The 1997 edition of the All Starr's included Peter Frampton, Gary Brooker, Jack Bruce, Simon Kirke, and Mark Rivera. 2000s - #6: On January 25, 2000, Warren Zevon released his 10th studio album, entitled Life'll Kill Ya. The disc barely cracked the Billboard 200 rankings, peaking at #173, while critical success was moderate, with Rolling Stone and Allmusic both giving the album 3.5 star ratings. Several of the album's songs deal with the topic of death. For example, My Shit's F***ed Up is a mournful lament about the aging process and the inevitable decay that accompanies it. The title track and Don't Let Us Get Sick also feature death as a theme. Perhaps Warren had a premonition of what was in store - just 2 years later he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, and he passed away from the disease on September 7, 2003. This soundboard (or excellent audience) recording captures Zevon on tour in support of the album in South Shields, on May 29, 2000, a quarter century ago today.

The album also featured a cover of the Hollie's He Ain't Heavy (He's My Brother), which went to #20 on the charts, and the tune, Soolaimon, which would eventually become a staple of his live perfromances. 1980s - #5: When I was in college, I had a good friend who went to UMass, where thanks to WBCN, he was clued in to the energing punk and new wave scence. One of the band's he introduced all of us to was Boston's own Robin Lane & The Chartbusters. Their debut disc, with songs like When Things Go Wrong, Without You, and It Will Only Hurt A Little While, just to name 3, were the perfect blend of punk and new wave, all powered by Robin's slightly gravelly, definitely powerful, vocals. On August 10, 1980, I got to see Robyn at the Royal Manor North, one of the countless NJ rock clubs that thrived in the early 1980s. If you lived in the area at the time, you'll recognize that name, along with other like Creations, the Cuss From Hoe, the Meadowbrook, the Fast Lane, the Stone Pony, etc (go here for a whole blog dedicated to those clubs). In any event, my buddies and I manged to find a spot on the floor directly in front on where Robin was standing. As the nught wore on, and the beer consumption increased, my friends swore that after each song, Robin was looking directly at me, smiling and trying to flirt. Sure she was! Despite the beer, I was smart enough to know my friends were trying to get me to do or say something embarrassing. In any event, the show was great and its a shame theat Robin and The Chartbusters never found mainstream success. This FM broadcast captures Robin a few months before I saw her live, at My Fathers Place, on May 27, 1980, 45 years ago today.

1990s - #3: For Bruce Hornsby, the year 1996 marked the 10th anniversary of the release of his Grammy Award winning debut album, The Way It Is. Rather than look backward, however, Hornsby continued to find ways to push his musical style forward. The cover of his recently released album, Hot House, featured an imagined jam session between bluegrass legend Bill Monroe and jazz legend Charlie Parker, two genres of music that Hornsby incorporated into the songs on that disc. The album also featured guest appearances by such diverse artists as Bela Fleck, Pat Metheney and the late Jerry Garcia. During this period, Hornsby's concerts took on a more improvisational tone, as he often took requests from the audience, rather than work from a set list. He would challenge himself to find ways to seamlessly string together diverse requests, turning the album versions of songs into more complex arrangements. As he says on his website, "I think of my songs as living beings that evolve and change and grow through the years." In his continuing quest to grow and evolve his music, Hornsby also participated in the Further Festival in the summer of  1996, one of the many Grateful Dead family endeavors launched in the wake of the death of Jerry Garcia. His band played along with Bob Weir & Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and others. This soundboard recording from Loisville from May 14, 1996, 29 years ago today captures Hornsby during that innovative period in his career.
