Los Lobos - 1987-06-30 - Bremen, Germany (FM) 

In summer of 1987, the movie La Bamba was released, telling the tale of Ritchie Valens rise to stardom and tragic death, along with Buddy Holly, in a plane crash on February 3, 1959. Don McLean. Of course, immortalized that event as “the day the music died” in his classic tune, American Pie. During the movie’s closing credits, Lou Diamond Phillips, who played Valens in the movie, performed La Bamba, along with a then little known band Los Lobos. They would not be unknown for long. On June 30, 1987, their cover of La Bamba was released as a single and went to #1 on the Billboard charts. Then, just a week later, on July 7, Los Lobos released By Light of The Moon, an album of original material, whose theme focused on how and why the American dream eluded so many of the country’s working class. The disc received rave critical reviews, with Rolling Stone, All Music, and Robert Christgau, just to name 3, all singing its praises. Songs such as The Hardest Time; One Time, One Night; River of Fools; Tears Of God and The Mess We’re In, mixed rock, blues, country and tex-mex influences, with rhythms that could get you up dancing and lyrics that reached into your soul. If you don’t own it, you should. This FM broadcast captures Los Lobos right as they hit it big, in Bremen  June 30, 1987, 31 years ago today.

Stevie Ray Vaughan - 1987-06-30 - Philadelphia, PA (FM)

In September 1986, Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble traveled to Denmark for a one-month tour of Europe. On September 28, Vaughan became ill after a performance in Ludwigshafen, Germany, suffering from near-death dehydration. Vaughn, who had been a long time abuser of alcohol and cocaine, decided after the incident to check into The London Clinic, under the care of Dr. Victor Bloom.  Bloom warned SRV that he was a month away from death if he didn't change his ways. After staying in London for more than a week, he returned to the US and entered Peachford Hospital in Atlanta, where he spent four weeks in rehab. Finally sober and clean, SRV and Double Trouble went back on the road. Vaughn was concerned about whether he could play as well sober as he had stoned, but soon found that he still had the magic touch on guitar.  This soundboard recording captures the now sober SRV on June 30, 1987, 31 years ago today, in Philadelphia.  Unfortunately, we would lose this incredible guitaist just 3 years klater, when he died in a helicopter accudent after a concert at Alpine Valley Music Theater on August 27, 1990.

Bob Dylan - 1988-06-30 - Wantaugh, NY (SBD) 

In May 1988, Bob Dylan released Down In The Groove, his 25th studio album. While the disc did not receive good reviews, nor sell particularly well, Dylan launched a summer tour in support of the album. When he took the stage, fans immediately noticed a dramatic shift. Where in recent years, Dylan’s live shows often featured collaborations with high-profile artists such as Mick Taylor, the Grateful Dead, and Tom Petty, the 1988 tour centered around a small, 'garage rock'-type combo, consisting of guitarist G.E. Smith , bassist Kenny Aaronson, and drummer Christopher Parker. Influenced by his time with the Grateful Dead, Dylan’s set list became more adventurous during this tour, with song selection varying dramatically from show to show. He also began to incorporate more traditional cover songs into the set lists. For Dylan, these shows would be the start of what is now known as the Never Ending Tour, which is 28 years strong as of June 2018. This one is a soundboard recording from Jone Beach in Wantaugh, NY from June 30, 1988, 28 years ago today.

Squeeze - 1981-06-29 - New York, NY (FM)

In the 1980s, The Ritz (as Webster Hall was then known) was a major venue for the host punk and new wave bands that has now garnered mainstream attention, such as Squueze,  Their 1980 disc, Argy Bargy, had some critics hailing Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook as the new Lennon & McCartney. While that praise was a bit over the top, there’s no doubt that the duo filled Argy Bargy with a host of soon to be classic new wave tunes, including Pulling Mussels (from the Shell), Another Nail in My Heart and If I Didn't Love You. The follow up disc, East Side Story, released in May 1981 went to #44 on the US Billboard charts, the band’s highest charting album, In addition, the single Tempted, sung by Paul Carrack who had replaced Jools Holland on keyboards, went all the way to #8 on the charts.This FM broadcast captures Squeeze at The Ritz just a month after the release of East Side Story, on June 29, 1981, 37 years ago this very day.

