May's Theme At So Many Roads

For May's Theme, I'm bringing back an old favorite, entitled, Same Tour, Different Show.  In other words, for each artist we post in June, we’ll feature 2 or more concerts from the same tour. Some times, those shows we’ll be back to back nights, or even 2 shows from the same day (old guys like me remember the days when bands played early and late shows at places like the Fillmore East, The Palladium and The Capital Theatre). We'll have runs from 20 different artists, with a dozen including 3 or more shows!

Enjoy the tunz!

CSNY - Together & Solo #4: In May of 1993, David Crosby released his third solo album, entitled Thousand Roads.  The disc featured a who's who of rock legends supporting Crosby including:
  • Phil Collins
  • Jeff Pevar
  • Jim Keltner
  • Benmont Tench
  • Jimmy Webb
  • Graham Nash
  • Jackson Browne
  • Marc Cohn
  • Jeff Porcaro
  • Andy Fairweather Low
  • Paul (Wix) Wickens
  • Russell Kunkel
  • Stephen Bishop
Despite the star studded cast, the album did not sell well and received less than stellar reviews, with Robert Cristgau, for example, grading it a grade of C minus. That didn't stop Crosby from hitting the road in support of the disc,  This soundboard recording captures him right before the release of Thousand Roads, on April 30, 1993, 2 dozen tears ago today, at the 230 seat Bitter End night club in New York's Greenwich Village.

The Byrds - 1972-04-28 - Meadville PA (SBD)

Roger McGuinn #3: As the Byrds embarked ion their 1972 spring tour, few could guess that the band would be done less than a year later. While the line up of Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Skip Battin and Gene Parsons continued to shine on stage, their fortunes in the studios were in decline. Neither of their 1971 albums, Byrdmaniax nor Farther Along, had fared well on the charts in either the US or the UK. Critical reviews of both albums were often times scathing. For example, Richard Green of the NME wrote "When the true history of rock comes to be written, The Byrds will get a deserved place of honour on the strength of tunes like Mr. Tambourine Man, Eight Miles High, and So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star. Hopefully the writer will not have listened to Byrdmaniax or he may drastically alter his opinion."  Eventually, the studio failures took their toll on the Byrds. Gene Parsons would be dismissed from the band in July 1972. , Roger McGuinn would cancel all touring after February 1973.  An attempt to reunite the original 5 Byrds stalled when their album of new material was met with poor reviews. In July 1973, Clarence White was tragically killed by a drunk driver. That same month, McGuinn released a solo album, effectively putting an end to The Byrds. This soundboard recording captures The Byrds at the start of their tragic decline, in Meadville on April 28, 1972, 45 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back for a 2nd dose of the Byrds from 1972 to conclude our Roger McGuinn four-play.

Van Morrison - 1992-04-27 - The Paramount, New York, NY (Ex Aud)

Van Morrison in 1992 #4: Here's the 4th and final installment of our four-play featuring Van Morrison in April 1992.  This one is an excellent audience recording from April 27, 1992, a quarter century ago today, featuring one of the finest concerts I've ever attended. As most rock fans know, Van Morrison is often described as gruff, curt, moody, and even down right cantankerous. After all, this is a man who supposedly was in attendance at his left his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, but decided to leave before he was called on stage. So, when my then fiance (we were married two weeks later) and I showed up at the Paramount Theater (formerly the Felt Forum, housed underneath Madison Square Garden), we expected Van to be his usual grumpy self. To our astonishment, we got happy! Van was in an  good mood, even laughing and joking with the crowd. For a brief moment I had to double check my ticket stub to make sure that we were at the right concert. The energy is the building was palpable, and Van delivered gem after gem. The encores of Whenever God Shines His Light and In The Garden had everyone of their feet, and it almost felt like a Gospel Mass in Harlem, rather than a rock concert in Manhattan. Praise The Lord in the name of Van The Man!

