1990s - #5: When your debut album goes to #3 on the Billboard charts, and wins 3 Grammys, as Tuesday Night Music Club did, you've established quite a standard for future releases. For Sheryl Crow, however, that hardly seemed to be an issue. In 1996, her self-titled second disc went to # 6 on the charts,earned her 2 more Grammys, and included such hits as Everyday Is A Winding Road, If It Makes You Happy and Hard To Make A Stand. The album also received significant critical acclaim. For example, the Village Voice ranked it at #26 in its list of the best albums of 1996. Rolling Stone selected it as one of the essential albums of the 1990s while also naming it the 44th greatest album of all time by a female artist. This soundboard recording captures Sheryl on January 31, 1997, 22 years ago today, on the renowned music program Austin City Limits promoting her self-titled disc. By the way, Austin City Limits, which was launched on October 14, 1974 with a performance by Willie nelson, is the longest-running music program in television history. It’s the only television show to have been awarded the Presidential Medal of the Arts, and was recently recognized by Time magazine as one of the 10 most influential music programs of all time. 1960s - #5: In September 1966, Jimi Hendrix, who had been struggling to find any musical success in the US, moved to London hoping new manager Chas Chandler could help him breakthrough. Chandler recruited Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience was born. Hendrix played his way through the club scene in Europe, dazzling audiences and  felow musicians, such as Clapton, McCartney and Lennon, alike. By December 29, Jimi's version of Hey Joe had entered the UK charts, and would eventually peak at #6.  Success in the US would have to wait until after his incendiary (in more ways than one since he lit his guitar on fire) in June at Monterrey Pop, but Hendrix had arrived.  This FM broadcast captures him right as about the time Hey Joe was climbing the UK charts, on the January 30, 1967, 52 years ago today.

The Black Crowes - 1995-01-29 - London, UK (FM)

1990s - #4: In November 1994, The Black Crowes released their third album, entitled Amorica. The album cover, which featured a picture taken from a 1976 bi-centennial edition of Hustler that showed a bikini bottom that failed to cover all of a women’s pubic hair, generated a host of controversy. Some retailers refused to carry the album until the record company re-issued the disc with an alternate cover. Despite the controversy - or maybe because of it - Amorica climbed to #11 on the Billboard charts. This FM broadcast captures the Black Crowes on tour in support of their controversial album at the Royal Albert Hall in London on January 29, 1995, 2 dozen years ago today. By the way, this is a composite of 2 separate Westwood One radio broadcasts which provide 15 of the 18 tracks played by the Crowes that night.

Steely Dan - 2000-01-28 - New York, NY (SBD)

2000s - #5: On February 29, 2000, a rare date that comes around just every 4 years, Steely Dan did something even rarer, as they released their first studio album in 2 decades, since Gaucho in 1980. That disc, entitled Two Against Nature (clearly a reference to Fagan and Becker's tendency to not follow the norm)not only went to number 6 on the Billboard charts, but also garnered 4 Grammy Awards, including Album of The Year. The Album of the Year victory was major surprise as they defeated Eminen and his highly controversial album The Marshall Mathers LP. In anticipation of the album release and tour, about a month earlier, Steely Dan recorded a live show for PBS on January 28. 2000, 19 years ago today, which was to be aired in on March 1. This soundboard recording captures that PBS special in its entirety, which features numerous tunes from Two Against Nature as well as a host of Steely Dan classics.

Lou Reed - 1973-01-27 - New York, NY (SBD)

1970s - #5: In November 1972, Lou Reed released the album Transformer, which was co-produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson. Unlike his debut solo album, which was largely ignored by fans and critics, Transformer proved to be a commercial and critical success. The album reached #29 on the Billboard charts in the US and did even better in the UK, reaching the #13 position. Rolling Stone gave the album a 4 star review, and critical acclaim for the disc has grown with the passage of time. For example, NME ranked it as the #55 album of all time and Rolling Stone rated it at #194 on its list of the 500 best albums in history. The single, Walk on The Wild Side, which became one of Reed’s signature songs, went to #16 of the charts in the US and to #10 in the UK. The song’s very clever lyrics also slipped some rather risqué references past the radio censors! This concert catches Lou Reed just over 2 months after the release of transformer, at Alice Tully Hall in New York, on January 27, 1973, 46 years ago today. Alice Tully Hall is part of Lincoln Center, home of operas and ballets, and was probably not fully prepared for the likes of Lou Reed, his fans, and his music! In any event, download this one to hear Reed play tunes from what would become the defining album of his career.

