Today we bring you highlights of the first Farm Aid, held in Champaign, IL, 4 decades ago today.  We've used AM, FM and TV soundboard sources to bring you as much of the show as possible, so many artists that I couldn't list them all in the labels accompanying the post.  We even have Bob Dylan's appearance alongsideTom Petty.  It was, of course, Dylan's somewhat controversial comments at Live Aid that prompted Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp to embark on this 40 year old venture known as Farm Aid that has raised almost $80 million to supoport the American family farmer.  You can donate here.

1987: When Roy Orbison took the stage in London on November 10, 1987, 37 years ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording, it would be the last time he ever performed n Europe. But life has a way that when one door closes, another opens. That same year, Orbison began working with former ELO frontman Jeff Lynne on a new album. At the same time Lynne was completing production work on George Harrison's Cloud Nine, and all three had lunch one day when Orbison accepted an invitation to sing on a song of Harrison's. They contacted Bob Dylan, who allowed them to use a recording studio in his home. Along the way, Harrison had to stop by Tom Petty's house to pick up his guitar. Petty and his band had just backed Dylan on his last tour, so he tagged along as well. By that evening, the group had written Handle With Care, which led to the idea of recording an entire album. They called themselves the Traveling Wilburys, representing themselves as half-brothers with the same father. The disc, which would be released the following year, sold over 2 million copies and spent 53 weeks on the Billboard charts, peaking at #3.

Roy Orbison was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987.  That class also included such legends as Aretha Franklin, BB King, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Smokey Robinson, Jackie Wilson.  Carl Perkins, Ricky Nelson and Bill Haley,  Orbison dueted with Bruce Springsteen on Pretty Women at the ceremony.

This FM broadcast captures Orbison in Sweden, on March 25, 1965, 59 years ago this very day!  A little over 8 months earlier, Orbison has released the single Pretty Womena, which spent 3 weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts,.

1987 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1987-01-21 - New York, NY (SBD)

The 2nd Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony in 1987 featured a gigantic list of inductees who spanned the gamut from 1950's rock to blues to soul and more. Aretha Franklin became the first women inducted, though sadly the Queen Of Soul did not attend. BB King, Bo Diddley, and Muddy Waters, 3 blues legends, took their rightful place in the hall as did soulful legends Smokey Robinson and Jackie Wilson. Early legends such as Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins, Ricky Nelson and Bill Haley, also were part of the class of 1987. Musical moments included Orbison dueting with Bruce Springsteen on Pretty Woman, Carl Perkins backed by Keith Richards and BB King on Blue Suede Shoes, and Smokey Robinson leading an all star jam on Going To A Go Go.

The mid 1970s was a difficult time for Roy Orbison. He bounced from record label to record label, without producing any singles or albums that found their way on to the Billboard charts. Yet, he remained in the public eye in two ways.  First, numerous rock and country artists covered his tunes.  For example, Sonny James' version of Only the Lonely reached number #1 on the country music charts while Linda Ronstadt's co ver of Blue Bayou went to #3 on the rock charts. Second, he continued to tour regularly, even opening several shows for The Eagles in 1976.  This FM broadcast captures him in London on March 3, 1977, 44 years ago today.

Roy Orbison - Back To Back #2: Here's our 2nd post featuring Roy Orbison during his 1967 Australian tour with The Yardbirds and The Walker Brothers. This one is a soundboard recording from January 27, 1967, 54 years ago today. One note - Roy plays a tunes called Communication Breakdown, which is not the same song as later performed by Led Zeppelin. But perhaps, since Jimmy Page was on this tour with the Yardbirds, it's where he found his inspiration for the Zeppelin classic!

Roy Orbison - Back To Back - #1:  Our next 2 posts feature the legendary Roy Orbison during one of his many tours of Australia in the 1960s. He made his first 2 visits to the continent in 1962, then returned for a 3rd trip in 1963. He again visited in 1965, with The Rolling Stones as his opening act. He returned again in 1967 as part of the Big Show tour with The Yardbirds (with Jimmy Page!) and The Walker Bros. On January 26 and 27, The Big Show tour played Festival Hall in Melbourne, along with additional acts Johnny Young & Kompany, and The Mixtures. AUSTRALIA - Just a few months ago, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, the concert world came to a screeching halt.  Among the tours cancelled was a holgram tour featuring Roy Orbison, that was scheduled for 5 shows across 5 cities,  Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.  That run would have been the first "appearance" by the late great singer in the land down under since his performance on October 3, 1972, 4 dozen years ago today, in Melbourne, backed by a symphony orchestra.  This soundboard recording captures that historic set in its entirety, including all his classic  plus covers of Bridge Over Troubled Water and Sweet Caroline.
