EC 1974 - Back To Back - #1: The year 1974 marked EC's triumphant return to the top of the rock world. After playing at the Rainbow Concert in January 1973, Clapton worked to kick his heroin addiction and finally was united with long time love Patti Boyd, who had been the inspiration for Layla. He recorded the album 461 Ocean Blvd in the spring of 1974. The disc would go to #1 on the Billboard charts after its release, as would the single from the disc, I Shot The Sheriff. EC went on the road in support of the album in June 1974, his first tour since 1970. Throughout this tour, Clapton would often sound a bit sloshed, as a new demon had replaced his addiction to heroin, namely a growing dependency on alcohol. This soundboard recording captures EC during that comeback tour, at Madison Square Garden in NY on July 13, 1974, 52 years ago today. In fact, Garcia and Saunders played over two-hundred and fifty shows together, The duo even released a live album together, entitled Live At Keystone featuring tracks from their concerts at that venue in Berkeley on July 10 and 11, 1973. Believe it or not, CSNY has made only 2 appearances at Farm Aid, in 1990 and then again at the 15th anniversary show in 2000. We'll have that second performance for you later this month. 

This soundboard recording goes back 9 years prior to the first Farm Aid, capturing the last night of  CSNY’s tumultuous 1974 tour at Wembley Stadium in London on September 14, 1974, 51 years ago today. The band, which has been driven apart in 1970 by tensions between the the four members, reformed in early 1974 to launch a nationwide tour. On opening night in Seattle, the band showed their total lack of planning, mapping out a 44 (yes – 44!) song set that they thought would last just a bit more than 3 hours. Well, at 12:35 am, 3 ½ hours into the show, they still had 9 songs to play. They plunged ahead, finishing the show, but that decision had enormous consequences. For future shows, some songs were trimmed off the set list, while others were reshuffled in the line up, pleasing none of the 4 band members. Tensions would continue to mount throughout the tour, and when it finally ended, so did CSNY for over a ¼ century. While there would be few special appearances, such as Live Aid in 1985, CSNY would not tour again until 2000!

Grateful Dead - 1974-06-08 - Day On The Green, Oakland CA (SBD)

On May 26, 1973, Bill Graham promoted the first Dancing On The Outdoor Green at Kezrar Stadium in San Francisco. featuring Grateful Dead, Waylon Jennings, and the New Riders Of The Purple Sage.  That show became the blue print for a series of festivals called a Day On The Green, that Graham ran from 1973 to 1991, the year he passed. The concerts were held at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum Stadium, which was also home to the Oakland A's baseball team, and featured 3 or 4 bands on the bill. The first Day On The Green in 1974 was held on June 8, 51 years ago today, headlined by the Grateful Dead. Leading in that day were The Beach Boys, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. This soundboard captures the Grateful Dead's 2 sets that day, a perforamnce that featured the famed Wall of Sound, a mammoth speaker system that could unleash a total of 26,400 watts of audio power. Four tractor trailers and 21 crew members were required to haul and set up the 75-ton Wall.

Sussex records liked his demo tape, and assigned the legendary Booker T Jones to produce his debut album. In 1971, Bill Withers released the album Just As I Am, and the rest is history. The single from that album, Ain't No Sunshine, sold over a million copies, and won a Grammy for best R&B song. His 2 follow up singles, both released in 1972, Lean on Me and Use Me, also sold over a million copies. This TV soundboard recording features Withers singing all 3 of his hit tunes, in London, on May 11, 1974, 51 years ago today.

1970s - #2: In November 1973, Billy Joel released Piano Man, his first album on Columbia Records, and 2nd disc overall (1971's Cold Spring Harbor had been released by Family Productions and was mastered at the wrong speed, resulting in a commercial and critical flop). The title track, a fictionalized retelling of Joel's experiences while working as a lounge singer in Los Angeles under the pseudonym Bill Martin, peaked at  #25 on the Billboard Charts. The album climbed to #27 on the US Billboard 200.  This soundboard recording captures Joel on tour in support of his breakthrough disc, in Denver on May 10, 1974, 51 years ago today.

Elvis 1974 - Back To Back - #1:  On January 26, 1974, Elvis kicked off his annual winter residency at Las Vegas Hilton, which would run until February 9.  The King would play 29 shows over that span, with most nights featuring both a dinner and a midnight engagment.  Elvis was in good form for this run, unlike some of his future stints in Vegas, with his on going addictions at least held at bay for the time being, though his weight gain was quite obvious. Variety wrote "A chubby Elvis Presley is in the throes of romping through his various exercises with playful glee, animal spirits and bemused kissing games with ringside cuties this fortnight …  Certainly the extra poundage doesn’t interfere with his familiar type of belting or mooning ballads. 1970s - #5: In late 1973, when Chicago went into the studio to record their 7th album, the band initially intended to record a pure jazz record. During the sessions, however, some members of the band grew leery about the commercial risk of the endeavor. The group compromised, turning the project into a double album that incorporated jazz music along with some traditional rock tunes. The album, Chicago VII, was released on March 11, 1974 and went to the top of the Billboard charts. Three singles from the album, (I've Been) Searchin' So Long, Call On Me and Wishing You Were Here, all cracked the top 15 on the Billboard singles chart. This soundboard recording captures Chicago on tour in support of their double album in Louisville on October 17, 1974, a half century ago today. After spending the early part of 1974 on tour backing Bob Dyaln, The Band once again found themseleves in a supporting role on September 14, 1974, a haldf century ago today.  CSNY headlined that day at Wembley Stadium iin London before a crowd of over 100,000, with opening acts Jesse Colin Young, Joni Mitchell, Tom Scott & The LA Express, and The Band. For CSNY, it would be their last show together for over 25 years.  For The Band, it would be another monumental rock festival, to go along with their appearances at Woodstock and Watkins Glen. This TV soundboard recording captures The Band's entire set, with all the tracks split out, a big upgrade from the version we posted last year.

We discussed the Grateful Dead's performance at Woodstock, and Jerry Garcia's feelings about it, in 2 posts earlier this month. This post jumps ahead to the 1970s to spotlight one of Garcia's many excursions outsde of the Grateful Dead. From December 1970 to June 1975, Jerry Garcia, when not playing with the Grateful Dead, often found himself collaborating with keyboardist Merle Saunders. In fact, Garcia and Saunders played over two-hundred and fifty shows together, The duo even released a live album together, entitled Live At Keystone featuring tracks from their concerts at that venue in Berkeley on July 10 and 11, 1973. This soundboard recording finds the duo about a year later, in San Francisco, on August 24, 1974, a half century ago today.