Van Morrison - 1984-01-26 - Cannes, France (SBD)

19780s - #5: Van Morrison’s 1978 album, Wavelength, was easily one of the most “radio friendly” of his long, storied career, thanks to tunes such as Kingdom Hall, Hungry For Your Love and the title track. Of course, in typical Van The Man fashion, he immediately moved in another direction, and his next 4 discs would be far less accessible to the causal fan. Writer Erik Hage commented that after Wavelength’s commercial success, Morrison was inspired to "return to something deeper, to once again take up the quest for music that was spontaneous, meditative, and transcendent, music that satisfied the other side of his artistic nature. His 1979 disc, Into The Music, would begin to explore the themes of spirituality and the healing power of music, two ideas that would recur again and again in his work throughout the 1980s. In 1980, he released Common One, an album of just 6 songs. The disc received scathing reviews at the time, but over the years critics have reassessed the album. Allmusic, for example recently wrote’ “No wonder the rock critics of the time didn't get it; this is music outside the pop mainstream, and even Morrison's own earlier musical territory. But it retains its trancelike power to this day.” His next album, Beautiful Vision in 1982 marked a return to the music of his Northern Irish Roots while 1983’s Inarticulate Speech of The Heart was focused on creating music for meditation. In writing about Morrison’s work in the late 1970’s/early 80’s, Rolling Stone noted that each album reflected a unique spiritual theme - "rebirth (Into the Music), deep contemplation and meditation, (Common One); ecstasy and humility (Beautiful Vision); and blissful, mantra like languor (Inarticulate Speech of the Heart).” Songs from each of those 4 discs are featured in this FM broadcast from January 26, 1984, 35 years ago today. Van’s quest for more mystical, spiritual and transcendent music that “satisfied his soul” is evidenced by the lack of earlier material, such as songs from Moondance or Wavelength, in the set list. Download this one to hear a different side of Van The Man, a side which would reach its peak later in the decade with such albums as A Sense of Wonder; No Guru, No Method, No Teacher; Poetic Champions Compose; and Avalon Sunset.

Grateful Dead - 1969-01-25 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

1960s - #4: Every now & then here at So Many Roads, wee like to bring you some Grateful Dead from 1969, a year in which the band closed out the "Psychedelic 60's" with live music that embodied everything that nickname symbolized, and then some. This show from January 25, 1969, a half century ago today, is one of the precursors to the legendary Fillmore shows in February 1969 that spawned the album Live Dead. an album that critic Robert Christgau rated an A+, writing that "side two of this four-sided set contains the finest rock improvisation ever recorded, and the rest is gently transcendent as usual. Beautifully recorded, too." The entire Fillmore run was later released as a 10 CD box set entitled Fillmore West 1969: The Complete Recordings. So this soundboard gives you a good look at a band building toward some of the peak performances of their career!

The Band - 1994-01-23 - Charleston, WV (FM)

1990s - #3: For a group that had played their supposedly "Last Waltz" in 1976, the years 1993 & 1994 proved to be quite a magical time for The Band. In November 1993, the group released their 8th studio album, Jericho, which included a unique cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City. Original members Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson continued to tour relentlessly, incorporating tunes from the album into their set list. They played at Woodstock 1994 in August, a quarter century after they had played the original festival in 1969. They capped the year by being elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That 1994 class also included John Lennon, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bob Marley, The Animals, Duane Eddy, and one of The Band’s long time touring partners, The Grateful Dead. Eric Clapton, who had long admired the group and cited them as one of the reasons he moved away from the style of music played by Cream, made the induction speech for The Band. This soundboard recording captures The Band in West Virginia a few months after the release of Jericho, on January 23, 1994, 25 years ago today.

