When Bob Geldorf organized an effort in late 1984 to recruit an all star cast of rock stars to record a charity single to raise money to address the famine in Ethiopia, he had little idea what idea would eventually transpire. Band Aid's recording of Do They Know Its Christmas would eventually evolve into one of the largest charity initiatives in history, the world wide concert held on July 13, 1985, 4 decades ago today, known as Live Aid. Billed as the "global jukebox", the Live Aid festival was held simultaneously in Wembley Stadium in London, with 72,000 in attendance, and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia,, with a crowd of about 100,000 people. On the same day, concerts inspired by the initiative were also held in other countries, such as Australia and Germany . It was one of the largest satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time, as estimated global audience of 1.9 billion, across 150 nations, watched Live Aid. Over 50 different rock artists performed for over 16 hours between the 2 concerts at Wembley and Philadelphia, making it one of the largest and longest single day rock festivals in history. Most importantly, the effort raised over $283 million for famine relief. Go here for even more details on Live Aid!

After years of searching, I finally found a complete FM recording of the entire show, from July 13, 1985, 40 years ago today, which had originally been broadcast on the BBC and ABC radio networks, as well as televised on MTV and ABC. We're presenting it today in 3 posts, which encompass over 15 cds worth of music. The posts run in chronological order, from the opening notes at Wembley to the closing song at JFK. Normally, I post the entire set list, but the song list is so long for this show, that it won't fit in the post. So I just listed all the artists and you can find the set lists on the artwork. This post features the early portion of the show, including such artists as Status Quo, Joan Baez, Elvis Costello, The Four Tops, Black Sabbath (with Ozzy!), Sting and Phil Collins, who would be the only artist to play on both sides of the Atlantic at Live Aid. Also featured are musicians from Australia, Japan, Austria, and Yugoslavia. Live Aid may have been the first true multi-national rock festival, with performers from all across the globe, and from countless musical genres, uniting for one common cause. Sting 1993 Trifecta - #1: When Sting released his 4th solo album in 1993. It was just 1 less than he had produced during his entire tenure with The Police. That album, Ten Summoner’s Tales, went to #2 on both the US and British charts, while achieving triple platinum status in less than a year. Ten Summoner’s Tales, would be nominated for 6 Grammys, and win 3, including Best Pop Vocal performance for If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, the first single from the album. That tune would reach #17 on the Billboard charts in the US, while another song from the album, Fields of Gold, would climb to #23. Sting launched a world tour in support of the album, which would take him to all 6 inhabited continents. He also took a turn as the lead-in band for the Grateful Dead during their spring/summer tour. This high quality audience recording captures Sting on May 9, 1993, a quarter century ago this very day,  in Los Angeles, playing a complete show with Branford Marsalis sitting in, Please note - this is one long single track - if anyone can split it into the 192015 and May 16 for parts 2 and 3 of this trifecta, where you'll hear Sting lead in for the Dead!

Sting - 1985-07-13 - Live Aid. London, UK (FM)

Today we bring you 2 more posts that demonstrate the breath of artists who have performed live alongside members of the Grateful Dead. In 1993, Sting agreed to be the lead in band for the Dead’s summer tour. During that run, Jerry Garcia sat in with Sting for 3 tunes, Walking On The Moon, Consider Me Gone, and Been Down So Long, on June 26, 1993. You can find that show here. Today’s post goes back 8 years earlier, bringing you an FM Broadcast of Sting’s performance at Live Aid on July 13, 1985, 3 decades ago today. Sting is joined by Phil Collins, as well as Branford Marsalis. Branford, of course, sat in with the Grateful Dead on numerous occasions, including the legendary and officially released show from 03/29/1990, as well as on 12/31/1990, 09/10/1991 (a show I was at), 12/10/1993 and 12/16/1994.

