December's Theme At So Many Roads

For December, our theme was inspired by our November 21 post in which Little Steven and Southside Johnny played their renditions of songs by other artists, including a take on Madonna's Like A Virgin! So this month we'll feature Cover Songs! Every concert in December will include a unique or memorable cover song, some of which you wouldn't expect from the artist being posted (Teaser - wait until you see what John Hiatt plays as an encore in our December 3 post!).

Cover songs have a special place in rock history. Some, such as Jimmy Hendrix's cover of Dylan's All Along The Watchtower, have become the definitive version of the song. Others, such as James Taylor's cover of How Sweet It Is, become so associated with the artist that you may forget its a cover (as I did back in September when I forgot the song was originally done by Marvin Gaye - my bad!) Still others introduced an entire genration to an unfamiliar and under appreciated musical genre, as Eric Clapton's cover of Bob Marley's I Shot The Sheriff did for reggae.

So for all those reasons and more, December is all about Cover Songs.

1989 - Sometime in early 1989, a good friend of mine handed me 2 cassette tapes and told me I had to listen to them. They were 2 recent albums from Van Morrison, Poetic Champions Compose and Avalon Sunset. While I was of course familiar with Van’s recordings, especially the Moondance album, I can’t say that I was deeply into his music. All that changed when I listened to those 2 tapes. The 2 discs, with their combination of spiritualism and Irish mysticism, drawing from sources as diverse as Plato and Yeats, combining rock, jazz and soul in one package, all propelled by his incredible voice, reached into my soul and took up residence there. Three years later, in 1992, when I married my beautiful bride, our wedding song would be Someone Like You from Poetic Champions Compose and the last song played at our reception would be Have I Told You Lately, from Avalon Sunset. Back in 1989, inspired by the 2 albums, I went to see Van live at The Beacon Theatre in New York on November 28, 1989. Of course, having produced albums filled with jazz and soul, Van took a typical turn in another direction and filled his live show with blues, including a guest appearance by John Lee Hooker. By the end of the night, when his band asked “have ye been healed, tonight”. the answer was a resounding yes! While I’ve never been able to find a tape of that show, I do have this soundboard from just 2 nights later at the Beacon, on November 30, 1989, 22 years ago today. The show not only includes another guest spot by John Lee Hooker, but also one by renowned blues pianist Mose Allison, making it a must have for your collection. By the way, this concert is the 500th show we've posted here at So Many Roads, a fitting way to wind up our 2nd anniversary celebration.

U2 - 2001-11-30 - Atlanta, GA (SBD) 

2001 - We have presented numerous shows from U2’s landmark 2001 tour here at So Many Roads, and with good reason. Their landmark tour, which began as a celebration of their award winning album All That You Can't Leave Behind, evolved into a cathartic remembrance and honoring of those we lost in the terrorist attacks on 9-11. Given the fear of additional terror attacks and the heightened security concerns, U2 almost cancelled the fall leg of the tour. They decided to go on, however, knowing that cancelling shows would be a sign that the terrorist had won in their gambit to disrupt the lives of free people around the globe. This soundboard recording captures U2 on November 30, 2001, a dozen years ago today, in Atlanta. Download this one to hear U2 on a tour that helped heal America, a tour that would culminate in a historic performance at the Super Bowl in February 2002.

John Fogerty - 2007-11-29 - Chicago, IL (TV Audio)

2007 - In October 2007, John Fogerty released his first new album in 3 years, the critically acclaimed Revival.  The disc features several songs protesting the Iraq War and the Bush administration, continuing Fogerty's long tradition of political activism in his music.  The album also includes a track titled Creedence Song, ironic for a man who spent a good portion of his solo career distancing himself from the music he made with CCR!  This audio from the television broadcast of the PBS Sound Stage show captures Fogerty on November 11, 2007, just 6 years ago today.  Download this one for an outstanding mix of tunes from Revival, Fogerty's earlier solo work, and of course, CCR classics.

