Steve Winwood was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic as part of the class of 2004. Also inducted that year were Bob Seger, George Harrison, Jackson Browne, Prince, The Dells and ZZ Top. Dave Matthews handled the induction speech, though many felt Eric Clapton should have been accorded the honor due to his work with Winwood in Blind Faith. Traffic played Dear Mr. Fantasy as part of the ceremony, but nothing topped the all-star tribute that night to the late George Harrison, which included a spine chilling solo by Prince on My Guitar Gently Weeps. Van Morrison entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, alongside Cream, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Etta James, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Ruth Brown, The Doors and Sly and the Family Stone. Robbie Robertson of The Band made the induction speech for Van The Man, The ever reclusive and unpredictable Morrison failed to appear to accept his award. Some sources say he was actually in the building but snuck out right before he was to come on stage to accept the honor. The Counting Crows performed Caravan in his absence. For many critics and fans, it was the first time they had ever heard of the Counting Crows as the ceremony took place months before the band released their debut LP, August and Everything After. This soundboard recording captures Van The Man on September 29, 1986, 29 years ago today.

The Police - 1979-09-29 - New York (FM)

As mentioned in our Sting post earlier this month, The Police entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, along with AC/DC, Elvis Costello & the Attractions, The Clash and the Righteous Brothers. Gwen Stefani made the induction speech. The trio put aside any disagreements, playing a blistering version of Roxanne. A few years later, they would reunite for a world tour!

Our post commemorating the Police's induction into the Hall of Fame goes back to band's begiinings. In 1978, at a time when other rock stations in New York were sticking with traditional AOR formats (WPLJ-FM and WNEW-FM), WPIX-FM staked out a groundbreaking format. The station focused on new wave and punk but also included classic rock as well, hence its advertising slogan: "From Elvis to Elvis." WPIX was among the first in the country to play early records by Squeeze, Nick Lowe, The Clash, The Cars, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, Tom Verlaine and The Police, just to name just a few. The station was even featured in lyrics from the Squeeze song, I Think I'm Go Go, in the line “liquor store and rodeos, P I X and rock and roll.” The station also featured exclusive concerts from these emerging new wave and punk artists, such as this FM broadcast of The Police from September 29, 1979, 3 dozen years ago today, from the Hotel Diplomat in New York. Soon afterward, however, the station changed format, ironically becoming yet another AOR rock station, in an effort to improve ratings and make the station more mass market friendly. Santana was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 1998, along with The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Gene Vincent, The Mamas and the Papas and Lloyd Price. John Popper of Blue Traveler handled the induction speech. When Carlos and the band launched into Black Magic Women during the annual ceremony jam fest, they were joined by Peter Green, who had composed the tune for Fleetwood Mac! Green, of course, had been inducted as a member of Fleetwood Mac, though it was the classic 1970s version of the band (think Rumours) that performed. This soundboard recording captures Santana on September 28, 1971, 44 years ago this very day.

Paul Simon - 1991-09-27 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD)

Paul Simon is a 2 time inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, entering in 1990 for his work with Art Garfunkel and then again in 2001 as a solo artist. James Taylor inducted Simon & Garfunkel while Marc Anthony handled that task for Simon’s solo career. Both Simon & Garfunkel also made induction speeches on behalf of other winners, Paul on behalf of Neil Diamond and Stevie Wonder while Art handled that task for Cat Stevens.

The same year he was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame,  Paul Simon released the album Rhythm of The Saints, the follow up to his Grammy Award winning disc, Graceland. Whereas Graceland drew on African music for inspiration, Rhythm of The Saints featured Latin American influences. Rhythm of The Saints would be nominated for 2 Grammys, and rose to #4 on the Billboard charts, just one spot lower than Graceland’s peak position. In 1991, Simon launched a world tour in support of the album, which included a concert on the Great Lawn in Central Park on August 15 of that year for an audience of several hundred thousand. That show was officially released on both CD and VHS tape (though it never been re-released as DVD). About 6 weeks later, on September 27, 1991, 2 dozen years ago this very day. Simon took the tour to the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Allman Brothers Band - 1973-09-26 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

The Allman Brothers entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, alongside Neil Young, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Al Green, Frank Zappa & Martha and the Vandellas. Willie Nelson made the induction speech for the Allmans. Greg later admitted that he was drunk for most of the week leading up and including the induction ceremony. He was embarrassed by that fact and afterward went into rehab to get clean and sober.

