If you look at the page on this blog where I list all the concerts I've attended, you won't see any mention of the Fabulous Holmes Brothers. I easily saw them a half dozen times at blues clubs in New York City in the late 1980s, but for a host of reasons, all explained in my book, I never quite was able to keep track of when and where.  In any event, for those of you unfamiliar with them, the New York Times described the band as playing “Timeless, deeply soulful and uplifting gospel-drenched blues, street corner doo-wop, ballads, R&B, country and funk." This soundboard recording captures the Holmes Brothers in California on August 22, 2001, a quarter century ago this very day.

The Go Go's - 2001-06-22 - Central Park, NY, NY (TV SBD)

Believe it or not, I've been to 3 concerts by the Go Gos - once in November 1981 at the Palladium, the just a few months later in January 1982 at Madison Square Garden as the lead-in band for The Police, and then, some 18 years later in July 2000 at the PNC Bank Arts Center sharing the bill with the B52s! What can I say - its a guilty pleasure!  When you listen to their first two albums - Beauty & The Beat, released in 1981 which went to #2 on the Billboard charts, and Vacation, released in 1982 which went to #8 on the charts, you simply want to get up and dance. As Nick Lowe would say, its pure pop for now people!  

This TV SBD recording captures The Go Gos about a years after I saw them for the last time, in Central Park, on June 22, 2001, a quarter century ago today.

2000s - #5: While the last leg of the Elevation Tour is remembered for U2's remarkable tribute to the victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, the early parts of the tour were a celebration of the band's amazing new album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Following the mixed reception to their 1997 album, Pop, U2 returned to their roots for All That You Can't Leave Behind. At the time of the album's release, U2 said on a number of occasions that they were "reapplying for the job of the best band in the world". The public and critics heartily approved, as the disc sold over 12 million copies and won 7 Grammy Awards. The songs Beautiful Day, Walk On, Elevation, and Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of all reached the top 5 on the Billboard charts in the United Kingdom. Of course, many of the album's songs, especially Walk On, New York, and Peace On Earth, would take on new meaning in the wake of the events of 9-11.This soundboard recording captures the band in Sunrise on March 24, 2001, a quarter century ago today, and just about 6 months before that tragic moment.

Bruce Springsteen - 2001-12-08 - Asbury Park, NJ (SBD)

I've attended 9 Springsteen concerts, in 4 different decades (70s, 80s, 90s, & 2000's) with 2 different backing bands (the E-Streeters and those other guys he played with in the 1990s, whoever they were!). On top of that, I've seen Bruce twice in the same year 3 times - 1978, 1992 and 2003! The other 3 shows I attended were in 1984, 1984, and 1988. If that's not enough, I saw Bruce in a 5th decade, the 2010s, when he, along with Miami Steve, were special guests of Paul McCartney on September 15, 2017 at Madison Square Garden. They played I Saw her Standing There, and when the crowd wouldn't stop screaming when it was over, Macca did the only thing he could do - count them down into a 2nd rendition of the same song. Yep back to back versions of I Saw her Standing There featuring Sir Paul, Bruce and Miami Steve. Then 3 years ago, I saw Springsteen in a 6th decade, on June 16, 2022 as he was once again a guest of Macca's. Bruce played Glory Days, with Macca on backing viocals, then the 2 of them dueted on the Beatles' tune, I Wanna Be Your Man. Bruce also came back during the closing Abbey Road medley to add some guitar work! So, that's 11 dufferent times I've seen Springsteen take the stage.

In Dcember 2001, Bruce Springsteen played 5 concerts in Asbury Park, billed on the marquee as “Bruce Springsteen with the Max Weinberg 7 and Friends – A Holiday Show".  This soundboard recording captures the last of the 5 nights, on December 8, 2001, 2 dozen years ago today. The lucky ones who got tickets for the show were treated to a Springsteen concert unlike any other. Bruce's take on holiday tunes, such Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and Merry Christmas Baby, were paired with long lost favorites, such Thundercrack. E Street band members Max Weinberg, Nils Lofgren and Patti Scialfa each got to step out front on several tunes. Friends Elvis costello, Bruce Hornsby and Garland Jeffreys joined in the fun, Another of Bruce’s friends, Southside Johnny, expressed the feelings of everyone in attendance when he led the band through his classic tune, I Don’t Want To Go Home. This one is a holiday treat!

I've only seen Sting solo once, on February 15, 1991 (I also saw him with the Police in January 1982). The tickets were a Valentine's Day gift for my then girlfriend of just under a year. Two weeks later I asked her to marry me, she said yes and its been the best years of my life! Eveey good book, even my tale of rock & roll, needs a good love story!