Led Zeppelin - 1980-06-29 - Zurich, Switzerland (SBD) 

Once their 1977 North American tour ended, Led Zeppelin took a 2 year hiatus until August 1979, when they played 2 shows at Knebworth. They then took almost another year off from live performances, until they launched a tour in July 1980. This tour, however, was unlike many of their previous ones. They played just 14 shows, all on the European mainland. Robert Plant was reluctant to tour the United States, and the band wanted to avoid the negative press which had dogged them in their homeland. Led Zep played smaller venues, with a scaled down sound system and a modest stage and lighting setup. They shortened the set list, with some of the band's lengthier songs such as No Quarter and Moby Dick being cut. Those tunes were replaced by some shorter numbers from the bands recent release, In Through The Out Door, including In The Evening, Hot Dog and All of My Love. They opened each show with The Train Kept A-Rollin, which had not been part of their live sets since 1969. The band seemed rejuvenated by these shows, so much so that they were actually considering another US tour, when, tragically, John Bonham passed away. As such, the 1980 tour would, unfortunately for the rock world, be the band's last. This soundboard recording captures Led Zep on June 29, 1980, 38 years ago today, in Zerich. The Ramones- 1980-06-28- Tokyo, Japan (FM)

They were the pioneers of punk rock, the resident house band at the legendary New York club CBGB, with long hair and leather jackets, counting off 1 2,3,4 then launching into 2 minute songs that were a wall of noise, rebelling against the excesses that plagued rock and roll in the mid 1970s. They were the Ramones, and, in the words of Trouser Press magazine,“With just four chords and one manic tempo”, they “blasted open the clogged arteries of mid-'70s rock, reanimating the music.” Interestingly, the punk rock sound of the Ramones had its roots in the pop music of the 1960s. The band cited the music of The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Kinks and Rolling Stones, as well as girl groups such as The Ronettes and The Shangri-Las, as key influences. Perhaps then, it’s not surprising that the band agreed to let Phil Spector, who, of course, had worked with both The Beatles and The Ronettes, produce their 1980’s album, End Of The Century. The disc clearly had more of a pop than a punk sound, which sparked controversy with both the band and its fans. That said, it became the Ramone’s highest charting album reaching #44 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbing to # 14 in the UK. Moreover, the band quickly incorporated tunes from the disc into their live shows, such as this gig from June 28, 1980, 38 years ago today. \Slowhand 1985 - #3:  As promised, here’s the 3rd and last of 3 shows featuring Slowhand in 1985. One of the recurring themes here at So Many Roads has been posts about concerts I missed for one reason or another. I’ve described how my buddies and I decided against buying tickets to see Paul McCartney and Wings in 1976, how I drew the short straw when it came to Led Zep tickets in 1977 and how we left a club in 1981 before U2 ever came on stage. Here’s another similar story. In spring 1985, Eric Clapton launched a tour in support of his latest album, Behind The Sun. The run included a stop at The Garden State Arts Center (today the PNC Bank enter) in Holmdel, NJ on June 28, 1985, 27 years ago today. At the time, I had lost interest in EC, having been disappointed with his work in the late 70s and early 80s. After all, tunes such as Lay Down Sally and Promises were hardly Sunshine of Your Love and Bell Bottom Blues. So, I passed up the opportunity to buy tickets. Just about 2 weeks after this show, Eric appeared at Live Aid, looking better than he had in years. More importantly, his 3 song set - White Room, She’s Waiting from Behind The Sun, and Layla - signaled his return to the top of the rock world. The video for Forever Man, another single from Behind The Sun, received extensive airplay on MTv, exposing a whole new generation to EC’s guitar magic. After seeing Slowhand on the Live Aid broadcast, I knew I had made a mistake not going to the show in Holmdel. I made sure not to repeat that mistake when he toured again in 1987, going to see EC at Madison Square Garden on April 27, one of my favorite all time concerts which I’ve posted on this blog. In any event, download this soundboard recording from June 28, 1985, 33 years ago today, to hear what I missed back in 1985!

Soon after the release of that disc, lead singer Maria McKee broke up the band, opting to puruse a solo career.  She released her self titled debut album in 1989, and I caught her live that year, in Septemeber, leading in for Neil Young.  This FM broadcast captures her around the time of her first album's release, on June 27, 1989,  in Amsterdam. Maria plays 4 tracks from her new disc, but finishes with a Line Justice classic, Shelter!

