Jerry Garcia Band - 1978-02-18 - San Rafael, CA (SBD Matrix)

JGB 1978 - Back To Back - #1: In the winter of 1978, Jerry Garcia went on tour in support of the album Cats Under The Stars, which he recorded in late 1977 and released in April 1978. Unlike Bob Weir, who made some unique choices in the session musicians that helped him record Heaven Help The Fool, Garcia stayed tried and true, working with long time bass player John Kahn, keyboardist Merl Saunders, and drummer Ron Tutt, as well as Grateful Dead members Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux. Garcia also recruited vocalist Maria Muldaur, know for her 1974 hit Midnight at The Oasis, to provide backing vocals for the disc. Kahn, The Godchaux's and Muldaur were all part of the tour band as well, with Buzz Buchanan on drums being the only member of the live ensemble not to have played on the album. Many folks consider this 1978 tour one of the finest by the Jerry Garcia Band, with both the March 18 and March 22 shows having been officially released. I also saw Garcia live for the first time on this tour, on March 17 at the Capitol Theater. This soundboard matrix recording captures Gracia near the end of the west coast leg on the tour, in San Rafael on February 18, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

Throughout this month as part of our tribute to Jerry Garcia, we'll post shows from numerous artists connected to the legendary guitarist.  Some of those connections wil be no brainers - think Jefferson Airplane or CSN - and others will be quite surprising.  Take Maria Muldaur, for example. She is probably best known for her 1973 debut solo album, which included the top ten hit, Midnight at The Oasis.  She got her musical start, however, in the Even Dozen Jug Band, alongside John Sebastian and David Grisman. Grisman, of course, recorded with both Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. In 1974, she opened several shows for the Grateful Dead, and was part of Jerry Garcia's Great American String Band. Four years later, she would provide backing vocals for the Jerry Garcia Band during its 1978 winter tour.  I saw my first JGB concert during that tour, on March 17, 1978!  This FM broadcast captures Muldaur in 1992, showing yet another facet of her talent, playing with the R&B pianist John "King" Cleary in Australia on August 1, 1992, 33 years ago today.

1974 - Maria Mulduar was part of the folk scene in Greenwhich Village in the early 1960s when Bob Dylan arrived from Minnesota. As a result, many of her recollections from that period were used in the Martin Scorcese documentary No Way Home. She got her musical start in the Even Dozen Jug Band, alongside John Sebastian and David Grisman (who of, course, later recorded with Jerry Garcia). JGB 1978 - Back To Back - #2:  Forty four years ago today, on March 17, 1978, I experienced 2 "firsts" in my concert "career" - I made my initial visit to the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ, and I saw the Jerry Garcia Band for the first time. As I mentioned in our earlier post today, The Capitol was unlike any other concert venue I'd ever visit. Located in a downtrodden section of Passaic, the venue was a X-rated movie theater during the day! John Scher, one of rock's legendary promoters, started producing shows at the 3200-seat Capitol in 1971, soon after the Filmore East closed.  For a complete history of the Capitol, including copies of playbills and a list of every show ever at the venue, go here. Jerry's performance that March 1978 night made my first visit to the Capitol one I'd never forget. The band was in one of those zones, where every thing they attempted went right, including stellar versions of The Harder They Come, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Tore Up and Rhapsody In Red. I spent the last 40 years looking for a tape of this concert to no avail, until Catfish John, a regular visitor to this site, who takes his on-line name from a Jerry tune, came across this recently surfaced soundboard of the show. While its missing the opening tune, The Harder They Come, I was able to add that from an excellent audience recording. To hear it again brought back a host of great memories and reminded me why I spend so much time collecting bootlegs and writing about concerts!. Thanks Catfish for a wonderful gift

JGB 1978 - Back To Back - #1: On March 17, 1978, 44 years ago today, I made my first of many sojourns to the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ to see the Jerry Garcia Band's late show at the Capitol Theater. We'll detail more about that in our 2nd post today. The Capitol was unlike any concert hall in world. Rock and roll venue by night, the Capitol was an x-rated movie theater by day.  The theater was owned and run by legendary concert promoter John Scher. In many ways, Scher was to the East Coast what Bill Graham was to the west, though on a bit smaller scale. He was gruff, egotistical and had to appear at every show he promoted, to announce to the crowd upcoming events, all in a nasally voice and tone that grated on the ears. He could get even the largest acts, such as Springsteen, the Who and The Stones, to play the 3200 seat Capitol. No Grateful Dead or JGB show took place on the East Coast with Scher’s involvement. On Dick’s Pick’s 15, you can hear him introduce the Dead at their historic show in Englishtown on September 3, 1977. Scher even bailed Jerry Garcia out of jail when Garcia and Robert Hunter ran were arrested one night in New Jersey for smoking pot! While waiting to head out to the late show that night, my buddies and I listened to WNEW-FM as they aired the early show!  Hard to beleive bands would play two shows a night back in the 1970s!  In any event, download this FM broadcast recording now and come back at 4 pm for the late show!

Jerry Garcia (Great American String Band) - 1974-04-20 - Hollywood CA (SBD)

The Great American String played just 7 shows between April 20th and June 13th, 1974.  The group was an eclectic acoustic ensemble which featured Jerry Garcia on banjo and guitar, David Grisman, Richard Greene, Taj Mahal, Sandy Rothman, David Nichtern, and Buell Neidlinger. Although the band consisted of three Old and in the Way members (see our April 28 post for more on that Garcia venture), bluegrass was not a strong influence on their sound. Rather, they were more of a blues and swing jazz ensemble. One of the last gigs they played together was opening for the Grateful Dead at UC Santa Barbara.  This soundboard recording captures them in Hollywood on April 20, 1974, 46 years ago today. Maria Muldaur, who would provide backing vocals during the Jerry Garcia Bands 1978 winter tour, sits in and plays her 1973 top ten hit, Midnight at The Oasis!

It's an excellent soundboard recording that captures one of my favorite Jerry Garcia band line-ups in peak form!
