Grateful Dead - 1990-10-30 - London, UK (SBD)

ENGLAND - After a brief 11 show East Coast tour in September 1990 that featured the debuts of Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby, as well as an incendiary 6 night run at Madison Square Garden in New York (the entire 9/16 show and parts of the 9/18, 9/19 and 9/20 shows have been officially released), the Dead headed across the pond in October for their last European tour.  While the playing may not have been quite up the the MSG level, the tour still found the band in good form, especially in its latter stages.  The shows from 10/20, 10/27 and the Wembley run from 10/30 to 11/1 are often cited as being particularly strong.. We'll bring you 2 of the Wembley shows this month, starting with this soundboard recording from October 30, 1990, 29 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for Halloween in  London!

ENGLAND - In its final year, BBC's Electric Proms went out with a a bang.  Opening night on October 28 featured Elton John & Leon Russell, while closing night on October 30 was headlined by Neil Diamond.  And the middle night on October 29, 2010, 9 years ago today, as captured in this FM Broadcast featured a guy who gained just a  little bit of notoriety as the led singer for Led Zeppelin, the one and only Robert Plant.

SWITZERLAND - Here's our 3rd debut post at So Many Roads this month, this one from Crowded House. I was listening to WFUV-FM the other day, when they played the tune Weather With You, which I've always liked but never realized was by Crowded House,  Well, that led me to doing some research, finding a bunch of shows on line, and deciding to add them to the always growing list of bands here at So Many Roads,  This soundboard recording captures Crowded House in Switzerland on October 28, 1991, 28 years ago today.  The band was on tour in support of the album Woodface, which include he aforementioned Wealther With You among its tracks.  Woodface also featured a reunion between Neil Finn and his brother Tim, who had played together in Splitz Enz, through Tim left the band soon after this concert!

Black Crowes - 1998-10-28 - Paris, France (SBD)

FRANCE - For the Black Crowes, 1998 was a year of change.  The band changed record labels, leaving American recording and moving to Columbia.  Guitarist Marc Ford and Bassist Johnny Colt left the band, replaced by Audley Freed and Sven Pipien, respectively.  The new line up went into the studio to record the band's 5th album By Your Side, which would be released in January 1999. When the Crowes toured Europe in late 1998, they inclued several songs from the forthcoming disc in their set list including Kicking My Heart Around, Go Tell The Congregation and Virtue and Vice. This soundboard recording captures the Black Crowes during that tour, in Paris, on October 29, 1998, 21 years ago today.

ENGLAND - Bluefest London, a celebration of  blues and soul, launched in 2013 with a stellar line up including Van Morrison, Bobby Womack, Tedeschi Trucks Band and Mavis Staples. just to name a few. The festival continued for the next 5 years with Van The Man appearing each year except 2017.  This IEM matrix recording captures him at Blues Fest 2018, on October 26, 2018, just 1 year ago today.  Unfortunately, it doses not look like the festival will continue to due operating losses and lack of sponsorship.  you can find more on the history of the festival here.

ENGLAND - In October 2006, BBC Radio 2 launched the Electric Proms festival, which ran for 5 years until cancelled due to financial issues. The festival’s website provided the following description of the event: “Radio 2 Electric Proms showcases unique performances from world class artists. These concerts are not just another date on the tour, but a show especially created for the BBC by the world's most loved musicians to create new moments in music. Performances may include exclusive collaborations, using orchestras or something completely new played out to an intimate audience at the iconic Roundhouse, London.” During its brief history, Electric Proms featured some of the biggest names in rock, including Robert Plant, Ray Davies, Elton John, The Who and Neil Diamond In year 2, Paul McCartney played Electric Proms on October 25, 2007, 7 years ago today. This was the last of only 6 shows that McCartney played that year, all designed to promote his latest album, Memory Almost Full, which had been released in June of that year. This soundboard recording of that show captures Sir Paul in fine form in an intimate setting that truly lets him interact with the audience. Maybe he found inspiration from the anagram that can be made from the album’s title: “for my soul mate LLM" (the initials of Linda Louise McCartney).

GERMANY - In September 2014, U2 released their 13th studio album, titled Songs Of Innocence. The lead single from the album, The Miracle (of Joey Ramone) was featured in an Apple television ad as part of a $100 million promotional campaign. The album was initially only available in digital form on Itunes, causing controversy when it was automatically added to every Itunes user accounts, resulting in unprompted, and sometimes, unwanted downloads to phones, tablets and other electronic devices. U2 launched a brief promotional tour for the Songs Of Innocence.  playing live cuts from the disc at several radio stations in Europe.  This FM broadcast captures them during that promo tour in Germany on October 24, 2014, 5 years ago today.

