The 2004 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremomy was a rare one as almost every inductee not only showed up, but also played live.  The only one not present was the late George Harrison, but the tribute to him produced one of the iconic moments in the Hall's history.  Harrison was inducted by his Traveling Wilbury partners Tom Petty & Jeff Lynne, who performed Handle With Care.  They were them joined by Prince and Harrison's son, Dhani, for a breathtaking version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. How good was it - well cleveland.com ranked it as the best Induction Ceremony performance of all time.

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on March 15, 2000, 20 years ago today..  A complete list of inductees is provided below.

In November 1971, Traffic released the disc, The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys, the band;s 5th studio album. The album climbed to #7 on the Billboard charts, and went gold by February 1972, thought it would be another 24 years before the album went platinum in 1996! Critical opinion of the album varied. Famed critic Robert Christgau gave the disc a B, though his comments were harsher than his grade, as he led off the review by stating that “These guys waste their talent”. The All Music Guide, on the other hand, pronounced that Low Spark “marked the commercial and artistic apex of the second coming of Traffic”. Pop Matters offered yet another viewpoint, calling it “an album that’s easy to listen to over and over, but one that seldom shows up on “best of” lists.” Today we bring you an excellent soundboard of Traffic from February 21, 1972, 52 years ago today! This soundboard recording captures Traffic just 3 months after the album's release, on February 21, 1972, 52 years ago today.

- Opened for The Grateful Dead
- Jerry Garcia played guitar on Dear Mr. Fantasy

As legend goes, Steve Winwood reformed Traffic in 1994 after a Dead Head left a message for Bob Weir suggesting that if would be “cool” if the Grateful Dead and Traffic toured together! I’m not quite sure how true that is, but Traffic did come back together in 1994, and they were the lead-in band for the Grateful Dead’s summer tour! This sounboard captures them in East Rutherford on August  3, 1994, 29 years ago today, with Jerry Garcia sitting in during Dear Mr. Fantasy. Of course, the connection between the 2 bands goes back to the 1960s/1970s, including a legendary show at the Fillmore East on November 16, 1970 that long was believed to have taken place a week later at the Anderson Theater. (go here for the full details).   In the 1980s, the Dead added two Steve Winwood compositions to their set lists, Dear Mr. Fantasy and Gimme Some Lovin. Those songs left the band’s live repertoire, however, with the passing of Brent Mydland in 1990.

Traffic's Winwood also has connections to both the Allman brotehrs and The Band. In 2012, Winwood appeared at the Mountain Jam festival, where he was joined on stage by Warren Haynes. He also played The Weigh as part of his set, in honor of Levon Helm who passed way earlier that year.  The in 2013, Winwood served as the opening act for the Allman Brothers summer tour. In 2017, he headlined the Peach Festival, which had been founded by Greg Allman, for a series of shows just months after Greg's death, held as a tribute to the late singer.  In 1997, Winwood, along with James Taylor, Sheryly Crow and Jakob Sylan, all backed Leveon Helm on The Weight at the 1997 VH1 Honors broadcast. Some 15 years later, he and fellow Blin Faith alum Eric Clapton, appeared on Robbie Robertson's 2011 album How To Become Clairvoyant.

As the Summer of Love dawned in June 1967, the band released its first single, Paper Sun, which went to #5 on the charts in the UK, though it barely cracked the top 100 at #94 in the US. The band set to work its first album, Mr. Fantasy which was released in December 1967. This FM broadcast captures the band a year after the Summer of Love, and 54 years ago today, in London, on June 24, 1968.

The disc went to #8 on the UK charts but only reached the #88 position in the US. In the 1970s, however, while many Traffic albums failed to chart in the UK, the band achieved extraordinary success across the pond. Once Steve Winwood reformed the band after his brief stint with Blind Faith, Traffic would have 4 consecutive top 10 albums on the Billboard charts between 1970 and 1974. This soundboard recording captures Traffic in London just about a year before they broke up for almost 2 decades, on May 17, 1974, 47 years today.

1970s - #3: After Blind Faith disbanded in late 1969, Steve Winwood went to work on what he thought would be a solo album. Partway through the recording, he invited former Traffic band mates Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood to join him. Traffic had been reborn, and the album that would emerge from this reunion was the legendary disc, John Barleycorn Must Die, This soundboard, from November 18, 1970, a half century ago today. years ago today, captures them on their 2nd US tour that year in support of the album, from the Fillmore East in NY. The band had recently expanded from a trio into a quartet again, with the addition of Blind Faith member Rick Grech on bass. The change not only added a welcome bottom end to the material, but freed up Steve Winwood and Chris Wood to improvise more on the group's newer songs. In fact, Winwood, usually thought of as a keyboard player, takes several turns on guitar during this show, demonstrating just what a multi-talented performer he truly was.

I’m not quite sure how true that is, but Traffic did come back together in 1994, and they were the lead-in band for the Grateful Dead’s summer tour! One stop they made, however, without the Dead, was at the Woodstock 1994 Festival in Saugerties, NY on August 14, 1994, 26 years ago today. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the original Woodstock festival, the concert was originally scheduled on August 13 and 14 and billed as “2 more days of peace and music”, borrowing from the 1969 concert’s promotional posters. A 3rd day was eventually added on August 12. Traffic played before a crowd of 350,000, who despite the rain and mud, conditions similar to those in 1969, were mostly well behaved and embodied the spirit shown by those who attended the original Woodstock.