Steve Miller - 1982-06-26 - Milwaukee WI (HQ Aud)

In 1967, the Steve Miller Band had yet to release an album. The band had built a reputation for live performances, however, as part of the San Francisco music scene. They even backed Chuck Berry at a concert at The Fillmore West, which was released as a live album. As a result, they were invited to play Monterey Pop in June 1967.  This high quality audience recording captures Steve Miller 15 years after the summer of love, on June 26, 1982, 3 dozen years go today,  By then, Miller had left his early psychedelic blues sound behind, having shifted the band's direction to a more pop/rock oriented style, which had produced a string of hits in the 1970s, including The Joker, Take The Money & Run, Fly Like An Eagle, Rock 'N Me and Jet Airliner.

Stevie Nicks - 1983-06-24 - East Rutherford, NJ (SBD)

In 1981, Stevie Nicks of Fleet6wood Mac released her first solo album, Bella Donna, and what  a debut it was. The disc went to #1 on the Billboard charts, spawned 2 top 10 singles, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around (with Tom Petty) att #3 and Leather and Lace at #6, and a 3rd that just missed the top 10, Edge Of Seventeen at #11.  Two years later, she released her second solo disc, The Wild Heart which reached #5 on the charts. The single from the disc, Stand Back, also went to #5.  Stevie launched a US tour in support of the album in June 1983, that ran until November. This soundboard recording captures her on night 4 of that tour, in East Rutherford, on June 24, 1983, 35 years ago today.

For a brief moment in the summer of 1985, Katrina & The Waves were on top of the rock world as the single Walking On Sunshine climbed the charts, cracking the top 10.  The band would turn out to be a one hit wonder, though another of their songs became a staple for another female band! .The tune Going Down To Liverpool, written by Katrina & The Waves, was the 2nd single released by The Bangles from their debut album, All Over The Place. Long time followers of So Many Roads know that we have featured several shows from Clapton’s 1985 tour, and with good reason. For Eric Clapton, 1985 was a year in which he returned to worldwide prominence. Working with Phi Collins, he released the album, Behind The Sun, in March 1985, which was a huge improvement of his previous effort, 1983’s Money and Cigarettes. It was also his first album after spending time in rehab for his addiction to alcohol. Fueled by the single Forever Man, which received extensive play both on radio and on MTV, Behind The Sun climbed into the top 40 on the Billboard charts. The album also yielded the single, She's Waiting, which was included as part of EC’s set at Live Aid in July 1985. That Live Aid appearance, which also included White Room and Layla, showed the world a healthy and rejuvenated Slowhand, who could still play with the best of them. The Prince's Trust All Star Rock Concert  - 1986-06-20 - London UK (SBD)

Founded in 1976 by Charles, the Prince of Wales, The Prince's Trust is a charity in the UK which helps vulnerable young people get their lives on track. It supports 11 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed and those struggling at school and at risk of exclusion. Many of the young people helped by The Trust are in or leaving care, facing issues such as homelessness or mental health problems, or have been in trouble with the law.  To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the charity, and help raise funds for the work it does, rock royalty turned out in force to support British royalty.  Held on June 20, 1986, 32 years ago today, at Wembley Arena,, as captured in this FM broadcast, The Prince's Trust All Star Rock Concert featured such luminaries as Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Rod Stewarr, David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney, plus a host more!.  For McCartney, it was just his 2nd live performance since the last Wings Tour in 1979, the first having been his appearance at Li ve Aid a year before.

What better way to follow our Bangles post from yesterday than with a Go-Gos post today! In June 1981, The Go Go's released the single, We Got The Beat, and the accompanying video became a mainstay om the then fledgling MTV channel. A month later, the band released the album Beauty and The Beat, which steadily climbed the charts until it reached the top spot, where it remained for 6 weeks. The Go Go's had taken the music world by storm, and made history in the process. Beauty and The Beat became the first album entirely written and performed by an all-female band to top the charts.Today the disc is recognized as one of the cornerstones of the new wave movement. This soundboard broadcast captures them during those heady days n Tokyo on June 19, 1982, 3 dozen years ago today!