ENGLAND - When Elvis Costello burst on the scene in the late 1970’s, he quickly took his place as one of the 3 Angry Men of rock, along with Graham Parker and Joe Jackson. His first 2 albums, My Aim Is True and This Year’s Model, may be one of the best 1, 2 punches ever thrown by a new artist. Both albums, which were produced by Nick Lowe of Rockpile fame, cracked the top 40 on the Billboard album charts, and received extensive critical praise. Yet, in the midst of rise as a new wave/punk artist, Costello began to give hints that his future musical directions would be quite different, as evidenced in the FM Broadcast from the John Peel Sessions on October 23, 1978, 41 years ago today. Costello played Stranger In The House, a tune with a country western twang, written with the great George Jones in mind. He also sang I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself was written by Burt Bacharach, who Costello would record with in the late 1990s. The punk rocker had far broader musical ambitions than the gneral punk could have imagined at the time!

The Kinks - 1978-10-22 - Vienna, Austria (SBD+AUD)

AUSTRIA - In May 1978, the Kinks released their sixteenth studio album, entitled Misfits.  The disc  featured a more rock-oriented style than many other Kinks records of the 1970s.  The album reached #40 on the Billboard charts in America, and spawned the hit single, Rock "n" Roll Fantasy, which went to #30 on the charts.  This soundboard and audience recording captures the Kinks on tour in Austria in support of Misfits, on October 22, 1978, 41 years ago today. NOTE: per the info file that came with this show, this is a really unique recording. This is a mixture of Soundboard and Audience. The majority of the songs appear to be soundboard, but then there are sections between the songs and during songs that are clearly audience sourced.

Pink Floyd - 1994-10-20 - London, UK (FM)

ENGLAND - Pink Floyd’s 1994 Division Bell tour, after the album of the same name, turned out to be the band’s last. Of course, no one would have suspected it at the time, as the band played 110 dates between March and October, grossing over $250 million. That made it the highest grossing tour in history up to that point. Clearly, the band was as popular as ever. That said perhaps Pink Floyd subconsciously knew the end was near. The band scheduled an unprecedented 14 nights in their home country to end the tour, all at Earl’s Court in London. This FM broadcast captures Pink Floyd on October 20, 1994, a quarter century ago today, at Earl’s Court, half way through their London run. Download this one to hear Pink Floyd just days before their final concert.

SWEDEN - Long before US rock acts began touring in Europe, American jazz and blues artists regularly made their way across the pond.  For example, Ray Charles played a concert in Paris in October 1961! Muddy Waters played several shows in Europe in 1963 and 1964.  B B King played shows in Germany in 1968 and then recorded a live album in London in 1971. In recognition  of their pioneering efforts, we are going to feature all 3 of those blues legends this month as part of our European Vacation theme. We will start with this FM broadcast that captures BB King in Sweden on October 20, 1986, 33 years ago today.

Van Morrison - 2012-10-20 - Belfast, Ireland (FM)

IRELAND - On October 2, 2012, Van Morrison released his 34th studio album, entitled Born Too Sing: No Plan B. The album went to #10 on the Billboard charts in the US and received strong critical reviews. Both Rolling Stone and All Music, for example, gave the disc 4 out of 5 stars.  When asked about the title of the disc, Morrison said, "There isn’t really any question. Born To Sing/No Plan B - it is what it says it is. There’s no hidden meaning or anything... that’s my profession. Singing is my profession. There is no plan B"  This FM broadcast captures debuting tunes from the new disc shortly after its release, on his home turf in Belfast, on October 20, 2012, & years ago today.

FRANCE - Van Morrison's legendary career began in April 1964 as part of the band, Them. The band scored two UK hits in 1965 with Baby, Please Don't Go at  #10 and Here Comes the Night at #2 #2. The latter song and Mystic Eyes  were both Top 40 hits in the US. Interestingly, when I saw Bruce Hornsby in July 2018, he told a story about playing this show, and how it was the first time he had ever heard, let alone played on, Barren Ground by Robbie Robertson and Comfortably Numb by Roger Waters. He noted that he was so inspired by both songs that he not only added them to his concert set lists, but also wrote the tune Fortunate Son to try to mimic the sound and tone of  Comfortably Numb.  And then he played all 3 of those songs!