1980s - #4: In 1977, Robert Cray formed his first band, with hopes of building a career to match his musical influences Albert Collins, Freddie King and Muddy Waters. The next year, he appeared in the movie, National Lampoon's Animal House as an uncredited bassist in the house party band Otis Day and the Knights. In 1982, he earned his first record contract and began to develop a reputation as a strong live performer. Then in November 1986, he released the album Strong Persuader, and became an “overnight successes”, which of course, was a misnomer if there ever was one. The album climbed to #13 on the Billboard charts, and earned Cray a Grammy. The single from the disc, Smoking Gun, went to #22 on the charts and brought Cray’s music to a wider audience. This FM broadcast captures Cray on tour in support of Strong Persuader in Dallas on January 21, 1987, 32 years ago today. Cray gets a little help from another blues legend for the final 3 songs, the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan!

Buffalo Springfield – 1968-01-20 – Whittier High School (Aud)

1960s - #3: Unfortunately, for rock and roll fans, live tapes of Buffalo Springfield are extremely hard to find. Moreover, the ones we do have aren’t best in terms of sound quality. Such is the case with this bootleg, an audience recording from Whittier High School on January 20, 1968, 48 years ago today. That said, this recording has quite a history behind it. The tape surfaced at the 40th reunion of the school’s Class of 1968. Turns out one of the students had plunked his Sony TC-200 stereo tape recorder on the stage and recorded the entire Buffalo Springfield set, with the exception of the opening song, Rock and Roll Woman. For the full story, go here. In addition, for years confusion has reigned regarding this tape. It is often circulated as The Fillmore West on December 21, 1967, and I almost posted it on that date last month until I did some further research. Moreover, the bootleg Stampede was originally believed to be the Whittier show, but further research uncovered it was actually from the Teen & Twenty Club in Huntington Beach on August 11, 1967. So, this post contains the true Whittier High School show, at which Jim Messina sat in for Bruce Palmer on Bass. Download this one to catch the Springfield in all their glory, just a few months before their last live performance, until the Bridge School reunion in 2010, on May 5, 1968.

The Rock in Rio series, for example, launched in 1985, with 10 nights of shows that attracted 1.4 million people to see headliners Queen, George Benson, Rod Stewart, AC/DC, James Taylor and Yes. Rock in Rio 2 took place in 1991, then it was another 10 years before Rock in Rio took place in 2001. Headliners for the 3rd edition of the festival included Sting, Iron Maiden, REM, Foo Fighters, Britney Spears, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Neil Young. 2000s - #3: Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady first worked together way back in 1965, as members of the Jefferson Airplane. In 1969, while still with the Airplane, they launched a side project called Hot Tuna, an acoustic duo that focused on their blues roots. In 1972, after the Airplane dissolved, Hot Tuna went electric, featuring long instrumental jams in concert. While I'm not a big fan of their electric music, I do find something unique and compelling about acoustic Hot Tuna. This one's a soundboard recording of Jorma and Jack from Anaheim from January 19, 2002, 17 years ago today.

The  Police - 1979-01-18 -Bremen, Germany (SBD)

1970s - #4: In November 1978. The Police released their debut album, Outlandos d’Amour, which immediately flopped. The BBC reacted poorly to the disc's first 2 singles, Can't Stand Losing You and Roxanne, primarily because of the subject matter they dealt with - suicide and prostitution respectively.  The band felt compelled to tour relentlessly in hopes of gaining exposure for themselves and airplay for their songs. The strategy seemed to work, as the album eventually climbed to the #23 position on the Billboard charts in the US, and rose all the way to the #2 position in the UK. In addition, 3 singles from the disc – the aforementioned Roxanne, and Can’t Stand Losing You, plus So Lonely - charted in the top 20 in the UK in 1979. Roxanne also climbed to the #32 spot on the US Billboard charts. This FM broadcast captures the band on January 18, 1979, 4 decades today near the start of the tour that helped put them on the map.

The Who - 1970-01-16 - Paris. France (FM)

1970s - #3: On January 16, 1970, 49 years ago today, The Who launched a European tour, as captured in this FM broadcast, with the intent of recording a live album.  The set lists featured the rock opera Tommy being played in its entirety, usually followed by a trio of classic rockers - Summertime Blues. Shaking All Over, and My Generation.  These shows featured Tommy at its birth -  before the movie, before the stage show, before the symphony performances – just the 4 original members of of the band demonstrating pure power and intensity.  The legendary Live at Leeds disc would emerge from this tour, taped at The penultimate show of the run on  February 14, 1970.

This FM broadcast captures that performance in which Dion provides his take on songs we normally associate with artists such as Bo Diddley, The Allman Brothers, and Eric Clapton!