2012 - Here’s our 2nd post at So Many Road to feature the Tedeschi Trucks Band, a high quality audience recording from November 30, 2012, just 1 year ago today. Powered by the dynamic husband and wife duo of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, the band, which formed into 2010, won a Grammy for best blues album for their debut disc, Revelator, in 2011. Their follow up disc, Everybody’s Talking, was a live album released in 2012, that featured their unique take on a host of cover tunes, such as the title track. If you’re not familiar with the band’s work, be sure to download this one - you won’t be disappointed.  By the way - the Deadheads who follow this blog will really enjoy the Sugaree in the encore!

1983 - The on again, off again relationship between Eric Burdon and The Animals was back on in 1983, when the band reunited for an album and a tour. The album Ark, was released in August 1983, and was accompanied by a world tour. Two thirds of the set list was composed of songs from Ark, with the remaining third being tunes from their catalog of 1960s hits. This soundboard recording captures the Animals on November 29, 1983, 3 decades ago today, in Michigan. While the disc did not receive as many accolades as their debut album, Texas Flood, it still climbed to #31 on the Billboard charts. Vaughan and Double Trouble toured North America, Europe, and Australia from February through December 1984 to support Couldn't Stand the Weather. Rockpile - 1980-11-27 - The Ritz, NY (FM)

1980 - When Rockpile started touring together in 1976, its co-leaders, Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds, were signed to different record labels. That prevented the band from releasing an album under its own name. Instead, they were forced to release albums either under Lowe’s name, such as Jesus of Cool and Labor of Lust, or Edmund’s banner, such as Trax on Wax and Repeat When Necessary. In fact, Jesus of Cool and Heart of The City both featured the same version of the song heart of The City, but on the former album, the track featured Lowe’s lead vocals while on the latter, the record company dubbed in Edmund’s voice! When Edmunds finally fulfilled his contractual commitments in 1980, Rockpile was finally able to release an album. However, the resulting disc, Seconds of Pleasure, while a solid effort, didn’t quite live up to the standard set by the earlier “solo” albums. It was the beginning of the end. While the band toured in support of Seconds of Pleasure in late 1980, by 1981, tensions between Lowe and Edmunds led to Rockpile calling it quits. This FM broadcast from November 27, 1980, 33 years ago today, from The Ritz in New York, catches Rockpile at what may have been its last US concert ever. Some sites claim they played shows on December 1 and December 6, but it’s questionable if those happened. Download this one, therefore, to hear Rockpile’s last hurrah!

Van Morrison - 1978-11-26 - Los Angeles, CA (FM) 

1978 - From 1970 to 1974, Van Morrison released 6 albums of new material, plus the live disc, Too Late To Stop Now. It was an immensely prolific period for Van the Man, marked by incredible artistic and commercial successes such as Moondance, Tupelo Honey, and St. Dominic’s Preview. Of course, given the number of albums he released, some of the material, such as Hard Nose to The Highway, met with less than stellar reviews. That level of production also put great stress on Van the Man, who by the end of 1974 was so burned out that he contemplated leaving the music business. He took 3 years off, not releasing another album until 1977’s aptly named “A Period Of Transition”, a collaboration with Doctor John. Van’s real return; however, came in the spring of 1978, when he released Wavelength, which at the time became the fastest selling album of his career. Most critics also praised the disc, with Time magazine, for example, stating that “Wavelength is good enough to stand close by Morrison's best work, a record of sinuous, sensuous magic. The man just can't be beat.” Perhaps energized by his new album, Van took to the road in the fall of 1978, playing a host of shows at small intimate theaters, such this show at the Roxy on November 26, 1978 show, 35 years ago today. This FM broadcast captures that show in its entirety, with Van in complete control of an enraptured audience. Download this one to hear Van announce to the rock world that he was back.

