Just like the preceding night, the set list foreshadows the band;s big breakout in 1987, including 3 tunes from By The Light of The Moon (Is This All There Is, The Hardest Time and The Mess We're In), plus their cover of La Bamba, a tune originally sung by Ritchie Valens.   By the way,  the penultimate song of the night is quite a rare and unique cover - a version of I'm A Girl Watcher.  That tune, which was released in 1965, went to #5 on the charts and was the only hit for a band called the The O'Kaysions!

Grateful Dead 1987 - Back To Back - #1: For the Grateful Dead, 1987 was a year in which the band rose from ashes. In the summer of 1986, Jerry Garcia fell into a diabetic coma, and for a while, it appeared he might not survive. When he did emerge from the coma, he had to re-learn how to play guitar. As the Dead song says " I need a miracle, every day" and Jerry got more than his share. By December 1986, Garcia was back where he belonged, on stage with the Grateful Dead for a series of 6 shows in Oakland, including the band's traditional New Year's Eve bash. Who knew at the time that 1987 would be one of the band's greatest years. By spring of 1987, the song Touch of Grey, with its refrain of "I will get by, I will survive" echoing Garcia's recovery and rebirth, became the band's first and only top 10 hit. By the way, only the Dead could write a song in 1982, perform it countless times in concert, then wait 5 years to release it as a single! The video for Touch of Grey, which was recorded in May and featured skeleton puppets of the band playing the song, received major airplay on MTV. In July, the band released In The Dark, their first studio album in 7 years, which also climbed into the top 10. The summer featured a tour with Bob Dylan, with the band playing 2 sets of their own music, then backing Dylan on his tunes for the closing set. The fall tour featured my favorite show ever - September 18, 1987 at Madison Square Garden, a performance that was the first one selected for the 30 Trips Around The Sun retrospective. Most of all, the euphoria and out pouring of love at each show was unlike anything before or since in the band's career. We all knew that Jerry, the band and all of us had been granted a 2nd lease on life. This soundboard recording captures the band on the penultimate night of that historicc year, in Oakland on December 30, 1987, 31 years ago today.  Download this one and turn it up loud to help you ring in 2018!  Happy New Year everyone!

Allman Brothers 1991 - Back To Back To Back To Back - #1: As we get close to the end of 2018, how about an extra special treat - 4 in a row from The Allman Brothers. As the decade of the 1980s became the 1990s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg's tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Greg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. This soundboard recording captures the band on their home turf in Macon on December 28, 1991, 27 years ago today. Download this one, the come back the next 3 days for the rest of our Back to Back To Back to Back set!

Jerry Garcia 1976 - Back To Back - #1: In June 1976, the Grateful Dead returned to touring after a 19 month break. Between their last show at Winterland on October 20, 1974 and their first show of their Spring 1976 tour, the band only played 4 concerts, all in 1975. During that break, the Jerry Garcia Band did its share to keep Deadheads happy, playing 115 concerts in 1975 and then another 80 in 1976! This soundboard catches them at one of Jerry’s favorite venues, the Keystone in Berkeley, CA on December 22, 1976, 42 years ago today. This show was the middle of 3 at the Keystone (the others being on December 21 and 23), a pre-Christmas celebration by the JGB. (The Dead by the way, would play the Cow Palace on December 31, 1976, their almost annual New Year’s Eve Bash, a show which has been released on CD). Jerry’s set features his last live performance of Ride Mighty High, a song originally recorded by The Mighty Clouds of Joy, an American gospel quartet, and later covered by Gloria Gaynor. In addition, the concert also includes a rare performance of Stir It Up, originally written by Bob Marley. It never ceases to amaze me how many different artists and styles of music Garcia interpreted during his career. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this set.

Jerry Garcia 1979 - Back To Back - #1: In October 2013, the building at 260 S. California Avenue, Palo Alto was torn down, over the course of a week's time, as captured in this video. At various times in the 50 years prior, the site had been a natural food store, a German restaurant,  a night club called Sophies, and finally the Illusions restaurant.  The location is most famous, however, for housing the Keystone Palo Alto, a rock club in the 1970s and 1980s, which was the sister to the Keystone Berkeley. Between 1977 and 1986, Jerry Garcia played the Keystone Palo Alto on 76 occasions (which seems like a huge number until you realize he played the Berkeley club 206 times!).  This soundboard recording captures Jerry at The Keystone Palo Alto on December 20, 1979, 39 years ago today! Frank Sinatra 1994 - Back To Back - #1: On February 25, 1995, a 79 year old Frank Sinatra would play at a private party for 1200 select guests on the closing night of the Frank Sinatra Desert Classic golf tournament. That would be the last time Sinatra sang before a live audience. About 2 months earlier, in December 1994, Sinatra played 2 shows in Fukodome, Japan. They would be his final public concerts. This soundboard recording captures every moment of the first of those 2 nights, on December 19, 1994, 2 dozen years ago today. Maybe he knew the end was near, as the show is packed with Sinatra classics, such as Come Fly with Me, Fly Me To The Moon, The Lady is a Tramp, New York New York, Summer Wind, My Way and even Strangers In The Night, a tune Frank was known to despise! Grateful Dead 1986 - Back To Back To Back - #1: Those of you who have been following this blog know that we’ve spent quite a bit of time on Jerry Garcia’s triumphant return in 1987 after falling into a diabetic coma in mid 1986. In doing that, we’ve cheated just a bit, because while 1987 featured some excellent Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band concerts, Garcia actually returned to the stage in late 1986. In fact, this entry, a soundboard from December 15, 1986, 32 years ago today, captures Garcia’s first post-coma Grateful Dead concert, in Oakland, California. Is it the best Grateful Dead concert ever? Of course not.  But is it one of the most emotional? Absolutely.  Folks forget how close we came to losing Jerry in 1986.   That's why I never criticize the band's performances in the late 1980's and 1990's, or compare them to the earlier years.  It has become very fashionable to put down the band's later years, but I am always thankful we had those shows, because it all came so close to ending in 1986.   The crowd that December night clearly understood that fact, erupting during the opening Touch of Grey, as the I Will Survive refrain now had more meaning than ever.  More heartfelt emotion filled the building during Candyman, when Jerry sang the line “Hand me my old guitar. Pass the whiskey round. Want you to tell everybody you meet, the Candyman's in town”! Deadheads in attendance, and Jerry himself, said there wasn’t a dry eye in the house that night. Download this one and give a listen, but be warned, you may not be able to hold back the tears.  Then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Back to Back to Back entry!  NOTE - you downloaded this prior to 9:30 am Eastern Time, 4 tracks were missing.  The link has ben corrected and if yiu redownload, you'll get all the tracks,