Marc Cohn - 1991-10-16 - Hamburg, Germany (FM)

GERMANY - Here's our 2nd debut post this month at So Many Roads, this one from Marc Cohn. In February 1991, Cohn released his self titled debut album, which climbed to #38 on the Billboard charts, propelled by the single Walking in Memphis,  That tune, which describes Cohn's experience visiting Memphis in 1986, went to #13 on the Billboard Singles charts. Cohn won a Grammy in 1992 for Best New Artist, and was nominated in the category Best Male Pop Vocalist for his performance of Walking In Memphis.  The tume was also nominated for Song Of The Year.  This FM broadcast captures Cohn on tour in support of his debut album in Germany on October 16, 1991, 28 years ago today.

Robert Cray - 1988-10-16 - London, UK (FM)

ENGLAND - In 1977, Robert Cray formed his first band, with hopes of building a career to match his musical influences Albert Collins, Freddie King and Muddy Waters. The next year, he appeared in the movie, National Lampoon's Animal House as an uncredited bassist in the house party band Otis Day and the Knights. In 1982, he earned his first record contract and began to develop a reputation as a strong live performer. Then in November 1986, he released the album Strong Persuader, and became an “overnight successes”, which of course, was a misnomer if there ever was one. The album climbed to #13 on the Billboard charts, and earned Cray a Grammy. The single from the disc, Smoking Gun, went to #22 on the charts and brought Cray’s music to a wider audience. He released the follow up to Strong Persuader, An album entitled Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, in August 1988.  While not quite as commercially successful as its predecessor, it still went to #32 on the Ebillboard charts, and stayed on the charts for 60 weeks.  This FM Broadcast captures Cray in London on tour in support of both albums, on October 16, 1988, 32 years ago today.

Grateful Dead - 1981-10-16 - Amsterdam, Netherlands (SBD)

NETHERLANDS - While the Dead's fall 1981 trek across the pond couldn't reach the sustained heights of their legendary Europe 72 tour, it did produce one of the most notable gigs in the band’s history, this show at the Melk Weg in Amsterdam on October 16, 1981, 38 years ago today. The show was the 2nd of two nights at the Melk Weg and was also Bob Weir’s 34th birthday. Both shows at the Melk Weg were impromptu affairs, unscheduled concerts at a small 1500 seat back alley club with the band using borrowed instruments! No wonder they were called the OOPS Concerts. Perhaps the spontaneity of it all inspired the band. First, they play an acoustic set, which they hadn’t done since the October 1980 shows and would rarely do again in the future. Second, the set list features a host of rare tunes, including the first ever “Spoonful,” the first “Gloria” since 1965, the one and only “Hully Gully” and Weir’s first turn on lead vocals on Lovelight. This one is so special that the download includes 4 different versions because I just couldn’t decide which one sounds best. If you download one Dead show this month, make sure its this one!

Eric Clapton - 1998-10-15 - London, UK (SBD)

ENGLAND - For Eric Clapton, 1998 was the worst of times and the best of times. Early in the year, he released the album Pilgrim, his first disc of original material since 1989’s Journeyman. In producing Pilgrim, Clapton’s goal was to make the “saddest album possible”, in large part to mourn the loss of his son Conor, who had died 7 years before in a tragic accident. Two of the tunes dated back to that tragedy, My Father's Eyes and Circus, the latter of which was about the last time he saw his son, when he took him to the circus. The titles of several other songs on the disc reflected the themes of loss and sadness, such as Broken Hearted, Sick & Tired and River of Tears. Clapton went on tour in the US in support of Pilgrim in March 1998. During that tour, he met and fell in love with Melia McEnery. They were married on January 1, 2002, and now have 3 daughters. In the midst of heartbreak, EC found a new lease on life. The Pilgrim tour continued for the rest of the year, returning to England in October, where EC played 3 nights at Earl’s Court. This soundboard recording of the first night, October 15, 1998, 21 years ago today, is unique in several respects. First, Eric plays acoustic guitar on 4 numbers, a rarity in concert for him. Second, he’s supported not only by his regular band, but also by a 20 piece orchestra. Third, Bonnie Raitt joins him during the encores for Before You Accuse Me. Finally, the sound is so good on this bootleg, that the Geetarz website, which normally rates bootlegs on a scale of 1 (worst) to 6 (best), gave this recording a 7! Download this one to hear one of the best Clapton recordings you’ll ever find.

SPAIN - From October 16 to 20, Seveille Spain played host to the Guitar Legends Concert, a 5 night music extravaganza designed to promote interest in Expo 92, which was to be held in Seville in April of the following year. Each night of the run had a different theme, and 27 legendary guitarists made appearances.  Today we have an FM Broadcast of part of night 1 of the Guitar Legends Concert, which was dubbed Blues Ni-gt, from October 15, 1991, 28 years ago today.