This FM broadcast captures Sting a decade after my bride and I saw him, at the Beacon Theatre in New York on December 6, 2001, 2 dozen years ago today.  The show was broadcast on WPLJ-FM, the chief competotor to WNEW in the NY market, to cele brate the sation's 30 annibversary.

2000s - #4: When you spend the first 3 decades of your career alongside one of the greatest guitarists in history (namely, the one and only Jerry Garcia), you have to think carefully about who you choose to be your lead guitarist when you start your own band. So, when Phil Lesh launched Phil & Friends in 1998, he made sure that his rotating ensemble always had a Guitar God at the helm. Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastaiso, Derek Trucks, Steve Kimock,and Stanley Jordan are just a few of the names that have played lead guitar for Phil. Another is Warren Haynes, who can be heard loud and clear on this FM broadcast from Boston from November 23, 2001, 2 dozen years ago today. Warren, who has also lit up the stage for the Allman Brothers and Govt Mule, as well as during his own solo shows, was ranked #23 on Rolling Stone's 2003 list of the top guitarists, though he was inexplicably left off the 2011 version of the list. I won't even try to explain that one. The show also features Jimmy Herring, who despite stints with Widespread Panic, The Dead, the Other Ones, the Allman Brothers, Aquarium Rescue Unit and, of course Phil & Friends, just never seems to get any recognition for his amazing guitar work. The incredible 2001 line up also featured drummer John Molo and keyboard plater Rob Barraco.

Los Lobos 2001 - Back To Back - #1: Incredibly in 1998, less than a dozen years after their commercial breakthrough with the album By The Light Of The Moon and their cover of La Bamba, Los Lobos were dropped by Warner records. The band, by the way, had not been resting on their laurels. In 1995, they released the critically acclaimed children's album, Papa's Dream. That same year, Los Lobos won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for the tune Mariachi Suite. Unfortunately, mixed reviews for the album Colossal Head, released in 1996, led to their dismissal by Warner. In 1999, the band signed with Hollywood Records and released the album, This Time, This soundboard recording captures them on tour in support of that disc, in Austin on October 27, 2001, 2 dozen years ago today. 2000s - #7: As long time readers of So Many Roads know, one of my favorite musicians is Marshall Crenshaw. Crenshaw is so under rated that he makes John Hiatt, whose lack of attention I have frequently mourned, look like Mr Popularity. Crenshaw was born in Detroit, MI but got his big break in New York, when he played John Lennon in the off Broadway production, Beatlemania. While in New York, he recorded Someday, Someway, a song that Robert Gordon covered and took to #76 on the Billboard charts in 1981. Crenshaw released his version the next year, which went to #36 in the charts, his only top 40 single. Crenshaw’s first 2 albums are must owns for every rock fan. Famed critic Robert Christgau summed those 2 discs up in one simple word - PERFECT. This soundboard recording captures Crenshaw in Philadelphia on October 27 2001, 23 years ago today.

2000s - #5: When Eric Clapton went on tour in 2001, he announced that it would be his last world tour. Fortunately for all of us, he changed his mind and continues to play live on a regular basis. At the time though, he recorded many of the shows from this tour in anticipation of releasing a live album to commemorate his farewell from touring. In 2002, he released One More Car, One More Rider, a double live disc that featured tunes from his August 18 and 19, 2001 concerrts in Los Angles. This soundboard recording captures him a few months later, in Brazil, on October 13, 2001, 23 years ago today.

2000s - #3: In the wake of the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001  U2 almost cancelled the fall leg of their world tour in support of their critically acclaimed album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. They decided to go on, however, knowing that cancelling shows would be a sign that the terrorists had won in their gambit to disrupt the lives of free people around the globe. For their return to the states, U2 appropriately selected South Bend, Indiana, home of the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. This soundboard recording captures that first concert in the wake of 9-11, from October 10, 2001, 23 years ago today, a show at which songs such as Beautiful Day, Walk On, Peace on Earth and New York, all took on new meaning. 2001 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2010-03-19 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2001 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony was defined by two bigger than life stars who didn't perform.  Michael Jackson accepted the honor live, but then exited. Queen performed several tunes, but of course, without Freddie Mecury who passed away a decade earlier. Paul Simon became a 2 time inductee, having been honored pereviously for his time with Simon & Garfunkel. Steely Dan, Aerosmith and Solomon Burke all took the stage after their inductions, while Ricky  Martin played a trio of songs in honor of Ritchie Valens.