We close our New Year's celebration with our traditional concert from the Grateful Dead.  This soundboard recording from December 31, 1990, 2 dozen years ago today, is special for several reasons.  First, Bruce Hornsby was a full time  member of the band at the time, and his presence always seemed to bring out the best in Jerry.  Second, it was the last night of the very magical year 1990, when the Dead's playing brought back memories of the classic shows from the 1970s.  Third, the one and only Branford Marsalis sat in for the end of set 1, all of set 2 and the encores, helping inspire the band to test its limits.  Finally, as someone pointed out to me, it was sadly the last New Year's Eve show produced by Bill Graham, who died in November 1991 in a helicopter crash. Of course, as with any Dead show, covers abound, 2 from Chuck Berry - Promised land & Johnny Be Goode, Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away to sandwich the 2nd Set, Johnny Cash's Big River and a version of The Band's The Weight during the encore.  By the way, the download file contains 3 different versions of the show - I couldn't decide which sounded best so I gave you all of them! Hope you enjoyed all 6 of all New Year's Eve show! Happy 2015 to you all.

In the fall of 1987, the Grateful Dead played Madison Square Garden for 5 nights, a reflection of the band’s new wave of popularity in the aftermath of Jerry Garcia’s recovery from a diabetic coma, the release of the album In The Dark, and success of the single Touch of Grey, including the unique video for the tune featuring marionettes of the band members, that received extensive airplay on MTV. The band had never before played more than nights at the World’s Greatest Arena. From then on MSG became their home away form home in September, including 9 night runs in 1988 and 1991, and 6 night stands in 1990, 1993 and 1994, (Note – in 1989 the band played 5 nights at the Byrne Arena in NJ as MSG was under construction and in 1992 they cancelled the entire fall tour due to Garcia’s health issues.) Since I was living in NY at the time, I attended almost every one of those shows, as you can see if you check out the My Concerts page on this blog. I’ve already posted the September 18, 1987 show on this blog as it just may be the best Dead show I had the privilege to attend. Today, I’m posting another MSG classic I was fortunate enough to be at, a soundboard recording from September 10, 1991, 21 years ago today. The Dead were playing exceptionally well in 1990 and 1991, bolstered by the addition of Bruce Hornsby on keyboards, who helped inspire and drive Garcia to be at his best. This show also features a special guest, the one and only Branford Marsalis, on saxophone. With Marsalis on board, the night takes on a jazzy feeling, with some stunning improvisational moments, especially during the Help > Slipknot > Franklin’s Tower segue and the Dark Star jams in the second set. Deadbase rates this as the best Grateful Dead show of 1991 and I heartily concur. Download this one and see for yourself!

In the Grateful Dead’s history after Jerry Garcia emerged from his 1986 coma, the most fun period was probably 1987, as every show was a celebration of life regained. I attended 8 Dead shows that year, including my only concert in California on May 10, the day after the Touch of Gray video was filmed; the July 12 concert with Bob Dylan at Giants Stadium; and my favorite all time show, on September 18, at Madison Square Garden. All 3 are posted on this blog along with several other shows from that year. That said, the band probably hit its performing peak in that era about 2 years later, from the summer of 1989 through the fall of 1991. That period includes numerous shows that the Dead have officially released including the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989; the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989; the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990; the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990; and the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990. A year later, in fall of 1991, this amazing 2 ½ year run culminated with 9 shows at Madison Square Garden, 6 at the Boston Garden and 5 in the San Francisco/Oakland area, including a tribute show on November 3 to mourn the death of Bill Graham. The 1991 MSG shows included a concert on September 10 with Branford Marsalis sitting in with the Dead, a show previously posted on this blog. That was not Branford’s first appearance, however, with the band. On March 29, 1990, 22 years ago today, Branford joined the Dead at the middle show of 3 nights at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, NY. Marsalis not only plays on Bird Song in the first set, but also joins the band for the entire second set, which kicks off with Eyes of The World, a song rarely played to open a set. Barnnford’s improvisational skills are on display throughout the night, especially as he and Jerry Garcia explore the far reaches of space during Dark Star. This soundboard recording captures every note of a show Deadbase ranks as the best of 1990. By the way, the show also fits in with both themes for March here at So Many Roads – it’s a Grateful Dead post and it features a special guest appearance!