WCBS-FM 25th Anniversary Concert #1:  In July 1972, WCBS-FM in New York, abandoned its rock and roll format  having lost the ratings war with WNEW-FM and WPLJ-FM, and became one of the first stations in the US to adopt an "oldies" format.  That change proved to be ratings magic, and WCBS became one of the highest rated stations in New York for the next quarter century. WCBS celebrated 25 years as an oldies station with a concert at Radio City Music Hall on April 26, 1997, 2 decades ago today, featuring Felix Cavaliere's Rascals, Ronnie Spector, Dion and Frankie Valli. The whole show, of course, was broadcast live on WCBS-FM! This post captures The Rascals set and we will bring you the other 3 artists throughout the day as part of our four- play celebrating this concert. By the way, with the exception of a 2 years stint from 2005 to 2007 where the station featured the ill fated JACK-FM concept, the station has stayed true to its oldies format (though the songs now are more 1970s and 1980s than 1950s and 1960s) and continues to be one of the most listened to stations in the New York area,

Elvis Costello & Friends #4: On April 24, 1989, 28 years ago today, what started out as a set by Elvis Costello for the 21st birthday celebration for Village Music in Mill Valley CA, turned into an incredible all star jam! By the time the night was over, Elvis was joined on stage by folks such as Nick Lowe, Sammy Hagar, Charles Brown, Kim Wilson, Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia! It was so spontaneous that Garcia had to borrow Elvis' guitar! You can read the whole story in the notes included with the download of this historic soundboard recording. By the way, some sites (and some of the artwork) have a April 29 date, but regardless of which date is correct, this show is a must have!

The Highwaymen - Together & Solo #4: In addition to being part of the Highwaymen, Johnny Cash was also a member of the Million Dollar Quartet, along with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. Those 4 came together for a recording session  on December 4, 1956 at Sun record Studios in Memphis.  Incredibly, the recording remained lost in the Sun archives until 1981 when17 tracks were discovered and released. Additional tracks have been leased since. Moreover, the nistoric session spawned a entire Broadway musical, which ran for two years and included almost 500 performances. This soundboard recording captures 3/4 of the Million Dollar Quartet on tour together in Europe on April 23, 1981, 3 dozen years ago this very day!

Roger McGuinn #2: As the decade of the 1970s came to a close, the Byrds seemed to be on the verge of a reunion. Roger McGuiin, Gene Clark and Chris Hillman, along with David Crosby, played together on December 8, 1977 and February 9, 1978. While the Byrds never officially re-formed, those shows did lead to McGuinn, Clark and Hillman touring and recording together. In early 1979, they released their self titled debut album, which spawned the top 40 hit, Don’t You Write Her Off Like That. The album was a disappointment to both fans and critics, who were expecting the Byrds but instead of crisp harmonies and McGuinn’s trademark Rickenbacker guitar, got disco rhythms, slick production, strings and horns. McGuinn, Clark and Hillman went on tour in support of the album in the Spring of 1979, and fortunately their live shows featured plenty of material from their days with The Byrds. This soundboard recording captures the trio on April20, 1979, 38 years ago today, in Boston.

Roger McGuinn #1: In early 1973, Roger McGuinn disbanded The Byrds - twice!  In February 1973, in order to facilitate a reunion of the original Byrds lineup, including David Crosby, McGuinn disbanded the Byrds line up he had been touring with.  The original 5 Byrds then recorded and released an album which met little critical or commercial success, ending that endeavor before it even got off the ground. McGuinn wasted no time, however, getting on with his own career. He released his first solo album in June 1973, just a few months after the dual break ups. This soundboard captures McGuinn on his first solo tour, at My Father's Place in Roslyn NY on April 19, 1974, 43 years ago today.

Van Morrison in 1992 #1;  Way back on April 27, 1992, just about 2 weeks before we were married, my wife and I saw Van Morrison at the Paramount Theater (once called the the Felt Forum, now just The Theater) at Madison Square Garden. It was easily ne of the 10 best concerts I've ever attended.  For the last quarter century I've searched for a tape of the show, with no luck until juts a month or so ago.  One of our readers saw my request list and pointed me to where I could download a copy!  I'm forever grateful.  n honor of that, we're bringing you a four-play from that 1992 tour, the final installment of which will be the April 27 show.  We'll start, though, with this high quality audience recording from Van in Berkeley on April 17, 1992, 25 years ago today.

This soundboard recording captures that entire performance, which featured Stills performing 2 songs - Remember The Americans and Pensamiento – from his soon to be released album, Down The Road, as well as songs from his solo career, days with CSNY and time with Buffalo Springfield. Unfortunately, Down The Road proved to be less successful than his first album with Manassas. Fortunately, that led to a reunion later that year with the other ¾ of CSNY!