Elton John - 1970-11-26 - Cleveland, OH (SBD) 

1970 - In late August 1970, Elton John made his first visit to the US, headlining at the Troubador Club in Los Angeles. His dynamic live shows captivated critics and word spread quickly across the country about the latest rock import from London. From November 12 to 15, Elton led in for the Kinks for 4 nights at the Fillmore West. Less than a week later, he was the lead-in for Leon Russell for 2 nights at The Fillmore East on November 20 and 21. In between, he played a live set at A&R Studios in New York, which was broadcast live by WNEW-FM. That show further cemented his reputation for delivering incredible live performances. In fact, according to WNEW’s Dave Herman, Elton cut his hand at some point during the performance, and by the end of the show, his piano keyboard was covered with blood. The performance was eventually released as a live album, fittingly titled 11-17-70, but of course in typical record company fashion, only included 6 of the 13 tracks that Elton played. A few days after his Fillmore East run, Elton found himself in the future home of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, on November 26, 1970, 43 years ago today. Eric Clapton - 2006-11-26 - Sapporo, Japan (SBD) 

2006 - In August 2005, Eric Clapton released the album Back Home, his first disc of original material since Reptile in 2001. EC recruited a host of old friends in making the album, including Steve Winwood, Billy Preston, Robert Randolph, Doyle Bramhall II and Nathan East. The album climbed to #13 on the billboard charts and included a cover of George Harrison’s Love Comes to Everyone, which EC recorded as a tribute to his dear, departed friend. As Clapton was occupied in 2005 with the US and UK Cream reunion shows, he did launch the Back Home tour until the following year. Interestingly, despite the tour taking its name form the recent album, few songs from the disc were featured in the live performances. Rather, EC, backed by Bramhall II and Derek Trucks on guitar, focused on material from his days with Derek and The Dominos. This soundboard recording captures Clapton during the Asian leg of that tour, in Sapporo, Japan on November 26, 2006, 7 years ago today. Rolling Stones - 1994-11-25 - Miami, FL (SBD) 

1994 - On August 1, 1994, the Rolling Stones launched their Voodoo Lounge Tour, in support of the album of the same name. The tour would last a year and a month, and visit 6 of the 7 continents! This was the band’s first tour without original bassist Bill Wyman, who was replaced by Darryl Jones. The tour grossed $320 million, becoming the highest grossing tour of any artist at that time. The album, released on July 11, 1994, went to #2 on the Billboard charts and sold over 2 million copies. In addition, it would go on to win the Grammy for best Rock album. Despite that success, Voodoo Lounge became the first Stone’s disc not to produce a top 40 single in the US (although 4 did hit the top 40 in the UK). This soundboard recording captures the Stones on the first leg of the Voodoo Lounge Tour, in Miami on November 25, 1994, 19 years ago today. The 27 song set list includes 4 songs from their new album, but the heart and soul of the performance are the classics from their heyday in the late 60’s and early 70’s Download this one to hear something old and something new from the Stones!

Bruce Springsteen - 1975-11-24 - London, UK (SBD Matrix)

1975 - In 1975, Bruce Springsteen went for struggling New Jersey musician to international superstar. The album Born to Run, released in August, went to #3 on the Billboard charts and received rave reviews from critics, with Rolling Stone giving it 5 stars and Robert Christgau awarding it an A. He played legendary runs at the Bottom Line in New York in August and the Roxy in Los Angeles in October. On October 27, 1975, he appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek. Less than a month later, he made his first foray to Europe, playing shows in London, Stockholm and Amsterdam. The November 18, 1975 show at the Hammersmith in London has been officially released on CD and DVD. This soundboard recording, however, captures Bruce and the E Street Band on November 24, 1975, 38 years ago today, at the Hammersmith at a show that was added due to the tremendous demand for tickets. Download this one to hear Bruce close out his 1st European tour during the year he truly became “the future of rock and roll”.

