,” Stowe’s daughter, Barbara Stowe, said of her late father’s plan. “We had no money. No ties with big-name musicians. But he was a stubborn man.” Stowe first contacted the era’s go-to musical conscience, Joan Baez.  The singer’s schedule didn’t permit an appearance but Baez sent Stowe a letter enclosed with a $1,000 donation and the phone number of Joni Mitchell, who agreed to perform. Then Phil Ochs and Chilliwack came on board, as did, at Mitchell’s request, her then-boyfriend, James Taylor, whose album “Sweet Baby James” was starting to break big.  Somehow, from out of nowhere, another rock concert fro a social cause had emerged.  This soundboard recording captures JTs portion of the show that helped spark rock's on going commitment to Greenpeace.

Cream - 1967-10-15 - Detroit, MI (SBD)

In March of 1967, Cream made their first US appearance, playing 9 shows at the RKO Theater in NY as part of radio DJ Murray the K’s "Music in the 5th Dimension" concert series. They then went into the studio in NY to record their second album, Disraeli Gears, which, when released in November, would hit number 4 on the US Billboard charts. Disraeli Gears featured Cream classics such as Sunshine of Your Love, Strange Brew, SWLABR and Tales of Brave Ulysses. Cream returned to the states in August 1967 to launch their first US tour, playing multiple nights at some of the classic venues in rock history, including the Fillmore West, the Café Au Go Go and The Whiskey A Go Go (go here for complete tour details). Despite the upcoming release of Disraeli Gears, Cream generally only played Tales of Brave Ulysses and Sunshine of Your Love from that album during these shows. Performing to the counter culture right after the Summer of Love, Cream started to stretch out on stage, with some songs reaching 20 minutes. Extended jams in numbers like Spoonful, NSU, Toad and Sweet Wine became live favorites for both the band and their audience. This soundboard recording from Detroit from October 15, 1967, 51 years ago today, captures the last night of that historic tour. By the way, the more I read about this bootleg, the more I’m led to believe that this might be the absolute best sounding recording of Cream you will find. Moreover, it also appears that this may capture the band at their absolute peak, jamming perfectly, taking chances, exploring the boundaries of rock and roll as no one had up to that point. Traffic - 1971-10-14 - Boston, MA (HQ Aud)

In October 1971, Traffic traveled to the US after spending most of the first 9 months of the year on tour in England. Their arrival in the states brought with it some new additions to their set list. The band played several new songs, including Light Up Or Leave Me Alone, Hidden Treasure, Rock ‘n’ Roll Stew, Many A Mile and Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, the last of which would be the title track of the band’s forthcoming album, which was released in November. The album had been recorded in London in September, right before the band headed across the pond. The only song from Low Spark not included in the band’s performances was Rainmaker. The album climbed to #7 on the Billboard charts, and went gold by February 1972, thought it would be another 14 years before the album went platinum in 1996! Critical opinion of the album varied. Famed critic Robert Christgau gave the disc a B, though his comments were harsher than his grade, as he led off the review by stating that “These guys waste their talent”. The All Music Guide, on the other hand, pronounced that Low Spark “marked the commercial and artistic apex of the second coming of Traffic”. Pop Matters offered yet another viewpoint, calling it “an album that’s easy to listen to over and over, but one that seldom shows up on “best of” lists.” This high quality audience recording from October 14, 1971, 47 years ago today, captures one of the earliest live performances of the songs from the Low Spark disc. This relatively short show from Los Angeles on October 14, 1978, 4 decades ago today, was for an audience of MCA record executives and employees to debut the new A Single Man album. As such, Elton plays several songs from that disc that he did not usually perform live, and does more than his fair share of of clowning around with the crowd.

Dire Straits - 1978-10-14 - Paris, France (SBD)

When Dire Straits released their self-titled debut album in February 1978, the music industry barely paid attention. Fortunately for the band, Karin Berg, working at Warner Brothers in New York did. With her backing, the band was booked to tour as the opening act for the Talking Heads. The success of that tour led to a US recording contract with Warner, followed by the release of their debut album worldwide. The disc would reach the top 10 in every country in Europe, while climbing to number 2 on the US charts. In October 1978, when Dire Straits launched the 2nd leg of their fall tour, it marked their first extended run of shows outside of the UK. The band visited France, Germany Belgium and the Netherlands, promoting both their debut album and the single, Sultans of Swing. This soundboard recording captures the band in Paris during that tour on October 14, 1978, 4 decades ago today.

Warren Zevon - 1976-10-13 - Cleveland OH (FM)

Born in Chicago in 1947, Warren Zevon moved to Los Angeles when he was still a teenager. When hquit high school, he moved to New York, and later to Spain, to pursue a musical career, but by 1975, was back in LA. He roomed there with then unknowns Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. He also collaborated with Jackson Browne, who helped produce Zevon’s 1976 self titled album. Zevon also wrote songs for Linda Ronstadt, including Hasten Down the Wind, Carmelita, Poor Poor Pitiful Me, and Mohammed's Radio. In 1978, Zevon became an "overnight sensation" when he released Excitable Boy, an album produced by Browne and guitarist Waddy Wachtel. The disc met with both critical and commercial success. Rolling Stone called the album one of the most significant releases of the 1970s. The disc went to #8 on the Billboard charts, and spawned the classic single Werewolves of London, which reached #21 on the charts. This FM broadcast captures Zevon before that commercial success, playing primarily the songs he wrote for Ronstadt, in Cleveland on October 10, 1976,  42 years ago today.

Crosby & Nash - 1971-10-11 - Los Angeles, CA (HQ Audience)

In 1998, David Crosby and Graham Nash released Another Stoney Evening, a live concert album capturing their performance on October 10, 1971 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. Perhaps because they released the disc on Grateful Dead records, they were able to get away with a title that would have appalled most record company executives. The ‘stoney” in the title, of course, is a reference to the drug culture of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Moreover, the duo actually based the album’s name on the title of a very famous bootleg released by Trademark of Quality (TMQ), one of the earliest underground companies to ever issue bootleg recordings. That bootleg, which you can download right here, entitled A Very Stony Evening, featured Crosby and Nash on October 11, 1971, 47 years ago today, a day after the show that was officially released.