Counting Crows - 1994-01-12 - New York, NY (SBD)

1990s - #2: Someone must have had a premonition when they asked a then relatively unknown band to fill in for Van Morrison, who skipped his own induction, at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony on January 16, 1993. Later that year, that band released the album August & Everything, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts in the strength of such songs as Mr. Jones, Round here and Rain King. The Counting Crows had arrived. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of their stunning debut disc, in New York on January 12 1994, a quarter century ago today.

1960s - #2: On January 12, 1964, 55 years ago today, The Beatles made their 2nd appearance on the Sunday Night at the Palladium variety show  Their first appearance, on October 13, is often considered as the unofficial start of Beatlemania. Incredibly the crowds outside the Palladium for their second appearance were even greater than the first. This soundboard recording captures that 2nd appearance, which was just a month prior to an even more legendary TV gig - The Ed Sullivan show in the US.

Allman Brothers Band - 1991-01-11 - Tokyo, Japan (SBD)

1990s - #1: As the decade of the 1980s became the 1990s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg Allman’s tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Woody, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. The band's revived popularity even prompted their first tour of Japan in early 1991. This soundboard recording captures the band in Tokyo on January 11, 1991, 28 years ago today.

Grateful Dead - 1970-01-10 - San Diego CA (SBD)

1970s - #2: For the Grateful Dead, 1970 was a year of transition. After the psychedelic intensity of 1969's live shows, captured in the album Live Dead, the band stunned fans and critics alike when they released Workingman's Dead in June 1970, followed by American Beauty in November. These were laid back, Americana-styled albums, featuring carefully crafted tunes, tight harmonies, and folk and country rhythms.  In fact, legend has it that Jerry Garcia had made an arrangement that in return for his playing pedal steel guitar on Teach Your Children, CSNY would teach the members of the Grateful Dead how to sing harmony for those albums. The 2 discs would feature what would become some of the and's best known tunes - Sugar Magnolia, Uncle John's Band, Casey Jones, and Truckin, just to name a few. The band's live concerts also evolved during this period. Songs such Dark Star, St. Stephen, The Eleven, Caution (Do Not On The Tracks) and Cryptical Envelopment which had been at the center of 1969s psychedelic jams played a less prominent role in the band's set lists. This soundboard recording from early in that year, from San Diego on January 10, 1970, 49 years ago today, captures some of that transition as tunes such as Black Peter, Casey Jones and Dire Wolf, all make are included in the set list.

Download Hosts Used At So Many Roads

I know that it can be frustrating to try and download a show, only to find the host doesn't work for you, or is extremely slow.

That said, I simply do not have the time to upload shows to multiple hosts, or split folders into smaller pieces to take advantage of some of the faster hosts. And I simply can't spend the money to pay for faster access or more storage space. In addition, many hosts, such as Mega and Rapidgator, do not work in my area. while others, like Workupload, instantly delete anything I upload.

So, given all that, here's how we are handling all uploads:

• Any show under 500 mb goes up on zippyshare. 

• Anything over 500 mb goes on filefactory   

• We're testing WeTransfer for some re-posts but have concerns since the links only last 7 days

Is it a perfect system? No. But given the fact I have a life beyond this blog, it's the best I can do. Those 2 hosts work for me and are free. I apologize in advance if you have some issues with certain shows, but it's simply impossible to provide universal access given technology, geography, and time constraints.

The Ramones - 1981-01-08 - Hartford, CT (SBD)

1980s - #3: They were the pioneers of punk rock, the resident house band at the legendary New York club CBGB, with long hair and leather jackets, counting off 1 2,3,4 then launching into 2 minute songs that were a wall of noise, rebelling against the excesses that plagued rock and roll in the mid 1970s. They were the Ramones, and, in the words of Trouser Press magazine,“With just four chords and one manic tempo”, they “blasted open the clogged arteries of mid-'70s rock, reanimating the music.” Interestingly, the punk rock sound of the Ramones had its roots in the pop music of the 1960s. The band cited the music of The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Kinks and Rolling Stones, as well as girl groups such as The Ronettes and The Shangri-Las, as key influences. Perhaps then, it’s not surprising that the band agreed to let Phil Spector, who, of course, had worked with both The Beatles and The Ronettes, produce their 1980’s album, End Of The Century. The disc clearly had more of a pop than a punk sound, which sparked controversy with both the band and its fans. That said, it became the Ramone’s highest charting album reaching #44 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbing to # 14 in the UK. Moreover, the band quickly incorporated tunes from the disc into their live shows, as captured in this soundboard recording from January 8, 1981, 38 years ago today. Bruce Springsteen - 1974-01-06 - Cambridge, MA (SBD)