Our post celebrating the Allman's induction goes back to 1973, a year in which the band rebounded from the tragic motorcycle deaths of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley to reach new heights of success and popularity. In the summer of 1973, they toured with the Grateful Dead, culminating in the legendary show before 600,000 fans at Watkins Glen. In September, they released the single Ramblin Man, which would become their only top 10 hit, climbing all the way to #2 on the Billboard charts. Ironically, the tune that kept Ramblin’ Man out of the top spot was Half Breed by Cher, who would go on to marry Greg Allman in 1975. Later that month, on September 26, 1973, 42 years ago today, the Allman’s took the stage at Winterland, with a crowd about 1/100 the size of that at Watkins Glen. Playing the legendary San Francisco venue as a favor to long time friend and promoter Bill Graham, the Allmans delivered yet another scorching performance. We continue our tribute to the Hall of Famer’s the Grateful Dead during their 50th anniversary year with 3 shows over the next 5 days all from 1980. These show also help set the stage for next month’s theme, which will feature nothing but concerts from the decade of the 1980s! By the way, all 3 shows are part of the band’s famed run at the Warfield in San Francisco celebrating their 15th anniversary. Each show opened with am acoustic set, followed by 2 electric sets. This soundboard recording captures the Dead on September 26, 1980, 35 years ago today.

October's Theme At So Many Roads

For October, our theme will be The 1980s.  Every show we post will have taken place during the decade which saw:

• Several of the classic bands from the 1960s and 1970s disband or take significant time off, some permanently, such as Led Zeppelin due to the death of John Bonham, and others temporarily, such as The Who, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones.
• The rise of new wave and punk acts to positions of prominence, though some like The Clash, would burn out, others such as Elvis Costello would radically change their sound, and still others, such as U2, would find themselves on top of the rock world.
• Rock again would become associated with social causes, as evidenced by Live Aid, Farm Aid, The Amnesty Concerts, and The Bridge School Benefits. 
• The rise of MTV, a medium which originally served as a vhecile for new acts, but which by decade's end would help artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac and even the Grateful Dead find a vast nationwide audience.

Speaking of the Dead, given we're still celebrating the band's 50th anniversary, our posts in October we will bring you a host of their shows. We'll focus on 1980, but also bring you at least one concert by the band from every other year in the decade with the exception of 1986, when they did not play any October shows as Jerry Garcia was recovering from a diabetic coma.

Sir Elton John entered the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1994, along with Bob Marley, Duane Eddy, John Lennon, The Grateful Dead, The Animals, Rod Stewart and The Band. This ceremony had a host of memorable moments, both good and bad. Rod Stewart couldn’t make it due to an earthquake near his home in Las Vegas. Jerry Garcia also declined to attend, but his band mates in the Grateful Dead brought a life size card board cut out of the guitarist to stand in for him. Eric Burden couldn’t attend due to a concert commitment. Levon Helm didn’t show up due to his disputes with Robbie Roberson. Robertson did attend, and played with his fellow band mates for the first time since the Last Waltz, Eric Clapton, who had inducted The Band, also played with them. Paul McCartney inducted John Lennon, reading an emotional "letter" to his brother in music, which had McCartney's wife, Linda, and nearly everyone else, in tears. After Elton accepted his award, he called his songwriting collaborator Bernie Taupin to the stage and gave it to him, announcing "Without Bernie, there wouldn't have been any Elton John at all.”

CSN were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, the same year as Buffalo Springfield, Joni Mitchell, The (Young) Rascals, The Bee Gees, The Jackson 5 and Parliament-Funkadelic. For Crosby, it was his second induction, his first, having come in 1991 with the Byrds. For Stills, he was a 2 time inductee on the same night, as Buffalo Springfield also entered the hall that year. For Nash, it was his first induction, with his 2nd coming in 2010 in the Hollies. That said, he did take the stage twice that night, as he accepted Joni Mitchell’s nomination, Mitchell was in the process of reconnecting with a daughter she had given up for adoption in 1965.

In inducting CSN, the Rock Hall of fame noted that the band was often speaking for a generation, that their muisc "spoke the language of the counterculture both in personal and political terms" Such was the case in the spring of 1979, when shortly after the partial meltdown of the nuclear power plant at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania, Graham Nash, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt and John Hall banded together to found MUSE, Musicians for Safe Energy. The group advocated against the use of nuclear power, citing concerns over the safety of nuclear plants and the health hazards of exposure to radiation. MUSE recruited other performers, including Steven Stills, David Crosby, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Carly Simon, The Doobie Brothers, Jesse Colin Young, Poco and Tom Petty, just to name a few, for a series of 5 concerts at Madison Square Garden on the nights of September 19th to 23rd. On the afternoon of September 23, 1979, 33 years ago today, prior to that night’s concert, MUSE staged a rally at Battery Park, in downtown Manhattan, which drew over 200,000 people to show their support for a non-nuclear future. The rally and concerts have been immortalized in the album and film entitled, No Nukes. While the album captures CSN at the Garden, it does not include their afternoon set at Battery Park. Paul McCartney - 2005-09-22 – Philadelphia, PA (HQ Aud)