Grateful Dead - 1987-06-19 - Berkeley, CA (SBD)

For the Grateful Dead, 1987 was a year in which the band rose from ashes. In the summer of 1986, Jerry Garcia fell into a diabetic coma, and for a while, it appeared he might not survive. When he did emerge from the coma, he had to re-learn how to play guitar. As the Dead song says " I need a miracle, every day" and Jerry got more than his share. By December 1986, Garcia was back where he belonged, on stage with the Grateful Dead for a series of 6 shows in Oakland, including the band's traditional New Year's Eve bash.Who knew at the time that 1987  would be one of the band's greatest years. By spring of 1987, the song Touch of Grey, with its refrain of "I will get by, I will survive" echoing Garcia's recovery and rebirth, became the band's first and only top 10 hit. By the way, only the Dead could write a song in 1982, perform it countless times in concert, then wait 5 years to release it as a single! The video for Touch of Grey, which was recorded in May and featured skeleton puppets of the band playing the song, received major airplay on MTV. In July, the band released In The Dark, their first studio album in 7 years, which also climbed into the top 10. The summer featured a tour with Bob Dylan, with the band playing 2 sets of their own music, then backing Dylan on his tunes for the closing set. The fall tour featured my favorite show ever September 18, 1987 show at Madison Square Garden, a performance that was the first one selected fro the 30 Trips Around The Sun retrospective. Most of all, the euphoria and out pouring of love at each show was unlike anything before or since in the band's career.We all knew that Jerry, the band and all of us had been granted a 2nd lease on life. To celebrate Jerry being back from the near dead (pun intended), we'll bring you 3 shows from one of their favorite venue, the Geek Theatre in Berkeley. We'll start with this soundboard recording from June 19, 1987, 31 years ago today, then bring you 2 more show over the next 2 days.

The Bangles - 1987-06-18 - New York, NY (HQ Aud)

As mentioned in an earlier post, the 1980s saw the rise of female rockers  such as Pat Benatar, The Pretenders (fronted by Chrissie Hynde), The Go Gos, 10,000 Maniacs (fronted by Natalie Merchant), and The Bangles, just to name a few. After gaining some recognition in 1984 with their debut album, All Over The Place, The Bangles found themselves on top of the rock world in 1986 after the release of their second disc, Different Light. The album reached number two on the Billboard Charts, and spawned four top 40 singles, including Manic Monday, which went to #2 in April, and Walk Like An Egyptian, which climbed to the top of the charts for 4 weeks in December. The band also received extensive airplay on MTV, furthering their popularity. The ride at the top would only last another 2 years, but it was fun while it lasted. This high quality audience recording captures The Bangles at their peak, on June 18, 1987, 31 years ago today, at Pier 84 in New York.

The Who - 1989-06-16 - Glens Falls, NY (SBD)

In 1982, as their fall tour came to a close, The Who announced that they were retiring. For a while, it looked like they meant it, as both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend each released 3 solo albums between 1982 and 1989. In 1989, however, to celebrate the band's 25th anniversary, as well as the 20th anniversary of the album Tommy, The Who decided to reform and go back on the road. The good news was that each night of the tour was a 3 hour extravaganza, opening with selections from Tommy, followed by a mix of greatest hits lesser know material, and unique covers (such as hey Joe and Born On The Bayou!)  The not so good news was that Townshend, concerned about his tinnitus, decided to play acoustic guitar for most of the show.  That necessitated bringing on a 2nd guitar player, Steve "Boltz" Bolton.  The band had hoped to get Joe Walsh or Dave Gilmour for that role, but the former went out on tour with Ringo Starr while that latter went back on the road with Pink Floyd! They also replaced Kenny Jones on drums with Simon Phillips, while adding an entire brass section and a set of backing vocalists. The normally streamlined 4 or 5 piece band had grown ito 15 members, producing a sound quite unlike any previous Who tour, which in turn drew mixed reviews from the a band's fans. This soundboard recording captures The Who at rehearsals fro their reunion tour, in Glens Falls on June 16, 1989, 29 years ago today.  By the way, the date of this shoiw has some questions around it.  While the artwork and info files clearly state June 16, the bootleg title, "the Night before the Resurrection, implies that the rehearsal took place a day before the tour began. IF that's true, then this tape is from June 20, as the tour began on June 21.

