Grateful Dead - 1973-06-30 - Universal City, CA (SBD)

We end the month the way we began it, with one of the leading lights of the Summer Of Love, the one and only Grateful Dead.  This soundboard recording captures the Dead in Universal City on June 30, 1973,  6 years after the Summer Of Love and 49 years ago today. Of course, the Grateful Dead of 1973 was a very different band from the one that played Monterrey Pop in 1967. Drummer Micky Hart had left the band (temporarily - he would return late in 1974) and founding member and keyboardist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan had passed away at age 27 earlier that year.. Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux had joined the group, and the band's sound had taken on a jazzier feel, though psychedelic improvisation remained at its heart and soul - and always would!

Jefferson Starship - 1984-06-30 - Costa Mesa, CA (FM)

In late 1966, the Jefferson Airplane recruited Grace Slick, and the rest, as they say, was history. Over the course of the next 6 months, the Airplane took center stage as one of the leading bands of the new psychedelic rock movement that emerged from San Francisco. Their breakthrough album, Surrealistic Pillow, produced by the Dead's Jerry Garcia, and released in February 1967, spawned two huge hits, Somebody To Love and White Rabbit. The Airplane played at the Human Be-In in January and then at the Monterrey Pop Festival in June, helping inaugurate the Summer of Love, in which thousands of young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco.  The Airplance remained a leading voice of the counter culture  for the rest of the 1960s, but in the mid 1970s morphed into the Jefferson Starship, For a while hey made great music with tunes such as Ride The Tiger and Miracles, but then came We Built This City, and well, the less said about that the better. This FM broacast features Jefferson Starship, with Grace Slick on vocals, 17 years after the Summer of Love, and 38 years ago today, in Costa Mesa on June 30, 1984.

Few years in rock history were as memorable and innovative as 1967.  From i]the ushering in of the psychedelic scene with Sgt. Pepper's, to memorable debut albums such as Surrealistic Pillow, Are You Experienced? and the self titled debuts from The Doors and The Grateful Dead,  to the Monterrey Pop Festival to the Summer Of Love, 1967 took rock and roll from 2 minute radio friendly AM songs to complex, multi-dimensional arrangements that found a home on free form FM radio. In the US, few cities were as important to the new revolution in rock than San Francisco. Bill Graham's Fillmore and Wiinterland arenas became the stomping grounds for bands like the Dead, the Airplane, and Santana, just to name 3, who played jam filled concerts that often saw one song seamlessly fade into the next, fueled by psychedelic light shows and a host of drugs. Incredibly, amidst this sea of change, an icon from the 1950s  became a regular performer at Graham's 2 venues. He played 10 shows at Winterland that year, 1 on the same bill with the Dead, 6 on the same night as Eric Burden and 3 sharing the bill with Steve Miller.  He performed 7 times at Winterland - 2 on the same bill s the Grateful Dead, 3 on the same night as The Doors, and 2 on sharing the bill with Big Brother and the Holding Company. As mentioned in our Stveve Miller potst, his March 19 show at the Fillmore, when he was backed by Steve Miller, was released as a live album in late 1967.  This soindboar recording captures Chuck still rocking 35 years after the summer of love, and 2 decades ago today, in Switzerland on June 29, 2002.

As mentioned in our Bob Dylan post, The Band spent the spring opf 1967 working with Dylan, a set of recordings that would become the legndary Basement Tapes.  The tunes were truly recorded in the basement, at a house in West Saugerties, a town near Woodstock, know as Big Pink, where The Band would also record their debut album appropriately titled, Music From Big Pink (A side note - its pretty incredible that one house was the site of 2 legendary albums). This excellent audience recording captures them 26 years after the Summer Of Love, and 29 years ago today,  in Chicago. They are joined for one somg by John Sebastian, another veteran of 1967.  That year, Sebastian's band, the Loving' Spoonful, had 3 top 40 hits - Darling Be Home Soon at #18, Six O'clock at #15 and She Is Still A Mystery at #27. Sadly, it was the beginning of the end for the Spoonful, as dissension and personnel changes that year led to Sebastian leaving the group in 1968 and the band;s eventual demise in 1969.