Our 3rd post today features another member of the legendary class of 1999, Sir Paul McCartney. Neil Young handled the induction speech for Macca. Instead of giving an acceptance speech, McCartney tearfully spoke of his late wife, Linda, who had lost her battle with breast cancer just a few months earlier. McCartney told the audience "It's brilliant/sad, of course, because, yeah, I would like my baby to share this with me. She wanted this. But it's beautiful, you know, she's beautiful, it's all beautiful, and we're cool. I love rock & roll. I love Cleveland, 'cause Cleveland gave me Linda's mom, she was from Cleveland. And I love New York, 'cause New York gave me Linda. So I want to say to you all, thank you very, very much, and this one's for you, baby. “ At the end of the night, Sir Paul who was not scheduled to perform, did take the stage. Backed by Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Robbie Robertson and Eric Clapton, Macca had the crowd on their feet as he lead the all star assembly through a version of Let It Be. See the video of that incredible moment here.

In September 2005, Paul McCartney launched the “US” tour, his 2nd North American tour in 3 years. His 2002 Back in The US tour had been a triumphant return to the stage for Sir Paul, who had been absent from the concert scene for almost 10 years at that time. The US Tour not only continued the momentum from 2002, but also showcased his critically acclaimed album, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. On that album, McCartney played every instrument himself, much like on his debut album, McCartney back in 1970. In addition, at the suggestion of George Martin, Paul employed Nigel Goodrich as his producer. Goodrich was able to do something few would have dared – namely, challenge Sir Paul to be at his best. According to McCartney, "Nigel refused to allow me to sing songs that he didn't like, which was very cheeky of him”.  Four tunes from the album – Jenny Wren, English Tea, Follow Me, and Fine Line – all were included in the set list. Of course, that still left plenty of room for a host of earlier solo material, several wonderful anecdotes, and 2 dozen Beatles classics. Bruce Springsteen - 1979-09-22 - No Nukes, MSG, NY (SBD)

As mentioned in our Billy Joel post, Bruce Springsteen was inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 1999. At the time the Hall did his long time back up group, the legendary E Street Band, a disservice by not including them. Springsteen made up for it by inviting the entire band to attend the ceremony, and then bringing them on stage. As he and the band had not played together since 1989, it was a historic moment that became much more. Soon after, a reunion tour was announced. To paraphrase the Blues Brother’s movie “they’re putting the band back together”. By the way, the injustice of omitting the E-Streeters from the hall was corrected in 2014. This soundboard recording captures Bruce & The E-Street band at the legendary No Nukes concerts at Madison Square Garden, on September 22, 1979, 3 dozen years ago this very day.

Neil Young - 1986-09-21 - Mansfield, MA (SBD)

Neil Young is another 2 time inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as a solo artist in 1995 and with Buffalo Springfield in 1997. The 1995 class also included The Allman Brothers Band, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Al Green, Frank Zappa & Martha and the Vandellas. Eddie Vedder handled Neil’s induction speech, with came just a few weeks before Neil & Pearl Jam released the album Mirror Ball together. By the way, when Buffalo Springfield was inducted in 1997, Tom Petty made the induction speech. We’ll discuss more about that class in our CSN post later this month. Smokey Robinson entered the Rock Hall of Fame in 1987, the largest class in the institution’s history. Other inductees that year included Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Big Joe Turner, Bill Haley, Bo Diddley, Carl Perkins, Clyde McPhatter, Eddie Cochran, Jackie Wilson, The Coasters, Marvin Gaye, Ricky Nelson, Roy Orbison and Muddy Waters. When Smokey strode to the podium to make his acceptance speech, the audience spontaneously sang “ooh baby baby”, serenading the legend with his own tune. Every now and then at So Many Roads, we get the urge to play some good old fashioned blues music, and this month's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame theme gives us the perfect opportunity to do so.  The  late great Muddy Waters was inducted into the hall in 1987 as part of the largest class in the institution's history. Stevie Nicks entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of Fleetwood Mac in 1998.  Other artists inducted that year included  The Eagles, Santana, Gene Vincent, The Mamas and the Papas and Lloyd Price.  Sheryl Crow had the honor of inducting the band.  One bit of controversy surrounded the band's induction.  While early members of the band such as Peter Green were included in the band's induction, Bib Welch, was not.  Many think its because at one point he filed suit against the other band members for increased royalty payments.  In any event, this FM broadcast captures Stevie Nicks on September 18, 1994, 21 years ago today.

Billy Joel was inducted into the rock & roll hall of fame in 1999, along with Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Curtis Mayfield, Del Shannon, Dusty Springfield, The Staple Singers and George Martin. Ray Charles presented Bill for induction. The class had some interesting pairings. Joel, who embodied New York, was inducted alongside Bruce Springsteen, who embodies New Jersey. Bono inducted Springsteen, and Bruce would return that favor a few years later. McCartney was inducted along with the Beatles legendary producer George Martin. The jam session at the induction ceremony was legendary, but we’ll discuss that a bit more in the Paul McCartney post later this month.
