Rolling Stones - 1981-09-25 - Philadelphia, PA (SBD)

As discussed in earlier posts on this blog, the Rolling Stones returned to the top of the rock world in 1978 with the release of Some Girls, one of the finest albums of their career. They continued that momentum with their 2 follow up albums, Emotional Rescue in 1980 and Tattoo You in 1981. Both hit number 1 on the Billboard charts, the last 2 Stones albums to do so. Tattoo You also spawned the last Stones single to reach as high as number 2 on the charts, the upbeat, infectious rocker Start Me Up. Both album and single were released in August 1981, just weeks before the Stones launched a massive worldwide tour. That tour, when it was done, would gross over $50 million with an average ticket price of $16. It also featured one of the first examples of corporate sponsorship for rock tours, as Jovan fragrances paid $1 million for the rights to put their name on the tickets. The Stones sold many of those tickets by mail order to hinder scalpers. They received over 4 million ticket requests for the opening two shows of the tour at RFK Stadium in Philadelphia. The Who - 2000-09-24 - West Palm Beach, FL (SBD)

On June 6, 2000, the Who launched a full scale tour of the US and the UK. You could say there was just a touch of irony in the fact that a band which had played their farewell tour in 1982, and whose lead singer had once written “hope I die before I get old, was still on the road in the new millennium. Of course, reunions and post-farewell tours were nothing new for The Who. From their appearance at Live Aid in 1985 to their 1989 tour in celebration of the band's 25th anniversary to a 1996 tour performing Quadrophenia to additional shows in 1997 and 1999, the Who had continually found their way back to the concert stage. The 2000 tour featured The Who as a 5 piece ensemble, with original members Roger Daltrey, Pete Towshend and John Entwistle joined by John Bundrick on keyboard and Zach (son of Ringo!) Starkey on drums. The tour, which stretched into 2001, also was the last that included John Entwistle. On June 27, 2002, just days before their next US tour was due to begin, Entwistle was found dead from a heart attack at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. Cocaine had played a role in triggering the fatal attack. This soundboard recording, therefore, from September 24, 2000, 14 years ago today, captures the band on its last ride with its original bassist. Macca had permission from the local police to take to the rooftop of the El Capitan Theatre to play a free concert for the masses, some who waited 10 hours to get a front row seat! The crowd was so large that at one point Sir Paul asked “You all right back there… in Santa Monica?” the fans who appeared to be miles away.

I saw the Grateful Dead 50 times between 1977 and 1995, but didn't catch a single show in 1982.  I was in grad school at the time, working on my MBA, with lots of night  classes so I couldn't catch many concerts that year.  In any event, I don't have much first hand knowledge of the Dead from that year, but  I do know that they debuted a host of new tunes, such as Throwin' Stones, Touch Of Grey, and West LA Fade Away which would eventually appear on their only top 10 album, In The Dark, which wouldn't be released until 1987, 5 years later! Here’s another “Same Tour, Different Show” entry that reflects a different time in the music world, when bands played 2 shows in one night! On September 2, 1968, The Doors flew out of embark on a 17 day tour of Europe flying out of Kennedy International Airport in Queens, NY to launch their first European tour. The band’s 3rd album, Waiting for The Sun, which had been released in July had gone to #1 on the US charts, as did the single, Hello I Love You. This soundboard recording captures the early show in Stockholm, Sweden on the last night of the tour on September 20, 1968, 46 years ago today. The Band - 1984-09-19 - New York, NY (SBD) (early)

In June 1983, some 6 ½ years after the Last Waltz, The Band reunited. Well, at least 4/5 of the original group did, as Robbie Robertson choose to follow his own path. Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Richard Manuel played a series of small clubs in the summer of 1983, followed by a short run of shows in Japan in August, after which they launched an extended East Coast tour in the fall. The reunion was deemed a success, and the quartet went back out on the road in early 1984, playing almost continuously until September of that year. This soundboard recording captures The Band near the end of that run, on September 19, 1984, 35 years ago today, in  New York at the Lone Star Cafe. As mentioned in numerous other posts, the Lone Star would become a home away from home for The Band in the 1980s and 1990s. U2 - 1987-09-18 - Boston, MA (SBD)

As the 1980s progressed, U2 moved from their new wave/dance roots toward a more serious and complex musical style. The albums War in 1983 and The Unforgettable Fire in 1984 expanded the band’s audience beyond the UK. Their set at Live Aid in 1985 brought them worldwide acclaim and positioned them to headline the 1986 Amnesty International Tour. None of that could have prepared the band or the music world, however, for what transpired in 1987 when they released their 5th album, The Joshua Tree. The album was filled with lyrics and music that, in Rolling Stone’s words, turned “spiritual quests and political struggles into uplifting stadium sing-alongs.” In the US, the disc debuted at #7 on the Billboard charts, then quickly climbed to #1, where it stayed for 9 weeks. The album yielded the band’s first two #1 singles, With or Without You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, as well as its first 2 Grammy Awards. In April 1987, the band became just the 4th act to appear on the cover of Time Magazine, demonstrating that their influence had transcended the music world. Santana - 1974-09-18 - Las Vegas, NV (SBD)

In the mid 1970s, Carlos Santana, his band, and his music all underwent dramatic changes. He married Deborah King, he daughter of the late blues singer and guitarist, Saunders King. Santana also became a fan of fusion guitarist John McLaughlin, recording an album with him entitled Love, Devotion, Surrender. McLaughlin also introduced Santana to his guru, Sri Chimmoy, an Indian spiritualist, who accepted Carlos as a disciple and christened him as Devadip, meaning "The lamp, light and eye of God." In addition, Carlos recruited a new band, as he had to replace Greg Rolle and Neil Schon who left after recording the album Caravanserai. Through all this change, one thing remained constant, Santana's ability to light up a concert arena, as evidence in this soundboard recording from Las Vegas on September 18, 1974, 4 decades ago today.