As mentioned in our Byrds post earlier this month, David Crosby used his appearance at Monterey Pop to put the final nail in the coffin of his relationship with The Byrds. His politcial rantings and decision to sit in with Buffalo Springfield directly led to Roger McGuinn throwing him out iof the band. As Crosby said when I saw him soloin 2015, "many peole think I got fired from The Byrds for writing the somg Triad beacuse of its controversial nature. That's not true. I got fired becaue Ii was an A-hole.".  In any event, this FM broadcast cpatures Crosby 21 years after the Summer of Love, and 2 dozen years ago this very day, in the Netherlands. on  June 28, 1998,

Rolling Stones - 1978-06-28 - Memphis, TN (FM)

Anther major act conspicuous by its absence from the Summer Of Love, was the Rolling Stones. While the single Ruby Tuesday hit #1 on the US charts in March 1967, the band was mired in personal and legal issues for much of the year. They had to decline an invitation to play at Monterey Pop because neither Mick Jagger nor Kith Richards could obtain a visa due ti their drug arrests. Brian Jones was at Monterey, not to play, but to introduce Jimi Hendrix. The band spent most of the year in and out of court trying to fight a variety of charges of drug use and possession. When they finally stopped dealing with legal issues later in the year, they still weren't completely focused on music. The band's attempt at a psychedelic album, Their Santanic Majesties Request, which was released in December 1967, was blasted by critics for being a poor attempt to mimic The Beatle's Sgt Pepper's album. Even Jagger was unhappy with the disc, saying that "There's a lot of rubbish on Satanic Majesties. Just too much time on our hands, too many drugs, no producer to tell us, "Enough already, thank you very much, now can we just get on with this song?" Anyone let loose in the studio will produce stuff like that. There was simply too much hanging around. It's like believing everything you do is great and not having any editing." The Stones would make up for it in 1968, however, releasing the critically acclaimed album Beggar's Banquet, that featured Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man. In any event, this FM broadcast captures The Stones 11 years after the Summer Of Love, and 44 years ago today, iin Memphis, on June 28, 1978.

Stevie Wonder - 2010-06-27 - Pilton, UK (SBD)

In 1967, 17 year old Stevie Wonder released his 7th studio album (his first had been in 1962 at the age of 12!!), entitled I Was Made To Love Her, which went to #45 on the Billbaord charts.  The title track was released as a single and went all the way to #2 on the pop charts, while reaching the top spot on the R&B charts.  Wonder had 3 other top 100 singles that year - Travelin Man at #32, Hey Love at #90 and I'm Wondering at #12.  And to think, Wonder's best years were still ahead of him! This soundboard recording captures Stevie at fhs Glastionbury Festival on June 27, 2010, 43 years after the Summer Of Love and a dozen years ago this very day,

Warren Haynes - 2013-06-26 - Vienna, VA (ALD)

Today we bring you Warren Haynes from Virginia on June 25, 2013, 9 years ago today with a post that once again demonstrates how the legacy of 1967 lives on here in the 21st century. Haynes, who played guitar for the Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule has a long history of connections to Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. His tune, Patchwork Quilt, is a tribute to Jerry, mentioning how the Allmans were at Jones Beach the night Jerry died. From 1999 to 2001, Haynes played guitar for Phil Lesh and Friends. Then in 2004 and 2009, He also played with The Dead, one of the several post Grateful Dead incarnations of the band. Haynes also performed at the 2005 Come A Time Tribute that marked the 10th anniversary of Garcia's passing.  Warren's Sympnonic Celebration concerts, such as the one in this post, featured his interpertation of Garcia's music, backed by a Symphony Orchestra,   At many of the those shows, Haynes played Garcia’s famed Wolf guitar.  The spirit of 67 lives on!