The Eagles - 1995-11-24 - New Zealand (SBD)

1995 - In 1980, after years of infighting, the Eagles called it quits. Don Henley, when asked if and when the band would reunite, famously replied, “when hell freezes over”. Apparently, that’s exactly what must have happened in April 1994, as Henley, along with Glen Frey, Joe Walsh, Don Felder and Timothy B. Schmit, took the stage for an MTV special. At that show, Frey, with tongue in cheek, announced that “for the record, we never broke up, we just took a 14-year vacation". The ensuing world tour lasted well into 1996, re-establishing The Eagles as one of rock’s leading acts. The tour spawned the aptly titled live album Hell Freezes Over, which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard charts. The disc also included four new studio songs, with Get Over It and Love Will Keep Us Alive, both becoming Top 40 hits. The album proved as successful as the reunion tour, selling 6 million copies in the U.S. This soundboard recording captures The Eagles in the latter stages of the Hell Freezes Over Tour, on November 24, 1995, 18 years ago today, in New Zealand. Elvis Costello - 1986-11-23 - London, UK (FM)

1986 - In 1986, 2 years after announcing his retirement, Elvis Costello decided to return to recording and touring. In February o f that year, he released he released King of America, an acoustic guitar driven album, produced by T-Bone Burnett, that had a country and folk rock flavor. Then in September, he released Blood and Chocolate, a disc which reunited him with producer Nick Lowe, who had been at the helm for Costello’s first 5 albums. This BBC broadcast captures Elvis shortly after the release of Blood and Chocolate at the Royalty Theater in London on November 23, 1986, 27 years ago today. Sheryl Crow - 1996-11-23 - Dublin, Ireland (FM) 

1996 - On September 24, 1996, Sheryl Crow released her self-titled 2nd album. Any concerns that Sheryl might not be able to match the success of her debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club, were quickly dispelled. Her 2nd disc went to #6 on the Billboard charts, and certified as triple platinum, selling over 3 million copies. Crow won 2 Grammys for the album, for Best Rock Album and best Female Rock Vocal Performance. This FM broadcast captures Sheryl just 2 months after the release of her 2nd album, in Dublin on November 23, 1996, 17 years ago today. How We Choose What To Post At So Many Roads

As we’ve progressed through oour 6 Decades of Rock theme here in November, I’ve gotten numerous questions on how we choose what to post here at So Many Roads. I’ve also gotten several requests for certain bands or types of music. Given all that, I thought I’d take a minute to explain how we decide on what to post. I consider 3 things in deciding what bands/concerts to post at So Many Roads:

1. Sound Quality: Basically, no show gets posted unless the sound quality is top notch. Over 90% of what we post at So Many Roads are soundboard or FM broadcasts. When I first started this site 4 years ago, I took the advice of Tunzmaster Dino, from the legendary D&P’s Bootleg Tunzworld, that no one wants to hear a show that sounds like it was recorded in your bathroom with the water running.  Sound quality is king. While we do post some audience recordings, we do our best to make sure they sound great. Occasionally, maybe 1 or 2 % of the time, we’ll post a less than great sounding show for historical or sentimental reasons, but 9 out of 10 times, if not more, we’re bringing you a soundboard or broadcast quality show.


2. The Date: Given that this blog has evolved to feature a this date in history” approach, the show we post each day has to be from that day! So, if its November 22, then we’ll find a concert from November 22 from some year between 1955 and today. When you see posts such as Concerts From Today in history or some other type of announcement, it means I couldn’t find a show from that day that I felt was worth posting.


3. My Taste In Music: In the end, I post shows that feature music I enjoy. You see lots of shows at So Many Roads from the Grateful Dead, The Beatles, CSNY, Eric Clapton the Allman Brothers, etc. because that’s what I listen to every day. I’m not a fan of heavy metal, grunge or progressive rock, so you don’t see any posts from bands that play those styles of music. I like the blues, but in small doses, which is why you only get occasional posts from artists such as Muddy Waters, Robert Cray or Stevie Ray Vaughn. I’m into live music, not studio outtakes, so you’ll see very few of the latter type of posts here at So Many Roads. I know that my musical tastes may differ from others, which is why I link to sites such as JustDave’s Place, where you can often find music I may not post. By the way, the number of times I post a band ousually reflects how much I enjoy their music but not always. You’d see far more Beatles posts, for example, but unfortunately, there are far too few high quality concert recordings available. Same goes for The Band from the Robbie Robertson era, Rockpile and Derek & The Dominos, just to name a few.