Traffic/Jerry Garcia Connections
  • As mentioned above, Traffic led in for the Grateful Dead's 1994 summer tour.
  • Of course, the connection between the 2 bands goes back to the 1960s/1970s, including a legendary show at the Fillmore East on November 16, 1970 that long was believed to have taken place a week later at the Anderson Theater. (go here for the full details)

While reviews of the disc weren't all that kind, it still climbed to #6 on the Billboard album charts. The band was also in the process of taping concerts for an eventual live album, which would be entitled On The Road. As such, they augmented their 3 piece line up with 3 members of the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. The MSR had provided backing on some of the greatest rock and R&B hits of the 1960s and '70s, including many classic Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield records. In October 1971, Traffic traveled to the US after spending most of the first 9 months of the year on tour in England. Their arrival in the states brought with it some new additions to their set list. The band played several new songs, including Light Up Or Leave Me Alone, Hidden Treasure, Rock ‘n’ Roll Stew, Many A Mile and Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, the last of which would be the title track of the band’s forthcoming album, which was released in November. The album had been recorded in London in September, right before the band headed across the pond. The only song from Low Spark not included in the band’s performances was Rainmaker. The album climbed to #7 on the Billboard charts, and went gold by February 1972, thought it would be another 14 years before the album went platinum in 1996! Pop Matters offered yet another viewpoint, calling it “an album that’s easy to listen to over and over, but one that seldom shows up on “best of” lists.” This high quality audience recording from October 14, 1971, 47 years ago today, captures one of the earliest live performances of the songs from the Low Spark disc. According to legend, Traffic’s return in 1994 is directly related to the Grateful Dead. Supposedly, a very enthusiastic Deadhead left a voice mail for Bob Weir suggesting that it would be cool if the Dead and Traffic toured together.Whether or not that story’s true, the fact is that Traffic did serve as lead-in band for the Grateful Dead’s 1994 summer tour. 1970 - For years, soundboard tapes circulated of sets by Traffic and The Grateful Dead at what was believed to be a concert on November 23, 1970 at the Anderson Theater in New York City. Over the years, however, evidence has emerged that indicates that these shows actually took place on November 16 of that year, 44 years ago today, at the Fillmore East! That evidence, detailed in the notes that accompanied the tapes of these 2 shows, includes the following:
  1. Traffic has been confirmed, in a letter written by the Kleinhans Music Hall, as having played at the Kleinhans Music Hall, Buffalo, NY on 11-23-70. This firmly places them out of New York City on that date.
  2. It would hardly be surprising for Traffic to have been in New York City on 11-16-1970, since they played the Fillmore East on 11-18 and 11-19. (The 11-18 show is posted on this blog).
  3. Bill Graham introduces the Dead. As Bill Graham owned the Fillmore East, and was not friendly with the owner of the Anderson Theater, it seems inconceivable these shows could have taken place at the Anderson Theater.
  4. After Bob Weir sings the Frozen Logger, several people on stage can be heard attempting to get Jack Casady to join in saying, "Hey Casady, why don't you play" and "Hey Jack, hey Jack, c'mon up". Hot Tuna definitely played on at the Fillmore on 11-16 and they are not known to have played at the Anderson Theater.
  5. An eyewitness who attended the 11-16-1970 Fillmore show clearly recalls Steve Winwood and Jorma Kaukonen sitting in with the Dead.
  6. Music was commonly played over the P.A. between sets at the Fillmore to promote upcoming shows. During this show, excerpts from Elton John singing Honky Tonk Women were played as Elton would be at the Fillmore the following weekend, November 20th and 21st, as the warm up for Leon Russell.
  7. On page 382 in his book Long Strange Trip, Dennis McNally mentions this show as being from the Fillmore East, 11/16/70.
So all signs point, therefore, to Traffic and the Grateful Dead sharing the stage not on 11-23 at the Anderson as indicated on the artwork, but on 11-16 at the Fillmore. Regardless of the location, both these shows feature exceptional performances by 2 legendary bands. Download the set from Traffic now, then come back later today to grab the Dead’s portion of the show.

In 1994, Steve Winwood put Traffic back together, the story of which we’ll save for when we discuss the connection to the Grateful Dead down below. This HQ Audience tape captures the newly reformed Traffic on September 22, 1994, 19 years ago today. Download this one to hear how Traffic sounded after an almost 2 decade hiatus!

The Traffic/Grateful Dead Connection
According to legend, Traffic’s return in 1994 is directly related to the Grateful Dead. Supposedly, a very enthusiastic Deadhead left a voice mail for Bob Weir suggesting that it would be cool if the Dead and Traffic toured together. Whether or not that story’s true, the fact is that Traffic did serve as lead-in band for the Grateful Dead’s 1994 summer tour. Of course, the connection between the 2 bands goes back to the 1960s/1970s, including a legendary show at the Fillmore East on November 16, 1970 that long was believed to have taken place a week later at the Anderson Theater. (go here for the full details) In the 1980s, the Dead added to Steve Winwood compositions to their set lists, Dear Mr. Fantasy and Gimme Some Lovin. Those songs left the band’s live repertoire, however, with the passing of Brent Mydland in 1990.

As legend goes, Steve Winwood reformed Traffic in 1994 after a Dead Head left a message for Bob Weir suggesting that if would be “cool” if The Dead and Traffic toured together! I’m not quite sure how true that is, but Traffic did come back together in 1994, and they were the lead-in band for the Grateful Dead’s summer tour! This soundboard recording captures Traffic during that summer tour  on July 29, 1994, 19 years ago today.
