Other Ones 1998 - Back To Back - #1: After Jerry Garcia's passing in August 1995, the band officially retired the name the Grateful Dead, announcing "that the long strange trip of the uniquely wonderful beast known as the Grateful Dead is over. Although individually and in various combinations they will undoubtedly continue to make music, whatever the future holds will be something different in name and structure." For the next 2 years, the band members pursued individual endeavor, though, they worked collectively to sponsor The Furthur Festival, a summer tour that featured a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby. Then, in 1998, they decided, in the words of the Blues Brothers, to put the band back together. The 1998 version of the Furthur Festival saw Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh & Mickey Hart reunited to form The Other Ones, which was lifted from the title of the Grateful Dead tune That's It For The Other One. The name was appropriate it reflected that the new band was something different from, yet related to, the Dead. The 1998 version of the Other Ones also included Bruce Hornsby, John Molo, Steve Kimock, Mark Karan and Dave Ellis. In 2002, the Other Ones toured again, and this time, all 4 surviving original members of the Grateful Dead - Weir, Lesh, Hart and Kreutzmann - shared the stage again, though Bruce Hornsby could not join them.  In any event, this soundboard recording captures the 2000 version of the Other Ones during rehearsals, on August 4, 2000, 23 years ago today.

Fittingly, they open with an instrumental version of He's Gone in tribute to Jerry.

The Other Ones - 2000-08-25 - Mountain View CA (SBD)

The Grateful Dead hold the distinction of being the only band to play at 3 of the most famous rock festivals in US history - Woodstock, Monterrey Pop and Watkins Glenn. And while their long strange trip ended in 1995, with the death of Jerry Garcia, the surviving band members continued to carry the spirit of the 1960s into the 21st century. In 1998, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bruce Hornsby and Mickey Hart, supported by other musicians, formed The Other Ones, a very appropriate name taken from a Grateful Dead tune. In 2000, Lesh dropped out but Bill Kreutzman joined, while the 2002 version pf the Other Ones lost Hornsby but regained Lesh. In 2003, Weir, Lesh, Hart and Kreutzmann formed The Dead, and continued to play live together through Spring 2009. Then in fall 2009, Weir and Lesh formed Further, and toured for the next 5 years, before reuniting with Hart, Kreutzman and Hrornsby for the Fare The Well shows to celebrate the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary in June 2015.  This soiunboar recording captures the first of the successor bands to the original Grateful Dead, The Other Ones, on August 25, 2000, 18 years ago this very day.

As mentioned earlier this month, the Grateful Dead never appeared at the Bridge School benefit though Jerry Garcia & Bob Weir played an acoustic set at the 1988 edition of the event. In the period since Jerry Garcia's passing, the former members of the band have played together and apart in numerous configurations such as The Other Ones The Dead, Further, Ratdog, Phil & Friends,  Dead & Ccmpany,  etc., but only the first band on that list ever played at the Bridge School. This high quality audience recording (actually the download includes 3 different tapes - pick the one you like best) captures The Other Ones at their only Bridge School appearance on October 27, 2002, 14 years ago today.

The Other Ones - 1998-07-19 - Englewood, CO (SBD)

As part of our Grateful Dead tribute this month, I thought we should bring you a show featuring the first reunion of the surviving members of the band after the death of Jerry Garcia. The 1998 Furthur Festival marked the debut of The Other Ones, which featured former GD members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bruce Hornsby, along with Mark Karan, Steve Kimock, John Molo and Dave Ellis. Bill Kreutzman would join the Other Ones in 2000. The band name of course was taken from the Dead tune That's It for the Other One, and was reference to the fact that the new band wasn’t quite the same as its predecessor. The Other Ones would eventually morph into The Dead, and later Furthur, but the name Grateful Dead stayed permanently retired out of respect for Garcia. This soundboard recording captures The Other Ones in Colorado on July 19, 1998, 17 years ago today.