In 1967, Simon & Garfunkel maintained a low profile, spending most of their time in the studio recording the album Bookends, which would not be released until 1968. They released 2 singles that year, At The Zoo and Fakin' It, which went to #16 and #23, respectively, on the Billboard charts. Both would later be included on Bookends. The one major event in 1967 for the duo was their appearance at the Monterery Pop Festival on June 16, where they closed the first night of the 3 day event. This soundboard recording captures Simon & Garfunkel about a year earlier, on France on June 26, 1966, 56 years ago today.

While by 1967, Phil Lesh was an integral part of the Grateful Dead, he was actually the final founding member of the band. He was talked into joining the band and playing bass while they were still The Warlocks in late 1964, just a few months before changing their name! Lesh had never played bass before, but his classical training enabled him to take on the new challenge. Moreover, since he had no preconceived notions of how to play the bass, enabling him to experiment and revolutionize the the instrument's role. Rather than simply serve as part of the rhythm section, Lesh used the bass to help lead the psychedelic jams that characterized the band's sound. While Phil took an occasional vocal during Dead concerts, he hardly seemed like the type to front a band. Yet, once the Dead officially disbanded in 1995 after Jerry Garcia's death, he did exactly that. In 1998, he began playing under the moniker Phil Lesh and Friends. Over the years, the friends have included a virtual who’s who of rock and roll, including Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastasio, John Molo, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Joan Osborne, Derek Trucks, and Susan Tedeschi, just to name a few. This sounboard recording captures the 2005 version of Phil & Friends in Atlanta on June 25, 2005, 15 years ago today.  By the way, we'll have more on Phil and the Dead's role in 1967 in a post later this month!

Eric Clapton - 1975-06-24 - Springfield, MA (Ex Aud)

In July 1966, Eric Clapton left John Mayall & the Blues Breakers to join with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce to form Cream. The band became renown for their live performances which featured lengthy.psychedelic and blues improvisational jamming that showcased their instrumental skills. In May 1967, right before the Summer Of Love, the band went into the studio in New York to record their 2nd album. That disc, Disraeli Gears, would become yet another of the landmark albums released in 1967. Featuring tunes such as Strange Brew, Tales of Brave Ulysses, SWLABR and Sunshine of Your Love,. Disraeli Gears would eventually reach #4 on the Billboard charts. Accounts differ as to whether or not Cream was invited to play at Monterey Pop. Most sources say Cream was never considered since the US rock fans knew very little about the band. Clapton claims, however, that they were invited but their manager turned it down hoping to make a bigger splash for ther first headling tour of the US.  In any event, this excellent audience reocrding capture Eric 8 years after the Summer Of Love, out solo, in Springfield on June 24, 1975, 47 years ago today.  By the way, Eric is joined by Carlos Santana for the encore, another star with ties to 1967.  Carlos tells the tale of washing dishes at the Tick Tock diner in the Summer pof 1967 when he saw the Grateful Dead pull up in a limo. At that moment , he decided it was time to follow his passion for music and start a band! Two years later, Santana would play an incendiary set at Woodstock and become a legend!

In April 1967, Steve Winwood left the Spence Davis Group and joined up with Dave Mason, Chris Wood and Jim Capaldi to form Traffic. As the Summer of Love dawned in June 1967, the band released its first single, Paper Sun, which went to #5 on the charts in the UK, though it barely cracked the top 100 at #94 in the US. The band set to work its first album, Mr. Fantasy which was released in December 1967. This FM broadcast captures the band a year after the Summer of Love, and 54 years ago today, in London, on June 24, 1968.