1970s - #1: As the year 1974 began, Bruce Springsteen found himself in Cambridge, MA at a small club called Joe’s Place, for a 3-night stand. Bruce played two 1-hour sets each night, with Peter Johnson & The Manic Depressives (Joe’s unofficial house band), opening for him. It was a far cry from his later career selling out 50,000 seat stadiums at venues all over the world. Just a reminder that even the biggest stars in the business had to start out playing the club scene or as the lead-in for other artists, hoping that at some point, they’d hit the big time. For Springsteen, the release of Born To Run and the covers of Time and Newsweek, were still more 18 months in the future. Amazingly, we have soundboard recording of the 2nd set from the January 6 show, 45 years ago today. Download this one and get a glimpse into Springsteen well before he became a rock legend.

Neil Young - 1983-01-05 - Santa Cruz CA (EX AUD)

1980s- #2: When Neil Young launched a solo tour in Santa Cruz, CA on January 5, 1983, 3 dozen years ago today, he was in between the release of 2 of the most controversial albums of his long storied career. In November 1982, he had released Trans, a synthesizer based disc that baffled almost all of his fans. No one realized at the time that the disc was the product of sound therapy exercises he was dong with his son Ben, who was stricken with cerebral palsy and unable to speak.  Sales of the album were dismal, which infuriated David Geffen, who had guaranteed Neil $1 million per album to lure him away from Reprise Records.  Neil then attempted to release a country disc, entitled Old Ways, but Geffen refused after the failure of Trans, instead demanding a rock & roll album.  Neil responded by releasing Everybody's Rockin' in August 1983, a disc featuring new material and covers that reflected the rockabilly style of early 1950s. The album was yet another critical and commercial disaster.  As a result, Geffen sued Young for $3.3 million, on the grounds that the record and its predecessor were "not commercial", and "musically uncharacteristic of Neil's previous recordings." In other words, Neil was accused of not making Neil Young music! If Neil's albums at the time were experimental, his live playing remained true to his past, as evidenced in this outstanding audience recording from the Santa Cruz show.

1980s - #1: Despite the fanfare surrounding the Last Waltz, including a full length film and a triple disc album, that November 25, 1976 show was not the last time The Band would play live. While Robbie Robertson moved on to a solo career, the other members of the group would work together in various configurations throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The Lone Star Café in New York, famous for a giant, 40 ft high, iguana sculpture that adorned the building, became a home away from home for the re-formed group. The Band played the club on numerous occasions in the late 1980s, often playing 3 or 4 nights in a row, with 2 shows each night, invoking memories of how concerts at venues such as the Fillmore East were scheduled in the Woodstock era! I was fortunate to see them at the Lone Star on October 1, 1985. My table was directly in front of the band, maybe a mere 20 feet away. This set from The Lone Star is about 10 months prior to that night, on January 6, 1985, 35 years ago today. The Beatles - 1962-01-01 - London, UK (SBD)

1960s - #1: On January 1, 1962, 57 years ago this vey day, 4 young lads from Liverpool - John, Paul, George and Pete - found themselves in the London Studios of Decca records, auditioning for their first recording contract.  They played 15 songs, all selected by their new manager Brian Epstein, only 3 of which were Lennon/McCartney originals (Like Dreamers Do, Hello Little Girl and Love Of The Loved).  In just under an hour, the audition was over.  While Decca recorded the session, they eventually made the decision to reject the band, telling them that "guitar groups are on the way out" and that they "have no future in show business".  Several months later, the group met George Martin of EMI Records, replaced Pete with Ringo, and the rest, as they say, is history.  By the way, Decca learned their lesson well. At the recommendation of George Harrison, they signed the Rolling Stones to a recording contract!  Download this stdio recording to catch the Fab Four just months before they started down the road which would make them the most successful and influential band in rock and roll history.