When Pink Floyd decided to play The Wall in its entirety live on stage it was an undertaking unlike any other previous rock concert. The extensive and expensive sets, including building a wall across the stage to separate the band from the audience and convey the sense of alienation at the core of the album, limited how frequently the band could perform the show. As a result, Pink Floyd’s 1980/1981 The Wall tour consisted of only 31 shows in just 4 cities - Los Angeles, New York, Dortmund and London. This high quality audience recording captures the next to last performance of The Wall by Pink Floyd on July 16, 1981, 37 years ago today, at London’s Earl Court. It was also the next to last show by the band with Roger Waters. Download this one to hear Pink Floyd right before the moment when the Wall became a reality for Waters in terms of his relationship with the rest of the band.

10000 Maniacs - 1989-06-14 - Albany, NY (SBD)

In July 1987, 10,000 Maniacs released their 2nd album, In My Tribe, which was more pop oriented than than previous work. The disc proved to be their big breakthrough, staying on the Billboard charts for 77 weeks, peaking at No. 37. The album included tracks such as Like The Weather, What's The Matter Here, Hey Jack Kerouac, and a cover of Cat Steven's Peace Train, all of which received extensive play on FM radio and MTv. The album would be certified double platinum early the following year.  In May 1989, the band released their 3rd album, Blind Man's Zoo, which climbed all the way to #13 on the Billboard charts, though critical reviews were not quite as good as those for In My Tribe. This soundboard recording captures 10,000 Maniacs on tour in support of Blind Man's Zoo in Albnay on June 14, 1989, 29 yeas ago today.

Bob Marley - 1980-06-13 - Dortmund, Germany (SBD)

In 1980, Bob Marley was slowly dying of cancer which had begun in his toe. Diagnosed with the disease in 1977, Marley had refused to amputate the toe due to his religious beliefs. As the cancer spread throughout his body, Marley recorded the album Uprising, a deeply religious disc addressing his Rastafarian faith. The final track in the album is Redemption Song, in which Marley deals with his own mortality. Marley would go on tour in support of the album, playing his final live performance on September 23, 1980 in Pittsburgh. This soundboard recording captures him just a few months prior to that final show, in Germany on June 13, 1980, 38 years ago today. He would pass away the next spring, on May 11, 1981, at the far too young age of 36. Download this one and remember one of the legends of our time.

Bruce Springsteen  1985-06-13 - Rotterdam, Netherlands (HQ Aud)

On June 29, 1984, Bruce Springsteen launched the Born In The USA tour in support of the album of the same name, a 156 show extravaganza that ran until October 5, 1985. The album went to #1 on the Billboard charts and stayed in the top 10 for the duration if the entire tour. Robert Christgau gave the album an A+ grade, ranking it as the best disc of 1984. Rolling Stone gave it a 5 star review, and would eventually rank it as #85 on its list of the 500 best albums of all time. The video for Dancing In The Dark, the first single from the album, received extensive airplay on MTv which helped propel it to the #2 position on the Billboard singles charts. In all, the album would yield seven top 10 singles. The tour, which featured Nils Lofgren on guitar in place of Miami Steve Van Zandt, who had left the E-Street Band to pursue a solo career. The 1985 portion of the tour saw Springsteen visit Asia, Australia and Europe, before returning to the US to play his first American outdoor stadium shows, including the first 6 shows at Giants Stadium in his home state of New Jersey. This high quality audience recording captures  Bruce & the E Street band in the Netherlands poJune 13, 1985, 33 years ago today.

In the late 1970’s, Santana’s music began to move away from the traditional fusion of Latin, jazz, rock and blues toward a more album oriented rock (AOR) sound. That transition began with the album Inner Secrets in 1978, and continued on with Marathon in 1979 and Zeebop in 1981. While those albums produced some outstanding tracks, including, Stormy, Open Invitation, All I Ever Wanted and Winning, Santana’s core fan base questioned the band’s direction. One thing which did not change during this period, however, was the band’s ability to play dynamic live concerts. As this soundboard recording from June 12 1980, 38 years ago today, from the Rockpalast in Germany demonstrates, Carlos could still play guitar with the best of them and the band could electrify any concert venue. Download this one to hear how Santana integrated some of his new AOR sound with the more Latin infused sound from earlier in his career.