The Beatles - 1966-06-24 - Munich, Germany (SBD)

The Beatles ruling the Summer of Love in 1967 was a direct result of two major events in 1966.  The first was the release of the album Revolver in August 1966.  That disc, which many critics feel is finest work ever produced by the Fab Four, started the process of making albums, rather than singles, the focus of the band's efforts.  In addition, the music, lyrics and themes of the album were directly influenced by the band's use of psychedelic drugs, as well as the growing counter culture movement of the times.  Moreover, Revolver demonstrated the Beatles willingness to experiment in the studio with sound. instruments and technology,  techniques they would take to new heights with Sgt. Pepper's. The second decision was to cease touring at the end of 1966.  The band had grown frustrated with the sound quality of their live shows, the fact that the audience was barely listening to the music, and the growing security issues at each venue. In addition, they knew that the new music they were creating, such as the songs on Revolver, could never be reproduced on stage to due all the studio effects they were using.  Moreover, they saw working in the studio as the new path to expand their musicianship, innovate and create. Touring simply took them away from the studio work and interfered with the creative process. Once off the road, they had unlimited studio time, and the result was Sgt Pepper's.  This television soundboard recording captures The Beatles during that final tour, in Germany on June 24, 1966, 56 years ago today.

While by 1967, The Who had already had 2 top 5 albums in the UK, they had yet to have much commercial or critical success in the US. That all changed in 1967, when the band toured North America for the first time. After playing a few US dates in April, they returned for their first full fledged tour of in June, right at the start of the Summer Of Love. That run included an appearance at Monterrey Pop on June 18, the closing night of the festival, along with Janis Joplin, Buffalo Springfield, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix and the Mamas and Papas. Their set stunned the "Love Crowd" at Monterey as at the end of their frenetic performance of "My Generation", guitarist Pete Townshend smashed his guitar, smoke bombs exploded behind the amps, and drummer Keith Moon kicked over his drum kit as the band exited the stage. The Who had arrived in America. By year end, the band had their first US top 10 single, when I Can See For Miles went to #9 on the Billboard charts. This excellent audience recording, from legnedary taper Mike "The Microphone" Millard, captures them 13 years after that explosive performance (pun intended) in Los Angeles, on June 23, 1980, 42 years agho today.

The legacy of 1967 has lasted far beyond the Summer Of Live.  the 1996 and 1997 Furthur Festivals are an a perfect exmple of the spirit of psychedelia, peace and love shining through some 3 decades after Monterey Pop. After Jerry Garcia's passing in 1995, the Grateful Dead disbanded rather than continue playing as a unit without their long time guitarist and spiritual leader. Over time, they reversed that decision, reforming to play in various guises such as The Other Ones, The Dead and most recently, Furthur. Furthur has always been part of the band's vocabulary, dating back to the the 1960's when it was name of the bus used by Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters as part of the Electric Kool Aid Acid tests, The Grateful Dead, of course, were the house band for those events! The Dead's tune The Other One references Furthur in the line "Captain Neal at The Wheel, of the bus to never never land". So, it's not surprising then that the first musical initiative after Jerry’s death by former members of the Dead was dubbed "The Furthur Festival". The Furthur Festival, w was a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, just to name a few. Hornsby in addition to his 2 plus year stint with the Dead, also grew up playing in a Grateful Dead cover band! This soundboard recording captures his set at the Further Festival in Charlotte on June 22, 1996, 26 years ago today.  The set features one more link to 1967 - Hornby is joined for the final tune, the Dead's Jack Straw, by none other than Bob Weir!

According to several sources, the Beach Boys, the ultimate summer band, were actually scheduled to headline and close the concert that epitomized the Summer of Love, the Monterey Pop Festival. Brian Wilson was on the of festival's advisory board, along with Paul McCartney, that had helped conceive the event. The band pulled out of the show however, for a host of reasons. Carl Wilson was in a feud with government officials for his refusal to be drafted into military service during the Vietnam War. In addition, the band feared that their older, surf music wouldn't play to the counter-culture crowd. The band had no new materiel because they had aborted work on Smile, an album Brian had hoped would rival discs such as Rubber Soul and Revolver. Brian suffered a nervous breakdown in the process, as the workload coupled with his dependence of drugs, keft him mentally and emotionally scarred. He could barely take care of himself, let alone play live in front of thousands of fans. Smile would become , however, another element in 1967's legacy. as over the next 5 decades years, the legends surrounding the disc grew until it became possibly the most famous unreleased album in the history of popular music. In any event, ths FM broadcast captures the Beach Boys 13 years later, at the Knebworth Festival, on June 21, 1974, 42 years ago today.

