1997: In 1979, George Martin, the legendary producer of The Beatles, financed the building of a recording studio on the Island on Montserrat in the Caribbean From 1979 to 1989, about 70 albums were recorded there, including Synchronicity by the Police and Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits.  Unfortunately, in 1989, Category Four hurricane Hugo hit Montserrat, destroying almost 90 percent of all buildings on the island, including Martin's recording studio. Then, in 1995, the main volcano on the island, Soufriere Hills erupted, and once again the island was devasted. Martin then led an effort to stage a benefit concert to help rebuild the island. He assembled an all star cast of perfromers, all who had recorded on the island, including Carl Perkins, Phil Collins, Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Buffett, Sting, Elton John, Eric clapton, and Sir Paul McCartney.  For Perkons, it would be his last live performance prior to his death just a few months later in January 1998.  For McCartney, it was his first live performance in the wake of the death of hios wife Linda.  This TV soundboard recording captures the entire show, from the Royal Albert Hall in London, on September 15, 1997, 29 years ago today. I've only seen Sting solo once, on February 15,1991. The tickets were a Valentine's Day gift for my then girlfriend of just under a year. Two weeks later I asked her to marry me, she said yes and its been the best years of my life! Every good book, even my tale of rock & roll, needs a good love story!

Two years later, on March 9th, 1993, Sting released Ten Summoner’s Tales, his 4th solo album since the breakup of the Police in 1987. The album title is a pun on his real surname (Sumner). The album went to #2 on both the US and British charts, while achieving triple platinum status in less than a year. Ten Summoner’s Tales, would be nominated for 6 Grammys, and win 3, including best Pop Vocal performance for If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, the first single from the album. That tune would reach #17 on the Billboard charts in the US, while another song from the album, Fields of Gold, would climb to #23. Sting launched a world tour in support of the album, which would take him to all 6 inhabited continents. This FM broadcast captures Sting in Germany on August 21, 1993, 33 years ago today, during the early stages of that tour. Download this one to hear Gordon Sumner play tunes from the disc that bears his name, as well as a host of classics from his days with The Police.

2010s - #4: In November 2016, Sting released the album 57th &9th, his first rock album in 13 years since 2003's Sacred Love. The album's title is a reference to the New York intersection Sting crossed every day to get to Avatar Studios in the city's Hell's Kitchen district where much of the album was recorded. The disc includes the track 50,000, written the week of Prince's death, which pay's tribute to the Purple Rain composer as well as several other musicians who died in late 2015 and 2016 - David Bowie, Glenn Frey, & Lemmy.  The disc went to #9 on the US Billboard charts and to #15 in the UK,  This FM broadcast captures Sting in France on November 12, 2016, 9 years ago today, performing tunes from the new disc, alongside classics from his solo career and time with The Police. The concert marked the reopening the famed La Bataclan Theater, which had been the site of a terrorist attack a year earlier that killed 90 people. Sting told the crowd in French: “We’ve got two important things to do tonight… First, to remember and honour those who lost their lives in the attacks a year ago. And then to celebrate the life and the music of this historic venue.” He added: “We shall not forget them,” before holding a moment of silence on stage.

Jerry Garcia's williness and desire to play music with artists who crossed a broad spectrum of styles is evidenced by his connections to Sting, the former front man for a new wave band! In spring 1993, Sting agreed to be the lead in band for the Dead’s summer tour, playing 11 stadium shows. During that run, Jerry Garcia sat in with Sting on 4 occaisons,  lending his guitar work to Walking On The Moon, Tea In The Sahara, Consider Me Gone, and Been Down So Long. During that run, Garcia advised Sting to "Go out there and push your limits, because these people (the Deadheads) are gonna listen to you." During a joint interview with Jerry and Sting for Rolling Stone at the the Four Seasons Ritz Carlton (side note - kind of ironic that a San Francisco hippie an an English punk rocker would one day be at Ritz Carlton) Garcia said of Sting, “Everybody knows he’s a wonderful musician and a truly fine person, too. It’s nice that we get to meet him, hang out with him a little bit and sort of . . . network a little with him. We share interests, and I think there’s stuff that we could do together in the hypothetical future that would be fun for him and for us." Sting who playfully nicknamed Garcia "Father Christmas", explained his decision to work with Jerry and the Grateful Dead as follows: "I want to see this Deadhead phenomenon. I want to see it first hand. I've never supported anyone in my career. It's so off the wall, such a crazy idea. Hell, let's do it."

This soundboard recording captures Sting later in 1993, on August 28, 1993, 32 years ago today, in Norway on tour in support of his 4th solo album, Ten Summoner's Tales.  The disc went to #2 on both the US and British charts, while achieving triple platinum status in less than a year. When Bob Geldorf organized an effort in late 1984 to recruit an all star cast of rock stars to record a charity single to raise money to address the famine in Ethiopia, he had little idea what idea would eventually transpire. Band Aid's recording of Do They Know Its Christmas would eventually evolve into one of the largest charity initiatives in history, the world wide concert held on July 13, 1985, 4 decades ago today, known as Live Aid. Billed as the "global jukebox", the Live Aid festival was held simultaneously in Wembley Stadium in London, with 72,000 in attendance, and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia,, with a crowd of about 100,000 people. On the same day, concerts inspired by the initiative were also held in other countries, such as Australia and Germany . It was one of the largest satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time, as estimated global audience of 1.9 billion, across 150 nations, watched Live Aid. Over 50 different rock artists performed for over 16 hours between the 2 concerts at Wembley and Philadelphia, making it one of the largest and longest single day rock festivals in history. Most importantly, the effort raised over $283 million for famine relief. Go here for even more details on Live Aid!