1974 - Back in March 2012, we posted The Eagles live on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, with special guest Linda Ronstadt (go here for that show) Today, Miss Linda gets top billing as we post her appearance on Rock Concert from November 20, 1974, 39 years ago today. Ronstadt has just released her 5th studio album that month, entitled Heart Like A Wheel. The disc would become her masterpiece, climbing to number 1 on the Billboard charts while spawning the hit singles When Will I Be Loved and You’re No Good. Download this one to hear Ronstadt debut tunes from the album that would help crown her the ”First Lady of Rock.”

Bruce Hornsby - 1993-11-20 - Cleveland OH (SBD)

1993 - The first time I saw Bruce Hornsby in concert was in California on May 10, 1987 when he led-in for the Grateful Dead at Laguna Seca Raceway. Who knew then that just over 3 years later he'd be the keyboardist for the Dead. By 1993, he was incorporating several Dead tunes into his set, along with wonderful new interpretations of many of his own tunes. My bride and I saw BH on September 5, 1993.  We even have his autograph on the program from that one! I mailed it to him and he signed it as a wedding anniversary gift for my bride!This soundboard recording captures Hornsby just a few weeks later, in Cleveland on November 20, 1993, 2 decades ago this very day.

1973 - This soundboard recording captures Steve Miller on November 20, 1973, 4 decades ago today, on Don Kirshner’s Rock concert. Kirshner, who originally served as the executive producer for ABC’s In Concert series, left that show in 1973 to start his own TV program. Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert debuted on September 27, 1973, featuring the Rolling Stones, their first appearance on American TV in more than four years. Rock Concert was an innovative show for its time, as it featured bands performing live, as compared to rehearsed, often lip-synced performances that were the staple of earlier television shows like Shindig and American Bandstand. Miller’s performance is noteworthy for several reasons. He plays an acoustic versions of The Joker, changes the lyrics to Space Cowboy and plays an early version of Fly Like An Eagle, a song which wouldn’t be released as a single until December 1976! Download this one, but wait until 11:30 pm to listen to it, just like when you first watched the show on TV.

Paul Simon - 2011-11-20 - Bloomington, IN (FM) 

2011 - On April 8, 2011, Paul Simon released his 12th solo studi album, entitled So Beautiful or So What. The disc debuted at #4 on the billboard charts, selling almost 70,000 copies in its first week. The disc also received critical acclaim, with Allmusic giving it 4 ½ star review, while Robert Christgau gave it a grade of A. In addition, Rolling Stone ranked it #3 on its list of the 50 best albums of 2011. Simon went n tour from April to July in support of the album, then after a 2 month break, went back out on the road from October to December. This FM broadcast captures him in Bloomington, Indiana on November 20, 2011, just 2 years ago today. 2004 - On November 9, 2004, Elton John released Peachtree Road, his 28th studio album. The disc took its name from a street in Atlanta where one of Elton’s 4 homes was located. The disc climbed to #17 on the Billboard charts in the US and reached #21 in the UK. As part of the promotional efforts for Peachtree Road, Elton appeared on BBC Radio on November 20, 2004, 9 years ago today. Grateful Dead - 1966-11-19 - San Francisco CA (SBD) 

1966 - In the beginning, they were Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, Then briefly, in 1965, they were the Warlocks. Later that year, however, they picked a new name out of the dictionary, and so was born,The Grateful Dead. The played their first show under their new moniker in San Jose, California on December 4, 1965, at one of Ken Kesey's Acid Tests. This soundboard recording captures them just about a year later, on November 19, 1966, 47 years ago today, in their hometown of San Francisco. The summer of love was still about 8 months away, but this show provides a glimpse of what was to come!