James Taylor - 1994-06-20 - Santa Monica, CA (FM)

The year 1967 did not begin well for James Taylor.  His group, The Flying Machine, broke up and he found himslef abandoned in New York, with no money and a herioin addiction,.  Rescued by his father, Taylor returned to North Carolina where he spent 6 months in treatment and recovery.  Late in the year, he decided to pursue a career as a solo artist and moved to London for a change of scenery.  Oncc there, his friend Danny Kortchmar introduced him to Peter Asher. Asher was the head of  A&R for Apple Records, one of the many subdivisons of Apple Corps, the Beatles new holding company. Asher played a demo tape of Taylor's music for Paul McCartney and George Harrison. The two were so impressed that they made Taylor the first non British act signed to Apple Records. His debut album, which he recorded at the same time as the Beatles were recording the White Album, and includes guest appearance by Paul & George on Carolina In My Mind, was released in Dcemeber 1968, just about a year after he made the decssion to move across the pond,  This FM broadcast captures Taylor 27 years after his move, and 28 years ago today, i nDenver on June 20, 1994.

Another legend, another 1967 album debut. Jimmy Cliff released his first album entitled, Hard Road To Travel in 1967. While the disc received strong critical reviews, it did not sell well and failed to chart. Cliff would eventally take the world by storm in 1972, with the release of the album The Harder They Come, which played a significant role in increasing the popularity of reggae music in the United States and Europe. This FM broadccast captures Cliff 45 years after the Summer Of Love, and a decade ago today, in Denver on June 19, 2012.

Welcome to our 3rd and final dedicated to Monterey Pop. This one provides soundboard recordings from the afternoon and evening sessions from June 18, 1967, 55 years ago this very day. The afternoon featured Ravi Shankar, who of course, taught George Harrison how to play sitar and was a spiritual influence on the Beatles' guitarist.  The early highlights of the evening session was US debut of The Who,  who followed a set by the Buffalo Springfield. For The Who, who had been recommended for the festival by advisory board member Paul McCartney, it was the moment in which they captured the attention of fans and critics in the states. For the Springfield, it was the usual chaos, as Neil Young missed the show due to bickering with Stephen Stills, forcing the band to have David Crosby sit in. Of course, that was only the start of the fireworks that transpired on that night. Though on their home turf, The Grateful Dead had the unenviable position of having to play right after The Who's US debut and right before the man who would become a rock god at Monterey.  Jimi was also at the festival on the recommendation of  McCartney, who had seen Hendrix play in London. On this night, the whole world got to see what McCartney already knew. The image of Hendrix pouring lighter fluid on his guitar and burning it, is one of the most memorable in rock history. And his playing was unlike anything anyone had ever seen or heard. It was quite unfair that The Mamas and The Papas, who had been leading lights in organizing Monterey Pop, had to follow Jimi on stage. No one could have.

Here's our 2nd of 3 posts dedicated to the Monterey Pop festival. This one features soundboard recordings from the afternoon and evening sessions session from Saturday, June 17,  1967, 55 years ago this very day. This afternoon session featured a host of San Francisco bands, such as Steve Miller, Country Joe & The Fish, and Quicksilver Messenger Service. But it was Janis Joplin who stole the show with her breathtaking performance that day. For the evening session, The Byrds and The Jefferson Airplane were the 2 biggest acts on the bill, but it was Otis Redding, singing to the "love crowd" in his first major appearance in front of a predominately white audience, who turned in a perfromance for the ages. Tragically, Otis died just 6 month's later, at the age of 26.