After years of searching, I finally found a complete FM recording of the entire show, from July 13, 1985, 40 years ago today, which had originally been broadcast on the BBC and ABC radio networks, as well as televised on MTV and ABC. We're presenting it today in 3 posts, which encompass over 15 cds worth of music. The posts run in chronological order, from the opening notes at Wembley to the closing song at JFK. Normally, I post the entire set list, but the song list is so long for this show, that it won't fit in the post. So I just listed all the artists and you can find the set lists on the artwork. This post features the early portion of the show, including such artists as Status Quo, Joan Baez, Elvis Costello, The Four Tops, Black Sabbath (with Ozzy!), Sting and Phil Collins, who would be the only artist to play on both sides of the Atlantic at Live Aid. Also featured are musicians from Australia, Japan, Austria, and Yugoslavia. Live Aid may have been the first true multi-national rock festival, with performers from all across the globe, and from countless musical genres, uniting for one common cause. Download this part now, then come back later today for the rest of this historic show.

Twenty years after Live Aid raised millions to "Feed The World", Bob Geldorf launched another massive series of benefit concerts/festivals designed to "Make Poverty History.  Known as Live 8, these concerts, held in 10 countries simultaneously, were timed right before the start of the G8 economic summit in order to gain the attention of world political leaders. Live 8 played a key role in getting the G8 nations to pledge to double aid too impoverished countries from $25 billion to $50 billion by 2010.  This FM broadcast from July 2, 2005, 2 decades years ago today, captures some of the highlights from the London portion of Live 8 festival, including sets from Paul Mccartney, U2, Elton John, Sting, The Who and Pink Floyd, with Roger Waters rejoining David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright for the first time in 24 years.

The 1980s saw a resurgence of benefit concerts/festivals where rock artists used the power of their music and popularity to spur social & political change. While Live Aid may be the best known of those efforts, it was far from the only one. On June 11, 1988, 37 years ago today as captured in this FM broadcast, Wembly Stadium hosted Freedomfest, officially know as the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, a concert celebrating the life and sacrifices of the anti-apartheid revolutionary and freedom fighter. The show was also designed to help pressure the Apartheid government of South Africa to release him from jail. The concert featured dozens of musical acts and entertainers, including Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Joe Cocker, Jackson Brown, and Steve Van Zandt (who appropriately played the song, Sun City, protesting Apartheid), just to name some. The show was broadcast live to 67 countries and an audience of over 600 million people. The political pressure Freedomfest place on South Africa had the intended results - 20 months after the show, Mandella was released from prison, having spent 27 years in jail. By 1994, apartheid ceased in South Africa, and Mandella was elected President of the country, a nation which would become a multicultural democracy under his leadership.

In March 1996, Sting released his 5th solo album, entitled Mercury Falling. The 11 song disc (which was only 10 in the US and Canada as the track, Twenty Five to Midnight was not included for some inexplicable reason) is considered by many fans as a transitional album for Sting, moving his music away from jazz oriented rock to a more adult contemporary sound. Critics also did not regard it as highly as his earlier records, nor as well as they would rate its follow up, Brand New Day. Nevertheless, Sting launched a world tour in support of the album, which would take him to 4 continents in 16 months. This FM broadcast captures Sting at  the BBC Studios in London on February 15, 1996, 28 years ago today, and about a month before the release of Mercury Falling, playing a set of old favorites that concludes with Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot, a track from the upcoming album.

That year, Sting released The Soul Cages, an album dealing with the death of his father. Most of the songs have themes related to sailing or the seas as Sting's father, had always regretted not becoming a sailor. The disc climbed to #2 on the Billboard charts in the US, with the single All This Time reaching #5. Reviews for the disc, however, were far more critical than the record buying public. The Chicago Tribune gave the disc only 2 out of 4 stars, while Entertainment Weekly graded it a C. Robert Christgau was even more critical, declining to give a letter grade and instead simply posting a picture of a bomb in his review! Less than stellar reviews did not stop Sting from launching a world tour on February 1, 1991 in support of the disc. The tour reached his homeland in November of that year, including 2 shows at Wembley Arena. This soundboard recording captures Sting on November 30, 1991, 32 years ago today, on the 2nd night at Wembley.

I've seen Sting on stage twice - once with The Police in January 1983 at Madison Square Garden and  once solo on February 15,1991 at the Beacon Theater. The Sting tickets were a Valentine's Day gift for my then girlfriend of just under a year. A week later I asked her to marry me, she said yes and over 30 years, 2 kids, and 2 dogs later, we're still going strong.

This TV soundboard recording captures a portion of Sting's set at the Glatonbury Festival on June 29, 1997, 26 years ago today.
